• Deactivate dead OCS 2007 R2 Edge Server?

  I'm having a surprising issue where our old OCS 2007 R2 Edge server died of hardware failure (no backup) in the middle of our move to Lync. How can I forcefully remove the Edge server from the organization without being able to deactivate the role from the server itself? I've noticed the correct procedure for uninstalling OCS 2007 R2 is as follows: If you are removing an Edge Server, a Mediation Server, an Archiving Server, or a Monitoring Server, remove the Office Communications Server 2007 R2 components in the following sequence: Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Edge Server Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Mediation Server Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Archiving Server Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Monitoring Server Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Core Components Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Unified Communications Managed API 2.0 Core Redistribution package And to deactivate an Edge server: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd572832(v=office.13).aspx Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• Networked Parallel Port in Linux / KVM / QEMU

  What I want to use is the "-parallel" tcp or udp option from KVM / QEMU, but I don't seem to find any server for this client. I don't serve a printer but a hardware dongle. I checked ser2net, which does provide "/dev/lp0" sharing, but it doesn't seem to work for KVM / QEMU. I suspect KVM / QEMU requires "/dev/parport0". I did rmmod lp, modprobe ppdev, linked ser2net to parport0, but it didn't work out. Perhaps ser2net is not suited for this. I tried socat as well, and I tried netcat. No success. Does anyone know any KVM / QEMU compatible parallel port server? Or did any of netcat, socat or ser2net work for you?

• Hyper-V VMs hanging 10 minutes after startup

  Hyper-V running under a fresh install of 2008 R2 DC 2 VMs both running 2008 R2 STD One VM has SQL 2008 Server w/ SP2 and Office 2007 Enterprise w/ SP2 Othe VMS only Office 2007 w/ SP2. Approximately 10 minutes after reboot the Hyuper-V host the VMs will hang Hang = answers pings, but no RDP connections and Hyper-V console session is non responsive Disabled Hyper-V and had no proble with 2008 R2 DC host. Started the three Hyper-V services and 10 minutes later was hung again. Hardware is HP DL380 G4 2 socket, 48 GB, Internal SAS controller 1.5TB C drive VMs .VHDs are on external SAS controller on a 1.5 TB RAID5 volume. Nothing in event log on either VMs or Hyper-V host. • Poor home office network performance and cannot figure out where the issue is

  This is the most bizarre issue. I have worked with small to mid size networks for quite a long time and can say I'm comfortable connecting hardware. Where you will start to lose me is with managed switches and firewalls. The Issue The breakdown here is at item 5. No matter what I do I cannot have a switch at 5 and have to run everything wireless regardless of router. Issues related to using a switch (point 5 above) SpeedTest is good. Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate at all. Usually cannot ping other devices even on the same switch although, when able, ping times are good. Eventual lose of connectivity and can "sometimes" be restored by unplugging everything for several days, not minutes or hours but we're talking a week if at all. Directly connect to computer gives good internet connection however throughput to other devices connected to firewall is at best horrible. Yet printing doesn't seem to be an issue as long as they are connected via wireless. I have to force the RV220W to 1000Mb on the respective port if using a Gig Switch Issues related to using wireless in place of a switch (point 5 above) Poor throughput to other devices if can communicate. SpeedTest is good. Bottom line Internet speeds are awesome. By the way, Comcast went WAY above and beyond to make sure it was not them. They rewired EVERYTHING which did solve internet drops. Computer to computer connections are garbage Cannot get switch at 5 to work, yet other at 4 has never had an issue. Direct connection, bypass switch, is good for DHCP and internet. DNS must be on server, not firewall. Cisco insists its my switches but as you can see I have used four and two different cables with the same result. My gut feeling is something is happening with routing. But I'm not smart enough to know that answer. I run a lot of VM's at 5-c-3, could that cause it? What's different compared to my previous house is I have introduced Gigabit hardware (firewall/switches/computers). Some of my computers might have IPv6 turned on if I haven't turned it off already. I'm truly at a loss and hope anyone has some crazy idea how to solve this. Bottom line, I need a switch in my office behind the firewall. I've changed everything. The real crux is I will find a working solution and, again, after days it will stop working. So this means I cannot isolate if its a computer since I have to use them. Oh and a solution is not throwing more money at this. I'm well into $1k already. Yah, lame.

• Sony Vaio CPU fan runs at full speed after installing Windows 8.1 preview

  I installed the Windows 8.1 preview on my Sony Vaio E Series 14P (http://www.sony.com.au/product/sve14a27cg) and now my CPU fan is running at full speed all the time. When I first start my computer it runs normally, but a few seconds after reaching the Windows login screen the fan speed will suddenly jump up to max. It's pretty loud, so I'm hoping there's a solution! I've tried updating my bios to the latest version but that didn't help. I've tried programs like SpeedFan, but that wasn't able to detect my CPU fan at all. My CPU usage and temperature is normal and doesn't warrant the max fan speed. • ESX hosts lose connectivity with iSCSI SAN LUNs

  I've been experiencing this issue for a couple of months now where my ESX hosts lose connectivity with my iSCSI SAN vmfs volumes. As a results the ESX hosts enter a nonresponsive mode the associated VMs disconnect and the only remedy is to reboot the host. This issue happens randomly . I have escalated this issue with VMWare but I haven't had any solution to the issue yet. I see no errors on my switches and there are no hardware issues as well. My SAN infrastucture is solid and there are 2 paths for every vmfs volume. Did anybody else experienced a similar issue? Themis

• What's the performance on USB docking stations, and can they be used when laptop is closed?

  I'm looking into a docking station for a Dell Studio laptop. I don't see the traditional docking stations I'm familiar with - the kind (for a Dell Latitude, for example) where you sit the laptop on top of a long row of pins. Instead, I'm seeing a lot of USB docking stations. When I close my laptop, I want it to go into sleep mode. If I then connect a USB docking station to the laptop while it's closed, will it wake up? What's the performance on USB 2.0 docking stations with a new Dell Studio? Can all of the video and internet traffic really go through a USB 2.0 connection while still providing the best video frame rates and internet speeds? When you undock, I assume you'd have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows. Will that successfully 'remove' everything attached to the docking station - external drives, thumb drives, etc?

• Restored Domain Controller does not display any information using dcdiag command

  I am testing restoring a domain controller from system state backup to different hardware in a non production environment as a sanity check for our restoration procedure. When i run the dcdiag command I get "blank info back" and all that is displayed are two lines as follows: Domain Controller Diagnosis Performing initial setup: and then I am returned to the command prompt. Even when I do dcdiag /v i get the same result. I have double checked the DNS settings and Active Directory works properly. All FSMO roles are being held by this restored Domain Controller. I am able to join test pc's to the domain without issue etc Is this a common issue or is there something that I am missing. Thanks.

• Why doesn’t windows explorer show my removable / USB drive even though the command prompt does?

  I'm running WinXP SP2. Around 50% of the time, when I slot in my USB drive. Windows explorer refuses to show the drive. If I click on the Safely remove hardware icon on the tray, I can see a menu item for the drive - say drive G: (the light on the USB drive is also on) If I type in G: into the address bar of explorer, it says 'Cannot find...' If I type in G: into a command prompt window, it works and I can do a dir to see the list of directories on the drive. To fix this, I've to remove-reinsert the pen-drive. But doing it every day is annoying. Also this happens only on this machine.. I use this drive on my home machine and it works flawlessly each time. Can anyone suggest things that I could try ? • Ubuntu mount hard drive confusing

  I'm new to linux and have a home server set up running ubuntu. In the ui its very easy to mount my additional internal harddrives. I just double click on them. Since I have made this server headless, I now need to mount via the command line. How can I replicate the very simple double click gui behavior? So far all the information I've found is very complex. Ubuntu auto generated folders for each hd in under /media and I can see the harddrives under /dev but have no idea which is which as the hardware is identical between them. I also don't know how they are formated. Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

• Virtual PC: Cannot restore machine from hibernate

  I have two virtual machines set up from Virtual PC on Windows 7 Professional: Windows XP Mode and Xubuntu. Last time I used them (last month or so), I had closed them by hibernating. Evidently, I have meanwhile downloaded a Windows Update affecting VPC and now receive the following error in restoring either of them from hibernation: 'Xubuntu' could not be restored because of either host processor type mismatch or lack of hardware-assisted virtualization support in the system. I've been through the virtual machine's settings, and there's nowhere an option to simply reboot it. (Virtualization is not the problem, as I can create a new virtual machine without any problems.) Any ideas?

• What are good values for PSU voltages?

  Hello, I have an odd computer I'm trying to fix that will crash only during the setup of an OS(crashes on every OS I've tried so far) It's not overheating and it is stripped down as much as possible and I've tried multiple harddrives, and memtest86+ can run on it for 3 hours without a crash or fail. So, I was a bit stumped and was looking in the BIOS for possible causes and found a hardware monitor that shows PSU voltages. They are: VCORE: 1.432V 3.3V: 3.136V 5V: 5.273 12V: 12.144V I thought the 3.3V looked a little low, but I'm not really sure on how "bad" that is. So, what are the good ranges for the voltages on each CPU rail?

• How to emulate wireless in Virtualbox?

  I have WinXP install in virtualbox which host in Linux. I have a TP-Link (TP-WN321G) USB wifi adapter and have the driver installed inside WinXP. When I plug-in the wifi adapter, there is an option show "Ralink 802.11g WLAN [0101]" in the virtualbox's USB icon, tick on that option, the Device Manager able to detect the hardware which shows TP-Link, but when look into the properties, it says there is no driver was install. I did try to install Ralink driver but still no luck. Just curious why my wifi adapter is TP-Link, but the option show Ralink? May I know how can I emulate the wireless network inside WindowsXP?

• Gateway SX2300-01u CPU/PSU issues

  I have a 2-yr-old Gateway SX2300-01u with an AMD Phenom X3 8550 that I feel has about a year or so of life left, but I am having a couple of hardware issues that I have not been able to resolve. First, the power supply fan sounds like much louder than before and the PSU itself is really hot. The PSU model (Liteon PS 5221-06) is not available at a reasonable price; are there any good alternatives? Could I replace just the PSU fan? Also, the CPU fan failed sometime back, but my replacement, which supposedly fits the MB (Socket AM2+) doesn't actually fit properly. Any idea why?

• Apache port forwarding with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router (provider specific firmware)

  I'm trying to configure port forwarding for Apache 2.2 installed on Windows XP SP3 with ZTE ZXV10 W300 router. The computer has a static IP 192.168.1.2. Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system.   I want to run my own root server (directly accessible from the web without a hardware firewall) with debian lenny, apache2, php5, mysql, postfix MTA, sftp (based on ssh) and maybe dns server. What measures/software would you recomend, and why, to secure this server down and minimalize the attack vector? Webapplications aside ... This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort? What am I missing? What is hot and what is not? Best practices? I like "KISS" - Keep it simple secure, I know it would be nice! Thanks in advance ...

• QoS / PBR Routing Questions

  I have a 50Mbs Satellite link and a 10Mbs Microwave link supplying a very remote location. Behind these links, I have a 6,400 seat network - with about 3,000 signed in at any one time. My goal is to send all of the Voip traffic (Google Chat, Magic Jack, Skype, Speakeasy, Vonage, Vonage PC, Yahoo) through the microwave link which has 100ms latency. The rest of the traffic can utilize any remaining bandwidth of the microwave link with excess being diverted to the higher latency (600ms) satellite connection. The problem I've had so far is that most automatic routing configurations weigh the bandwidth heavily for preference - and I'm only wanting latency considered. Additionally, I don't know if this can even be handled with the routing hardware I have at my disposal (Cisco 3640, 3745, & 3845). Any recommendations (or really good starting points) would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu 10.04 with HD flash

  Just noticed that 10.04 is out. My media server has been packed away for a few months but I might dust if off and give 10.04 a shot but I thought I'd see if anyone has any success stories with HD flash in either Chrome or Firefox. I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 and it was a large enough pain to get VDPAU working with my Zotac Ion-ITX-C board (eventually found an mplayer PPA that had it compiled in) From reading the 10.04 docs it looks like this is standard now, but I'm wondering about streaming HD, from, say flash or Divx. I've never been able to get HD flash to play without it being extremely choppy, and I chalk this up to the lack of hardware assisted decoding like VDPAU (a guess). My board certainly isn't a competitor in CPU power or memory, which is why i've needed the HW accelerated decoding for HD vids in the past. Just wondering if anyone has had any success stories playing HD vid online (flash, divx or what have you)

• FTPS SSH Host Key after IP Address Change

  I have a Secure FTP (FTPS) server that my remote sites to upload files to daily via scripted routines that run. I have had issues in the past when upgrading hardware and deploying new servers causing the RSA Fingerprint to change for that server. Then all my remote sites can't connect until I have the old key removed (usually via ssh_keygen -r myserver.com). I now have to change the IP address for myserver.com and I wondered if there is anyway to proactively generate new host keys so that when the server address changes all my FTPS client remote sites don't break?

• WD My Passport Essential SmartWare External Hard Drive

  Hi Ive been gifted a My Passport SmartWare External Hard Drive(500gb). I used it and it works fine and installed WDSmartWare The Second time i used it,still fine,but I took it out without using the "Safely Remove Hardware" So the third time I used it,there's a bubble come out that says: USB Device Not Recognized One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.For assistance in solving the problem, click this message. I tried connecting it to other USB Ports but it didn't work I tried Uninstalling WDSmarWare and connect it but it didn't work Please help me I like this hard drive so much and I spoilt it easily XD P.S I think about 13% has been used up in the Hard Drive P.S.S Other USBs can work fine in the computer P.S.S.S I tried connecting it to other computer and works fine OMG
