• debian mysql server always down

  I am hosting a mysql server in a debian 6.0.4 server hosted in linode, the new data is frequently written into the mysql server using R, about 30-40 "write" per minute, about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Recently I found that the mysql server seem to down frequently, always give me error that mysql server cannot be connected through socket. I wonder if this is caused by my high demand to my mysql server, and if this can be solved. I am definitely a newbie in manage server.   A few newbie OSX questions: Despite the fact that most applications can be installed by dragging them to the Applications directory, some software still requires the creation of a separate program folder. Where should I put this folder? Does it matter? Is the Applications directory special somehow, or is it just a convenient folder with a custom icon? If I move one of these program folders later on, will the program still work? Will shortcuts to files in the folder break? Is there something similar to a registry in OSX? Thanks!

  I am a linux newbie so excuse me if I ask silly things. I recently find out that if I edit GRUB before booting and I add rw init=/bin/bash I end up with a root shell. Being in a condition that I want to understand everything I would like to know why this happens. I mean is it a bug? is it a feature? is it there to help admins to fix things as it only works if you have physical access to a computer? Which part are we exploiting? GRUB or the actual kernel?   I am newbie with Apache's mod_rewrite and I'm having some difficulties getting it to do what I want. In my static directory, I have some javascript files (.js) with 2 kind of filename: xxxx.js which is the standard file name AT_xxxx.js (with prefixed filename) which has been duplicated from previous standard file name but also contains my customizations I would like to parse requests for each standard requested javascript file (xxxx.js) to check if a customized file exists (AT_xxxx.js) including all sub-directories. Then, in this case, use the custom file instead of the standard file (perhaps by internal redirect). I tried to figure this out for hours but something is still wrong. Note: Also, I don't know how to find custom files in sub-directories.   I'm a newbie in desktop recording and screencasting. I didn't find a suitable free application to do all the things I want it to do, but I did enjoy using jing. I would expect such an application to have these features: choose the whole desktop, a region, a window to record zoom in an area, and camera move save the recorded movie to a compressed format have basic editing tools have the mouse highlighting feature (either a sonar blip or something similar) highlight window/field on the screen, any trick will do display pressed keys/key combinations (like iphone does) So the question is: Which free desktop recording/screencasting software would you recommend on windows? It doesn't have to have all those features, just tell me your favorable experiences. Please suggest tools that would do mouse/keys/areas highlight tricks. I've come up with the script below and it works once but then I have to reload the script to do it again. I want it to hit Cancel every time the question box comes up.   Hi All, I'm a newbie developer wanting to learn a bit about Virtualization (from the IT point of view, not theoretical/academic). What I'd like to do: Prepare a machine Install VMWare or VirtualBox Prepare 3 Guest OSes (one for Win2k8 server, 2 for Ubuntu Server) Win2k8 will run SQL Server 2k8 and IIS (for ASP.NET MVC deployment) 1 Ubuntu Server for Drupal, SugarCRM, MediaWiki, typical LAMP stuff 1 Ubuntu Server for Java (Tomcat/Jetty + MySQL/PostgreSQL) What I'd like to know: What would be the ideal Host OS such that the Host OS should not spend too many resources on itself but should boost these instances of VMs (e.g: does Win2k8 performs better vs Linux?) When i try to connect to bitbucket: ssh -Tv [email protected] I got the error - connection timed out. But when I disable iptables i can connect without any problems. What am i missing? Should I add any additional rules?

  I'm a complete newbie with regard to managing Apache, so excuse me if I'm phrasing something incorrectly. I have a web site -- say, http://domain.com. The problem is that when I try to open http://domain.com/index.html in a web browser it displays the page, but when I attempt to access http://domain.com/Index.html (note capital I), it responds with HTTP 404. How do I configure Apache to serve both these files (and directories, for that matter) in a case-insensitive manner? Current httpd.conf is here. EDIT Dan C, thanks for a hint. I basically want to allow users to download files from my server and don't really want them to be aware that Index.html and index.html are in fact different. I'm also very willing to know as to what are the ramifications of this decision.

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right.   Hi there. I'm running a Tomcat 6.0.28 at port 8080 in a Debian Squeeze box. I'm a newbie in tomcat. I would like to change the location of manager and host-manager applications. That is, instead of going to: http://myserver:8080/manager/html I would like that to be: http://myserver:8080/somesubdirectory/manager/html Is this possible? If yes, how can I achieve this? I would really appreciate any help in this. I've been trying to change the context of /etc/tomcat6/Catalina/localhost/manager.xml from /manager to /somesubdirectory/manager with no success. • Specify Credentials to run Powershell Script to Query AD

  I want to run a powershell script to query AD from a machine that is NOT on the domain. Basically I want to query to see if there is computer account already on the domain for this machine and create it if there is not. Because this has to happen before the machine joins the domain I assume I will need to specify some credentials to enable it to run. (I'm pretty new to Powershell, so apologies if this is a newbie question!) • How to Approach CentOS Back Up on GoDaddy Dedicated Hosting

  Does anyone have any experience with backing up a dedicated server at GoDaddy or anywhere else? I have a CentOS system. I recently made a big newbie mistake working on linux and toasted my server. I had to start over from scratch b/c I damaged it so bad. GoDaddy says I need to handle it all myself b/c I am not paying them for back ups. Does anyone have any idea on how to approach this back up? I'm not sure how a backup on dedicated hosting would be different than a normal linux back up. In any case, I don't know how to do normal linux backups.

• Mac Mini won't boot with USB Drive connected

  Newbie here. I have a 2012 MacMini with 2 x 3Tb Seagate GoFlex Desk external hard drives. Both drives have their own power supplies and work perfectly. I use both MacOS and Windows7 on the Mac for different reasons. Both boot and work fine. The only problem is neither MacOS or Windows will boot while the two USB drives are connected. I must disconnect the USB cables, boot and reconnect them. Then all works fine. Its rather annoying since this is mostly a Media Centre and you really don't want to be playing with cables every day, and I don't leave my stuff on over night. Can anyone help? Thanks Jens

• Distributed computing for a company? Is there such a 'free' thing?

  I am new to the whole distributed computing / cloud thing. But I had an idea at work for our multimedia stuff like movie encoding / cpu intensive things tasks (which sometimes take a few hours). Is there a 'free' (linux?) way to go about using a Windows machine, and offsetting those cpu cycles for that task to say 10 servers that are generally idle (cpu wise)? I'm just curious if there is a way to do this or am I just grasping at straws here. My thought is that a 'cloud' setup would achieve this, however like I stated initially, I am a total newbie when it comes to it. This is just an idea, looking for some thoughts? Anyone achieve this?

• How to configure squid for retrieving (and caching) directly my static resources?

  I have an Apache/Tomcat/Spring tc Server running on CentOS EC2 VM. I would like to install squid on the same machine as a proxy for retrieving (directly i.e. without forwarding the request to Apache/Tomcat) and caching static content ONLY identified by URIs : /images, /css or /js. Other URIs should be forwarded to the normal Web Server and not cached. Since I am a newbie, I didn't find from squid documentation how to configure squid for this desired behavior (and if it is even possible).   Hello, Pardon the newbie question - I haven't worked with manually compiling Apache modules (or anything) before. I am trying to get the mod_concat module going. It seems simple enough - just requires downloading the mod_concat.c file and then running: axps -c mod_concat.c This is new to me. Does it matter which directory I put mod_concat.c before running this command? I ran it from my home directory, and I see some new files - mod_concat.la, mod_concat.lo, mod_concat.o, and mod_concat.slo - along with a new subfolder called .libs/ that contains mod_concat.so along with some other files. I'm not sure where to go from here, I have a feeling these files were created in the wrong place. Don't I need mod_concat.so to be in my apache modules directory with the rest? • Win7 safe mode pretends it's Xp?

  hi there, just a question in between. a friend of mine brougth me a laptop that does not work anymore and wanted me to check whether i can do something. she told me its windows 7, and startup screen and login screen look like it. howevere, as she gets a bluescreen on startup it is only possible to boot in safe mode where the system pretends to be windows xp sp3. the system also may have 1 gig of ram but the system itself states that it has 954 mb of ram which is a value i´ve never seen before. is there everything corrupt from operating system to hardware, or am i just a newbie that does not know that windows 7 pretends to be winxp sp3 in safe mode? or is this laptop just the victim of an illegal, crazy copy of xp sold as win7? maybe some strange chinese stuff? i also recognized that the startup screen of Outlook Express is pronounced as "Outllok Express" (no typo) i´m kinda confused, maybe someone could put light into this ;) thanks
