• Is it possible to run dhcpd3 as non-root user in a chroot jail?

  Hi everyone. I would like to run dhcpd3 from a chroot jail on Debian Lenny. At the moment, I can run it as root from my jail. Now I want to do this as non-root user (as "-u blah -t /path/to/jail" Bind option). If I start my process like this : start-stop-daemon --chroot /home/jails/dhcp --chuid dhcp \ --start --pidfile /home/jails/dhcp/var/run/dhcp.pid --exec /usr/sbin/dhcpd3 I get stuck with these errors : Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.1.1 Copyright 2004-2008 Internet Systems Consortium.   Hi. I have a large application, part of which relies on a set of 3 webservices. I'm currently in the process of writing an Ant build script to build and package the application into an EAR file. When building the web sub-project for this application I use the <jwsc> task in Ant to compile the webservices. error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

• IIS: No Session being handed out, but only in production

  I've reproduced this in a simple project - details below. It's a WCF service in ASP.NET compatibility mode. What I'm seeing is that when run on the dev machine (Win7), a HTTP session id is available inside the service operation (HttpContext.Current.Session is non-null). But when deployed to the server (Win2k8R2), I get "No session". On both machines the app is configured to use the classic app pool, and the app pools themselves are configured identically as far as I can tell. The only differences I can discern between the two applications is that on the dev box, under "Handler Mappings", ISAPI-dll is disabled (not on the server), and on the server there's a spurious handler called "AboMapperCustom-7105160" (does not exist on the dev box). What should I be looking at next? Am I missing something head-slappingly simple?   I am running Debian Wheezy on my server, and have just installed a VNC server and Xfce. I have come across a problem: whenever I open a terminal emulator through VNC, I get an error box with this message: Failed to execute child. getpt failed: No such file or directory. This happens with every terminal I try to run. I can still run commands through SSH, however. It's just the terminal that won't open.   I'm setting up a new dev Macbook Pro, and trying to replace bash with zsh. I installed zsh and can run it to change shell in a session. When I use sudo chsh -s /bin/zsh username I get the error message: chsh: Operation was denied because the current credentials do not have the appropriate privileges.   We are having a strange problem with our SVN repository One particular project is failing to check out on some dev's workstations. All branches, tags and trunk fail at the same point of checkout Other projects in the repository can be checked out fine One of our devs can check out the problem project fine. We have tried 3 different versions of TortoiseSVN (both UI and command line) and another build of win32svn. The one who can check out is using the same client version as one who cannot. Any ideas?

• OpenIndiana installation hangs at 2% - Preparing disk for OpenIndiana installation

  I've been trying to install OpenIndiana on an HP DL320 G6 for a while now. I've got a 16GB HP SDHC card in the onboard slot and a SATA CD-Rom with oi-dev-151a-text-x86.iso burnt to a disc. Installation seems to progress fine until I get to the actual installation portion. The SD card is picked up as a USB Disk. All the other configuration options are very 'normal' (there really aren't many options to begin with). Automatic NIC configuration. The installer starts "Installing OpenIndiana", does a few steps, then gets to "Preparing disk for OpenIndiana installation" at 2%; and just sits there. I've let it sit for half an hour now ans still no progress. How can I get past this issue? PS I'm not terribly familiar with OpenSolaris, but am with FreeBSD and *nix CLIs in general.

I've read lits of stuff like http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/35692526/question-multiple-row-in.aspx, and http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/tips/dm-0403wilkins/ and tricks like ALTER TABLE lalala APPEND ON works somewhat (the difference between a dd if=/dev/zero and insert is still a factor 10) but I would like to be able to find the counters or other performance indicators that actually show why it makes sense to use those tricks. For example: What is the metric called that shows me that it is buffer pages allocation (FSCR stuff) that is the problem Where do I see that the insert time is hampered by clustered indexes? I find db2top very useful but im still searching for more direct view of "this is your bottleneck" methods

• IE8 Developer Tools won't open

  Just installed IE8 on WinXP. Trying to use the Dev Tools but, clicking on the menu item or hitting F12 doesn't do anything. I can see the option in the tools menu, just can't use it. I've checked to make sure it wasn't opening minimized or off screen and I've checked the registry settings used to disable them. Those registry keys don't even exists. Suggestions? I was going to reinstall, but, thought I'd check here first.

• Can the Dell PowerEdge T320 boot from a USB stick in hard drive emulation mode?

  I am trying to install FreeNAS on a Dell PowerEdge T320. I've followed the instructions here (http://doc.freenas.org/index.php/Burning_an_IMG_File) to write the .img file to four different USB sticks with dd if=FreeNAS-9.2.1.5-RELEASE-x64.img of=/dev/sde, but I can't boot off of any of them. When I try to boot, I get the following screen: F1 FreeBSD F2 FreeBSD F3 Drive 0 Then it auto-selects F1 and either prints # about once a second forever, or it sits with a blinking cursor doing nothing. Forum posts and the wiki page linked above say to set the USB boot emulation mode to hard disk (as opposed to auto or CD/DVD/floppy), and older Dell PowerEdge models including the T310 have this option in the BIOS settings, but I cannot find it on the T320 with the latest BIOS 2.1.2. I have even tried writing the USB image to a USB hard disk, but with the same lack of success. Has anyone been able to find this USB boot setting on a T320, or been able to boot FreeNAS/FreeBSD from USB in some other way on a T320?

• IIS7 Network Bios command limit and disabling file change notifications.

  Having experienced IIS for many years I've hit this error various times in the past, and understand it, the gist being IIS is attempting to setup so many file change notifications over a UNC share that it is hitting a specified limit of active commands. However, whilst I understand this is a registry change on the endpoints, in our internal network we're starting to hit this when running certain domains that have large content (and the content is then stored out of source control and instead on a dumb network store). Given this is a testing environment and rather than changing registry settings (which may not even work for client (dev) machines that run Vista IIS), I'd like to stop IIS setting up all these file change notifications. Is this possible to do on a per site basis? additionally the configuration can't be in the web.config, if this means having to disable FCN's for the entire IIS server this would be preferred. • NFS to NFS mount

  I have a machine that I need to bridge NFS files to. Can I mount an NFS directory on machine2 from machine1 and then mount the mounted NFS directory on machine2 on machine3 via NFS? Do you see any problems with that? I am basically bridging some subnet domains this way, in a certain fashion. My development machine is on a different and separate (unbridged) than where I would like to use the files, and I would like this machine1(dev machine) - machine2(passthrough machine) - machine3(test machine) connection. And no there is no way to move the test machine as it's a chassis :) and it's two buildings away.

• Mac OS X bypass proxy for certain domains

  In college I'm behind a proxy. When I try to visit one of my local Apache virtual hosts behind the proxy, then my college DNS attempts to resolve the host, thus bypassing my local host file. In the advanced setting for proxies you seem to be able to enter values into "Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains". I added the last 2 to the end - "*.local, 169.254/16, *.dev, *.sb". But it doesn't work. Is there a solution?

• How do I mount an EBS root volume to a windows instance in Amazon EC2

  So basically, I created a large windows server for development, and then I created a micro windows server for production. I set up everything how I wanted it on my development server, and then i unmounted the drives, and mounted them to my micro server. Now I'm trying to get back into my large windows development server, and I'm getting the error. Invalid value 'i-4896ce28' for instanceId. Instance does not have a volume attached at root (/dev/sda1) this error pops up when I try to start my large windows server. I've remounted the drives to the large development server, and I still get this message. I'm not really sure what to do, I've read other posts and everyone is giving these almost like command line arguments and talking about other tools, and I really have no clue what any of that means, or where I even have an option to enter any commands without be logged into a specific instance.

• Apache Unclean shutdown of previous apache run

  I'm having problem with running Apache2.2 on my Vista machine. When I clean install Apache it works just fine, but after I installed PHP, I'm getting this error message in logs. [Fri Oct 23 21:29:02 2009] [warn] pid file C:/Dev/Apache2.2/logs/httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous Apache run? Apache service was stopped when installing PHP. I did only one shutdown before instalation via Apache Service Monitor. Deleting httpd.pid and starting again doesn't help. I even tried to lookup process with PID in that file, but there is no such process.

• Disable linux read and write file cache on partition

  How do i disable the linux file cache on a xfs partition (both read an write). We have a xfs partition over a hardware RAID that stores our RAW HD Video. Most of the shoots are 50-300gb each so the linux cache has a hit-rate of 0.001%. I have tryed the sync option but it still fills up the cache when copinging the files. ( about 30x over per shoot :P ) /etc/fstab: /dev/sdb1 /video xfs sync,noatime,nodiratime,logbufs=8 0 1 Im running debian lenny if it helps.

  A bit of background first - I'm trying to configure a MicroBlaze Linux (big-endian version) system on a Xilinx ML506 eval board. The goal is to use the second partition of a CompactFlash card attached to the Xilinx SystemACE controller. So far, root in initramfs works and after boot, I can mount and use said partition, no problem. But if I try to use it right from the getgo with the "root=/dev/xsa2" kernel command line parameter, the system hangs with [...] Freeing unused kernel memory: 143k freed Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x00000004 And that's it - no regdump, no call trace, no further nothing from the serial console, even though kernel has been configured with debugging enabled. Now, I'm pretty new at this, so is there something else I should be doing to see something more informative from the kernel?

• Ubuntu keyboard detection from bash script

  Excuse my ignorance of linux OS/hardware issues...I'm just a programmer :) I have an application that calls out to some bash scripts to launch external applications, in this case Firefox. The application runs on a kiosk with touch screen capability. When launching Firefox, I also launch a virtual keyboard application that allows the user to have keyboard input. However, the kiosk also has both PS/2 and USB slots that would allow a user to plug-in a keyboard. If a keyboard were plugged in, it would be nice if I didn't have to launch the virtual keyboard and provide more screen space for the Firefox window. Is there a way for me to detect if a keyboard is plugged in from the bash script? Would it show up in /dev, and if so, would it show up at a consistent location? Would it make a difference if the user used a PS/2 or USB keyboard? Thanks!

• Cache Refresh in Chrome

  I dunno what exactly it's called, by cache refresh I mean, refresh the page after clearing its cache. I don't want to clear the entire browser cache. I prefer Chrome's Dev panel against firebug... don't ask me why. But I can't seem to cache refresh my pages. In FF, I know it to be Shift+Refresh. In chrome, I've tried Ctrl+R, Ctrl+Refresh, Alt+Refresh, Shift+Refresh but none of them work. EDIT: I got a Notable Question Badge for the lamest question I've ever asked. FML.

• SQL 2008 Database tuning advisor won’t start

  For some reason I can't get DTA to connect to my development machine. It connects to a remote DB just fine but when I point it to my dev machine I get an error saying: Failed to initialize MSDB database for tuning (exit code: -1073741819). I'm pretty sure it's not a permissions issue since I've used profiler to capture what it's doing and all of the commands it's run so far look fine and are being run under my account which is associated with the sysadmin role, when I run them in sql management studio they go through fine. I'm pretty convinced that the problem is related to creating the objects in MSDB that are used by DTA but I tried creating these manually (I found scripts on the web) and it just seems to push the problem along the line slightly. I'm going out of my mind - have even tried reinstalling SQL but that's not fixed it. I'm using SQL 2008 with SP1 (10.0.2531) on windows server 2008 (patched up to date). SAVE ME!!!!!

• Can't create VM with virt-install on Debian wheezy

  Cant find any answers anywhere so here goes. I am trying to CREATE a new virtual machine using the virt-install command from a console on a Debian wheezy install. I keep getting the following output: Starting install... ERROR internal error process exited while connecting to monitor: char device redirected to /dev/pts/1 inet_listen_opts: bind(ipv4,127.0.0.1,5951): Cannot assign requested address inet_listen_opts: FAILED I assumed that the port (5951 in this case) was being used judging by the error message and other sites I visited for an answer, but the same error occurs whatever number I use for the port. I cant see that port being listened upon in netstat either. Anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

• Supplementary Developer Laptop

  I'm looking to buy a laptop with the following specs for a developer. The goal will be to have a development machine supplementing the devs desktop. During work hours the dev will be on a beefy desktop. For working while on the go: trains, client sites, code camps, it would be nice to have a machine which can run Visual Studio 2008 without needing to remote desktop into their primary machine. What do you think is the lowest cost laptop meeting this need? Here are the specs I have in mind: SSD drive 64GB-doesn't need to be huge, most data is stored on servers. Will need to fit Windows 7, IIS, SQL Server, and Visual Studio 2010. RAM-3GB processor =Pentium Core 2 duo Screen size = 14 inches. OS doesn't matter. It will be paved with Windows 7 Ultimate optical drive omitted would be a plus. weight and battery life aren't so important because the machine will be plugged in almost all the time.
