• Is it a bad idea to release software on the night before Christmas?

  We're about to go live with a new version of our system. It's getting really close to Christmas. I work in a very small company. Everyone will be on leave or sporadically available over the next week or so. I've argued with my boss that this is very risky and that we should go live in the new year when everyone is back and when we can provide full support. He is unflinching - he argues that we need to go live sooner - so that we can get new users and more revenue which we need. The number of new users will be minor amount over the next week or so. There has been a decent amount of system testing performed on the system. However a new live system, in my experience, needs a lot of care and attention in the first few days. Am I being pessimistic or realistic? Update - January: The system did not go live over Christmas. Ongoing system testing revealed various problems. So no support issues to deal with. Still preparing for release...

• Two-way databinding of a custom templated asp.net control

  I hate long code snippets and I'm sorry about this one, but it turns out that this asp.net stuff can't get much shorter and it's so specific that I haven't been able to generalize it without a full code listing. I just want simple two-way, declarative, edit-only databinding to a single instance of an object. Not a list of objects of a type with a bunch of NotImplementedExceptions for Add, Delete, and Select, but just a single view-state persisted object. This is certainly something that can be done but I've struggled with an implementation for years. This newest, closest implementation was inspired by this article from 4-Guys-From-Rolla. Unfortunately, after implementing, I'm getting the following error and I don't know what I'm missing: System.InvalidOperationException: Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control. If I don't use Bind(), and only use Eval() functionality, it works. In that way, the error is especially confusing. Update: Actually, using Eval() does NOT work, but using <%# Container.SampleString %> works. However, Eval("SampleString") gives the same error. That leads me back to this article I found earlier but had discarded. Now I believe it might be related, though I haven't cracked it yet ... • Stacking two pictures with captions side by side and centered in Wordpress

  Hi all - this is driving me absolutely nuts. I'm not the most experienced with CSS, so I'm hoping it is something simple. I'm running Wordpress 2.9.2 with "The Morning After" theme. I am trying to write a post where I want to display two small pictures, with captions, side-by-side and centered in the middle of the page. If I use "aligncenter" the pics are in the center, but stacked one on top of the other. My first thought was to wrap the images in a div using: <div style="text-align:center;">image code</div> but that doesn't work. Now, if I wrap in a centered div like that and omit the [caption] tags, it works, but I need the captions. Those caption tags are translated by Wordpress into it's own div of class wp-caption. I've also tried wrapping each separate image in its own div within a parent centered div wrapper. Here is the pertinent parts of the style.css - please let me know if you need any other info, and if you can help me, I will postpone jumping off the nearest bridge! Thanks!! • Linking problems using libcurl with Visual C++ 2005: "unresolved external symbol __imp__curl_easy_se

  Hi, I am planning to use libcurl in my project. I had downloaded the library source,built and integrated it in a small POC application. I am able to build and run the application without any issues with the generated libcurl.dll and libcurl_imp.lib files. Now when I integrate the same library in my project I am getting linker errors. 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_setopt 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_perform 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_cleanup 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_global_init 6foo.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _imp_curl_easy_init I have researched and tried all manners of workarounds like adding CURL_STATICLIB definitions , additional libraries , changing to /MT even copying the libs to the release directory but nothing seems to work. As far as I can see the only difference between approach #1 and #2 in my steps are #1 is an console application using the libcurl.dll while in my main project this is another dll which is trying to link to libcurl.dll.. Would that necessitate any change in approach? Can I use the same generated multi threaded DLL /MD file for both(Tried /MT also with no success)? Any other ideas? • What would be the optimal disk config for SQL Server 2008 R2?

  We have a new Dell R710 server that came with the following storage configuration: 8 x 146GB SAS 10k 6Gbps disks 1 x Perc H700 Integrated Controller (2 x 4 disks - 2 ports each supporting 4 disks) What would be the optimal configuration if we were just after performance? What would be the optimal configuration if we were after performance but wanted data resilience. As per 2 above but with a hot standby disk? We plan to run Windows 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2. Maximising storage capacity isn't a prime concern.

• Command works partially when run from startup applications

  I have this script (or rather a set of commands which has permission to execute) to enable two finger scrolling and two finger tap = right click The script is located in /home/gaurav/Multigesture/multigesture. When I run the following command in terminal, two finger scrolling and two finger tap = right click start working. I have to run this command each time I boot my laptop. "/home/gaurav/Multigesture/multigesture" So I put this command in the startup applications so that I dont have to run the command each time I boot but when I reboot two finger scrolling is not working, only two finger tap = right click works. What could be the problem, If the command works fine from the terminal then how come it is working partially when i put it into startup applications. • How does Ubuntu One sync two machines with identical file content?

  I have a notebook and a desktop computer, both running Ubuntu 11.10. I used to sync between the two with the help of Unison, so both computers have identical content in the Documents folder. I decided to try UbuntuOne. My question is, if I activate UbuntuOne for the two machines for the folders with identical contents, will UbuntuOne be able to recognise that, or will it sync to the cloud everything twice (and then down on the other machine). To put it another way, will I end up having two copies of everything on the machines and on the cloud, and therefore should delete the identical files on one of the machines before activating UbuntuOne, or not. Thank you, and if there is already something on the net about this, I'd be glad if somebody posted the link here.

• Two Weeks As A Software Estimation Rule of Thumb?

  I saw a blog posting that spoke to me: http://james-iry.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-estimate-software.html Oddly, this is the kind of estimate that I tend to do on smaller projects. Just about everything is "two weeks" as that is comfortably far enough out. I once had an instructor walk us through how to create a more detailed estimate, wherein we already had the requirements up front, etc. and even after all the careful tabulation and such the final instruction was "Now that you have all this documentation go ahead and double it." Agile practitioners seem to like two weeks also as a sprint length. Is there something magical about two weeks? Is it a hrair number for our psyches or some other kind of crutch? Do you have an immediate default fall-back schedule strategy when you are pressed for an initial delivery date?

• Can web applications running on IIS7 Windows Server 2008 R2 be forced to immediately detect changes to hosts file?

  We have several web applications running on several load-balanced servers. We want to have our web applications communicate with each other without first traversing outside the load balancer. For example: http://appA.example.com is running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 http://appB.example.com is also running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 The load balancer's public IP address is 198.51.100.3 By default, when appA on 192.0.2.1 makes a call to a WCF service hosted in appB, the HTTP request is routed to 192.51.100.3; this establishes a new session and the load balancer will direct the call to either of the two servers We want the call to be routed to the instance of appB running on the same server so we add 192.0.2.1 appB.example.com to the hosts file on 192.0.2.1. This eventually works, but we either have to wait for the app pool to naturally recycle or do a manual reset before appA sees the new address. Is there any way to have the change automatically detected without having to recycle the app pool?

• Is is possible to get a patch included in the current release? If so, how?

  So a while back I reported a bug in Compiz's Place Window plugin. It's a fairly major regression for people affected by it: mainly those using Gnome-Fallback, judging by the reports. A patch surfaced a short time later. I created a PPA for testing and everybody involved so far is reporting the issues are fixed. It even fixes another bug. I've done testing with a standard Unity desktop and can say (for my testing) no adverse effects were visible. I want to get this pushed to Ubuntu right now for two main reasons: I'm selfish. I don't want to need to update my PPA every time a new version of Compiz is pushed to 12.04. I don't want Ubuntu users seeing their windows flying around because of a silly little bug. I want this patch pushed to Ubuntu's version of Compiz as soon as possible, so we can mark these bugs fixed and move on with our lives. Whose leg do I have to hump to get this pulled into Ubuntu right now? I don't maintain this project and it's an upstream thing but it's fairly integral to Ubuntu. I could go to Compiz but I imagine that if they accept the patch, it'll be months (at least a release) before it's anywhere near Ubuntu. And when I do find the right person, how can I make the process as slick as possible for them? I want them to see my request, go "Yup, that all looks great, done" and that be it. I don't want seventeen rounds of emails addressing aspects of the patch. More importantly, I don't want to waste their time either. And what do I have to provide them? My packaging skills are... lamentable. This was my first attempt at patching a package for redistribution so I've probably made every single packaging error known to man. Will they be happy with the original patch (so they can apply it themselves) or should I repackage things so the diff/changelog is a little cleaner (it took me a few goes and the versioning is all over the place). Note: This question is about Compiz but I'd prefer if answers could address other styles of package too so we have an authoritative and comprehensive thread of how to get things fixed.

• No file sharing between two server 2008 R2 machines.

  I have just replaced XP with Server 2008 R2 on my test sever, and have been running 2008 R2 on my dev laptop. When my server was still XP, file sharing just worked, but now it just doesn't. I've enabled everything I can about sharing, and I can ping the server by machine name, but if I try an access a share, I get asked for a password. The passowrd dialog assumes a domain for this user, but neither my laptop admin user nor my server admin user can get past this login. What am I doing wrong?

• What are my options for a secure External File Share in Server 2008 R2?

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine installed on a home network with a number of files that need to be shared in a few different scenarios. I would like for all three scenarios to have a solution with some sort of encyption to protect the data during transfer. Scenario 1: I need to access files from my laptop (Mac OSX) or another computer outside of the network. This option seems like the easy one to answer in that I could use LogMeIn, the windows VPN, etc. to create such a connection. Scenario 2: I need to provide access to another user with minimal installation / configuration on his or her end. This makes me think of the new FTP 7.5 provided with Server 2008 R2 but i'm not sure of the details: Does it support SSH or some other form of encryption?, can an OSX user connect?, etc. My question here is what are my options? I really just don't know where to get started...

• BizTalk &ndash; Routing failure on Delivery Notifications (BizTalk 2006 R2 to 2013)

Reminder: what are delivery notifications Mechanism BizTalk has the ability to automatically publish positive acknowledgments (ACK) when it has succeeded transmitting a message or negative acknowledgments (NACK) in case of a transmission failure. Orchestrations can use delivery notifications to subscribe to those ACKs and NACKs in order to know if a message sent on a one-way send port has been successfully transmitted. Delivery Notifications can be “activated” in two ways: The most common and easy way is to set the Delivery Notification property of a logical send port (in the orchestration designer) to Transmitted: Another way is to set the BTS.AckRequired context property of the message to be sent to true: NOTE: fundamentally, those methods are strictly equivalent since the fact of setting the Delivery Notification to Transmitted on the send port only tells BizTalk the BTS.AckRequired context property has to be set to true on the outgoing message. Related context properties ACKs and NACKs have a common set of propoted context properties, which are : Propriété Description AckType Equals ACK when successful or NACK otherwise AckID MessageID of the message concerned by the acknowledgment AckOwnerID InstanceID of the instance associated with the acknowledgment AckSendPortID ID of the send port AckSendPortName Name of the send port AckOutboundTransportLocation URI of the send port AckReceivePortID ID of the port the message came from AckReceivePortName Name of the port the message came from AckInboundTransportLocation URI of the port the message came from Detailed behavior The way Delivery Notifications are handled by BizTalk is peculiar compared to the standard behavior of the Message Box: if no active subscription exists for the acknowledgment, it is simply discarded. The direct consequence of this is that there can be no routing failure for an acknowledgment, and an acknowledgment cannot be suspended. Moreover, when a message is sent to a send port where Delivery Notification = Transmitted, a correlation set is initialized and a correlation token is attached to the message (Context property: CorrelationToken). This correlation token will also be attached to the acknowledgment. So when the acknowledgment is issued, it is automatically routed to the source orchestration. Finally, when a NACK is received by the source orchestration, a DeliveryFailureException is thrown, which can be caught in Catch section. Context of the problem Consider this scenario: In an orchestration, Delivery Notifications are activated on a One-Way send port In case of a transmission failure, the messaging instance is suspended and the orchestration catches an exception (DeliveryFailureException). When the exception is caught, the orchestration does some logging and then terminates (thanks to a Terminate shape). So that leaves only the suspended messaging instance, waiting to be resumed. Symptoms Once the problem that caused the transmission failure is solved, the messaging instance is resumed. Considering what was said in the reminder, we would expect the instance to complete, leaving no active or suspended instance. Nevertheless, the result is that the messaging instance is once more suspended, this time because of a routing failure: The routing failure report shows that the suspended message has the following attached properties: Explanation Those properties clearly indicate that the message being suspended is an acknowledgment (ACK in this case), which was published in the message box and was supended because no subscribers were found. This makes sense, since the source orchestration was terminated before we resumed the messaging instance. So its subscription to the acknowledgments was no longer active when the ACK was published, which explains the routing failure. But this behavior is in direct contradiction with what was said earlier: an acknowledgment must be discarded when no subscriber is found and therefore should not be suspended. Cause It is indeed an outright bug, which appeared with the SP1 of BizTalk 2006 R2 and was never corrected since then: not in the next 4 CUs, not in BizTalk 2009, not in 2010 and not event in 2013 – though I haven’t tested CU1 and CU2 for this last edition, but I bet there is nothing to be expected from those CUs (on this particular point). Side effects This bug can have pretty nasty side effects: this behavior can be propagated to other ports, due to routing mechanisms. For instance: you have configured the ESB Toolkit and have activated the “Enable routing failure for failed messages”. The result will be that the ESB Exception SQL send port will also try and publish ACKs or NACKs concerning its own messaging instances. In itself, this is already messy, but remember that those acknowledgments will also have the source correlation token attached to them… See how far it goes? Well, actually there is more: in SQL send ports, transactions will be rolled back because of the routing failure (I guess it also happens with other adapters - like Oracle, but I haven’t tested them). Again, think of what happens when the send port is the ESB Exception send port: your BizTalk box is going mad, but you have no idea since no exception can be written in the exception database! All of this can be tricky to diagnose, I can tell you that… Solution There is no real solution, only a work-around, but it won’t solve all of the problems and side effects. The idea is to create an orchestration which subscribes to all acknowledgments. That is to say: The message type of the incoming message will be XmlDocument The BTS.AckType property exists The logical receive port will use direct binding By doing so, all acknowledgments will be consumed by an instance of this orchestration, thus avoiding the routing failure. Here is an example of what this orchestration could look like: In order not to pollute the HAT and the DTA Db (after all, this orchestration is only meant to be a palliative to some faulty internal BizTalk mechanism, so there should be no trace of its execution), all tracking must be deactivated:
