• Configure an Azure VM for Dynamic DNS for Cloud Services

  I am trying to setup an azure VM with proper DNS to allow multiple cloud services to communicate across cloud service boundaries. As I understand it, I need to provide my own DNS server. I do not have any on-premise infrastructure, so I am trying to configure an Azure VM to act as my DNS. This SO question (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21858926/azure-how-to-connect-one-cloud-service-with-other-in-one-virtual-network) is very similar to my setup. This article (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windowsazure/jj156088.aspx) describes my particular case: Name resolution between virtual machines and role instances located in the same virtual network, but different cloud services Here is what I have done: Created Azure Virtual Network and declared subnets for each of my cloud services. Created an Azure VM (Windows 2012 R2) with DNS enabled RDP to the VM and enabled the DNS role and installed features Added the appropriate NetworkConfiguration xml section to each of my cloud services .csfg files Re-deployed my cloud services I have verified that I setup the virtual network and networkconfiguration properly because my cloud service hosts are able to communicate with each other if I use the internal ips. However, name resolution doesn't appear to be working, and it doesn't appear that my cloud service roles can communicate with my DNS server. How do I configure my VM so that my different cloud services roles register themselves with my DNS server? EDIT: I think I am 1 step closer to getting this to work. The cloud services that I was using are in an old affinity group which is not supported by VMs, so I was unable to add my VM into my virtual network. I created a new VNET in a new affinity group with my VM added into it. However, I still don't know how to configure the azure VM's DNS server so that the cloud services register themselves for name resolution. Also, an added bonus guaranteed to get a +1 would be to explain if it is possible to register a DNS entry for the VIP for an internal endpoint of my cloud services so we can get load balancing. • SATA HDD stuttering on reads (LED on)

  I hope I can get some new ideas to solve the issue. What I have: AMD Phenom II X4 905e Box, Sockel AM3 Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4, AMD 790X, AM3 ATX WD Caviar GreenPower 1,5TB SATA II 4GB Kit OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum Low-Voltage CL7 HIS HD 4670 iSilence4 DDR3 1024MB Native HDMI Dual-DVI, PCI-Express Behavior: Everything works normally excepting the HDD accesses. The drive seems to get stuck in reading data (LED drive by Mainboard is on for a while) then recovers and goes on. There is a delay of more than 30s sometimes. Often it is a matter of 5-10s. This does not seem related to the workload of the disk. What I tried so far: Use different SATA port: I switched from the SATA3 to SATA2 then the SATA driven by the CPU, no difference. Turned AHCI off, drove the SATA in IDE mode, same behavior, now I felt like the HDD has problems Deactivated energy saving settings (BeQuiet, ...), disabled 3 CPUs (msconfig) supposing some race condition or trouble with changing freqs, same trouble With Windows7 Professional 64Bit, I installed the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B976418&x=8&y=9 with no success. The problem description matches what I experienced, so I felt lucky but was quite in a sad mood after being deceived. Burned the DLG 5.04f DataLifeGuard CD from WD to check the drive. All tests passed, to my surprise! Installed an Ubuntu on the same drive i386 flavour. Drive still in IDE mode, exactly the same behavior. So the OS does not matter. What I did not try yet: http://www.gigabyte.eu/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3263 I have a F2 BIOS and there is a F3a Beta, did someone have similar issues that were solved by this update? It is a beta so I fear upgrading a bit and I could find no release notes at all on the net, not really serious work maybe they had issues translating from Chinese??? Using another HDD drive Does someone have other hints or a similar issue? Maybe it is neither the HDD nor the Mainboard/BIOS?

• Cannot 301 redirect with IIS URL Rewrite Module

  I am trying to troubleshoot my issue with the URL Rewrite Module on IIS 7. I migrated a Wordpress blog over to BlogEngine.net. There were only about 5 entries that I wanted to use 301 redirects to the new blog, so I wanted to simply create 5 exact match redirect rules using the rewrite module. For some reason the exact match rule never seems to take effect, I always get a 404 error when the original url is navigated to. I verified that my exact match pattern matched the existing backlinks and it does. I then tried a simple test and got the same behavior, no redirection. I created a page, test.html, on my site, I then created a second page, test2.html. So my exact match pattern is: "http://www.mydomain.com/test.html" And the rule is supposed to do a 301 redirect to "http://www.mydomain.com/test2.html " The redirect never happens. I created the steps for the rule based on the instructions in this page: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/461/creating-rewrite-rules-for-the-url-rewrite-module/ I don't see that I left out a step. After I apply the rule I've even gone as far as doing an IISReset to make sure it would be in effect but still no luck. Any thoughts on what I might have left out? (Note: my rewrite rules dont include the " " around them but I had to add since serverfault thinks I am trying to spam the system with multiple urls.)

• How do you setup FTP with IIS Manager Users in an NLB environment with shared IIS configs?

  I've setup a 2 node NLB cluster and used the following to share IIS configs between them. http://blogs.technet.com/b/meamcs/archive/2012/05/30/configuring-iis-7-5-shared-configuration.aspx The IIS configs and content is located on a network share via a UNC path. This works - updating IIS settings on one node, is visible in another node and my website works on the individual nodes and the cluster as whole. I'm able to setup an FTP site and successfully connect with my Windows login. However, I want to use IIS Manager Authentication as defined in: http://www.iis.net/learn/publish/using-the-ftp-service/configure-ftp-with-iis-manager-authentication-in-iis-7 I've tried using "Network Service" with the FTP COM object as well as a dedicated user account that exists on all three hosts, but every time I try to login with an IIS user I get something like the following: IISWMSVC_AUTHENTICATION_UNABLE_TO_READ_CONFIG An unexpected error occurred while retrieving the authentication information. • Strange IIS hits originating from Trend Micro

  I'm trying to trace thru an error on a extranet site I maintain. I've had a look thru the logs, and I'm seeing hits originate from these IP addresses: 216.104.15.130 216.104.15.138 216.104.15.142 216.104.15.13 150.70.84.49 150.70.84.44 Network-tools.com gives 'TREND MICRO INCORPORATED' as the owner of all these IPs. The hits fail as they aren't sending any cookies (therefore aren't considered logged in). The hits are to pages containing URLs that only the logged in user would see, i.e. ImageEdit.aspx?ImageId=467424. I.e. the server isn't guessing these URLs, someone would have to log into the site to know these URLs exist. Theory: the Trend Antivirus client grabs URLs and sends them to the server for 'extra processing'? Googling around gives me this: http://www.forumpostersunion.com/showthread.php?p=51272 - where people are reporting comment spam from these addresses. The articles says their servers have been hacked (a few months ago, presumably fixed now?). A hacked server wouldn't explain how the URLs have been plucked off the user's PCs. Has anyone seen this before? Anything nefarious going on here?

• IIS FTP 7.5 Data Channel Problem (SSL)

  Hey there I wonder if anyone can get me in the right direction. I am setting up both a FTPS Client and Server, FTPS Server using Microsoft’s iis FTP 7.5. On the client side it will be running on Linux and I am using M2crypto for the openssl wrapping (python). I am worried the problem is on the server side (iis7.5) due to the following discovery : If I host using Filezilla with BOTH the control and data channel being forced to be encrypted it works 100% (100% file transmission), if i use iis as the server everything works up to the point when the data channel takes over... i.e. all data of the retrieved file is already received correctly in my basket! The ftp server just won't send the final '226 Transfer complete.' on the cmd socket. Why? If i force the client or server to close the connection the file is 100% intact....If i use iis 7.5 with forced encryption on control channel all works 100% as long as i don’t force data channel... Here are some screenshots to demo this...   We have performed following steps as of now- Install TFS2010 10.0.30319.1 (RTM) on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(app tier) SQL 2008 SP1 with Cumulative update 2 on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise(data tier) Reporting Service is installed on app tier. After this installation worked fine we installed SharePoint 2010 on app tier. After installation we followed http://blogs.msdn.com/b/team_foundation/archive/2010/03/06/configuring-sharepoint-server-2010-beta-for-dashboard-compatibility-with-tfs-2010-beta2-rc.aspx for configuration. We are not able to perform the last step described in the link as following error occured- TF249063: The following Web service is not available: http://apptier:31254/_vti_bin/TeamFoundationIntegrationService.asmx. This Web service is used for the Team Foundation Server Extensions for SharePoint Products. The underlying error is: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found.. Verify that the following URL points to a valid SharePoint Web application and that the application is available: http://apptier:31254. If the URL is correct and the Web application is operating normally, verify that a firewall is not blocking access to the Web application. We have also noticed that Document Folder in Team project also have red x. Please help. Thanks upfront.

• Adding new SPNs to existing service ids

  We have a tomcat server using spring-security kerberos to authenticate users to the webpage against active directory. There are around 25 domain controllers. The site has two CNAME based DNS aliases. The site currently has one Service ID with SPNs registered for the DNS A record as well as each of the CNAMEs. While everything is working right now, I don't know how to reliably change this configuration without possible downtime. The reason is that clients cache kerberos tickets: http://www.juniper.net/techpubs/en_US/uac4.2/topics/concept/user-role-active-directory-about.html The 'kerbtray.exe' program is helpful for viewing and deleting Kerberos tickets on the endpoint. Old tickets must be purged from the endpoint if SPNs are updated or passwords are changed (assuming the endpoint still has a cached copy of the ticket from a prior SPNEGO request to the MAG Series device. During testing, you should purge tickets before each authentication request. Description of "klist" program used to inspect/delete cached tickets: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh134826.aspx So if each of the clients (users running windows) who connect to my web server have kerberos tickets that become invalid as soon as I update the SPNs or passwords, how do I ensure changes are seamless? Are there any operations that can be done safely? I can't just ask all of the users to install klist and delete their old tickets.

  I installed new boxes at the beginning of the week. 1) Web Server on Win2008 x64, IIS 7 + all updates 2) DB Server on Win2008 x64, SQL 2008 Ent + all updates I configured my websites, set up host headers and DNS entries, worked through some problems on my handlers and finally got it all running Wednesday morning. Our team has been using it since then. This morning I came in and everyone of us is getting a 500 error. • Macbook Pro - 15" with i7 processor - Any problems with heat?

  You may have already heard about the review done by the folks at PC Authority in Australia, where they had an i7 MacBook Pro that got up to 100 degrees Celsius during benchmarking. Having read how hot the computer got I started to become hesitant about purchasing. My main concern is long term damage to the computer due to excessive heat. I plan to use the MacBook Pro as a development machine where I will be running Windows 7 within VMWare Fusion or Virtual Box. Within the VM I will be running IIS, SQL Server, Visual Studio and SharePoint Server. Hence why I would like to have the power of the i7 processor. That is why I wanted to check with actually owners of the MacBooks with the i7 processor and see what their experiences have been. Have you noticed excessive heat? How does your Macbook handle process intensive apps over long periods of time? Thank you!

  I'm walking through the following step-by-step guide for deploying Windows 7 via AIK: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28WS.10%29.aspx On step 4 (Capturing the Installation onto a Network Share), I run into a bit of a snag: attempting to connect to a network drive repeatedly fails. I'm using/deploying Dell Optiplex 380 64 bit machines, and the network cards seem to be really wonky. On the machine that I'm using to run AIK etc, the network driver wasn't found automatically. I had to manually go in and install the driver (which was found on the OEM installation media). I've since copied this to the USB key that I'm using for the Autounattend.xml so its handy. I think that because of this, the PE environment doesn't or can't instantiate the network device. Is there a way to install/configure the network device through the command prompt in PE? If not, I read about adding in the answer file path(s) to drivers, but if I did it this way, would I have to start the process all over again (i.e. create new Autounattend.xml with the PnPcustomizations path included, re-run the installation on the reference machine, install all the applications, re-make the PE iso, reboot into new PE iso)? Any shortcuts, direction, or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  [Running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit] My new HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t has been plagued by BSDO crashes since I got it about 5 weeks ago. The crashes are somewhat rare, sometimes not occurring for 3 or 4 days. • Keep Windows Installer from using largest drive for temporary files

  By default Windows Installer uses the largest drive for temporary storage, no matter if that's needed (meaning there would also be enough space on the system drive). Taken from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa371372%28VS.85%29.aspx: During an administrative installation the installer sets ROOTDRIVE to the first connected network drive it finds that can be written to. If it is not an administrative installation, or if the installer can find no network drives, the installer sets ROOTDRIVE to the local drive that can be written to having the most free space. Now my system drive is an SSD, my largest drive is a RAID, that spins down when it's not used. Remember the SSD as system drive? Everything is silent now! Until I install something and Windows Installer wakes up my RAID again just to put a small .tmp file on it... How can I prevent Windows Installer from using the largest drive as temporary storage? Can I maybe set some access rights to disallow the Windows Installer to write on my RAID drive? Any other ideas? Thank you!

  Ok this is somenthing unbelievable, we have a website, users sign up and receives links to confirm they signed up BUT: 1 - microsoft blocked our IP (no one with microsoft email account can receive our emails) 2 - we tryed contacting microsoft submitting the detailed form about our problem 3 - we posted 3 times in their community about our problem 4 - we tweeted they about our problem 5 - we tryed finding out some telephone support number (the few there are arent' helping at all) Do you think we solved? the answer is NO :/ We still unable to send emails from our IP to microsoft email accounts, since 3 months back. Our emails are perfect we checked all the email headers following microsoft guidelines but it seems not enought, checking our IP reputation it seems everythings ok, indeed we can send email easly to any other provider , gmail, yahoo, etc Do you know any other way to try to get help ? • Monitoring multiple sites on a single server using OpsView

  We have several web servers. On each of these servers there can be ~250 web sites. I need to add a HTTP check for each site on each server. Each site has a reserved host header that we know can always be resolved in the format of: w10000.hostchecks.mycompany.com w10020.hostchecks.mycompany.com w11992.hostchecks.mycompany.com ..and so on.. What I want is for there to be a master ping check on the web server's main IP address and then separate HTTP checks for each of the sites on the server. If the master ping test fails then I want the HTTP tests to cease until the master ping check goes OK. I had a stab at this and tried do the following: Create a parent host that does a ping check on the server's main ip address (e.g. server is named WEB0001). Am I going about this completely the wrong way?

• How to add a privilege to an account in Windows?

  Given: A VM running Windows 2008 I am logged on there using my domain account (SHUNRANET\markk) I have added the "Create global objects" privilege to my domain account: The VM is restarted (I know logout/logon is enough, but I had to restart) I logon again using the same domain account. It seems still to have the privilege: I run some process and examine its Security properties using the Process Explorer. The account does not seem to have the privilege: This is not an idle curiousity. I have a real problem, that without this privilege the named pipe WCF binding works neither on Windows 2008 nor on Windows 7! EDIT BTW, when I run the process elevated, everything is fine and the process explorer does display the privilege as expected: But I do not want to run it elevated. I am yet to determine the relevance of it, but it looks promising.   [PROBLEM] Hello everyone. I have a small issue here. We are trying to get our exchange accounts for students only ported over from an exchange server 2003 to the Microsoft cloud services known as live @ EDU. The problem we are having is that in order to do this we need to install 2 pieces of software 1: OLSync 2: Microsoft Identity Life cycle Manager "Download the Galsync.msi here" the "Here" link takes you to a page that needs a login for an admin account for live @ EDU. That part works. However once logged in it redirects to a page that states: https://connect.microsoft.com/site185/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=26407 Page Not Found The content that you requested cannot be found or you do not have permission to view it. If you believe you have reached this page in error, click the Help link at the top of the page to report the issue and include this ID in your e-mail: afa16bf4-3df0-437c-893a-8005f978c96c [WHAT I NEED] I need to download that file. Does anyone know of an alternative location for that installation file? I also need to obtain Identity Lifecycle Management (ILM) Server 2007, Feature Pack 1 (FP1). If anyone has any helpful information that would be fantastic! As well if anyone has completed a migration of account from a on site exchange 2003 server to the Microsoft Live @ EDU servers any general guidance would be helpful! Thanks in advance.

• Exchange 2010 DAG + VMWare HA = no support?

  We currently have an Exchange 2003 clustered environment (two machine cluster) that we're looking to upgrade to 2010. We recently purchased a VMWare virtualization environment (three Dell R710's with an EMC NS-120 serving up NFS datastores - iSCSI is available) that we wish to use for this new environment. I'm seeing that Microsoft does not support Exchange 2010 DAGs with a virtualization high availability solution (see links below). I would like to utilize the DAG to ensure the data stays available if one host goes down, and HA to ensure that if the physical host goes down, the VM will come back up on the other available host. Does anybody know why MS does not support this? VMWare HA will only restart the VM if it is hung/down - I don't see any difference between this and restarting the physical box if someone pulled the power... Will we only run into issues with support if it has something to do with HA/DAG failover or will they see we have HA and tell us to put it on a physical box even if it has nothing to do with HA? If we disable HA for these VM's will that satisfy them on a support case? Has anybody set up an Exchange 2010 DAG on VMware with HA enabled? Will they have any issues with using an NFS datastore? We have much greater flexibility on the EMC with NFS vs iSCSI, so I would prefer to continue utilizing that. • How to remove Character Style in Word 2003

  I am copying text into a Word document that has its styles protected. Some of the text has a Character style applied to it that I would like to remove. I can change the style and it looks okay visually, but when you click inside the text itself you can see in the style menu that the Character style is still applied. I try to change the style using the style drop down but the Character style won't go away even if I change it to the Paragraph style. Does anyone know what I am talking about and/or have any techniques for removing Character styles? I am looking forward to your responses. Let me know if I need to clarify. Thanks! UPDATE: My issue is that the Paragraph style is changing correctly, but the Character style remains applied even though the text is displayed as if the style is not applied. There are four types of styles — paragraph, character, list, and table (list and table styles are new as of Word 2002). However, the majority of styles you'll use are paragraph styles.

• .NET not processing an XML file in IIS

  We have 2 servers, 1 already configured with .net which works fine and a new one which appears to be configured the same but when I open an xml page in Internet Explorer it complains about the <% tag. We have IIS on win srvr 2003 SP2. The website is configured with .NET 1.1.4322. In ISAPI extensions have set the .XML extension to use c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll But the page: <property name="documentmaxage" value="0"/> <property name="documentmaxstale" value="0"/> <var name="m_Prompt_Path" /> <form id="InitVoiceXmlDoc"> <block> <assign name="m_Prompt_Path" expr="&quot;<% Response.Write(Request.QueryString["m_Prompt_Path"]); %>&quot;"/> </block> </form> gives the error: The XML page cannot be displayed Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later. The character '<' cannot be used in an attribute value. Error processing resource 'http://localhost:11119/fails.xml'. Lin... &quo... We have the same config on another server which works fine. So are there other options apart from the ISAPI extensions that I need to look at. If I suffix the page .aspx, of course it works fine.

• How Can I Make Apache Stop Serving ALL Unknown File Types (like .php~)?

  I am coming from IIS and moving to Apache and recently found out that Apache by default serves up files of an unknown file extension as PURE TEXT. This can be an issue if a user uses certain programs that back up .php files as .php~. Then the .php~ file becomes completely readable by simply navigating to it in a browser. To make matters worse these .php~ files are often considered 'hidden' in the linux environment from the user so some may not even know they exist. Bots have been created around this fact that scour the internet looking for popular file name backups and extracting potentially secure info from them. I already know how to stop serving up .php~ files or any specific file extensions. I also know not to use any editors that would save backup files like this. My question is, how can I stop this default Apache behavior of serving up ANY non-MIME file type at all? I just don't like the this behavior and would like to stop it. I don't want it serving up .aspx~, .html~, .bob, .carl, no extension or anything else that is not a real MIME type. I know that I can probably go and use a directive to first Deny access to all file types. Then add the ones I want to serve out one by one. But I'm wondering if there's an easier/quicker way. • Does a mini PCIe SSD fit into a Acer Aspire One?

  Question: What, if any, mini PCIe SSDs fit into the mini PCIe slot of the Acer Aspire one AOD250? Info: I have an Aspire One and I've been considering loading it with an SSD. The mini PCIe drives fascinate me and so I want to try that approach. Also they tend to be cheaper and not much slower. (at least not on Read time which matters more for a netbook) But I've heard that some times computers don't support certain mini PCIe cards. And I was wondering if anyone knew about the Aspire One? I tried asking Acer tech support, but they didn't know jack and spent the whole time informing that I would have to support my Ubuntu install on my own, which I was. Anyway. Rant Aside, I'm looking at this drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820183252 It states it is exclusively for the Eee PC. now does that mean It was designed for the Eee PC but will work in my netbook. or is something going to go wrong?
