How do I accurately observe and measure the amount of virtual memory utilization and activity on Linux? I know there is vmstat, but how do I interpret the results? Or, what is better?
No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify"
The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail.
I did some googling, and the consensus as:
1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior
2- This problem is likely not fixable.
My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.
What software do you guys recommend for 2D animation, cartoon like, on the Mac.
Please suggest something that do not requires a PhD in astrophysics to be able to use. If free, better.
thanks
I've been bumping my head against Droid's inability to record phone calls hoping against hope that things would improve after the update. Is there any indication that phone recording will work better under 2.1?
Any place that explains why Droids _can't record the phone audio stream? Hardware or OS?
thx
We're finally rolling out Server 2008 systems and our old IIS6 check looked for IIS.exe, which doesn't appear to be used anymore. Is there a better process name to look for?
We already have network availability checks in place, but having multiple forms of checks like this helps diagnose where not to look.
I am somewhat confused what the differences between a softlink, and a hardlink are (on unix).
It seems like a softlink is the same as a shortcut in windows or an alias on Mac OS X. (Can someone confirm this?) Softlinks can link to both directories and files.
I am uncertain of what a hardlink does or if it is useful..
Is it better to use one instead of the other?
Thanks.
I'm not talking about a full-weight and size editor. I'm talking about something better than Notepad and faster to load and less bloated than Visual Studio.
Minimum requirements would be syntax highlighting.
I'm planning to buy a NAS (network attached storage) box and I've picked the Synology DS209. I want to set up a RAID 1 array and I'm wondering if I should buy a matching pair of hard drives or if it would be better to buy from different manufacturers. I'm concerned that a matching pair would be more likely to fail at the same time.
I am no longer using the trackpad on my macbook and using a separate wired apple keyboard instead. I miss the scrolling functionality on my trackpad, I'm having to make do with the keyboard (the mouse is too far away for efficient scrolling).
Is there a way to map a key combination (such as cmd+pagedown) such that I scroll up/down half a page instead of a full page?
Even better, is there a way to map key combinations to arbitrary scrolling distances?
Thanks for your time
on windows there are several key maps applications that replaces Caps lock with ESC on a single 'press and relase' and with a Control signal if hold and another key is pressed.
Is there any way to do something similar on linux? Ideally on the whole system, but if it is only for X window it is fine too.
i'm currently writting scripts with the xautomation package tools. but i guess there is already a better way to do that via configurations.
Hello,
I'm looking for a nice way to add / remote ips (and possibly interact with an asset inventory system to track where ips are), start / stop processes, download logs, and all around genearal system admin duties from one place.
It's okay if I require more than 1 program. That would still be better than having 50 million terminals open and trying to trace ip assignments etc on whiteboards.
I'd also like to know if anyone knows any good asset management programs.
Best Regards,
William
Hi,
I don't like asking "OR" questions, but I can't find any comparison on the Internet. I need live http streaming using h264 in flv container.
I managed to achieve this with VLC, but with big latency. I have some problems with ffmpeg and I can not make it to work, but I wonder if would it works better then VLC?
I need software that will rip a site via HTTP. It needs to download the images, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as well as organize it in a file system.
Does anyone know of software that does this? Or would I be better off just writing it myself?
Can anyone tell me how to clear the cache in the Mail application on Snow Leopard?
I noticed that it was automatically backing up my gmail messages so it ended up caching 11GB of emails even though that's more than my account.
The only solution I seem to be able to find is to delete the files in /Users/me/Library/Mail/MyGmailAccount
Is this the best solution or is there a better way?
Hello guys, I want to record voice using the built-in Microphone of my laptop, the OS is Windows 7. The built-in recorder of Windows could only record into wav format, and I want to record in mp3 or other compact format for a long time -- around 10 hours. Record only voice is fine.
Any recommendations? Better free software and easy to use.
Thanks in advance!
For monitoring and graphing of servers and services, I would like to make a setup where collectd is the agent, collecting the data on the server, and munin is on the monitoring server, collecting the data from the agents an process it.
Reasons for this setup, is that collectd had a smaller footprint on the servers and munin (v2) has a better frontend.
I was wondering if there's an interface for this connection, or if someone has an opinion about why I shouldn't do this.
This link says the HP Proliant DL 180 G5 server only supports Smart Array E200, E500, P400 and P800 controllers.
Can I use a Smart Array P410 instead?
Currently the server has only the default internal controller, I need an additional one for better performance and to support additional drives (the default controller only supports 4, with a Smart Array controller all 8 bays can be used). The disks are SATA ones.
I have tried google notebook & evernote free version for notetaking.
I found google notebook has very few features whereas evernote free version is consuming too much memory and sometimes responding very slowly.
Can you folks please suggest if there is any better notetaking tool out there?
Thanks,
Srikanth
I have a few images that have been anti-aliased onto a white background that I want to put on a transparent background. Just selecting it with the -wand tool/fuzzy select tool/select your terminology of choice- and deleting the background tends to leave a ring of off-white pixels around the image, or eat into the image depending on the tolerance setting. Is there some better way to do this, preferably an automatic tool? (I'm on Linux)
what is the difference between Android Dev Phone and other phones on market like g1,nexus,hero,etc? which one isbetter to buy for the devloper? review it features plz.
How I can easily apply a template to an existing OO Calc file?
AFAIK it is possible only to make a new file from a template, copy the sheets in it, and save/overwrite the old file. But I don't like this way; there is a easier/better way to do this? Like a macro, or something like that.
I just need to repeatedly apply page margins to my sheet.
I have some presentations that are filmed. The audio is the presenter and the video is all the Powerpoint slides (size 1024x768, video codec H264, audio codec AAC).
I would like to reduce their final file size since a 1 hour presentation is about 800 MB. Most of it is the video part which as I said is mostly powerpoint slides that don't change much over a matter of several seconds.
Which codec would be better suited to encode this images and reduce the size of the end file?
I will be running a dynamic web site and if the server ever is to stop responding, I'd like to failover to a static website that displays a "We are down for maintenance" page. I have been reading and I found that switching the DNS dynamically may be an option, but how quick will that change take place? And will everyone see the change immediately? Are there any better ways to failover to another server?
