• What is appropriate for creating a booking system?

  I need a booking system for a theoretical project website. It would be an in-house job (not outsourcing to a web service) but all google searches on the subject yield results for said web services. I'd want to be able to use the system as such: For each day, there is availability recorded and if available a user can book in using the website, which sets that date to unavailable. There are other complexities, but this is the basic system I am trying to achieve - what would allow me to implement something like this?

• How can IIS 7.5 have the error pages for a site reset to the default configuration?

  A mishap occurred with web.config to accommodate a subsite existing. I made use of “<location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false">”. Essentially it was a workaround put in place for nested web.config files which was causing a conflict. The result was that error pages were not being handled properly. Error 500 was being passed to the client for every type of error encountered. Removal of the offending inheritInChildApplications tag from the root web.config restored normal operations of most of the error handling, but for some reason error 503 is a correct response header, but the IIS server is performing the custom actions for error 403.4 which is a redirect to https. I'm looking to restore defaults for error pages so that the behavior once again is restored. I then can re-add customizations for the error pages.

• Embeding a generic google search with autocomplete - not a custom site search

  Most people's home page is google.com. My homepage is just a custom html page hosted on my computer. I do this because I am a web developer, and I have several projects that I work on a one time, so I like to have quick links to all of them. On that page I usually just have a Link to google.com for when I want to search. But below all of my quick links, I want to add a google search box (with Autocompletions). I first used a simple iframe to embed google.com into the page, but then my search results were confined to that iframe. I wanted to search for something, then my results would open in a new tab. I then came across this code snippet but it doesn't have Autocompletions: http://www.refactory.org/s/google_search/view/2 How can I add Autocompletions to this? Or is there a better way of doing it? • command-line zip not working

  I have a Wordpress site on a Debian/Linux dedicated server, with a Backupbuddy plugin for making automatic backups. The plugin, however, gives an error 'Your server does not support command line ZIP'. My knowledge of Linux commands is very limited, but I managed installing zip with the command sudo apt-get install zip However, I still get the same error message. Plugin documentation mentions the problem could also be caused by disabled exec() or safe_mode - but exec isn't disabled, and safe_mode is off. Any ideas what might be causing this, or how to fix it? The only thing I could think of, is it might be caused by wrong permissions?

• Google Analytics: How can I traffic and referrals from iPad applications?

  In Google Analytics, there is extensive information on the mobile device, version and browser version. However, this doesn't seem to go beyond the mobile browser. I would like to determine which application is responsible for visits to my site. Specifically, I want to know how many visits are coming from zite. http://www.handsetdetection.com/properties/vendormodel/Apple/iPad/page:4 seems to indicate this information is probably available, where/does Google Analytics expose this?

  It's been two month I've launched a website. I recently ran into some websites which list directory of other websites. Some examples can be http://www.addgoogleurl.com/ and webdirectorieslist.com, etc. I was talking with my colleague and he says, adding the URL of my website to these kind of websites will negate the effect of other organic real links. Does google consider positive/negative points for these kind of links from web directory websites? Do you have any source for your answer to refer to?   I am starting an eCommerce marketplace, I am new to eCommerce, but I am taking it up as a challenge. I will have multiple vendors on my site. and they will upload their products through csv.- for bulk upload however there will be certain popular products already listed in the database, they can add those to their listing(like amazon for 3rd party sellers). • Still prompted for a password after adding SSH public key to a server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?   I have a few ideas that I think would be pretty game changing for online advertising and I would like to build my own network but I don't know where to start. I know it will take a lot of time for major publishers to get on board but I am more curious about the technical side. What language/database model and framework are modern ad networks built on? Basically I want to build an advertising network that registers views per page and allows publishers to manage the look of their own ads and let's the users interact with the ads. Is there any good information on doing something like this or any framework you can suggest to build on? I know this would get complicated pretty fast so if you have suggestions for ad networks that let you customize them heavily I would be glad to hear your suggestions.

• Is there any way to prevent Googlebar from breaking Friendly 404s

  This might be considered a continuation of this question. If I output HTML after my 404 header, It displays properly in IE and FF unless the user has Google bar instaled. If I try header('HTTP/1.x 404 Not Found'); header("Location: http://www.example.com/?content=404_error"); die(); then I'm getting 302 from the redirect. It seems to overrule the 404 Supposedly if your output is larger than 512 bytes, the toolbar isn't supposed to override the page, but It seems to do it anyway. I found a setting in Google's Toolbar that said "Provide suggestions on navigation errors". Turning that off provides me with the behaviour I want my visitors to experience. Does anyone know if Google provides a way for a developer to over-ride that setting for all visitors?

  We're currently hosting a number of sites on a self-managed dedicated server. Some companies, however, offer a managed dedicated server hosting service. They offer: Roughly the same server spec Ticketing system support Managed daily backups Virtual firewall (but with a limit of 10 IP addresses allowed through at any one time) Now, this managed hosting is at extra expense - somewhere in the region of $500 per month, and the limit on the number of IP addresses they'll manage on the firewall is also a real pain. My thinking is it would be better and cheaper to Stay with the same host since the dedicated box is fine Get an Amazon AWS account and use their server to manage backups; there are a number of good tools that can be used to automate the process Configure iptables so that I have complete control of the firewall I want to know Is a managed virtual firewall likely to be more secure than me configuring iptables? Whether, in your opinion, it's best to let someone else take care of backups? If, from your experience, there's anything else i'm missing that warrants using managed hosting over a DIY service? I think there is some reluctance to not having managed hosting since a managed host in effect takes responsibility for your server, whereas any hardware or security issues with a server that we manage would mean we are forced to hold our hands up when a client site goes down. That said, I personally don't think a managed host does that much in the day to day running of your server (backups are automatic, OS updates are carried out with ease, etc.).

• Tracking a goal through a virtual pageview is not registering

  I am trying to track a goal in Google Analytics through a virtual pageview. As you can see in the code example, it is linking out from a picture instead of text with a link. I triple-checked to see if I had my Goals set up properly in the Admin panel, where the goal URL is set to "/click2", the goal type is URL destination and the match type is Head Match. I am unsure if the problem lies in the fact that it's linking out to an "https" link or if the link is attached to a picture that serves as a Call To Action. I would appreciate if any of you can help shed some light on this problem I'm having.

• Should users be deleted after inactivity on a website?

  When you have a social website or a website where you can register, would you eventually delete them after a certain time (after a year of inactivity) or would you rather keep their account records for ever? I know websites like Facebook have large amount of inactive, duplicated and fake accounts. So I'm wondering if after two years of inactivity it would be alright to send the account a warning email of deletion unless they log in. Just thinking of a clean and efficient database management or any implications this may cause to new potential users.

• My Sites Were Hacked. What To Do?

  I host multiple domains with this very popular hosting provider and I just went into one of my sites and... I see a black page with message "Hacked by...". I checked and all my sites with the provider are showing this same page. Inside of file system I have seen the hacker placed all default.* and index.* files with this message. So the hacker overwrote all index pages, placed new pages and that is under every, I say again, every folder. Cleaning this up will be close to a most horrible job. What to do (right now I am awaiting the restore of files from hosting provider)? How to prevent this? Whom to blame?

• YouTube custom thumbnails feature availability

  I've been trying to figure out this on my own for weeks, but now I give up. 'Custom thumbnails' feature on YouTube is such a controversial one, it was changed so much... so much that even FAQ on YouTube doesn't fully describe it's features (as I see). I have a YouTube channel for one of my websites. This YouTube channel is main marketing force for my website - it brings all the boys to my yard (I mean, website). So I have to use all the hacky-tricky stuff to increase my visibility on youtube. And damn, those custom thumbnails are giving me hard times... As far as I understand, this is current state of 'custom thumbnail' feature: "If your account is in good standing, you may have the ability to upload custom thumbnails for your video uploads."   Im building a portfolio website that uses full screen background images slideshow that are cropped to fit using a js plugin. To give the minimum amount of cropping whats the best ratio to make the images ? ie i know 13" macbooks are around 13:7 (when taking into account about 100px for the browser bar) but does that scale up on 15",24",17" displays ? I know there are charts showing the most common dimensions but they just show a range of sizes and thats categorized by groups rather than actual dimensions

  I've a problem that I can't find the solution for on the web. I have a blog that has PR 1 and it's subdomain "aaaa.domain.com" that "domain.com" is a blog server. Now I want buy a domain "newdomain.com" and I want tell google webmaster to redirect the old subdomain to this new domain and send traffic to my new domain. I can't access .htaccess to use a 301 redirect. The only thing that I can do is put html code in the html. How can I do this? When I use "Change of Address" in google webmaster it say:"Restricted to root level domains only".

  Say I have to have terms of use on site, a place the text as marked up html. Where it is better to prepare this document initially if it is going to placed to the web? Considering that such documents are prepared and changed by lawyers, it is not very applicable for them to use text editor. And it is not very efficient to manually process content to prepare it for the web as it is changed. For now my solution is: Prepare document text in google docs keeping some simple structure (title, ordered lit of features, simple paragraphs), save as html (it will contain some unnecessary markup) and then use custom conversion tool (some script) to convert saved html from google docs to simple html and inject new version to the site. What is common practiceses for this problem? What is the workflow of preparing and publishing such documents.

• Any reason not to buy SSL certificates from a reseller?

  Is there any reason to buy an SSL certificate directly from the host (for $49, for example), instead of through a well-known reseller, for only $10.95? Specifically in my case, I just need to encrypt user data as they fill out forms. Nothing too critical, only usernames and passwords. I don't think my users actually care about the brand name or "trust" level behind the certificate, I'm just looking out for them.
