  • Determining which database instance makes biggest IO

    Assuming that I have a dedicated server on which I am running multiple instances of mysql and postresql servers. How without iotop determine which instance in particular time (proc/pid/io shows data collected in some peroid of time) makes the biggest IO (so it increases IOWAIT)? When lots of ppl do something on DB then I clearly see which instance is making the load because of high cpu usage, but I had a situation when the cpu usage was just normal, but very high iowait made a huge load on server and i had problem finding process that was making some outstanding IO

  • Storing And Using Microsoft User Account Credentials in SQL Server 2008 database

    I'm not exactly positive how to word this for the sake of the title so please forgive me. Also I can't seem to figure out how to even google this question, so I'm hoping that I can get a lead in the right direction. Part of my software(VB.NET App) requires the ability to access/read/write a shared network folder. I have an option for the user to specify any credentials that might be needed to access said folder. I want to store these credentials given in the SQL Server database as part of the config (I have a table which contains configuration). My concern is that the password for the user account will be unencrpyted. Yet, if I encrypt the password the VB.NET App And/Or database will be unable to use the credentials for file i/o operations unless the Password is unencrypted before use. I'm fishing for suggestions on how to better handle this situation.

    Hi. I got a part on my page I want to improve. It's a file upload that users can add their contacts from files like excel, csv & outlook. I read the contacts and place them in the database, so what I would like to do is to have a regular icon that spins while that operation is doing that, how could I do that? Ajax? I don't want progress bar for the file upload but the operation for reading the file EDIT: I want to know how to make this work with the add to database using ajax. like should I use a updatepanel?     Hi, I would like to know the best way to populate an object that has a collection of child objects and each child object may inturn have a collection of objects, from database without making multiple calls to the database to get child objects for each object. basically in hierarchical format something like for example a customer has orders and each order has order items. is it best to retrieve the data in xml format (SQL server 2005), or retrieve a dataset by joining the related tables together and then map that the data to the object? thanks in advance for your help.

  • Using SQL Server profiler from 2008 against R2 database

    On my dev machine I have the management studio tools installed from SQL Server 2008. However, one of the sql server boxes I need to profile against is running R2. Because of this, when I start the profiler and connect to that server all of the templates are gone. If I go to Edit the templates, the R2 server type isn't available as an option. Do I have to upgrade my local toolset to R2 or is there some other way around this? Note, that if I create a template and save it the next time I connect to the server that saved template isn't available.

    I'm designing the server structure for my application in case things go well. I have one server DB connected to multiple server who process connections. All those with lots of RAM and fast processors. (still looking for a way to use the multithread because now it's dumb apache php... so loooots of ram needed). Upon an answer from those servers, the client can then connect to another server to retrieve pictures using the address he previously got from the db. Is it a good idea to have one database server with let's say nginx and ssd disk having to send all pictures to everybody? or should I have multiple server accessing to a shared ssd disk drive or multiple disk updating each other? Also should I put a lot of RAM on the database server? because probably there wont be a picture more popular than another.

    Hello! I have a question about storing an image in a database. I know this topic has been discussed before, however I feel that in my case this is actually a good idea - the images will be small (none should be as large as 1MB) and there shouldn't be too many. I like the idea of not worrying about IO permissions etc. Anyway I have a problem when storing the image (byte[]) to the database type image. Here is my code: OleDbCommand comm = new OleDbCommand(strSql, Program.GetConnection()); comm.Parameters.Add("?", SqlDbType.Image).Value = bytearr; comm.ExecuteNonQuery(); Everything compiles fine, however when I run it, the code only saves the value 63 (0x3F) into the field - no matter which image I am trying to save. What could be the problem? Thank you for your help.

  • Backing up data (including mysqldumps) to S3

    We have a web app on a number of servers and we want to add an additional layer of redundancy by backing up the key data to S3. The key data is the MySQL database and a folder containing dynamically created site assets - predominantly images. Some kind of rsync based solution would initially seem the best plan. A couple of years ago we played with S3cmd (in particular s3cmd sync) with some success but we didn't find it particularly reliable although this may have changed since. Its occurred to me though that a rsync solution might not work particularly well with a single db.sql file created with mysqldump and I assume this means the whole database getting transferred each time, with multiple databases of over 1GB this is going to add up to a lot of traffic (and $s) very quickly. With the image files I could simply just transfer files modified within the last day which would be far more simple. What approach should I look at?

    I have a ~300.000 row table; which includes technical terms; queried using PHP and MySQL + FULLTEXT indexes. But when I searching a wrong typed term; for example "hyperpext"; naturally giving no results. I need to "compansate" little writing errors and getting nearest record from database. How I can accomplish such feaure? I know (actually, learned today) about Levenshtein distance, Soundex and Metaphone algorithms but currently not having a solid idea to implement this to querying against database. Best regards.   • Doctrine SQL Server uniqueidentifier isn't cast as char or nvarchar when retrieved from the database

    When I retrieve a record from the database which has a column of type "uniqueidentifier", Doctrine fills it with "null" rather than the unique id from the database. Some research and testing has brought this down to a PDO/dblib driver issue. When directly querying via PDO, null is returned in place of the unique id. For reference, http://trac.doctrine-project.org/ticket/1096, has a bit on this, however, it was updated 11 months ago with no comment for resolution. A way around this, as mentioned at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=24752&edit=1, is to cast the column as a char. However, it doesn't seem Doctrine exposes the native field type outside of generating models which makes it a bit hard to detect uniqueidentifier types and cast them internally when building the sql query. Has anyone found a workaround for this?

I want to make a custom object which will contain the exact attributes as the column names, with the corresponding values. As an example, suppose that the object is X. So it will have three attributes which are X.name, X.gender and X.birthday, with the corresponding values from the records. Is it doable in PHP? If so, then how?

    I have a Jersey resource that access the database. Basically it opens a database connection in the initialization of the resource. Performs queries on the resource's methods. I have observed that when I do not use @Singleton, the database is being open at each request. And we know opening a connection is really expensive right? So my question is, should I specify that the resource be singleton or is it really better to keep it at per request especially when the resource is connecting to the database?   • Is there are standard way to store a database schema outside a python app

    I am working on a small database application in Python (currently targeting 2.5 and 2.6) using sqlite3. It would be helpful to be able to provide a series of functions that could setup the database and validate that it matches the current schema. Before I reinvent the wheel, I thought I'd look around for libraries that would provide something similar. I'd love to have something akin to RoR's migrations. xml2ddl doesn't appear to be meant as a library (although it could be used that way), and more importantly doesn't support sqlite3. I'm also worried about the need to move to Python 3 one day given the lack of recent attention to xml2ddl. Are there other tools around that people are using to handle this?

    I have noticed that when selecting options (drop down menus, radio buttons etc) on some websites you see an ever more complex URL being created and then you can use that URL to access that website at a later date and go straight to the page with your desired options. Unfortunately on other websites the URL remains fixed and you appear to have no choice but to select the options all over again. I was wondering if there was some utility that would help automate this process.

    I'm currently using jquery's ajax feature or whatever they call it. To load data from mysql database. Its working fine, but one of the built in features of this one is to load all the data which is on the database when you press on backspace and there's no character left on the text box. Here's my query: SELECT * FROM prod_table WHERE QTYHAND>0 AND PRODUCT LIKE '$prod%' OR P_DESC LIKE '$desc%' OR CATEGORY LIKE '$cat%' As you can see I only want to load the products which has greater than 0 quantity on hand. I'm using this code to communicate to the php file which has the query on it: $('#inp').keyup(function(){ var inpval=$('#inp').val(); $.ajax({ type: 'POST', data: ({p : inpval}), url: 'querys.php', success: function(data) { $('.result').html(data); } }); }); Is it possible to also filter the data that it outputs so that when I press on backspace and there's no character left. The only products that's going to display are those with greater than 0 quantity?

    Currently I am developing a CakePHP that will list various businesses. In the database, there is a table for businesses that lists them like so: id | name | address | city | state | state_id | zip | url The state column are abbreviations of states (for listing purposes) CA, AK, FL, etc and the state_id matches up with the ids in the states table: id | name | state_abbr I have an admin_add.ctp template with form helpers for inserting new businesses. For entering a state for a business I am going to have a pull down that lists all the states. However, how do I make the database insert so it will know how to add the state abbreviation and state id when I submit the form to add the business?
