• How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

  Hi, I am doing performance tweaking of a simple app that uses MVC on IIS 7.5. I have a StopWatch starting up in Application_BeginRequest and I take a snapshot at Controller.OnActionExecuting. So I measure the time spend in the entire IIS pipeline: from request receipt to the moment execution finally gets to my controller. I obtain 700 microseconds on my 3GHz quad-core (project compiled Release x64), and I wonder where the bottleneck is, especially hearing some people say that one can get up to 8000 page loads per second with MVC. How can I optimize MVC and IIS pipeline to obtain higher speed?

• I'm asked to tune a long starting app into a short time period

  Hi, I'm asked to shorten the startup period of a long starting app, however I have also to obligate to my managers to the amount of time i will reduce the startup - something like 10-20 seconds. As i'm new in my company I said I can obligate with timeframe of months (its a big server and I'm new and i plan to do lazy load + performance tuning). that answer was not accepted I was required to do some kind of a cache to hold important data in another server and then when my server starts up it would reach all its data from that cache - I find it a kind of a workaround and i don't really like it. do you like it? what do you think I should do? any suggestions? PS when i profiled the app i saw many small issues that make the startup long (like 2 minutes) it would not be a short process to fix all and to make lazy load. • .NET Web Service Proxy is adding special characters in XML

  My web service proxy seems to be adding special characters like "*" and "#" etc. within the xml nodes. My proxy created lists using arrays of objects. I am trying to create a generic list and then doing list.ToArray() to set the proxy MyProxyObject[] object. Is this the cause of the problem I am having? I plan on running fiddler on the request later but it is over SSL and I do not have access to the URL at the moment.   For performance tests I need a way to measure the time needed for a form to load its definition from the DFM. All existing forms inherit a custom form class. To capture the current time, this base class needs overriden methods as "extension points": before the beginning of the deserialization process after the completion of deserialization (can be implemented by overriding the Loaded procedure) the moment just before the execution of the OnFormCreate event Which TObject (or TComponent) methods are best suited? Maybe there are other extension points in the form creation process, please feel free to make suggestions.

  How do you deal with analysis and design phases when you plan to develop a system using a functional programming language like Haskell? My background is in imperative/object-oriented programming languages, and therefore, I am used to use case analysis and the use of UML to document the design of program. But the thing is that UML is inherently related to the object-oriented way of doing software. And I am intrigued about what would be the best way to develop documentation and define software designs for a system that is going to be developed using functional programming. Would you still use use case analysis or perhaps structured analysis and design instead? How do software architects define the high-level design of the system so that developers follow it? What do you show to you clients or to new developers when you are supposed to present a design of the solution? How do you document a picture of the whole thing without having first to write it all? Is there anything comparable to UML in the functional world?

• Prevent PHP sesison hijack, are these good ideas?

  I'm doing a simple shopping cart for a small site. I plan to store cart items as well as logged in user_id in session variables. to make things a little more secure, I thought I'd do this: sha1() the user_id before storing it in the session. Also sha1() and store the http_user_agent var with some salt, and check this along with the user_id. I know there is more one can do, but I thought this at least helps quite a bit right? and is easy for me to implement.

  Hello A client of mine has had an HD crash an a SQL DB got corrupt : They did not make backups so they have a big problem. When I tried (an ultimate measure) to DBCC-repair I got the following message. Can anybody help me with this ? Server: Msg 8966, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Could not read and latch page (1:872) with latch type SH. sysindexes failed. Server: Msg 8944, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Table error: Object ID 2, index ID 0, page (1:872), row 11. Test (columnOffsets->IsComplex (varColumnNumber) && (ColumnId == COLID_HYDRA_TEXTPTR || ColumnId == COLID_INROW_ROOT || ColumnId == COLID_BACKPTR)) failed. Values are 2 and 5. The repair level on the DBCC statement caused this repair to be bypassed. CHECKTABLE found 0 allocation errors and 1 consistency errors in table 'sysindexes' (object ID 2). DBCC execution completed. If DBCC printed error messages, contact your system administrator.

• [PHP] - Lowering script memory usage in a "big" file creation

  Hi there people, it looks like I'm facing a typical memory outage problem when using a PHP script. The script, originally developed by another person, serves as an XML sitemap creator, and on large websites uses quite a lot of memory. I thought that the problem was related due to an algorithm holding data in memory until the job was done, but digging into the code I have discovered that the script works in this way: open file in output (will contain XML sitemap entries) in the loop: ---- for each entry to be added in sitemap, do fwrite close file end Although there are no huge arrays or variables being kept in memory, this technique uses a lot of memory. I thought that maybe PHP was buffering under the hood the fwrites and "flushing" data at the end of the script, so I have modified the code to close and open the file every Nth record, but the memory usage is still the same.... I'm debugging the script on my computer and watching memory usage: while script execution runs, memory allocation grows. Is there a particular technique to instruct PHP to free unsed memory, to force flushing buffers if any? Thanks

• iphone app hangs in AppDelegate (?)

  No nib/IB, so I've inserted "myAppDelegate" in main and deleted the reference to main.xib in info.plist. Debug continues nicely through all five tab controllers; they seem to have gotten properly loaded into the nav controller. In fact, control passes out of the last "}" in applicationDidFinishLaunching. But there was no (visible) response back at [window addSubview:[tabBarController view]]; and [window makeKeyAndVisible]; statements, much less to the loadView within the first tab (program execution never gets there). The last line is, UIApplication _performInitializationWithURL:sourceBundleID:]. I missed a step? I executed a step improperly?

• getting number of hours until the next event

  I've got a table with this data: [ID] [event_name] [last_event] 1 stats 2011-01-01 01:47:32 last_event is a timestamp. The event occurs every 48 hours (it's a cron job). I'd like to show my users the number of hours until the event executes again. So far I've got: SELECT (lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) FROM `cron_status` which gives me the exact time and date of the next occurence: 2011-01-03 01:47:32. So I figured if I subtracted the current datetime... SELECT ((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE()) FROM `cron_status` which (I think?) gives me the difference in unix time: 1980015. But if I divide that by 3600 to convert the seconds to hours... SELECT (((lastFinish + INTERVAL 48 HOUR) - SYSDATE())/3600) FROM `cron_status` I get numbers an order of magnitude too high: 549.99. Where am I going wrong? The target is returning the number of hours until the next execution. Thank you!

• jQuery: How to find elements *without* a class set

  Hey jQuery clever peeps, Why does this fail... $( 'div.contactAperson input' ).not( 'input.hadFocus' ).focus(function() { $(this).attr('value', '' ); }); ...it's meant to sniff out input's that have not got the class .hadFocus and then when one of that subset receives focus it should zap the value to null. Right now, input values are always getting zapped -- the test .not( 'input.hadFocus' ) is failing to stop execution. Contact table has 1,50,000 records CallsRecords has 75,000 records Indexes on CallsRecords: CallFrom CallTo PickUP Indexes on Contacts: PhoneNumber I am using this query to find matches but it take more than 7 minutes. • crypto++ / pycrypto with google app engine

  Hi, I am using crypto++ to send AES encrypted http requests to app engine, planning to decrypt them there. My plan is to encrypt the portion after the '?' so it's something like: http://myurl.com/Command?eiwjfsdlfjldkjfs when it is encrypted. However, I'm stuck figuring out how to decrypt it at the other end and still user get() on the response to get the args. Can someone advise if I am taking the wrong approach? Should I be decrypting and not using get() but my own parser then?

• Best approch to dynamically filter .net objects

  The project i´m working currently on has a way to define a filter to filter objects from a database. This filter is a pretty straitforward class containing filtercriteria that will be combined to a sql where-clause. The goal now is to use this filter class to filter .net objects as well. So the filter for example defines, that the title property of the object that it is applied to must contain some userdefined string etc. What are ways to approch this problem? What should the filter return instead of the sql where-clause and how can it be applied to the object? I´m thinking about this for hours and don´t yet have even a slight idea how to solve this. Been thinking about reflection, dynamic code execution, building expressions but still haven´t found an acutal starting point.

• Override jQuery style value

  Hi To resolve a jQuery slideDown/Up problem, I had to change one line in the jQuery file. I changed line 5738 from this.elem.style.display = "block"; to this.elem.style.display = "inline-block"; The block attribute messed up my lists when using slideDown/Up/Toggle. slideDown changes my list from display:inline to display:block during execution, and then back to display: inline again. It would be much better if it was inline (or inline-block) all the way. Is there a way to override the value stated above from my html page, or do I have to stick with my modified jQuery file? • Does SQL Server 2005 error message numbers back to the asp.net application?

  I'd like to get the message number and severity level information from SQL Server upon execution of an erroneous query. For example, when a user attempts to delete a row being referenced by another record, and the cascade relationship is "no action", I'd like the application to be able to check for error message 547 ("The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint...") and return a user friendly and localized message to the user. When running such a query directly on SQL Server, the following message is printed: Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 <Error message...> In an Asp.Net app is this information available in an event handler parameter or elsewhere? Also, I don't suppose anyone knows where I can find a definitive reference of SQL Server message numbers?

  We're seeing strange behavior when running two versions of a query on SQL Server 2005: version A: SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = 1234 ORDER BY name ASC version B: DECLARE @Id AS INT; SET @Id = 1234; SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @Id ORDER BY name ASC Both queries return 1000 rows; version A takes on average 15s; version B on average takes 4s. Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL? If we invoke this query via named parameters using NHibernate, we see the following query via SQL Server profiler: EXEC sp_executesql N'SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @id ORDER BY name ASC', N'@id INT', @id=1234; ...and this tends to perform as badly as version A. • How can I organize many results in a selectbox?

  I have a select box that is part of a form. It is currently querying the addresses table and displaying the addresses into the select box. I plan on having up to 100 addresses. I'm looking for a solution where I can show all the states if the user clicks on the select box. Then if the user hovers over a state it will show all the addresses for that specific state. Then if the user clicks on an address, it will show that as the picked option in the select box. This is like a dropdown menu within a select box. Does anyone know where I can find a solution as this?

• iPhone app launch times and Core Data migration

  I have a Core Data application which I plan to update with a new schema. The lightweight migration seems to work, but it takes time proportional to the amount of data in the database. This occurs in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions phase of the app. I want to avoid <app> failed to launch in time problems, so I assume I cannot keep the migration in the didFinishLaunchingWithOptions method. I assume the best method would involve performing the migration in a background thread. I assume also that I'd need to defer loading of the main ViewController until the loading completes to avoid using the managedObjectContext until initialization completes. Does this make sense, and is there example code (maybe in Apple sample projects) of this sort of initialization?

• Build Google App Engine Java source from Eclipse

  I would like to try to build Google App Engine for Java from source. I have tried this: I don't know how to solve the javac Ant task. I am on Mac OS X 10.6.8. The reason why I am trying to to create a Java Project from the source is that when I try to debug/step-into the sources downloaded from SVN, something is wrong in Eclipse and it does not track execution at the right code line. It seems to be executing "comment lines"? So I don't get an accurate tracking of the code path. I think what I would ideally need is: 1) svn checkout command with matching REV number of latest SDK 2) wget command downloading matching jar

• Would I really want to return the minimum date?

  An old work colleague used to quote his father about tools, "You have to be smarter than it." In the code below, Resharper is telling me, "Value assigned is not used in any execution path" (pointing to the first line). If I accept its offer of help, dt is not assigned a value ("today"). Is this a case where "I have to be smarter than it" and ignore their warning, or is this a case where the tool is smarter than me, and I'm just not understanding it? My take on the situation is that if the if statement fails, the current date is returned (the default value I want), but if I acquiesce to Resharper's "demands" it would return the default value for Datetime, which is the minimum date, which I assume is something like 7/4/1776 or 1/1/0000 or so. • valgrind - ignore glibc functions?

  Is it possible to tell valgrind to ignore some set of libraries? Specifically glibc libraries.. Actual Problem: I have some code that runs fine in normal execution. No leaks etc. When I try to run it through valgrind, I get core dumps and program restarts/stops. Core usually points to glibc functions (usually fseek, mutex etc). I understand that there might be some issue with incompatible glibc / valgrind version. I tried various valgrind releases and glibc versions but no luck. Any suggestions?
