• Freelancers do you have a surcharge for going to client site to work?

  I'm currently new to freelancing as a programmer and need to work what some of the "norms" are without making myself look like an amateur. I've already won some work from a local company doing C# development and quoting an hourly rate for work that i am doing from my office. However on one upcoming project I've been asked to come on-site (client office) to work a full week. Is it reasonable to charge more than my regular hourly rate for working on site? And how should i justify the extra charges?

• Mobile music playback on android phone keeps buffering

  I have copied some music to a ubuntu synced folder on my karmic machine. I have the Ubuntu One android app installed on android 2.2 phone. When listening to music I get frequent breaks whilst the music is buffering, even with full signal. every other music streaming servie such as last fm and bbc player are fine. What is going wrong? mp3s should not have trouble buffering over a good 3g signal. I have set cache size to 200mb but i cant find a buffer size. Is it my mp3s? they are usually in the order of 320kb/s this is a breaker for me if there is no solution which is a massive shame as i like the principal of the software. cheers

• Computer crashed during 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade

  My computer crashed (due to heat) during the update process for the 3.0.0.17-generic kernel upgrade. My computer will not boot ant all in 3.0.0.17 now and 3.0.0.16 is unstable (wireless networking doesn't work, also crashes often). I found the boot to previous versions tool at start up and the last stable version is 3.0.0.15-generic. However, my computer still thinks that it has 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic, even though both of these versions are broken. Is there anyway to force a reinstall of the 3.0.0.16-generic and 3.0.0.17-generic kernel updates from 3.0.0.15 and associated other updates?. (Without having to do a full reinstall?) I am running ubuntu 11.10. Thanks!

  The Mojarra 2.1.2 release was cut a few days ago. Here are the full Maven coordinates : api, impl. You can also get to the release notes and to the list of bugs fixed in this release. This is scheduled for inclusion into the upcoming GlassFish 3.1.1 release. In fact it's already integrated in the latest promoted build (#8) which also includes woodstox 4.1.1. Weld 1.1.1.Final has already been integrated a few builds ago. The JSF team is now working on JSR 344 (JSF 2.2) for which you can get a status by visiting http://jsf-spec.java.net/ and the associated mailing lists. A first expert draft is now available.

• DrRacket icon doesnt work?

  I installed DrRacket from the Ubuntu Software Center. All went well and an icon appeared however nothing happened when I clicked the icon so I removed it. Then went to the Developer website and downloaded full-5.3.0.21-bin-x86_64-linux-debian-squeeze.sh. I installed this via Terminal with sudo apt-get install racket. The DrRacket icon came back in Dash Home but again clicking it nothing appears to happen. How do I start DrRacket? I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS dual boot on a 64 bit Dell

• Restart Trouble Ubuntu 12.10

  I`ve installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 3 different machines: Acer AspireOne Netbook Lenovo T60 Notebook Desktop - P5P77 - Asus mainboard - I3 - porcessor I have the same issue on all of themm they won`t restart (Shut Down work), I can see the proceses are killed but it freezez on black screen total iresponsive. Even when I access the bios config to modify something then Save&Exit then restart I get the same thing. This is the same for all 3 machines. I also cleaned up the desktop system, last version of bios update, full HDD format, fresh win7 installed (practicly no trace of the old Ubuntu 12.10) still the same problem. Some time ago I had Ubuntu 11.10 on the desktop system, it worked perfectly. I also mention that I tried all combinations of ACPI settings in BIOS, unfortunately with no results.   I just make migration my ubuntu 12.04 home folder to fresh installed ubuntu 12.10. And again have problem with compiz. It have no one my custom settings! How it's possible then full copy home dir not transfer settings? Those things began the compiz start play with digits on config folders. like .compiz-1 or .compiz. I have now idea then I have to use this -1 then not. But I've rename my compiz folders in .gconf and .compiz. Which not help. How get my setting back. And why this mess happening?

  For LTS upgrades the recomendation is wait 3 months or first point release to is where the major bugs are fixed and the release is "stable" for production. What is the recommended amount of time to wait before upgrade to a non LTS release? Im just talking about the desktop version of course. Im asking because found this where say all release from 14.04 will be based on debian unstable: Cutting Edge: Starting with the 14.04 LTS development cycle, automatic full package import is performed from Debian unstable1 This is due to deploying ProposedMigration in the Ubuntu archive. • No HDMI output on 12.10, Intel HD graphics (Ironlake)

  I am unable to get any output to my external monitor on 12.10. The monitor is recognized and shows the native res (1920x1080, correct) but enabling has no effect. Graphics chipset is Intel Ironlake (Arrandale). I have tried: Full system update after installing Oibaf PPA updated drivers (https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers) Enabling SNA Kubuntu 12.10 (in addition to Ubuntu 12.10) Both were fresh installs. Nothing works, any troubleshooting ideas? Everything is fine on 11.10. UPDATE 1: Also tried using Intel drivers from Xorg-Edgers PPA (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) Still no output on HDMI.

• Uploading Files Using ASP.NET Web Forms, Generic Handler and jQuery

  In order to upload files from the client machine to the server ASP.NET developers use FileUpload server control. The FileUpload server control essentially renders an INPUT element with its type set to file and allows you to select one or more files. The actual upload operation is performed only when the form is posted to the server. Instead of making a full page postback you can use jQuery to make an Ajax call to the server and POST the selected files to a generic handler (.ashx). The generic handler can then save the files to a specified folder. • Java dev learning Python: what concepts do I need to wrap my head around?

  I've run through a few tutorials and written some small projects. I'm right in the middle of a small project now infact. All is going well enough thanks in no small part to Uncle Google (who usually points me to Stackoverflow ;-) Several times in the last few days I've found myself wondering "what am I missing?" - I feel that I'm still thinking in Java as I write in Python. This question over at StackOverflow is full of tips about what resources to read up on for learning Python, but I still feel that I'm a Java dev with a dictionary (no pun intended) to translate into Python. What I really want to do is refactor my head to be able to write Pythonic Python instead of Java disguised as Python (not that I want to loose my Java skills). So, the crux of my question is: what concepts does a Java dev really need to learn to think Pythonic? This includes anything that needs to be un-learnt. ps: I consider language syntax to not be particularly relevant to this question.

• Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy.   SharePoint 2010 Training: more information First of all, I am a proponent of SharePoint apps. As I have said many times over, SharePoint Apps make me very ‘appy, they are very app-propriate. But there are some points to consider that make a bit app-rehensive. These are all mentioned in my book “SharePoint 2013 - Planet of the Apps”, .. but here are some thoughts of the negatives of Apps that I think we need to consider before diving in, Mutliple Servers, More Complexity Apps, by definition will include an extra server. This excludes SharePoint-hosted apps of course. Extra servers by definition will add more complexity. As it is, when you introduce SharePoint to an organization, the number of servers multiply like bunnies. Now you will have additional servers, and these servers talking with each other. You will have to maintain trusts, and you will have to patch more stuff, reset more “admin” passwords – you get my point. Read full article ....

• Yet another GlassFish 3.1.1 promoted build

  Promoted build #9 for GlassFish 3.1.1 is available from the usual location. This is the "soft code freeze" build with only the "hard code freeze" build left before the release candidate. So if you have bugs you'd like to see fixed, voice your opinion *now*. As a quick reminder, GlassFish offers Web Profile or Full Platform distributions in ZIP or installer flavors (some more details in this blog post from last year but still relevant). If you've installed previous promoted builds or simply have the "dev" repository defined, then the Update Center will simply update the existing installed bits. In addition to the earlier update on 3.1.1 it's probably safe to say that this version was carefully designed to be highly compatible with the previous 3.x versions, thus leaving you with little reasons not to upgrade as soon as it comes out this summer.

• Is it bad practice to use <?= tag in PHP

  I've come across this PHP tag <?= ?> recently and I am reluctant to use it, but it itches so hard that I wanted to have your take on it. I know it is bad practice to use short tags <? ?> and that we should use full tags <?php ?> instead, but what about this one : <?= ?>? It would save some typing and it would be better for code readability, IMO. So instead of this: <input name="someVar" value="<?php echo $someVar; ?>"> I could write it like this, which is cleaner : <input name="someVar" value="<?= $someVar ?>"> Is using this operator frowned upon?

  Does anyone else out there long for the simpler days where you needed to move a jumper in the jumper block to set your modem card to use IRQ7 so it would not conflict with the interrupts used by other boards in your PC and your modem card came with a 78 page manual telling you everything you would need to know to write your own driver for the board including a full schematic along with the board layout showing every chip, capacitor, and resistor?  Ahhhhh, the simplicity!I am wrestling with UserPnp issues for a USB software licensing dongle that is needed by some third party software in one of our production applications. Of course, every machine in production is virtual, so it could be anything in the chain of the software application library to the device driver running on the VM to the configuration of the simulated USB port to the implementation of the USB connection and transport in the virtual host to the physical electrical connections in the USB port on the hypervisor.If only there were the virtual analog to a set of needle-nose pliers to move a virtual jumper.Come to think of it, I always used to drop those damn things such that they would land in an irretrievable position under the motherboard anyway.
