Is MongoDB a good choice or not for my application?

I have a Reporting application which stores the reports in xml format as recieved from source (XML schema is not defined, it can be any format) and those reports contain some keys and values. Like jobid, setid be keys for 1 type of report and userid, groupId for another type of report etc. The type of keys that can be referred from the document is determined by the namespaces used in the xml doc. These keys are stored on the basis of namespace used in the xml document. For e.g. If a tag in xml fragment uses namespace= "myspace1", then I have keys A and B for myspace1 stored in another table. It will fetch those keys from that table for this namespace, look for their values in xml doc and store it in another table along with the pointer to this xml document (Id of a record storing complete xml document in a cell). Use cases: When the user comes and queries for that key and value, I return the document or a set of documents that are having those key/value pairs. When the user comes and queries for a certain key and provide a name for xslt (pre stored), I fetch the set of documents fulfilling that criteria and convert that xml to html with the specified xslt. When the user comes and asks for a particular fragment of a doc then it can fetch a subset from a particular document also. When the user comes and queries for top x values of a certain key, I return the set of documents that are having top 10 values of that key. I am using DB2 database for its support of xml along with relational capabilities. That makes easier for me to run xpath expressions and fetch values of keys and also aggregate a set of documents fullfilling a criteria, all on the database side. Problems: DB2 stores XML doc of upto 2GB in size. Retrieval is very slow. If some thing involves many documents, then it takes significant time for things to show up in browser, and the user has to wait. Can MongoDb help in this case, as it is document oriented? can I do xml related xpath queries and document transformations on db side? Or is it ok to use both in such a case?

REST to Objects in C#

RESTful interfaces for web services are all the rage for many Web 2.0 sites. If you want to consume these in a very simple fashion, LINQ to XML can do the job pretty easily in C#. If you go searching for help on this, youll find a lot of incomplete solutions and fairly large toolkits and frameworks (guess how I know this) this quick article is meant to be a no fluff just stuff approach to making this work. POCO Objects Lets assume you have a Model that you want to suck data into from a RESTful web service. Ideally this is a Plain Old CLR Object, meaning it isnt infected with any persistence or serialization goop. Is 2 lines of push/pop code for each pre-draw-state too many?

I'm trying to simplify vector graphics management in XNA; currently by incorporating state preservation. 2X lines of push/pop code for X states feels like too many, and it just feels wrong to have 2 lines of code that look identical except for one being push() and the other being pop(). The goal is to eradicate this repetitiveness,and I hoped to do so by creating an interface in which a client can give class/struct refs in which he wants restored after the rendering calls. Also note that many beginner-programmers will be using this, so forcing lambda expressions or other advanced C# features to be used in client code is not a good idea. Software engineering project idea feedback [on hold]

I'm a third year student currently undergoing my project/dissertation section of my degree. I have drafted a proposal for my final year project and would appreciate any feedback. The feedback can be anything constructive either specific to this proposal, the area that I will be working and researching in or my ideas. I will accept all input. Aims My aim is to attempt a proof of concept and prototype a runtime-as-a-service (RaaS). This cloud based runtime will allow clients to dynamically offload tasks or create cloud applications. Currently software-as-a-service (SaaS) cloud applications are purpose built and have a predefined scope in which they can assist or serve the client; this scope cannot be changed without physical alteration to the client and server software. With RaaS the client potentially could define any task it wanted at any time depending on its environment variables, the client and server would then communicate parameters and returns for that task. For the client to utilize a RaaS it must be able to conceive and then define a task using an appropriate XML vocabulary. As the scope of the cloud solution is defined by the client at its runtime, the cloud solution only has to exist for as long as the client requires it to as opposed to a client using a dedicated service. Deliverables The crux of the project will require an XML vocabulary in which the client and server will communicate. I’ll prototype the server application that will dynamically create and manage cloud solutions. The solution will be coded using an interpreted language, such as python or javascript, which can evaluate expressions in runtime or a language that can dynamically compile such as C# or Java. As a further proof of concept I will also produce a mock client that offloads tasks to the server. The report will attempt to explain the different flavours of cloud computing solutions including infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and SaaS including real world examples and where the use of a RaaS could have improved the overall example solution. Facial Recognition for Retail

My son decided to do his science project on how the brain recognizes faces. Faces are so complicated and important that the brain has a dedicated area for just that purpose. During our research, we came across some emerging uses for facial recognition in the retail industry. If you believe the movies, recognizing faces as they walk by a camera is easy for computers but that's not the reality. Huge investments are being made by the U.S. government in this area, with a focus on airport security. Now, companies like Eye See are leveraging that research for marketing purposes. They do things like track eyes while viewing newspaper ads to see which ads get more "eye time." This can help marketers make better placement and color decisions. But what caught my eye (that was too easy) was their new mannequins that watch shoppers. These mannequins, being tested at European retailers like Benetton, watch shoppers that walk by and identify their gender, race, and age. This helps the retailer better understand the types of customers being attracted to the outfit on the mannequin. Of course to be most accurate, the software has pictures of the employees so they can be filtered out. Since the mannequins are closer to the shoppers and at eye-level, they are more accurate than traditional in-ceiling LP cameras. Marketing agency RedPepper is offering retailers the ability to recognize loyalty shoppers at their doors using Facedeal. For customers that have opted into the program, when they enter the store their face is recognized and they are checked in. Then, as a reward, they are sent an offer on their smartphone. It won't be long before retailers begin to listen to shoppers are they walk the aisles, then keywords can be collected and aggregated to give the retailer an idea of what people are saying about their stores and products. Sentiment analysis based on what's said or even facial expressions can't be far off. Clearly retailers need to be cautions and respect customer privacy. That's why these technologies are emerging slowly. But since the next generation of shoppers are less concerned about privacy, I expect these technologies to appear sporadically in the next five years then go mainstream. Time will tell.

ClearTrace Performance on 170GB of Trace Files

I’ve always worked to make ClearTrace perform well. That’s probably because I spend so much time watching it work. I’m often going through two or three gigabytes of trace files but I rarely get the chance to run it on a really large set of files. One of my clients wanted to run a full trace for a week and then analyze the results. At the end of that week we had 847 200MB trace files for a total of nearly 170GB. I regularly use 200MB trace files when I monitor production systems. I usually get around 300,000 statements in a file that size if it’s mostly stored procedures. So those 847 trace files contained roughly 250 million statements. (That’s 730 bytes per statement if you’re keeping track. Newer trace files have some compression in them but I’m not exactly sure what they’re doing.) On a system running 1,000 statements per second I get a new file every five minutes or so. It took 27 hours to process these files on an older development box. That works out to 1.77MB/second. That means ClearTrace processed about 2,654 statements per second. You can query the data while you’re loading it but I’ve found it works better to use a second instance of ClearTrace to do this. I’m not sure why yet but I think there’s still some dependency between the two processes. ClearTrace is almost always CPU bound. It’s really just a huge, ugly collection of regular expressions. It only writes a summary to its database at the end of each trace file so that usually isn’t a bottleneck. At the end of this process, the executable was using roughly 435MB of RAM. Certainly more than when it started but I think that’s acceptable. The database where all this is stored started out at 100MB. After processing 170GB of trace files the database had grown to 203MB. The space savings are due to the “datawarehouse-ish” design and only storing a summary of each trace file. So what I did was to create a progress bar with indeterminate animation. It's always an interesting task, to try and explain what you do to family and friends. I have described IPv6 as the "Next Generation Internet" or "Second Internet" but the hollow expressions on my kids faces scream for the instant relief of the latest video game. Never one to give up easily, I have formulated a new example - the Post Office... Similar to the Post Office the Internet delivers mail and packages based on addresses. As the number of residences, businesses, and delivery locations increased, the 5 digit ZIP Code (Washington, DC 20005) was expanded to ZIP+4 allowing for more precise delivery points (Postmaster General, Washington, DC 20260-3100). Ah, if only computers were as simple. IPv6 isn't an add-on or expansion of the existing IPv4 Addressing, it is a new addressing model which will allow the internet to grow from a single computer in the basement of a university or your parents kitchen table, to support the multitude of smart phones, smart TV's, tablets, dvr's, and disk players, all clambering to connect for information. Unfortunetly there are only a finite number of IPv4 public addresses left, and those are being consumed at an ever increasing rate. Few people could have predicted the explosive growth of the internet or the shortage of IPv4 addresses we now face - but there is a "Plan B" and that is the vastly larger address space of IPv6. Many in the industry have labeled this a "business continuity" problem, when in fact most companies will be able to continue conducting business once they run out of existing IPv4 Addresses. The problem is really a Customer Continuity problem, how will businesses communicate with existing customers and reach new customers online who's only option is to adopt IPv6 when IPv4 is depleted? Perhaps a first step is publishing a blog that is also accessible via IPv6, it's just a few extra bits. Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered. Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. Hello, I have web service on IIS 7 on Windows 2008. This web service must dlls of .NET Framework 3.5 (I have error about System.Linq using when I try to browse the web site) The only place I found where it is possible to change .NET Framework version is application pools management, but The only two options I have are: no management code and .NET Framework 2. In add/remove programs I have .NET Framework 3.5 installed and event does to it repair and iisreset, but I still have only to options in application pools management. Any ideas? Thank you for ahead.

Unity The parameter host could not be resolved when attempting to call constructor

When I attempt to instantiate my instance of the base class I get the error: a ResolutionFailedException with roughly the following error "The parameter host could not be resolved when attempting to call constructor" I'm currently not using an Interface for the base type and my instance of the class is inheriting the base type class. I'm new to Unity and DI so I'm thinking its something I forgot possibly. This is not quite a cross product here, and the order of the results are absolutely crucial. I can see similarities with Numeric bases (since the order is important as well), and I'm sure there are permutations/combinations lurking in here too. The question is - how to write an algorithm like this that'll cope with any number of sets of strings? Linq, non-Linq; I'm not fussed. Why am I doing this? Indeed, why!? In Asp.Net MVC - I want to have partial views that can be redefined for a given combination of back-end/front-end culture and language. The most basic of these would be, for a given base view View, we could have View-en-GB, View-en, View-GB, and View, in that order of precedence (recognising of course that the language/culture codes could be the same, so some combinations might be the same - a Distinct() will solve that). But I also have other views that, in themselves, have other possible combinations before culture is even taken into account (too long to go into - but the fact is, this algo will enable a whole bunch of really cool that I want to offer my developers!). I want to produce a search list of all the acceptable view names, iterate through the whole lot until the most specific match is found (governed by the order that this algo will produce these concatenations in) then serve up the resolved Partial View. The result of the search can later be cached to avoid the expense of running the algorithm all the time. I already have a really basic version of this working that just has one enumerable of strings. But this is a whole different kettle of seafood! Any help greatly appreciated.

virtualizing a .net application

My professor ask me to create an application and it will be run on a machine without .NET installed. My application utilizes .NET 4.0 (just basic c# necessites but without the LINQ and complicated references) and he only wants executable file. So how can we run this application on his machine without install .NET (like the setup files and stuff)???? I was thinking of virtualizing via VMware ThinApp, but I find it difficult since it requires the application to be installed, yet my professor only wants the application to be in exe format (so thinapp cannot track the changes in my system). Any alternative? suggestions?

Postfix rewrite sender: why doesn't this work

I have server A with an IP address only and a dummy FQDN (on the basis all machines should have a FQDN): pants.net.invalid. All mail is relayed through another server elsewhere, which works fine. On server A, Postfix rewrites the sender address with smtp_generic_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/generic. According to the Rewrite manual at http://www.postfix.org/ADDRESS_REWRITING_README.html#remote, this should rewrite all outgoing external mail's Sender address: $ cat /etc/postfix/generic @pants.net.invalid [email protected] but it does not. postmap -q [email protected] returns nothing. This works: [email protected] [email protected] It seems as though it is doing regex matching even though I specify type hash:. Clearly I am misunderstanding the manual. I don't want to use regex or pcre expressions because there are only a couple of users (root and two others) and I don't want the overhead. I can specify the users exactly and it works. But, I would like to know what I am misunderstanding for future reference. Thanks.

Which server software and configuration to retrieve from multiple POP servers, routing by address to correct user

I am setting up a small email server on a Debian machine, which needs to pick up mail from a variety of POP servers and figure out who to send it to from the address, but I'm not clear what software will do what I need, although it seems like a very simple question! For example, I have 2 users, Alice and Bob. Any email to [email protected] ([email protected] etc) should go to Alice, all other mail to domain.example.com should go to Bob. Any email to [email protected] should go to Bob, and [email protected] should go to Alice Anything to *@bobs.place.com should go to Bob And so on... The idea is to pull together a load of mail addresses that have built up over the years and present them all as a single mailbox for Bob and another one for Alice. I'm expecting something like Postfix + Dovecot + Amavis + Spamassassin + Squirrelmail to fit the bill, but I'm not sure where the above comes in, can Postfix deal with it as a set of defined regular expressions, or is it a job for Amavis, or something else entirely? Do I need fetchmail in this mix, or is its role now included in one of the other components above. I think of it as content-filtering, but everything I read about content-filtering is focussed on detecting spam rather than routing email.
