• Dealing with dependencies between WCF services when using Castle Windsor

  I have several WCF services which use castle windsor to resolve their dependencies. Now I need some of these services to talk to each other. The typical structure is service -- Business Logic -- DAL The calls to the other services need to occur at Business Logic level. What is the best approach for implementing this? Should I simply inject a service proxy into the business logic? Is this wasteful if for example, only one of two method from my service need to use this proxy? What if the services need to talk to each other? - Will castle windsor get stuck in a loop trying to resolve each services dependencies?

• Advanced Where Statements in Linq to Entity Framework

  Hi, I am wanting to create a Where statement within my Linq statement, but have hit a bit of a stumbling block. I would like to split a string value, and then search using each array item in the Where clause. In my normal Sql statement I would simply loop through the string array, and build up there Where clause then either pass this to a stored procedure, or just execute the sql string. But am not sure how to do this with Linq to Entity? ( From o In db.TableName Where o.Field LIKE Stringvalue Select o ).ToList() Hope you can help. Thanks in advance!

• Why Switch/Case and not If/Else If?

  This question in mainly pointed at C/C++, but I guess other languages are relevant as well. I can't understand why is switch/case still being used instead of if/else if. It seems to me much like using goto's, and results in the same sort of messy code, while the same results could be acheived with if/else if's in a much more organized manner. Still, I see these blocks around quite often. A common place to find them is near a message-loop (WndProc...), whereas these are among the places when they raise the heaviest havoc: variables are shared along the entire block, even when not propriate (and can't be initialized inside it). Extra attention has to be put on not dropping break's, and so on... Personally, I avoid using them, and I wonder wether I'm missing something? Are they more efficient than if/else's? Are they carried on by tradition?

• Ruby: change each value in a hash with something like #collect for arrays?

  Hi! I'd like to replace each value in a hash with value.some_method. For example in a simple hash {"a" = "b", "c" = "d"} every value should be .upcase-d so it looks like {"a" = "B", "c" = "D"}. I tried #collect and #map but always just get arrays back. Is there an 'elegant' way to do this? Thanks in advance, Adam Nonymous UPDATE: Damn, I forgot: The hash is in an instance variable which should not be changed. I need a new hash with the changed values, but would prefer not to define that variable explicitly and then loop over the hash filling it. Something like new_hash = hash.magic {...} ;)

  From the preface of the second edition of Kernighan and Ritchie's "The C Programming Language": As before, all examples have been tested directly from the text, which is in machine-readable form. That quote threw me for a loop. What exactly does it mean? Was the original manuscript written as a literate program? My first thought was that this book, published in 1988 (original, first edition in 1978) predates literate programming, but now I'm not so sure. Can anybody shed some light on this?

It should report the number of rows with the same values for (green.h.0, green.v.0, and offset.0) by only looking at the previous rows. The example above uses the expected values, but assume they are incorrect. How can I add a new column (say "count") which will count all previous rows which have the same values of the specified variables? I have gotten help on a similar problem of just selecting all rows with the same values for specified columns, so I supposed I could just write a loop around that, but it seems inefficient to me.

  Hi there, I currently started to "port" my console projects to WinForms, but it seems I am badly failing doing that. I am simply used to a console structure: I got my classes interacting with each other depending on the input coming from the console. A simple flow: Input -> ProcessInput -> Execute -> Output -> wait for input Now I got this big Form1.cs (etc.) and the "Application.Run(Form1);" But I really got no clue how my classes can interact with the form and create a flow like I described above. I mean, I just have these "...._Click(object sender....)" for each "item" inside the form. Now I do not know where to place / start my flow / loop, and how my classes can interact with the form. thanks and regards daemonfire

• Evaluating Django Chained QuerySets Locally

  Hello All: I am hoping someone can help me out with a quick question I have regarding chaining Django querysets. I am noticing a slow down because I am evaluating many data points in the database to create data trends. I was wondering if there was a way to have the chained filters evaluated locally instead of hitting the database. Here is a (crude) example: pastries = Bakery.objects.filter(productType='pastry') # <--- will obviously always hit DB, when evaluated cannoli = pastries.filter(specificType='cannoli') # <--- can this be evaluated locally instead of hitting the DB when evaluated, as long as pastries was evaluated? I have checked the docs and I do not see anything specifying this, so I guess it's not possible, but I wanted to check with the 'braintrust' first ;-). BTW - I know that I can do this myself by implementing some methods to loop through these datapoints and evaluate the criteria, but there are so many datapoints that my deadline does not permit me manually implementing this.   Greetings, I have some control which display bunch of textblocks and image. I would like the image to be surrounded by text. I have already implemented some functionality by using FlowDocument and custom bindable run control. (These controls are included inside user control). When I generate lots of these controls in treeview, application goes into infinite loop. I asked on forums before about this problem and the answer was that it can be WPF issue. Howver when I removed bindable run from my user control, problem dissappeared. Now I am trying to implement other solution where image will be surrounded by text. Can someone please help me? • Rails CSV import, adding to a related table

  Hi, I have a csv importing system on my app (used locally only) which parses the csv file line by line and adds the data to the database table. There is a relationship that courses HABTM years and years HABTM courses. In the csv file (effectively in row[5] to row[8]) are the year_id s. Is there a way that I can add this within the method above. I am confused as to how to loop over the 4 items and add them to the courses_years table. Thank you Jack

I'd like to know the 'right' way to do attach a click event to a bunch of elements, but then know in the event handler which one of my elements was clicked. I've come up with the following: MYNS.CarouselHelper.prototype.attachImgHandlers = function () { $j(".carouselItem").bind("click", this, function(e){ e.data.openCarouselImage(e) }); } I then have the following in my event handler: MYNS.CarouselHelper.prototype.openCarouselImage = function(e) { var img = e.currentTarget; // Do stuff to the image element }; Is this 'right'? How do I manage to use wait() & how do I know when one of my executable is finished generating the result to get the result? • PHP: how to stop ignore_user_abort, is it a good solution for long run program

  let say i have send email program which need to run arround 7 hours. but i cant open the browser for 7 hours beside cronjob, ignore_user_abort() will it be a solution? will the script stop when all email has sent and the program has finish the loop? or it will keep eating the server memory? some people said u may need to add some output at the end of the program to avoid the program run forever? and some people also said echo a litte bit string will not stop the script, but has to use ob_flush, any example for this?

• Determing Python version at runtime

  The problem I'm having is that I've written code that depends on features in python2.6 so I'm trying to build a check that will produce a useful error if someone tries to run it on a machine with python lower than 2.6. The code I put in to check for the specific version and match it should work fine but the problem I have is the interpreter on a 2.4 machine reads the file and sees a "finally" at the end of my try loop and errors out before it gets far enough into execution for my if statement to handle the version mismatch. Other than changing the magic line to specifically look for /usr/bin/python2.6 is there a way python can handle this sort of thing?

• Efficient calculation of matrix cumulative standard deviation in r

  I recently posted this question on the r-help mailing list but got no answers, so I thought I would post it here as well and see if there were any suggestions. I am trying to calculate the cumulative standard deviation of a matrix. I want a function that accepts a matrix and returns a matrix of the same size where output cell (i,j) is set to the standard deviation of input column j between rows 1 and i. NAs should be ignored, unless cell (i,j) of the input matrix itself is NA, in which case cell (i,j) of the output matrix should also be NA. I could not find a built-in function, so I implemented the following code. Unfortunately, this uses a loop that ends up being somewhat slow for large matrices.   First here's the code: <?php $qty = $_GET['qty']; for($i=0; $i < $qty; $i++) { setcookie('animals', $_COOKIE['animals'].'(lion)', time()+3600); } ?> Here's what I'm trying to do: I want to set the value of the "animals" cookie to "(lion)". The number of instances of "(lion)" that should be in the cookie is determined by the "qty" GET parameter's value. So for example if the pages url is: http://site.com/script.php?qty=10 then the value of the cookie should be: (lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion)(lion) but now it just sets the value once despite the setcookie function being inside the loop, why isn't it working?
