• What are Silverlight, WCF RIA services or applications?

  I asked a question here on programmers yesterday about learning HTML & CSS and the community was pretty generous to provide great answers. One of the answers was given by Emmad Kareem and that was : "if you can't do HTML, don't give up. Consider using Silverlight". This answer made me visit Silverlight.net and I came across the terms WCF RIA Services, Silverlight applications. After going through the website and some articles on website i am unable to draw a conclusive understanding on what this is all about. Is this another way of building websites using .NET, and is just like another framework like ASP.NET MVC3. What scenario's and requirements are basically targeted to silverlight applications or we are free to use either of Asp.net MVC or Silverlight in any web-application requirements.

• Screen magnifier wrecks login screen — how to get rid of it?

  In the Ubuntu / GNOME login screen, I tried some of the different accessibility settings out of curiosity. Big mistake! Enabling the "use screen magnifier" (or whatever) option breaks down the view horribly, and makes it impossible to even access the settings again: (Right click & View Image for full size) Yes, I tried to access every corner of the screen using the mouse, but there's just chaos everywhere. Fortunately, I can still log in (pressing "Esc" makes the normal login dialog appear on the left-hand monitor). My question is, how to disable the "magnifier" option outside of the login screen itself? (By editing some config file perhaps?) I don't care about getting the magnifier mode to work properly - just make it go away altogether, please.

• Why IDE has to be made in the language they are designed for?

  Look at IntellijIDEA IDE, its a pretty sick ide but its made in Java and we all know that Java suck at GUI. Same goes for Eclipse. Though its way better and adopted SWT but it could have been best if it was developed in C/C++. We have really good systems now and thats why we don't feel that these IDES are nothing much but a memory hog. Why the IDE's have to be written in the language they are designed for ? Okay i know that IDE is a cool way to show how strong a language can be but even then someitmes, that specific language might not be best for a particular tastk.

• Triggering custom events in AJAX callbacks

  I'm pretty new to JavaScript, but one of the things that's been frustrating is that our AJAX callbacks have been getting packed with different functionality, making it difficult to keep everything separated and organized. I'm really new to programming, I have a feeling learning MVC a bit more would help me, but for now using custom events seems like it could help me keep my code a lot cleaner and prevent some problems. • Java Transaction Service without the application server

  Is it possible to have a Java standalone application (no application server attached) that exposes some operations that a client can call and be the one to manage the transactions? I was thinking this application to expose JNDI resources and get a hold of a java:comp/UserTransaction from there, get also a bean from there and call methods A, B and C on it and coordinate the transaction from the client? The application I'm writing isn't complex enough so that I need a big application server around it so I'm thinking to have a standalone JTS inside it that the client could interact with from a transactions point of view. I don't have much experience with distributed transactions and don't really know how to tackle the issue. Is it even possible? Am I getting myself into something beyond what a mere mortal (programmer) can handle? How can I approach this?

• Starting a career with broad experience or specific experience

  I am a senior in college going for a CS degree. I have an internship that works with a variety of languages and gives me a pretty good amount of responsibility. The only problem is that it is the only job experience I've had. My question is whether or not it might be a good idea to work another internship, keep the same internship, or in addition to the previous options, to get a masters degree so that i can extend my education and time to gather the usually necessary 2-3 years of industry experience. Obviously there's no outright correct way, but i just want to know if it is more accepted to get experience with different companies or to stick with one to show commitment.

• Teamwork 101 for the solo newbie

  Forgive my newbishness but I have a question to ask about teamwork...mainly because I stink at it. Most of my projects up until this point have been solo so I have a very limited experience with teamwork. I did make graphics for a game that was being developed by several people, but that was completely different than programming with several different people. Right now I'm working with someone else on an indie MMO along with a few other team members. I've already made some pretty stupid mistakes, (like rewriting EVERYTHING) so I have two questions for you guys: 1) What are some of the most common mistakes that people make in a team environment and how can they be avoided? 2) How can the structure of your program be altered to allow for multiple teams members to work on different parts of the program at the same time? Am I correct in saying that using a GPL'ed web application framework such as Composite C1 would NOT obligate a company to share the source code we write against said framework? That is the purpose of the AGPL, am I correct? Does this also apply to Javascript frameworks like KendoUI? The GPL would require any changes that we make to the framework be made available to others if we were to offer it for download. In other words, merely loading a web sites content into my browser is not "conveying" or "distributing" that software. I have been arguing that we should avoid GPL web frameworks and now after researching I am pretty sure I am wrong but wanted to get other opinions? Seth

• Implementing custom "Remember Me" with Stripe

  Implementing remember me with Stripe, while not using their Checkout (not supported on PhoneGap), seems to be fine using the path: First time: Request token on the client side using card info. Create customer on server side using token. Upon confirm, charge customer. Second time: Check if current user is Stripe customer by requesting the info from our server. If is Stripe customer, show "use credit card on file" instead of regular CC form. Upon confirm, charge customer. However, there is one important convenience items missing--last four digits of card number. Most sites inform you of the card you're using before making the payment, pretty important in case you have to switch out cards. I have seen that you can retrieve charges which would allow me to get the last four digits. Is it bad practice to pull that and display it? Are there alternative solutions anyone has in mind?

• Can't remove Ubuntu Desktop from dropdown menu on logon screen

  Hello All, I'm running Ubuntu on an Eee PC with the Netbook interface. I installed Ubuntu Desktop via Aptitude to see how well it works on the Eee PC, and after a while I wanted to rid myself of it. So, I purged it using Aptitude, but it still shows up as an option in the dropdown menu on the login screen. Is there any way I can remove the Ubuntu Desktop option from the dropdown menu? It's not a big deal I guess... I'm just curious now how to do it. :)

• I am trying to build libmtp 1.1.14 but I cannot fix this error

  I have run this in a terminal. git clone git://libmtp.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/libmtp/libmtp cd libmtp ./autogen.sh (answering yes to all questions) But when I try to run the ./configure --prefix=/usr/ I get this error: checking whether to build static libraries... yes ./configure: line 11739: AC_LIB_PREPARE_PREFIX: command not found ./configure: line 11740: AC_LIB_RPATH: command not found ./configure: line 11745: syntax error near unexpected token `iconv' ./configure: line 11745: ` AC_LIB_LINKFLAGS_BODY(iconv)' I have built and installed the libiconv from here. I do not know what to do, been trying for a few hours but I am pretty noob to Linux. How can i fix this? The lines 11739 to 11745 in the configure file looks like this: AC_LIB_PREPARE_PREFIX AC_LIB_RPATH AC_LIB_LINKFLAGS_BODY(iconv)
