• Windows 7 Computer Maintenance - Restore removed Desktop Shortcuts

  I'm aware about the inbuilt nightmate 'tool' of Microsofts which is making every network administrators job a nightmare (if left turned on). In short it'll happily delete every desktop shortcut to a network resource. We have it disabled by default. My question is related to recovering these shortcuts, Windows doesn't seem to dump them into the Recycle Bin and although you can 'restore previous versions' of the Desktop folder, you are unable to do it with the user logged in... Rather a problem if you only have the 1 user account. We have a user who (although the 'Computer Maintenance' tool is turned off) had it come up in 'Action Centre' and chose to run it. I've been unable to reproduce it, but the tool has certainly run (and removed 24 shortcuts from her desktop) although it is still saying 'Windows is not checking your system for maintenance problems'. ?! Very fustrating! Any ideas if these shortcuts are backed up/moved elsewhere so i can easily find and restore them?

• HP Probook 4530s great specs, but lagging. Hard Drive?

  I have this laptop, which has a i3 processor, 4gb memory, 7200rpm hard drive. So there is nothing wrong with the specs. Even when I have no applications open, simply closing and opening windows, lags. Or opening the start menu, or dragging icons across the desktop. sometimes even the cursor lags. So I checked out the resource monitor, and the resources using disk activity are svchost Avast ------- my antivirus, but not much System (PID 4) ------ This is using a huge chunk The total disk activity fluctuates between %50 - %100

• mod_rewite Rule: root/? root/app/views/home/home.php

  I am shocking at mod_rewite, here's the scenario: I need a rule that rewrites mydomain.com to mydomain.com/app/views/home/home.php. The rule, or set of rules rather, must also rewite mydomain.com/signin to mydomain.com/app/views/signin/signin.php, and work in a similar fashion for any subdirectory, for example: mydomain.com/subdir must redirect to mydomain.com/app/views/subdir/subdir.php. The rules must also work with or without the trailing slash, for example: ….com or ….com/. Thank you all, your help is much appreciated! If you could outline how and why your solution works or direct me to a good resource that explains it, I'd be exceptionally grateful! Edit: I have got a simple .htaccess file with this: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^$ http://mydomain.local/~Jay/some_awesome_app/app/views/home/home.php This does the redirect but changes the URL in the address bar too! I've not got a trailing [R] flag so why would this be?

• What are the best options for a root filesystem hosted on SSD under Linux

  I'm working on an embedded system which is going to be booting and hosting it's rootfs on an SSD disk. We are currently looking at using Intel X-18M SSDs. The file system structure will have a fairly static /usr section (modulo software upgrades) and an active /var and /var/log for maintaining state and logging. Given the wear-levelling done by the underlying flash does having separate partitions help or hinder? As modern SSDs appear as straight block devices and hide their mapping magic behind their firmware is there any point trying to optimise the choice of file-system that sits on-top of the SSD? Finally does enable SMART monitoring make any sense in this context or are their SSD specific ways of determining the underlying health of the storage hardware?

• It it possible to have multiple ReWrite rules that all do the same Action, for an IIS7.5 webserver?

  I've got rewrite module working great for my IIS7.5 site. Now, I wish to add a number of urls that all goto an HTTP 410-Gone status. Eg. <rule name="Old Site = image1" patternSyntax="ExactMatch" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="image/loading_large.gif"/> <match url="image/aaa.gif"/> <match url="image/bbb.gif"/> <match url="image/ccc.gif"/> <action type="CustomResponse" statusCode="410" statusReason="Gone" statusDescription="The requested resource is no longer available" /> </rule> but that's invalid - the website doesn't start saying there's a rewrite config error. Is there another way I can do this? I don't particularly want define a single URL and ACTION for each url.

• Real time mirroring between two sql server databases

  Hi, I'm a c# programmer, not a DBA and I've had the (mis)fortune to be handed a database admin task. So please bear this in mind when answering this question. What I've been asked to do is to create a real time two-way mirror between two databases with a 10 Megabit connection between them. So when either changes it updates the other. This is not a standard data mirroring/failover task where one DB is the master and the other is a backup - both are live and each needs to instantly reflect changes made to the other. In my head this sounds like a tall order, one which may even be impossible - after all in a rapidly changing environment with lots of users this is going to be massively resource intensive and create locks and queues of jobs all over the place. Is it possible? If so, can anyone either give me some basic instructions and/or point me at some places to start my reading and research? Cheers, Matt

I'm trying to avoid the non sense of permission issue for crontab. Also there is not much good resource on the web for this. Will this daemon process automatically start during a server/system restart. If not how can I achieve this?

  I come from a part of the world where the average Hollywood movie is released a year + later than in US. For example: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be released only 5-6 months down the lane. The Reader, I think will not be released at all. Is this a right justification for me to download movies from the torrent networks and watch them? Even if I don’t share it?   I'm installing a 2008 instance on a 2003 machine which is already running 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group?

  Changing the entire question as earlier one was very confusing. I have been exploring different clustering system to run Virtual machines on two different machines on LAN with high availability. Currently I am already using DRBD resource on two different machines on Primary/Secondary mode. In case the primary fails I manually promote the secondary to Primary and start the VM. I also explored Gluster and looks good, however, I would rather prefer clustering over Gluster (user space FS). So if anyone has idea which one would be better from ease of use prospective please I would be interested in. Moreover, sheepdog project appears good, however, could not find much documentations/Howtos. I am using Centos 6.

• Disabling at application level a nic (network interface) on Windows

  How can I disable at application level a network interface? The main question is this: If I disable the nic trough wmic (win7) or devcon (XP), the "plug and play" of a wired nic doesn't work any more. For example, if the user put the cable on a disabled nic, the OS doesn't know about it. So I need to persist the enable condition but disabling the networking like a disable nic. There's some API, network configuration (routing, changing ip, changing gateway, any), .NET Framework resource (Only NetFramework 2.0) or do you can think in any workaround to do this?   Where are the Microsoft application compatibility update settings stored on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 computer? Microsoft periodically release application compatibility updates (e.g. KB929427), where they list the shims that should be applied to a program in order to workaround known bugs in the software. Where are these app compat flags stored, and how can i see what shims are being applied? i have a feeling that a recent app compat update included a flag to force a particular piece of software, that we use, to require administrator. Because the task is scheduled to run nightly, and the running user does not have administrative privelages, the task is failing to start. The application is requiring to be elevated. It has the UAC shield overlay. The application has no RT_MANIFEST resource, and the compatibility option Run this program as administrator is disabled (per-user and all users). So all that's left is some secret global setting. i know user-specified compat flags are stored in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows NT \CurrentVersion \AppCompatFlags \Layers

• Unable to open Synaptic manager, unable to install packages, what can I do?

  I have installed the sun java6-jdk package but it's not installed completely. After that it's giving an error when I try to install a new package. In terminal when I write "sudo apt-get install [any package name]" I get an error like this: E: could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock -open (11 Resource temporable ) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg). Also Synaptic package manager is not opening and none of the packages are downloading through any of the methods I know. Please help!

• Why packets injected with libpcap are duplicated?

  I'm using sharppcap in order to send packets as part of a monitoring system. Usually it works well but I've encountered the strangest bug on a hosted vista machine and I would like your help. On that virtual vista machine, injected packets are duplicated. That is, if I send a ping request using libpcap, it somehow gets duplicated and I get two requests on the destination machine. The two requests are almost identical byte-wise, and the only difference between them is that the second packet's TTL field is one minus the original packet's value. Using wireshark I can see the packet gets duplicated before it (and its clone) leave the vista machine. The problem is manifested even when using other tools for injecting packets using libpcap (namely PlayCap). Any ideas?

• Hardware/Software inventory open source projects

  Dear Stackoverflowers I would like to develop a Network Inventory application that works on any operating system. Reports on every possible resource attacehd to a network. Reports all pertinent details of hardware and software. Thats (and i hate to use the phrase) my "End Game". However I am running before i can crawl here. I have no experience of this type of development, e.g. discovering a computers hardware and software settings. I've spent almost two weeks googling and come up short! :-(. So I am turning to you to ask these questions:- My first step is to find an existing open source project i can incorporate into my own code that extracts the fine grained details i am after, e.g. EVERYTHING there is to know about the hardaware and software on a single machine. Does this project exist? or do i have to develop that first? Have i got to write all this in C? I am guessing getting this information about a computer is going to be easier than for printers, scanners, routers etc... e.g. everything else you would find attached to a network. Once i have access to a single computers details i then need to investigate how i can traverse an entire newtork of printers, scanners, routers, load balancers, switches, firewalls, workstations, servers, storeage devices, laptops, monitors, the list goes on and on One problem i have is i dont have a 1000 machine newtork to play on! Is there any such resource available on theinternet? (is that a silly question?) Anywho, if you dont ask you wont find out! One aspect iam really looking forward to finding out how to travers the entire network, should i be using TCP/IP for this? Whats a good site, blog, usergorup, book for TCP/IP development? How do i go about getting through firewalls? How many questions can i ask in one go? :-) My previous question on this topic ended up with PYTHON being championed as the language/script to go with to develop this application in. Having looked at a few PYTHON examples they all seemed to be related to WINDOWS networks and interrogating Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). I had the feeling you cant rely on whats in WMI, and even if you can that s no good for UNIX netwrks. Surely there exist common code for extracting hardware and software details from a computer? Why cant i find it on the internet? Pease help? Theres no prizes though :-( Thanks in advance I would like to appologise if i have broken forum rules or not tried hard enough on my own before asking for assistance. I just would like to start moving forward with this as its one of the best projects i have been involved with. I am inspired by the many differnt number of challenges involved and that if i manage to produce a useful application at the end of it it would hopefully be extremely helpful to many people. • Intraforest user account merge with Active Directory

  I have a scenario where there is a root domain (RD) and two child domains (CD1 and CD2). Users have accounts on both CD1 and CD2, with identical samAccountNames, names etc, and various applications either use the CD1 or CD2 account for authentication to resources. I need to collapse CD2 into CD1, so I want to merge the accounts together. However ADMT does not allow me this option (merge options are greyed out), I think because it does not support intraforest merge of accounts (although it does not explicitly state this anywhere in the documentation). My question is - what is the easiest way for me to merge these accounts? Ultimately all I really need (I think) is for the SID of CD2\user1 to be added to the SIDHistory of CD1\user1 - is there a tool that supports this? Computer accounts and profiles are not a concern for this scenario. Group migration is unlikely to be an issue either - CD2\user1 is usually granted resource access through membership of a group on CD1.

Then I tried to build this XML file using python script and it was giving me the exact file that I wanted without any problem. But when I tried to run this and send it to Hudson, I was getting the error - "No module named dom.minidom" . I checked again by executing in Python IDLE and it ws working fine but when I tried to send it again, I was getting the same error.. plz help..

• Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start?   The latest update of Windows Live Messenger is an msp added to the package. I want to patch a msp into an msi. (To get the msp and msi's I did the following Use resource hacker to open up wlsetup-all.exe In the left hand tree browse to PACKAGE Right click PACKAGE, save PACKAGE resources Save to a new temp folder Eg. D:\temp\package.rc This will output a whole lot of .bin files These are just cab files so we need to do a mass rename “ren *.bin *.cab” Once done select all cab files and extract to a new sub folder \extracted In \extracted you will see all the msi, msp and 7z files you need) I try to apply the msp directly with no result msiexec /p messenger.msp /a messenger.msi I also try doing a admin install with nothing being extracted.

• WinUSB application or User-Mode Driver as a filter driver for USB Analysis/Sniffer/Trending

  A question to maybe some who have worked extensively with WinUSB APIs or use mode USB drivers - Does anyone know if the WinUSB API or a user mode driver can be used as a passive observer of USB connections, capturing notification of interrupts, control requests, data transfers...etc without interfering with other applications (such as iTunes) which would obviously require concurrent access to the device at the same time my application is monitoring the connection and displaying data on it? Or do you pretty much have to write a kernel-mode filter driver and inject yourself in the USB stack in order to make that happen? In the past, there have been a few credible options (libusb-win32 and usbsnoop to be specific) though both are built around the old DDK, not the Windows Driver Foundation, and are not really supported on a regular basis any more. I'm hesitant to build something significant around them, as a result.

• Installing Domain Controller on Hyper-V Host

  Given a resource limited setup consisting of 2 host machines (HyperV-01 and HyperV-02), is it OK to put the domain controllers in parent partition, instead of their own VM? The main reason is that if the DCs go into a child partition, starting from cold on both machines could lead to a bit of an issue, as there'd be no DCs around until well after both parents have booted. I'm guessing this might cause undesirable effects. Am I correct to be worried about joining the host systems to a domain that's only on VMs? The biggest drawback I've heard so far is that if AD gets heavily used, its resources could cut into HyperV's. I'm not concerned about that for this deployment. Any other suggestions? (Besides finding a 3rd machine and running AD on it.)
