• Script language native extensions - avoiding name collisions and cluttering others' namespace

  I have developed a small scripting language and I've just started writing the very first native library bindings. This is practically the first time I'm writing a native extension to a script language, so I've run into a conceptual issue. I'd like to write glue code for popular libraries so that they can be used from this language, and because of the design of the engine I've written, this is achieved using an array of C structs describing the function name visible by the virtual machine, along with a function pointer. Thus, a native binding is really just a global array variable, and now I must obviously give it a (preferably good) name. In C, it's idiomatic to put one's own functions in a "namespace" by prepending a custom prefix to function names, as in myscript_parse_source() or myscript_run_bytecode(). The custom name shall ideally describe the name of the library which it is part of. Here arises the confusion. Let's say I'm writing a binding for libcURL. In this case, it seems reasonable to call my extension library curl_myscript_binding, like this: MYSCRIPT_API const MyScriptExtFunc curl_myscript_lib[10]; But now this collides with the curl namespace. (I have even thought about calling it curlmyscript_lib but unfortunately, libcURL does not exclusively use the curl_ prefix -- the public APIs contain macros like CURLCODE_* and CURLOPT_*, so I assume this would clutter the namespace as well.) Another option would be to declare it as myscript_curl_lib, but that's good only as long as I'm the only one who writes bindings (since I know what I am doing with my namespace). As soon as other contributors start to add their own native bindings, they now clutter the myscript namespace. (I've done some research, and it seems that for example the Perl cURL binding follows this pattern. Not sure what I should think about that...) So how do you suggest I name my variables? Are there any general guidelines that should be followed?

• How to keep your third party libraries up to date?

  Let's say that I have a project that depends on 10 libraries, and within my project's trunk I'm free to use any versions of those libraries. So I start with the most recent versions. Then, each of those libraries gets an update once a month (on average). Now, keeping my trunk completely up to date would require updating a library reference every three days. This is obviously too much. Even though usually version 1.2.3 is a drop-in replacement for version 1.2.2, you never know without testing. Unit tests aren't enough; if it's a DB / file engine, you have to ensure that it works properly with files that were created with older versions, and maybe vice versa. If it has something to do with GUI, you have to visually inspect everything. And so on. How do you handle this? Some possible approaches: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stay with your current version of the library as long as you don't notice anything wrong with it when used in your application, no matter how often the library vendor publishes updates. Small incremental changes are just waste. Update frequently in order to keep change small. Since you'll have to update some day in any case, it's better to update often so that you notice any problems early when they're easy to fix, instead of jumping over several versions and letting potential problems to accumulate. Something in between. Is there a sweet spot?

  Trying to install Vanilla 2 locally using MAMP i got the error: "You must have the MySQL driver for PDO enabled in order for Vanilla to connect to your database". When I check phpinfo() I see: --with-pdo-mysql=shared,/Applications/MAMP/Library --with-pdo-pgsql=shared,/Applications/MAMP/Library/pg When I go and check out those paths I find the files: libpq.5.dylib libpq.dylib libpq.5.2.dylib When I check my php.ini file I see: ; Extensions extension=pdo_mysql.so In php.ini the path to the extension dir is correct (checked it manually): extension_dir = "/Applications/MAMP/bin/php5.3/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20090626/" In this folder I find the file: pdo_mysql.so phpinfo() gives me two sections: PDO PDO drivers: sqlite, sqlite2 and pdo_sqlite SQLite Library: 3.6.22 So everything seems to be fine, but can't get the PDO MySQL driver working :(

  I'm trying implement A* Start path finding in my games(which are written with JavaScript, HTML5 Canvas). And with this library, I'm trying write a simple test, but stuck with one problem. I'm now done when in HTML5 canvas screen click with mouse show path until my mouse.x and mouse.y. I've tried: 'http://pastebin.com/nVW3mhUM But with this code my player is not beung drawn.(When I run the code, player.x and player.y are equals to 0 and when I click with the mouse I get the path player blink and disappear) Maybe anyone know how to solve this problem? And I'm very very very sorry for my bad English language. :)

  I'm working with Hosted SharePoint 2007 with Forms Server. I need to allow client access to submit HTML forms designed in Infopath. Problem is, I need to make sure the clients don't see the library. There is sensitive data that will be on these forms. I also need to have a repeated library that is based on the Internal Admin records and requirements. Outside of making a seperate library per customer, does anyone have any suggestions? My Goal: 1: Customers enter their requests through a link or provided page 2: Internally address the requests and perform required arrangements, add billing and payment fields 3: Have SharePoint metrics, reports, etc... based on the provided intormation and status.   Follow these simple guidelines to make collaboration using SharePoint easier:1. File Name:While it is allowed to use spaces in your filename (and maybe it seems even logical to do so), don’t use them if your file will end up (or is born on) SharePoint. When you use the “download a copy” functionality, SharePoint will replace the spaces with an “_”. This might (will) result in inconsistency when you upload the “same” file again, since SharePoint will see this as a different file (since the filename is different). I recommend using a filename with Capitalization style naming guideline. For instance: the document “Overall governance model.docx” would be named “OverallGovernanceModel.docx”Use the TITLE field in the office applications to give your document a title (and subtitle and keywords, .) The title column can be used in a view in a library. You can get to the document properties by clicking on 'Office Button/Prepare/Properties'. (Office 2007). This is metadata that is stored with the document, and will remain in the document (even if you exchange this document via e-mail, via an external hard drive). The filename cannot be longer than 128 characters. (and that is IMHO far beyond reasonable) You cannot use any of these characters: ” # % & * : < > ? \ / { | } ~ 2. Versioning:SharePoint has a built-in versioning system. You can work with major (published) versions, and minor (draft) versions. Of each of these two document types, you can store a numbers of versions that are kept. Watch out, each version is saved, not only the delta between 2 versions, and this counts to your Site Collection Quota. (Example: you have a Word document with a size of 2 MB. When you keep 5 Drafts this will result in storing (and consuming) 10 MB.So, don’t call your document “NewUserAccountProcessDRAFTv1.docx”, but “NewUserAccountProcess.docx” and use versioning setting in your library.You can enable views on your library to display the version number.You can enable the version number to be displayed in a Word document.3.   We are using some open source libraries in our projects. Sometimes there are some issues found in some of them (most likely library bugs, but it may also be a wrong usage from our side, especially when sometimes documentation is not exactly 100 % complete). As the libraries are often quite complex, debugging them to pinpoint the source of the problem is sometimes quite hard. Can you help me to summarize what other options are there and how to exactly proceed with them? I have just recently hit some strange problems when using TCMalloc (Google scalable memory allocator) on Windows, so I would most welcome answers which would apply to this particular library, but more general answers are good as well. 1) Ask the maintainer/owner of the project for assistance. How can this be done? 2) Hire someone to identify and fix the issue. How to do this? How can I find someone with enough expertise in some particular library? ... any other options?

  I am new to a lot of server configurations and options. I want to add extra php libraries/extensions to my server. Where do I add them? (I am on a CENTOS 6.5 VPS) For example, I want to add the phpseclib php extension: Their website instructions are minimum: Usage This library is written using the same conventions that libraries in the PHP Extension and Application Repository (PEAR) used to be written in (current requirements break PHP4 compatibility). Should I added it under? usr/local/lib ? usr/local/lib/php ? usr/local/lib/php/pear ? Or can I add it under public_html? Also, my VPS has several users under /home/.. is that away to make the library available for only one user?

• Announcing Hackathon for Social Developers

  Continuing our Social Developer theme, we're excited to announce a week long hackathon put on by the Oracle Social Developer Lab (OSDL). The event starts at JavaOne Oct 2nd and runs through Oct 9th. A winner will be announced and profiled in the following issue of Java Magazine. What's it about?The OSDL is on a mission to make social development easier for the Java community. You may have noticed the biggest social networks have created tools for Ruby, PHP, and other languages, but not as much for Java. We've decided to help fill the gap with a SocialLink social publishing library. You can learn more about it on Java.net. We're also interested in promoting other tools that facilitate social development such as DaliCore Framework.  For our hack, you've got one week to leverage our library and/or DailCore to create a social app. The only rules are it must be a new application, and it must leverage one or both of these tools.  How to submit Create a project that uses either the SocialLink library or the DaliCore Framework to read or publish social data. 1. Upload your hack to a new project on java.net 2. Submit the URL to your java.net project through the project submission form on the Oracle Social Developer Community Facebook page. Only projects that have been submitted to the Oracle Social Developer Community will be reviewed.  In addition to the review process, we'll be adding some projects to the SocialLink project as a "sibling" project. • Encapsulate standard C functions?

  While studying the C programming language and learning safe practices, I'm inclined to write a layer of functionality over several parts of the standard library. This would serve two purposes: I could use standard parts of the language in ways that feel more familiar or rational to me, and I could easily replace that functionality with my own, if I needed to. I could benefit from this, but should I do it? As an example, we can consider memory management. If I've written malloc() into the constructors of each of my objects, then decide that I need to handle memory allocation on my own, I have to edit the constructor associated with every object. By referencing my own function, I can change the contents of that function without writing a new constructors. It seems obvious that I should do this, but I'm used to Python. I'm extremely comfortable in that environment and have no problem linking to any part of the standard library from any part of my program because I know I will almost certainly leave that relationship untouched for the life of the project. The situation I'm running into with C feels like I'm trying to hide the language from myself. Will writing a layer of functionality over the C standard library help me in learning the language and developing a codebase, or will it stifle my understanding going forward?

• How do you plan your asynchronous code?

  I created a library that is a invoker for a web service somewhere else. The library exposes asynchronous methods, since web service calls are a good candidate for that matter. At the beginning everything was just fine, I had methods with easy to understand operations in a CRUD fashion, since the library is a kind of repository. But then business logic started to become complex, and some of the procedures involves the chaining of many of these asynchronous operations, sometimes with different paths depending on the result value, etc.. etc.. Suddenly, everything is very messy, to stop the execution in a break point it is not very helpful, to find out what is going on or where in the process timeline have you stopped become a pain... Development becomes less quick, less agile, and to catch those bugs that happens once in a 1000 times becomes a hell. From the technical point, a repository that exposes asynchronous methods looked like a good idea, because some persistence layers could have delays, and you can use the async approach to do the most of your hardware. But from the functional point of view, things became very complex, and considering those procedures where a dozen of different calls were needed... I don't know the real value of the improvement. After read about TPL for a while, it looked like a good idea for managing tasks, but in the moment you have to combine them and start to reuse existing functionality, things become very messy. I have had a good experience using it for very concrete scenarios, but bad experience using them broadly. How do you work asynchronously? Do you use it always? Or just for long running processes? • Ubuntu Software Centre is gone! How can I get it back?

  Right. I am having MAJOR issues. (It would be much appreciated if you would solve them for me! Check my profile for open questions...) Following an answerer... who sorry to say... didn't give a great answer because it was just a graphical way of doing what I had already done - suggested I purge a library. Turns out that library controlled the Advanced Packaging Tool (apt), Ubuntu Software Centre and the repositories. Not a great tool to mess with. While trying to purge the library, it came up with 'Removing MyUnity.. Removing x... Removing x... Removing Ubuntu Software Centre... Removing X... Removing apt..." I quickly recognized and force shut-down my system. But I guess it was too late. So... well, plainly put - how do I get it back?!

• What is the simplest way for a slippy SVG visualization?

  I have a big SVG file representing a complicated graph with hundreds of points. I want to represent this in a web page. My idea was that I could make it like Google Maps represent their maps, in those slippy, dragable, moveable maps. I'am looking for an easy and fast JavaScript library which could do the work. What I need for my "map" is the drag/move, zoom ability, and some way to click on the points of the picture, which makes a little information apear about that point, like Google maps markers. I'am looking for a free/open source library. I saw some solutions but I'am uncertain about them, and none of them seemed to be perfet: Polymaps - I love the technique it uses, but I don't know much about this library. Leaflet - I love the simplicity of it, but I dont know how could I apply it for my SVG. Raphael - I heard the awesomeness of this, but It seemed a lots of work to do this task. What would be the best/easiest solution for my problem, and what is your opinion aboute the above libraries?

• Trying to launch old game using wine

  I'm using wine 1.5.11 on Archlinux, and I try to launch this old game : http://www.cnetfrance.fr/telecharger/waterboy-11006056s.htm?download=1 The problem is that I always get a "Run-time error '13' : Type mismatch" when I try to launch it.
