  • GPG error occurs while using "deb file:/local-path-to-repo ..." in /etc/apt/sources.list

    I need to install packages within non-internet connection environment. My plan is to download dist structure from Internet and then add file path to /etc/apt/sources.list. So I download related structure includes ubunt/dists/precise, precise-backports, precise-proposed, precise-security, precise-updates from a ftp mirror server. And then I remove original source and add the following to my /etc/apt/sources.list. deb file:path-to-local-ubuntu-directory/ precise main restricted multiverse universe deb-src file:path-to-local-ubuntu-directory/ precise main restricted multiverse universe Then I got GPG error as following after apt-get update. root@openstack:/~# apt-get update Ign file: precise InRelease Get:1 file: precise Release.gpg [198 B] Get:2 file: precise Release [50.1 kB] Ign file: precise Release Get:3 file: precise/main TranslationIndex [3,761 B] Get:4 file: precise/multiverse TranslationIndex [2,716 B] Get:5 file: precise/restricted TranslationIndex [2,636 B] Get:6 file: precise/universe TranslationIndex [2,965 B] Reading package lists...   • How to R/W hard disk when CPU is in Protect Mode?

    I am doing some OS experiment. Until now, all my code utilized the real mode BIOS interrupt to manipulate hard disk and floppy. But once my code enabled the Protect Mode of the CPU, all the real mode BIOS interrupt service routine won't be available. How could I R/W the hard disk and floppy? I have a feeling that I need to do some hardware drivers now. Am I right? Is this why an OS is so difficult to develop? I know that hardwares are all controlled by reading from and writing to certain control or data registers. For example, I know that the Command Block Registers of hard disk range from 0x1F0 to 0x1F7. But I am wondering whether the register addresses of so many different hardwares are the same on the PC platform? Or do I have to detect that before using them? How to detect them?? For any responses I present my deep appreciation.

  • What is good practice for writing web applications that control daemons (and their config files)

    Can someone suggest some basic advice on dealing with web applications that interact with configuration files like httpd.conf, bind zone files, etc. I understand that it's bad practice, in fact very dangerous to allow arbitrary execution of code without fully validating it and so on. But say you are tasked to write a small app that allows one to add vhosts to an apache configuration. Do you have your code execute with full privileges, do you write future variables into a database and have a cron job (with full privileges) execute a script that pulls the vars from the database and throws them into a template config file, etc. Some thoughts & contributions on this issue would be appreciated. tl;dr - how can you securely write a web app to update/create entries in a config file like apache's httpd.conf, etc.

    I have made a Java Swing application. Now I would like to make it a Client-Server application. All clients should be notified when data on the server is changed, so I'm not looking for a Web Service. The Client-Server application will be run on a single LAN, it's a business application. The Server will contain a database, JavaDB. What technology and library is easiest to start with? Should I implement it from scratch using Sockets, or should I use Java RMI, or maybe JMS? Or are there other alternatives that are easier to start with? And is there any server library that I should use? Is Jetty an alternative?

  • Using Visual Studio 2010 Express to create a surface I can draw to

    I'm coming from a Java background and trying to port a simple version of Conway's Game of Life that I wrote to C# in order to learn the language. In Java, I drew my output by inheriting from JComponent and overriding paint(). My new canvas class then had an instance of the simulation's backend which it could read/manipulate. I was then able to get the WYSIWYG GUI editor (Matisse, from NetBeans) to allow me to visually place the canvas. In C#, I've gathered that I need to override OnPaint() to draw things, which (as far as I know) requires me to inherit from something (I chose Panel). I can't figure out how to get the Windows forms editor to let me place my custom class. I'm also uncertain about where in the generated code I need to place my class. How can I do this, and is putting all my drawing code into a subclass really how I should be going about this? The lack of easy answers on Google suggests I'm missing something important here. If anyone wants to suggest a method for doing this in WPF as well, I'm curious to hear it. Thanks

  • Where does memory dynamically allocated reside?

    Hello everyone: We know that malloc() and new operation allocate memory from heap dynamically, but where does heap reside? Does each process have its own private heap in the namespace for dynamic allocation or the OS have a global one shared by all the processes. What's more, I read from a textbook that once memory leak occurs, the missing memory cannot be reused until next time we restart our computer. Is this thesis right?     I'm trying to rescale uploaded jpeg in asp.net So I go: Image original = Image.FromStream(myPostedFile.InputStream); int w=original.Width, h=original.Height; using(Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(original)) { g.ScaleTransform(0.5f, 0.5f); ... // e.g. using (Bitmap done = new Bitmap(w, h, g)) { done.Save( Server.MapPath(saveas), ImageFormat.Jpeg ); //saves blank black, though with correct width and height } } this saves a virgin black jpeg whatever file i give it.     I am trying to find out how long does it take each thread timeslice (quantum) in Windows but the only information that I found out is about the clock ticks being from 15 to 20ms or 20-30ms.   • Using git (or some other VCS) at your company

    Some friends of mine and I were talking recently about version control, and how they were using VSS at their jobs, and were probably going to be moving off of that soon. One of them said that his company will likely be going with Team Foundation Server. Eventually, the conversation did get around to talking about some of the open source VCSes out there, including git and SVN. None of us really knew about any companies that use either of these internally, although we imagined that a number of them did so for SVN, but we weren't too sure about git. I brought up Google and Android using it, but my friend figured that's only for the public facing source code, and that they may use something different for internal projects. Apparently it's more than just SCM that makes TFS so intriguing: Microsoft Sales people and support (although my friend did point out somethings to his managers that he thought might be misleading on MS' part) Integration of things beyond SCM, including project management (I'm just finding out that there are geared towards the same things for git) Again, it's Microsoft, and the transition from VSS to TFS seems logical (or does it?) I'm not much of a fan of SVN, so I didn't really bring it up much, but I am curious about whether or not git is used at your company for internal projects. Have you thought about it, and decided against it? Any reason why?

  • Designing a table to store EXIF data

    I'm looking to get the best performance out of querying a table containing EXIF data. The queries in question will only search the EXIF data for the specified strings and return the row index on a match. With that said, would it better to store the EXIF data in a table with separate columns for each of the tags, or would storing all of the tags in a single column as one long delimited string suit me just as well? There are around 115 EXIF tags I'll be storing, and each record would be around 1500 to 2000 chars in length if concatenated into a single string.

Is ISupportInitialize ONLY used during construction/"initial" initialization... or can it be used later when you want to add new child controls to an existing parent control?     It's no secret that application logs can go well beyond the limits of naive log viewers, and the desired viewer functionality (say, filtering the log based on a condition, or highlighting particular message types, or splitting it into sublogs based on a field value, or merging several logs based on a time axis, or bookmarking etc.) is beyond the abilities of large-file text viewers. I wonder: Whether decent specialized applications exist (I haven't found any) What functionality might one expect from such an application? (I'm asking because my student is writing such an application, and the functionality above has already been implemented to a certain extent of usability)

    I'm porting a small academic OS from TriCore to ARM Cortex (Thumb-2 instruction set). For the scheduler to work, I sometimes need to JUMP directly to another function without modifying the stack nor the link register. On TriCore (or, rather, on tricore-g++), this wrapper template (for any three-argument-function) works: template< class A1, class A2, class A3 > inline void __attribute__((always_inline)) JUMP3( void (*func)( A1, A2, A3), A1 a1, A2 a2, A3 a3 ) { typedef void (* __attribute__((interrupt_handler)) Jump3)( A1, A2, A3); ( (Jump3)func )( a1, a2, a3 ); } //example for using the template: JUMP3( superDispatch, this, me, next ); This would generate the assembler instruction J (a.k.a. JUMP) instead of CALL, leaving the stack and CSAs unchanged when jumping to the (otherwise normal) C++ function superDispatch(SchedulerImplementation* obj, Task::Id from, Task::Id to). Now I need an equivalent behaviour on ARM Cortex (or, rather, for arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++), i.e. generate a B (a.k.a. BRANCH) instruction instead of BLX (a.k.a. BRANCH with link and exchange). But there is no interrupt_handler attribute for arm-g++ and I could not find any equivalent attribute. So I tried to resort to asm volatile and writing the asm code directly: template< class A1, class A2, class A3 > inline void __attribute__((always_inline)) JUMP3( void (*func)( A1, A2, A3), A1 a1, A2 a2, A3 a3 ) { asm volatile ( "mov.w r0, %1;" "mov.w r1, %2;" "mov.w r2, %3;" "b %0;" : : "r"(func), "r"(a1), "r"(a2), "r"(a3) : "r0", "r1", "r2" ); } So far, so good, in my theory, at least. Thumb-2 requires function arguments to be passed in the registers, i.e. r0..r2 in this case, so it should work. But then the linker dies with undefined reference to `r6' on the closing bracket of the asm statement ... and I don't know what to make of it. OK, I'm not the expert in C++, and the asm syntax is not very straightforward... so has anybody got a hint for me? A hint to the correct __attribute__ for arm-g++ would be one way, a hint to fix the asm code would be another. Another way maybe would be to tell the compiler that a1..a3 should already be in the registers r0..r2 when the asm statement is entered (I looked into that a bit, but did not find any hint).

  • Merging all changesets associated with a WorkItem in Team Foundation Server

    We're trailing the use of the built in bug tracking, and have written some integration into our helpdesk software that allows for escalation via workitems. One thing I haven't found out how to do, is to merge all changes associated with a work item (say to go from dev branch to main) - I appreciate you can double click on a changeset in the merge dialog to view if it is associated with a workitem, and also that I can select individual changesets, and groups of adjacent changesets; but there doesn't appear to be any way to merge changes by workitem?
