Wow! That’s an amazing support to Zukergerg from his employees though stock market and share holders are not with him. Coincidently Facebook is also rated as the best company to work by Glassdoor in a recent survey.   • SQL Server 2008 is not accessible from Windows Server 2008 ?

    Hi, I have successfully configured Windows Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 with SQL Server 2008 Enterprise SP2 all 64 bit, however when I tried to access this particular SQL Server 2008 DB instance from another SQL Server 2008 SSMS in another Windows Server 2008 it failed ? what I did is to disabled the IPv6 IP address using the regedit but still the problem hasn't been fixed even after restart ? I have enabled the named piped as well but still no luck ? any help please ? Here's the error message: " A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.   • SQL Server Instancing: Should I use multiple instances or databases?

    I have a reasonable server connected to a SAN which will be running SQL servers for multiples of the same application. There are no security issues with one application being able to read anothers database. We are unfortunately in 32 bit windows as well. I'm of the opinion that it would be better to use one instance on the server, enable AWE so that the server instance can use almost all of the ram we have and then run each of the databases in the one instance. However I've been overruled by the gods of the IT department on this one, so I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on this. From a performance point of view, am I incorrect that one instance of SQL is better than two? I know that we could do some failover stuff, but doing that on one blade only seems like overkill to me..

    More than once I have come across the issue where we have had a problem using an X509Cert from the certificate store.  Everything is configured properly in the certificate store but when we attempt to create the signature we end up with a cryptographic exception for no apparent reason.   • How to either completely remove SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation or repair it?

    I've installed MSSQL server correctly, then I took some wrong turns and I'm now left in a pretty undesirable state. I wanted to change the server instance to another drive, so I uninstalled SQL server and all of it's features from the Programs and Features control panel. Now when I tried to install a new instance, I got a few errors, but it still installed most of them: Then I tried to run a repair, which I figured would fix things, but it throws an exception about not being able to read something from the CD (tried more than once always the same exception) Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file R:\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\SSCERuntime_x86-enu.msi , and it fails to repair a few of the features: And I don't have the server instance installed either. So I'm left with no MSSQLMS, no server instance, and no happiness. What would be the best course of action here?

  • Static classes and/or singletons -- How many does it take to become a code smell?

    In my projects I use quite a lot of static classes. These are usually classes that naturally seem to fit into a single-instance type of thing. Many times I use static classes and recently I've started using some singletons. How many of these does it take to become a code smell? For instance, in my recent project which has a lot of static classes is an Authentication library for ASP.Net. I use a static class for a helper class that fixes ASP.Net error codes so it can be used like CustomErrorsFixer.Fix(Context); Or my authentication class itself is a static class //in global.asax's begin_application Authentication.SomeState="blah"; Authentication.SomeOption=true; //etc //in global.asax's begin_request Authentication.Authenticate(); When are static or singleton classes bad to use? Am I doing it wrong, or am I just in a project that by definition has very little per-instance state associated with it?   • Allocating Entities within an Entity System

    I'm quite unsure how I should allocate/resemble my entities within my entity system. I have various options, but most of them seem to have cons associated with them. In all cases entities are resembled by an ID (integer), and possibly has a wrapper class associated with it. This wrapper class has methods to add/remove components to/from the entity. Before I mention the options, here is the basic structure of my entity system: Entity An object that describes an object within the game Component Used to store data for the entity System Contains entities with specific components Used to update entities with specific components World Contains entities and systems for the entity system Can create/destroy entites and have systems added/removed from/to it Here are my options, that I have thought of: Option 1: Do not store the Entity wrapper classes, and just store the next ID/deleted IDs. In other words, entities will be returned by value, like so: Entity entity = world.createEntity(); This is much like entityx, except I see some flaws in this design. Cons There can be duplicate entity wrapper classes (as the copy-ctor has to be implemented, and systems need to contain entities) If an Entity is destroyed, the duplicate entity wrapper classes will not have an updated value Option 2: Store the entity wrapper classes within an object pool. i.e. Entities will be return by pointer/reference, like so: Entity& e = world.createEntity(); Cons If there is duplicate entities, then when an entity is destroyed, the same entity object may be re-used to allocate another entity. Option 3: Use raw IDs, and forget about the wrapper entity classes. The downfall to this, I think, is the syntax that will be required for it. I'm thinking about doing thisas it seems the most simple & easy to implement it. I'm quite unsure about it, because of the syntax. i.e. To add a component with this design, it would look like: Entity e = world.createEntity(); world.addComponent<Position>(e, 0, 3); As apposed to this: Entity e = world.createEntity(); e.addComponent<Position>(0, 3); Cons Syntax Duplicate IDs

  • Restore single users Exchange 2003 mailbox from backup

    I take weekly backups of exchange in full. I also take complete weekly backups of the entire server. It is a Server 2003 R2 with AD and Exchange 2003 all on one box. One users inbox has disappeared. She has 19000+ junk items now. It is possible the inbox got mixed into the junk. Regardless it is such a huge mess she is not going to go through all of that.... I want to restore he mailbox from the backup. I followed this MS KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823176 I had to use Method 3. I have a VM of Server 2003 R2 with exchange but I am having failures on the restore from NT backup. The backup log just states to check the application log.... Application log points to backup log... Only info Is failed to restore Only thing different is the computer name... The only error I can find is in the Application log. Information Store Database not found All others just say that the backup failed. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. UPDATE I have successfully proven I can restore the DB into a recovery storage group in my VM Unfortunately due to the actual account being on a different store I am unable to do the recovery... Error is The attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer has failed. The MAPI provider failed. Microsoft Exchange Server Information Store ID no: 8004011d-0512-00000000 Two questions QUESTION 1 Should I repeat my steps on the production exchange server in the recover storage group? then merge into her original account? I am just concerned with doing recovery like that on the live server.... QUESTION 2 Is there any way I can extract her .PST from my recovery VM and then import into her outlook? On the Recovery VM: I restored the raw DB from my full backup repaired it with ESEUTIL then mounted in the recovery store. Was thinking I could just repeat and mount in the main store on the VM? Thanks for the suggestions.

  • Purpose of "new" keyword

    The new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# creates a new instance of a class. This syntax seems to have been inherited from C++, where new is used specifically to allocate a new instance of a class on the heap, and return a pointer to the new instance. In C++, this is not the only way to construct an object. You can also construct an object on the stack, without using new - and in fact, this way of constructing objects is much more common in C++. So, coming from a C++ background, the new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# seemed natural and obvious to me. Then I started to learn Python, which doesn't have the new keyword. In Python, an instance is constructed simply by calling the constructor, like: f = Foo() At first, this seemed a bit off to me, until it occurred to me that there's no reason for Python to have new, because everything is an object so there's no need to disambiguate between various constructor syntaxes. But then I thought - what's really the point of new in Java? Why should we say Object o = new Object();? Why not just Object o = Object();? In C++ there's definitely a need for new, since we need to distinguish between allocating on the heap and allocating on the stack, but in Java all objects are constructed on the heap, so why even have the new keyword? The same question could be asked for Javascript. In C#, which I'm much less familiar with, I think new may have some purpose in terms of distinguishing between object types and value types, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it seems to me that many languages which came after C++ simply "inherited" the new keyword - without really needing it. It's almost like a vestigial keyword. We don't seem to need it for any reason, and yet it's there. Question: Am I correct about this? Or is there some compelling reason that new needs to be in C++-inspired memory-managed languages like Java, Javascript and C#?

  • Are there keylogger viruses that affect Ubuntu?

    I just within the last few hours had my Amazon and Gmail accounts hijacked. Purchases were made through my Amazon account that I didn't authorize...in fact, I wasn't even in my room. According to Gmail, the IP address of when I got hijacked was where I live. Enough rambling, here's my question: are there keylogger viruses on Ubuntu? I am not sure if either i accidentally let my password out there somewhere, or maybe I have a keylogger. I'm currently installing ClamAV to scan for viruses. Any help would be absolutely appreciated.

  • How does a web browser save passwords?

    How do current web browsers (or mobile mail clients and any software in general) save user passwords? All answers about storing passwords say we should store only hashes, not the password themselves. But I'm having a hard time searching the web trying to find the best techniques to store passwords when we know we will need them in plain text later on — without storing them in plain text, without using a weak encryption (known key) and without asking the user for a master password. Any ideas?

    I am using Fedora 8 and Oracle 10g Express Edition. Every time I start my fedora I have to click on start database. How can I add startdb.sh to startup so that it automatically executes when Fedora starts?   • When to use Constants vs. Config Files to maintain Configuration

    I often fight with myself on whether to put certain keys in my web.config or in a Constants.cs class or something like this. For example if I wanted to store application specific keys for whatever the case may be..I could store it and grab it from my web config via custom keys or consume it by referencing a constant in my constants class. When would you want to use Constants over config keys? This question really applies to any language I think.
