• IIS Manager - Connect to Another Server (Win7 to Win2008 server)

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate. If I open up IIS Manager, I see a list of "connections" on the left hand side. In previous versions, I would be able to select an option to "connect to another server" or "connect to another machine", but there is no such option visible anywhere here. The only thing in the list is my local machine. Even in the address bar, if I manually type in the server location (\servername, even tried just servername), nothing happens (it just reverts back to my current local computer) The documentation at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc732466%28WS.10%29.aspx seems to imply the very same steps... but there is just no button or menu option anywhere to do this. Am I missing something? I'm not even seeing a grayed out menu option. EDIT: Under the "File" menu, I see 2 options: Save Connections (grayed out) Exit Under the "Connections" pane, I see 1 button, grayed out. When I hover the mouse, it simply says "Up", appears to be usable if I browse into an element in my local computers IIS settings If I right click inside the pane itself, I see Refresh Add website (to the current host) Start Stop Rename Switch to Content View UPDATE: I downloaded and installed the Remote Server Administration tools from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7D2F6AD7-656B-4313-A005-4E344E43997D&displaylang=en, and I enabled everything listed under "Remote Server Administration Tools" under "Turn Windows Features On or Off". • Firefox does not upgrade properly (infinite installation loop without success)

  I've been using Firefox for a long time but I have a problem with upgrading process now. As you know, Firefox automatically checks for the latest version and downloads it, and when it is ready to be installed it starts the installation process as usual. Last month, when I clicked on "OK, install v3.6.2", the process started but couldn't be finished properly. FF gave a message like that: "Installation cannot be completed, please restart Firefox to retry". When I restarted FF, the same thing happened, and the process entered in an infinite loop. I restarted my PC and clicked on FF icon, and again the installation process began and went into the infinite loop. My solution to this problem was to download FF 3.6.2 and manually install it after killing firefox.exe. Today, FF proposed me to install v3.6.3 and again the same problem occured. I manually downloaded FF 3.6.3 and installed it successfully. Anyone experiencing this problem? In case you want to know, I did not install any new addons in the last few months, and my FF operates without problems. I'm using Windows 7 Home Pro x64.

• What folders to encrypt with EFS on Windows 7 laptop?

  Since I've been using my laptop more as a laptop recently (carrying it around) I am now evaluating my strategy to protect confidential information in case it is stolen. Keep in mind that my laptop is 6 years old (Lenovo T61 with 8 GB or RAM, 2GHz dual core CPU). It runs Windows 7 fine but it is no speedy demon. It doesn't support AES instruction set. I've been using TrueCrypt volume mounted on demand for really important stuff like financial statements forever. Nothing else is encrypted. I just finished my evaluation of EFS, Bitlocker and took a closer look at TrueCrypt again. I've come to conclusion that boot partition encryption via Bitlocker or TrueCrypt is not worth the hassle. I may decide in the future to use Bitlocker or TrueCrypt to encrypt one of the data volumes but at this point I intend to use EFS to encrypt parts of my hard drive that contain data that I wouldn't want exposed. The purpose of this post is to get your feedback about what folders should be encrypted from the general point of view (of course everyone will have something specific in addition) Here is what I thought of so far (will update if I think of something else): 1) AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook - Outlook files 2) AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Profiles and AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles- Thunderbird profiles, not sure yet where exactly data is stored. 3) AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\djdsakdjh.default\bookmarkbackups - Firefox bookmark backup. Is there a separate location for "main" Firefox bookmark file? I haven't figured it out yet. 4) Bookmarks for Chrome (don't know where it's bookmarks are) and Internet Explorer ($Username\Favorites) - I don't really use them but why not to secure that as well. 5) Downloads\, My Documents\ and My Pictures\ folders I don't think I need to encrypt, say, latest service pack for Visual Studio. So I will probably create subfolder called "Secure" in all of these folders and set it to "Encrypted". Anything sensitive I will save in this folder. Any other suggestions? Again, this is from the point of view of your "regular office user".

• Mac OSX: which folders should ClamXav Sentry watch?

  I'm using ClamXav on my mac. I've read this, and I am aware of the whole macs-need-no-AV-but-they-do-anyway discussion. I guess that's why I would feel like a real ass if I somehow managed to compromise my system! So ClamXav has been downloaded and ClamXav Sentry set up to start on log-in, but it doesn't really do anything before you tell it to. Specifically, you have to tell it which folders to watch for virusses/vira so I'm wondering, where are good places to look? Currently it's been set up to look the following places: In the home folder: ~/Downloads ~/Library/Caches ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items ~/Library/Cookies ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins ~/Library/LaunchAgents In my system folder: /Library/Application Support /Library/Caches /Library/Contextual Menu Items /Library/Cookies /Library/Internet Plug-Ins /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/Startupitems Basically, this is 100% conjecture. All (most of) the folders have something to do with internet and things that start up automatically, so I'm guessing that's where vira go. But still, the qustion: Which folders should ClamXav Sentry watch, if any? FYI, I'm not using any mail app's, but please include that in your answer for anyone who might be interested. Cheers!

• Nvidia Linux Driver Huge Resolution

  I'm trying to setup a working CUDA SDK on my Linux Mint. I'm new to Linux and everything connected with it. So, I tried following some steps on how to install CUDA. Firstly, I downloaded a Linux driver from here: http://developer.nvidia.com/cuda/cuda-downloads version 295.41. After that, I barely found a way to run it. I did it like this: 1. typed in sudo init 1 in terminal and switched to root 2. typed service mdm stop 3. ran the *.run file downloaded from the link above Then it started installing the driver. It gave some warning messages, but I ignored it. After installation, I typed init 5 and it came back to GUI screen, BUT everything is huge. I restarted, still huge. My screen resolution is 640x480 on a 17 inch laptop monitor. I tried running Nvidia X Server Settings, but it says: "You do not appear to be using Nvidia X Driver. Please edit your X configuration file." I tried that. Nothing happened. I cant change the resolution because that Nvidia Settings thing gives no options. Then I googled some things, installing some packages - nothing. The biggest problem is I don't understand whats really going on. My laptop is a Samsung with i7 and Nvidia Gt 650M with optimus. I cant even install bumblebee, but that is something I will try if I manage to get my resolution to default. Please, help!

• ADSL to T1, Is it worth it for us?

  The company I work for has roughly 45-55 simultaneous users (local and remote/VPN) logged in at a given time. We currently subscribe to an ADSL connection but we have been experiencing slower upload/download speeds as our number of users increase. So, I have a few questions with regards to upgrading our connection to a t1 line. I am aware that the number of channels on a t1 line are much greater then that of our current ADSL connection, but I have heard that the number of active users on a t1 line should be no greater than ~30 for optimal performance. I would think this statement is dependent on what each user was using the connection for and could change depending on this variable. That being said, I have tried to break down how the line would be used in our organization based on our major departments: Sales (~60% of total users) - Everyday surfing, email, research, occasional streaming media Marketing (~15% of total users) - Heavy reliance on uploading/downloading, streaming media, file sharing Other (~25% of total users) - email, rare use of any connection intensive activities. I have considered keeping the ADSL for our local users and dedicating the t1 to our remote users (or vice versa) but the cost is significantly higher then what we had hoped for. All factors being equal (# of users, frequency of downloads/uploads from our current activities) Would you suspect a significant performance increase in making the transition to a t1 line from our current ADSL line? What are your thoughts or recommendations?

• URL sniffer/downloader

  Some websites have Flash content that plays music or videos. Most of the time they don't show you the URL of these music or videos, but for example, you can sniff a YouTube webpage and find the flv file that YouTube is actually requesting and playing. Right now I'm using Orbit Downloader, which has a feature called Grab++ that does just this; you start it, and then you refresh the page, and it shows you all files of certain types (image, audio, video) that the webpage requests, and then you can select one or more and download and it downloads them. But, I don't like Orbit, it installs plugins and has the whole download manager thing which I don't really want. What is a good alternative program? I'm not looking for websites like kickyoutube.com, I want a URL sniffer I guess. HTTPGuideDog used to be my Firefox add-on that did exactly this, but it hasn't been updated even to FF3 (and yes I know I can hack it to load anyway, I'm looking for something natively available preferably). I vaguely know of WireShark but last time I used it, I believe it captures individual packets, which is a little too fine-tuned for me. I just want to be able to see what's happening, and download something that the webpage downloaded. Oh, and I'm using Windows 7. Linux probably has some fancy command-line tool, but it just won't cut it for me. :-\ Edit: Oh, and something free please. Feel free to mention paid solutions though.

• Download JDK onto a remote server

  I want to get the latest JDK onto a server in a remote location. Downloading the JDK from Sun's website requires jumping through all kinds of hoops until you actually get the file. I'm not sure exactly if they use cookies or my IP address, but simply copying the file URL and trying wget on the server doesn't work. Googling for mirrors of the JDK, I could only find old versions. Right now I'm left with the option of downloading it into my computer, then uploading it to the server. This feels slow and stupid. Anyone got a better idea? EDIT: Thanks for all the replies. Just to clarify, as I'm writing this I'm rsyncing the 78MB file to my server. It should be done in about an hour, so it's not such a big deal. However, since this is not the first time I'm doing this, I was hoping for a better solution for next time. Solution: What I ended up doing was sudo aptitude install lynx-cur www-browser http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ From there it's mostly using the arrow and enter keys, and answering "Yes" to a lot of lynx security questions (about cookies and certificates). • Can I disable this Windows (XP) Security Warning?

  I recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP (I know I'll have to take the plunge and commit to Win8 "real soon, now", but I'm just not quite ready for the upheaval yet! :) I used to use WinRar (and later, when I got fed up with the "nag" messages, 7-Zip), but I haven't installed either of them in my new configuration, so I must be using the built-in XP facility when I open *.zip files. For years, I've been opening downloaded *.zip archives, and using "drag & drop" to copy to a File Explorer window open on the folder where I want the files to end up (usually, My Documents\Downloads). But now I find that when I "drop" the file(s), I get a pop-up Windows Security Warning saying Are you sure you want to copy or move files to this folder? You should only move or copy files from locations that you trust Can anyone explain why I'm getting this message, and is there any (reasonably easy, please! :) way to suppress it? Since I've already put the *.zip file on my computer, it seems a bit late to ask if I trust it. • Simple GET operation with JSON data in ADF Mobile

  Usecase: This sample uses a RESTful service which contains a GET method that fetches employee details for an employee with given employee ID along with other methods. The data is fetched in JSON format. This RESTful service is then invoked via ADF Mobile and the JSON data thus obtained is parsed and rendered in mobile in a table. Prerequisite: Download JDev build JDEVADF_11.1.2.4.0_GENERIC_130421.1600.6436.1 or higher with mobile support.  Steps: Run EmployeeService.java in JSONService.zip. This is a simple service with a method, getEmpById(id) that takes employee ID as parameter and produces employee details in JSON format. Copy the target URL generated on running this service. The target URL will be as shown below: http://127.0.0.1:7101/JSONService-Project1-context-root/jersey/project1 Now, let us invoke this service in our mobile application. For this, create an ADF Mobile application.  Name the application JSON_SearchByEmpID and finish the wizard. Now, let us create a connection to our service. To do this, we create a URL Connection. Invoke new gallery wizard on ApplicationController project.  Select URL Connection option. In the Create URL Connection window, enter connection name as ‘conn’. For URL endpoint, supply the URL you copied earlier on running the service. Remember to use your system IP instead of localhost. Test the connection and click OK. At this point, a connection to the REST service has been created. Since JSON data is not supported directly in WSDC wizard, we need to invoke the operation through Java code using RestServiceAdapter. For this, in the ApplicationController project, create a Java class called ‘EmployeeDC’. We will be creating DC from this class. At line 4, we are pointing to the connection ‘conn’ created previously. Since we want to invoke getEmpById method of the service, which is defined by the URL http://IP:7101/REST_Sanity_JSON-Project1-context-root/resources/project1/getById/{id} we are updating the request URI to point to this URI at line 9. inputEmpID is a variable that will hold the value input by the user for employee ID. This we will be creating in a while. As the method we are invoking is a GET operation and consumes json data, these properties are being set in lines 5 through 7. Finally, we are sending the request in line 13. In line 15, we use jsonHelper.fromJSON to convert received JSON data to a Java object. The required Java objects' structure is defined in class Employee.java whose structure is provided later. Since the response from our service is a simple response consisting of attributes like employee Id, name, design etc, we will just return this parsed response (line 16) and use it to create DC. As mentioned previously, we would like the user to input the employee ID for which he/she wants to perform search. So, in the same class, define a variable inputEmpID which will hold the value input by the user. Generate accessors for this variable. Lastly, we need to create Employee class. Employee class will define how we want to structure the JSON object received from the service. To design the Employee class, run the services’ method in the browser or via analyzer using path parameter as 1. This will give you the output JSON structure. Ours is a simple service that returns a JSONObject with a set of data. Hence, Employee class will just contain this set of data defined with the proper data types. Now, you can design the mobile page as usual and invoke the operation of the service. To design the page, go to ViewController project and locate adfmf-feature.xml. Create a new feature called ‘SearchFeature’ by clicking the plus icon. Go the content tab and add an amx page. Call it SearchPage.amx. Call it SearchPage.amx. Remove primary and secondary buttons as we don’t need them and rename the header. Drag and drop inputEmpID from the DC palette onto Panel Page in the structure pane as input text with label. Next, drop fetchEmpDetails method as an ADF button. For a change, let us display the output in a table component instead of the usual form. However, you will notice that if you drag and drop Employee onto the structure pane, there is no option for ADF Mobile Table. Hence, we will need to create the table on our own. To do this, let us first drop Employee as an ADF Read -Only form. This step is needed to get the required bindings. We will be deleting this form in a while. Now, from the Component palette, search for ‘Table Layout’. Drag and drop this below the command button.  Within the tablelayout, insert ‘Row Layout’ and ‘Cell Format’ components. Final table structure should be as shown below.   [PROBLEM] Hello everyone. I have a small issue here. We are trying to get our exchange accounts for students only ported over from an exchange server 2003 to the Microsoft cloud services known as live @ EDU. The problem we are having is that in order to do this we need to install 2 pieces of software 1: OLSync 2: Microsoft Identity Life cycle Manager "Download the Galsync.msi here" the "Here" link takes you to a page that needs a login for an admin account for live @ EDU. That part works. However once logged in it redirects to a page that states: https://connect.microsoft.com/site185/Downloads/DownloadDetails.aspx?DownloadID=26407 Page Not Found The content that you requested cannot be found or you do not have permission to view it.
