• Making Sure Which Partition to Choose with Linux Dual Boot?

  In the Linux Mint 12 LXDE the partitions are listed as nsd 1, 2, 3, 4, though I have a Windows 8 CP installation on one of the two partitions on the single hard drive. The space usage is differing in both system calculations, though still relateable. Where the partition is at around 20 GB usage in Windows 8 it will be at around 24 GB in the Linux installation menu. I am just wondering is there a certain way to choose the right partition? Also in the drop down menu regarding the boot loader, there are multiple options, which one would be the one to be chosen in this case? What about the system-reserve partition of Windows 7 (the one I am trying to overwrite)? What is happening with that?

  I am writing the documentation for our companies software developed with vs2012. I need to add xml examples to the summary of each class, due to xml instantiation of objects. We are using sandcastle to create the documentation (company choice), and I want to be able to review my xml comments without building the help file every time. Is there an application that anyone would recommend where I can view how the xml renders before I build the help file? • Why is Latex so big?

  On windows, MikTex comes in a DVD. It's several times bigger than a typical Linux distribution. This makes it impossible to carry Latex on a memory stick like I do with many other useful software. Why is it so big? I thought it was just a language or system, but I've never seen any programming language with gigabytes of libraries. It's just that there's a bad feeling when your Latex distribution takes up four gigabytes of space when you expect it to be more of, say, 200mb.

• Windows Server 2003 Hacked - Files Being Uploaded

  Blank directories are being created on my Windows Server 2003 virtual server with sub directories that are weird (for example: "88ÿ ÿ ÿÿþþ þþ13þ"). It looks like they are uploading bootlegged DVDs and pirated software. All of my bandwidth and file space is being eaten up. Could this be a shared permissions issue? Where should I look to further investigate this? My security permissions for the directory that is being hit are as followed: Administrators - ALL GRANTED IIS_WPG - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read Internet Guest - DENY SYSTEM - ALL GRANTED Users - Read & Execute, List Folder Contents, Read My Event Viewer is showing many Logon/Logoff with NO IP?

• Serverlocation move and how can I Move the files

  Hello together, I´ve a big problem. I have to move data from an old Webspace which is only accessibla by ftp. No we have a new root server which is accessible by ssh of course :-) No i Need to move all data from the old space but there is a lot of Gb of files. Is there a way to fetch all files directly from the old ftp to the storage and not over a third station (my local machine)? I´ve tried it with ftp but without success. I think I´ve used the wrong commands. Is there a way to etablish something like this including all files and directorys? Thank you in advance Bernhard

• Parallels 5: upgrade from Vista to Win 7: annoying deadlock

  What I have: Parallels 5, Vista installed. Trying to upgrade to Win 7. I have the Win7 .iso mounted as a DVD to my virtual machine. When I start the machine from this DVD, and attempt the upgrade, I'm told (paraphrased) "You booted from DVD. Don't do this. Reboot, then insert the DVD, commence the upgrade from there." But when I try that, the upgrade keeps failing because "There is not enough disk space". I've proven this is a red herring of an error message; the real problem is the installer can't find -any- disk drives. When I instead choose the "Advanced" install, and I am prompted to choose the disk drive, there aren't any to choose from. How do unblock this deadlock?

• Ubuntu server very slow out of the blue sky (Rails, passenger, nginx)

  I run Ubuntu server 8.04 on Linode with multiple Rails apps under Passenger + nginx. Today I've noticed it takes quite a lot of time to load a page (5-10 secs). And it's not only websites, ssh seems to be affected too. Having no clue why this may be happening, I started to check different things. I checked how the log files are rotated, I checked if there's enough free disk space and memory.   When I run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) on my work PC (running WinXP), it claims to see 778,520 K of WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Although I do check that field, the number never drops. I've manually scanned through all possible temp folders on the drive and don't see anyplace hiding 760 MB of temp files, which makes me wonder whether those files merely exist in some list (registry or INI) somewhere but don't actually exist on the drive. So, my questions are: 1. Where on the drive might those WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files be 2. Where does cleanmgr.exe look to determine how much disk space is used by WebClient/Publisher Temporary Files Thanks in advance.

• My (C:) drive changed from Basic to Dynamic, is this bad?

  I'm really worried here. My computer still runs, so I take this as a good sign, however let me explain my situation: I am trying to install Ubuntu Linux, and the installer was having problems, so I went back into the partitioning tool on my Windows 7 (after having successfully shrunken my C drive and created 55 GB unallocated space) and I attempted to create a new partition out of the 55 GB and make it a simple NTFS drive so that I could let the installer wipe it clean again and format it in whatever file system it prefers. Now, after googling it and running through the process I noticed that all of my drives, including the C drive and the one I just made changed from type "Basic" to type "Dynamic." What is a dynamic drive and should I be worried?

• Rsync backup - detect new directory and backup only from that directory

  New cpanel daily backup is creating separate directories for daily backup. This creates problem when I try to user rsync to do an offsite backup since I would like to rsync only latest data. E.g. On backup server I have directory "backup" and on server, from which we are pulling backups I get directories 2013-11-07, 2013-11-08 etc in backup directory. If I backup /backup directory on the server it will use allot more space so I would like to backup only latest directory in backup directory, eg 2013-11-08. Is there a way to detect latest directory in backup directory and pass that directory name to rsync for backup ?

  ftp supports the put "|..." "remote-file.name" command to pipe data to an ftp connection. Is there something similar available for sftp? In sftp i get the following error: sftp 'jmw@backupsrv:/uploads' sftp> put "| tar -cx /storage" "backup-2012-06-19--17-51.tgz" stat | tar -cv /storage: No such file or directory as above the sftp client doesn't obviously execute the command. i want to use the pipe command to directly redirect the file stream to sftp. (because there is not enough space left to create a backup file on the same disk before uploading it to sftp server.)

• Can many addon domains slow down cPanel or create problems?

  I actually resell hosting plans by using one single cPanel account and many addon domains under it. Basically for each new user I don't create a new cP account, but I simply create a new ADDON domain and give him the necessary space. I know in this way the final user won't be able to manage his emails and he won't be able to access all cPanel features, but that's ok. I know in my account I'm allowed to add unlimited addon domains, but adding many addon domains is there something that might happen that slows down cPanel or could create problems? Any suggestions you could give me about the way i'm using cPanel which might not be the usual way of using it. (As for instance: "be aware that mails from different addon domains under the same CP account could create many problems.", etc.) Thanks!

• Very large log files in IIS 7.x

  Hello, I had a site stop working today and when I RDP'd into the server I saw a warning about low disk space. The first thing I checked was the inetpub folder where the log files are stored and sure enough it was huge, 40 GB huge. I do clean the files monthly but what is causing a day's worth of logging on a medium activity site (www.vbdotnetforums.com) to create 300-500 MB log files? I do have everything being logged so my SmarterStats software gives me the most info, but are there specific things I should/can turn off that is causing the most growth in these log files? Also, sure would be nice if Microsoft someday had some sort of log file management such as deleting log files after they exceed a certain size (total), X days, etc. We all have to come up with some solution to delete the old ones manually. • Chrome Java Plugin not working after moving Java installation directory

  I recently moved all my Java installations from C:\Program Files\Java to D:\Java, as my C:\ partition only had a few MB of free space left and windows kept on bugging me about it. I also edited every registry entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft that pointed to the old directory to now point to the new one. Then changed the PATH variables and removed the old files, did a restart, and all Java applications work just fine. Yet, Chrome is the only application that seems to have a problem with what I did, as the Java Plugin isn't recognized any more. Are there any registry entires I may have missed? Maybe in the Chrome registry? How can I make this work again?

Some files were removed accidentally by placing unnecessary space this command: rm -r /usr/local <directory to be deleted> I know, that in most cases this directory is used by packages to place some part of their content. Is there any where to recover deleted files and directories? I suppose, that theoretically it should be possible. Some software can look through the list of installed packages, check presence of files in file system and recover or reinstall corrupted packages if their file are missing in /usr/local.

• Why does the Java VM process eat up more RAM then specified in -Xmx parameter?

  I have multiple servers running CentOS 5.4 and only one application running on Java VM. I've configured the Java VM with the following arguments: java -Xmx4500M -server -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC -XX:+CMSIncrementalMode -XX:NewSize=1024m -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true -Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote=true The machines I'm running the VM on has 6 GB RAM and no other applications running. After a while, the java process starts to hit the swap space really hard, I get this info out of the top command: 7658 root 25 0 11.7g 3.9g 4796 S 39.4 67.3 543:54.17 java On the other hand, if I connect via JConsole, it reports the Java VM has 2.6 GB used, 4.6 GB commited and 4.6 Gb max. java -version returns: java version "1.6.0_17" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_17-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.3-b01, mixed mode) Why is the Java VM expanding so much past it's allocated heap size? And where does that memory go, if it's not reported in JConsole?

Now I'm running out of space, and I'd like to clean up duplicate files. My idea was to md5sum every file on the drive, then look for duplicates, and diff the relevant files (just in case, haha). OS and T-Log - Raid 10 - (4)300GB DB - Raid 10 (6)600GB The hard drive space is not an issue as the databases are not that large.   Hi, after installig Ubuntu 10.04 Remix I can see two timer applets in the notification area. When I click on the first one, I can see the current date and the menues "Open Calendar", "Set Time and Date". When I click on the second one, I can see a small calendar of the current month and a small world map with my defined locations. I just want to have only one timer to safe some space in the notification area. How to disable one of the two applets? To click "Remove from Panel" isn't possible in the Remix edition!

• Mapped commands in VIM starting with a Comma

  In my .vimrc, I defined this line: map ,ps <Esc>:!ps<Space>-a<CR> The mapping is set (which I controlled via :verbose map ,ps while inside vim). There is nothing else mapped to the comma. However, if I type the command in command mode, nothing is displayed in the status bar, the comma is ignored, the p movement and the s insert are triggered. (I.e., VIM reacts, as if there was no command ,ps.) Is there any magic that I have overlooked in enabling comma-started mapped commands?
