• Getting Started with MySQL Cluster, Hands-on Lab, Next Saturday, MySQL Connect

  Hi!I'm speaking at MySQL Connect next Saturday, Sep. 29. My Session is a hands-on lab (HOL) on MySQL Cluster.If you are interested in familiarize a bit with MySQL Cluster this is definitely a session for you. I will start by briefly introducing MySQL Cluster and its architecture. Then I will guide you through the needed steps to install a local MySQL Cluster, connect to it (using the command line), monitor its logs, and safe shutdown it.We will hence have a chance to see which are the most common commands using in MySQL Cluster administration (e.g. Cluster backup) as well as the most common operations (e.g. online datanode add). Cluster's users and customers have the flexibility to choose whether they prefer to use a SQL or NoSQL approach to connect to MySQL Cluster, so, during the last part of the HOL, we will see how to connect to MySQL Cluster using the NoSQL NDB API. If there is enough time at the end, we will also compile and execute some simple Java programs that make use of Connector J to connect to the SQL Nodes of our Cluster. • Tale of an Encrypted SSIS Package in msdb and a Lost Password

    Yesterday a Developer at work asked for a copy of an SSIS package in Production so he could work on it (please, dear Reader – withhold judgment on Source Control – I know!). I logged on to the SSIS instance, and when I went to export the package… Oops. I didn’t have that password. The DBA who uploaded the package to Production is long gone; my fellow DBA had no idea either - and the Devs returned a cricket sound when queried. So I posed the obligatory question on #SQLHelp and a bunch of folks jumped in – some to help and some to make fun of me (thanks, @SQLSoldier @crummel4 @maryarcia and @sqljoe). I tried their suggestions to no avail…even ran some queries to see if I could figure out how to extract the package XML from the system tables in msdb:   SELECT CAST(CAST(p.packagedata AS varbinary(max)) AS varchar(max)) FROM msdb.dbo.sysssispackages p WHERE p.name = 'LePackage'   This just returned a bunch of XML with encrypted data on it:  I knew there was a job in SQL Agent scheduled to execute the package, and when I tried to look at details on the job step I got the following: Not very helpful. The password had to be saved somewhere, but where?? All of a sudden I remembered that there was a system table I hadn’t queried yet: SELECT sjs.command FROM msdb.dbo.sysjobs sj JOIN msdb.dbo.sysjobsteps sjs ON sj.job_id = sjs.job_id WHERE sj.name = 'Run LePackage' The result: “Well, that’s really secure”, I thought to myself.   The previous part in this blog should have made us aware, that many procedures are required to manage all these steps. To review your status let me ask you a question:What is your Customization Strategy?Your answer might be something like, 'customization strategy, well, we have standards and we let requirement documents approve'.Let me ask you another question:How long does it take to redeploy all your customizations into a fresh installation?In 90% of all installations the answer to this question would be: we can't!Although no one would have to do it (hopefully), just thinking about it and recognizing that we have today too many manual steps involved, different procedures and sometimes (undocumented) manual steps to complete a customization installation. And ... in general too many customizations.Why is working with customizations often so complicated and time consuming?Here are the key reasons as I have identified them in my projects:Customization standards defined, but not maintainedDifferent knowledge on developer side (results getting an individual developer touch)No need to automate deployment (not forced by client)Different documentation styles, not easy to hand over to someone elseDifferent development concepts, difficult for the maintenanceJust the minimum present for testing, often positive testing onlyDeviations from naming conventions accepted, although definedComplicated procedures, therefore sometimes partially ignoredAnd last but not least, hand made version control (still)If you would have to 'redeploy all your customizations' you would have to Follow all your own standards and best practiceTrack deviations and define corrective tasksAutomate as much as possible, minimize manual tasksDo not allow any change coming in without version controlUtilize products to support you in deploymentMinimize hand made scripts and extensive documentationReview regularly used techniques to guarantee that all are in line with the current release and also easy maintainableCreate solution libraries and force the team to contribute and reuseDefine quality activities and execute themDefine a procedure to release customizationsI know, it is easy to write down, but much harder to manage. • SSMS Tools Pack 1.9.3 is out!

  This release adds a great new feature and fixes a few bugs. The new feature called Window Content History saves the whole text in all all opened SQL windows every N minutes with the default being 30 minutes. This feature fixes the shortcoming of the Query Execution History which is saved only when the query is run. If you're working on a large script and never execute it, the existing Query Execution History wouldn't save it. By contrast the Window Content History saves everything in a .sql file so you can even open it in your SSMS. The Query Execution History and Window Content History files are correlated by the same directory and file name so when you search through the Query Execution History you get to see the whole saved Window Content History for that query. Because Window Content History saves data in simple searchable .sql files there isn't a special search editor built in. It is turned ON by default but despite the built in optimizations for space minimization, be careful to not let it fill your disk. You can see how it looks in the pictures in the feature list. The fixed bugs are: SSMS 2008 R2 slowness reported by few people. An object explorer context menu bug where it showed multiple SSMS Tools entries and showed wrong entries for a node. A datagrid bug in SQL snippets. Ability to read illegal XML characters from log files. Fixed the upper limit bug of a saved history text to 5 MB. A bug when searching through result sets prevents search. A bug with Text formatting erroring out for certain scripts. A bug with finding servers where it would return null even though servers existed. Run custom scripts objects had a bug where |SchemaName| didn't display the correct table schema for columns. This is fixed. Also |NodeName| and |ObjectName| values now show the same thing.   You can download the new version 1.9.3 here. Enjoy it!

  If you have large files in a content source that is being indexed by Sharepoint you might run into the following error message: “The file reached the maximum download limit. Check that the full text of the document can be meaningfully crawled.” This is usually caused because SharePoint’s MaxDownloadSize setting is set lower than the size of the file you are attempting to index. You can increase this value, restart the service then kick off a full crawl in order to fix this issue, but SharePoint 2007 and 2010 have different methods for accomplishing this task.   Sharepoint 2007 Open up the Registry editor and increase the MaxDownloadSize value to a number (in MB) higher than the largest file being indexed. You can find this at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager After you increase the size, cycle the search service and kick off a full crawl of the content source in question.   Sharepoint 2010 With SharePoint 2010 you can use PowerShell via the Sharepoint 2010 Console in order to change the MaxDownloadSize. • How to diagnose and fix Kernel Panic Fatal Machine Check error?

  I have got a new Samsung Series 7 laptop with dual boot setup for Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10. A fine machine comparable to a Macbook Pro. The Ubuntu installation was quite a hassle, but with the help of Boot Repair finally it seemed to work. Or so I thought. Windows 8 starts fine, but if I want to start Ubuntu regularly the following Machine Check Exception error occurs, quite similar to this one [Hardware Error] CPU 1: Machine Check Exception: 5 Bank 6 [Hardware Error] RIP !inexact! 33 <00007fab2074598a> [Hardware Error] TSC 95b623464c ADDR fe400 MISC 3880000086 .. [similar messages for CPU 2,3 and 0] .. [Hardware Error] Machine Check: Processor context corrupt Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal Machine Check Rebooting in 30 seconds Kernel panic does not sound good. Then it starts to reboot, and the second boot trial often works. Is it a Kernel or driver problem? The laptop has an Intel Core i7 processor. I already deactivated Hyperthreading in the BIOS, but it does not seem to help :-( I also disabled the Execute Disable Bit (EDB) flag in the BIOS. EDB is an Intel hardware-based security feature that can help reduce system exposure to viruses and malicious code. Since I disabled it, the error did occur less frequently, but it still appears occasionally :-( It seems to be the same error as described here and here. Maybe a Samsung specific Kernel problem? A similar error also happens on a Samsung Ultrabook Series 9 (which seems to be kernel bugs 49161 and 47121). At my Samsung Series 7, it still occurs for instance during booting on battery after "Checking battery state". Perhaps anyone else has an idea? These Kernel Panic errors are reallly annoying..

• jQuery + Perl CGI to vb.net transition

  I've been developing oracle database-heavy "web applications" forever by building my html by hand, adding some jquery to handle ajax requests (html inserts for forms processing etc), and always did my server side stuff in perl cgi. I really love how easy it is to read some form input, execute some select statements through dbi (SO EASY), and generate HTML to be inserted by the jquery request. That's a web application to me. However, my new boss builds everything in visual studio 2010, vb.net, usually webforms. So, for work reasons, I now need to start developing in vb.net so it can be collectively maintained, and I'm just seeking advice on where to start learning/how to approach this. I know I could at least learn ASP.net and VB.net, and create a webform, have it read parameters, return HTML, etc. which would allow me to use my previously written HTML and client-side scripts (jQuery). Although- since we're moving heavily to mobile applications I really need to reduce client-side processing load. Is there any advantage to my boss' method? Thanks a ton.

• Data structure for pattern matching.

  Let's say you have an input file with many entries like these: date, ticker, open, high, low, close, <and some other values> And you want to execute a pattern matching routine on the entries(rows) in that file, using a candlestick pattern, for example. (See, Doji) And that pattern can appear on any uniform time interval (let t = 1s, 5s, 10s, 1d, 7d, 2w, 2y, and so on...). Say a pattern matching routine can take an arbitrary number of rows to perform an analysis and contain an arbitrary number of subpatterns. In other words, some patterns may require 4 entries to operate on. Say also that the routine (may) later have to find and classify extrema (local and global maxima and minima as well as inflection points) for the ticker over a closed interval, for example, you could say that a cubic function (x^3) has the extrema on the interval [-1, 1]. (See link) What would be the most natural choice in terms of a data structure? What about an interface that conforms a Ticker object containing one row of data to a collection of Ticker so that an arbitrary pattern can be applied to the data. What's the first thing that comes to mind? I chose a doubly-linked circular linked list that has the following methods: push_front() push_back() pop_front() pop_back() [] //overloaded, can be used with negative parameters But that data structure seems very clumsy, since so much pushing and popping is going on, I have to make a deep copy of the data structure before running an analysis on it. So, I don't know if I made my question very clear -- but the main points are: What kind of data structures should be considered when analyzing sequential data points to conform to a pattern that does NOT require random access? What kind of data structures should be considered when classifying extrema of a set of data points?

• Creating packages in code - Workflow

  This is just a quick one prompted by a question on the SSIS Forum, how to programmatically add a precedence constraint (aka workflow) between two tasks. To keep the code simple I’ve actually used two Sequence containers which are often used as anchor points for a constraint. Very often this is when you have task that you wish to conditionally execute based on an expression. If it the first or only task in the package you need somewhere to anchor the constraint too, so you can then set the expression on it and control the flow of execution. Anyway, back to my code sample, here’s a quick screenshot of the finished article: Now for the code, which is actually pretty simple and hopefully the comments should explain exactly what is going on. • Improving the speed of writing code in C#

  Laugh if you want, but I used to develop substantial line-of-business applications in VB6, long before the .NET framework came along. Why, when I was your age, we used to walk two miles in the snow, uphill. Both ways... Love it or hate it, VB6 had a REPL-like feel, and a very rapid development cycle. I would like to know how to come closer to that process in C#. In VB6, I could write a function, execute it, debug it and have it fully functional in a few minutes. I am told this is how the Lisp crowd works. It's a very rapid-fire style of programming. In C# I write a function, then I write a unit test for that function (which is OK, I understand the value of that), then I right-click, run test, wait for the project to compile (takes about 10 seconds right now, which would be an eternity for a REPL loop), and get an exception. Honestly, this feels more like my junior college days, when I used to feed punch cards into a hopper and wait for a printout (exaggerating only slightly for effect). Additionally, my tendency nowadays is to make everything public while I'm testing it. Unit testing with private accessors works fine, but you can't trace through the code (unless, of course, I'm doing something wrong) while you're using them. So what I'd like to know is, what adjustments have you made to your development process in C# to streamline it, and make it possible to write and verify your code very rapidly?

• Colour coding of the status bar in SQL Server Management Studio - Oh dear

  The new feature in SQL Server 2008 to have your query window status bar colour coded to the server you are on is great. Its a nice way to distinguish production from development servers. Unfortunately it was pointed out to me by a client recently that it doesn't always work. To me that sort of makes it pointless. Its a bit like having breaks that work some of the time. Are you going to place Russian roulette every time you execute the query. Whats more the colour doesn't change if you change the connection. So you can flip between dev and production servers but your status bar stays the colour you set for the dev server. It really annoys me to find features that sort of work. The reason I initially gave up on SQLPrompt was that it didn't work 100% of the time and for that time it didn't work I wasted so much time trying to get it to work I wasted more time than if I didn't have it. (I will say that was 2-3 years ago). • Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

When I joined Oracle, I initially worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant at Oracle Czech Republic, but most recently, I have been working in the Demand Generation Team. I am a student of the Economics and Management Faculty at Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, specializing in Marketing, Business and Administration. I have recently passed my Bachelor exams. I received the information about Oracle’s Internship opportunity from a friend. I joined Oracle in September 2008 and worked as an Alliances and Channel Marketing Assistant until May 2009. • Spring Roo Database Reverse Engineer with Oracle

  So you are trying to reverse engineer an Oracle database with roo? Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions with the Oracle JDBC Drivers, this is a little difficult. There are a few blog posts and forum threads that address the problem but I figured I would post what worked for me here. First, you need to download the appropriate Oracle Drivers from Oracle. The required login, stringent password requirements, nosy registration form, and general system instability made this a pretty painful step for me. I’d also like to say that companies that have password requirements that don’t allow symbols (or any other non-standard requirement) have a special place in my heart. Having to recover my password every time I go to your site virtually guarantees I will only go there when I absolutely have to (not often). Anyways, once you have it downloaded you need to install is with maven: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=~/Downloads/ojdbc6.jar -DgroupId=com.oracle -DartifactId=ojdbc6 -Dversion=11.2.0.3 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true Here comes the fun part. You need to create an osgi wrapper for the driver to install it in roo. Otherwise, roo cannot see the driver. Create a new folder and put the contents of the oracle roo addon pom gist I created. Now build it with maven. You may want to change some of the artifact ids and dependencies for your particular situation. mvn package No open a roo shell and execute the following command: osgi install --url file:///Users/me/my-osgi-project/target/the-jar-it-built.jar Now run (in roo): jpa setup --provider HIBERNATE --database ORACLE dependency remove --groupId com.oracle --artifactId ojdbc14 --version 10.2.0.2 dependency add --groupId com.oracle --artifactId ojdbc6 --version 11.2.0.3 database properties set --key database.driverClassName --value oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver database properties set --key database.url --value jdbc:oracle:thin:@%YOUR_CONNECTION_INFO% database properties set --key database.username --value %YOUR_USERNAME% database properties set --key database.password --value %YOUR_PASSWORD% database reverse engineer --schema %YOUR_SCHEMA% --package ~.domain If you have any package loading exceptions when running the reverse engineer command you can uninstall the osgi bundle, set the package to optional in the osgi pom in the IncludedPackages tag (javax.some.package.*;resolution:=optional) rebuild, then reinstall in roo.

• Why I don't use SSIS checkpoint files

  In a recent discussion in regard to general ETL best practises the subject of checkpoint files as a means for package restartability came up and I stated that I was dead against using them. For anyone that may care, here is why: Configuring them is distinctly unintuitive (that's a matter of opinion but if you follow the link I'll wager that you will agree) they don't make any allowance for loop iterations they cannot store variables of type Object they are limited in ability. There are many scenarios where you may want to execute certain containers regardless of whether the package is started from a checkpoint file but the current usage model does not allow for this. they are ignored by eventhandlers, which wouldn't be so bad if there were a way to toggle this behaviour in certain scenarios they dont work properly I'll expand on the last bullet point. I have encountered situations where the behaviour for tasks executing concurrently is unpredictable. That is, sometimes the completion of a task that executes concurrently with a failed/failing task will make it into the checkpoint file and sometimes it won't. This is near-impossible to reproduce but it does happen as my good friend John Welch will hopefully concur (if he is reading). Is anyone out there making successful use of checkpoint files within SSIS? I would be interested in knowing about that if so. @Jamiet

Select the ImplicitViewCriteriaQuery entry and set the InitialQueryOverriden property to true.
