  hi , i am designing a simple project based to do list. the idea is to define tasks under project ( no workflow - just "task is completed" or not is required. ) in a hirarchial way. i.e. each task has multiple task and that task may have other multiple task. a project can be said to be completed if all task under that project are completed. , i tought of using refrenceproeperty to create hirarchy , but could not figure out easy way ( which do not take more than 30 seconds to find all the children of a project and check weather it is completed or not ) . to detect if project is complete or not. how to design database for such job ? and also , if i need to copy the project in order to define another project , how to copy hierarchical data ?

• Re-send POST request easily - what tools?

  I am looking for an easy way to re-send POST request to the server within the browser mainly for debug purposes. Say you have a XHR request which contains POST parameters that is to be send to the server. After having changed the script on the server side, you would like to resent the very same request for analyzing the output. What tool could help? I guess it is a browser's extension. I already tried extension Tamper Data for Firefox which does the job as you can "Replay in browser". But for my taste, it is not enough straight forward, as there are 3 - 4 clicks to get the result of the request. Unfortunately, curl would not be suitable for my needs as my application has a session's cookie.

• Dropping support for IE6, Is swfObject still relevant?

  We have recently dropped support for IE6 at my job. The other developers have have opted for a generic object embed method: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="example.swf" width="800" height="600" > <param name="movie" value="example.swf"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> </object> This seems to work in all modern browsers but it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure this is wrong in several ways and is clearly a big step back in sophistication. So my question is in 2 parts, what is wrong with the above method? Is swfObject still best practice and what issues does it solve (besides IE6 click-activate)? Citations less then a year old would also be helpful.

• PHP application variable... maybe?

  I went to a PHP job interview, I was asked to implement a piece of code to detect visitors are bots to crawl thru the website and steal content. So I implemented a few lines of code to detect if the site is being refreshed/visited too quickly/often by using a session variable to store last visit timestamp. I got told that session varaibles can be manupilated by cookies etc, so I am wondering if there is a application variable that I can use to store the timestamp information against visitor IPs eg $_SERVER[REMOTE_ADDR]? I know that I can write the data to a file but it's not very good for a high traffic website. Regards James

• object won't die (still references to it that I can't find)

  I'm using parallel-python and start a new job server in a function. after the functions ends it still exists even though I didn't return it out of the function (I used weakref to test this). I guess there's still some references to this object somewhere. My two theories: It starts threads and it logs to root logger. My questions: can I somehow findout in which namespace there is still a reference to this object. I have the weakref reference. Does anyone know how to detach a logger? • Are there any serialization frameworks for java

  I know there is simple, which seems to be a decent enough XML serializer and i know there is Jaxb which seems to do the job as well. However im after something a bit more generic, so I could serialize my model to Xml, Json, Binary etc. So the models are just dumb objects that just get thrown into some sort of serialization factory and then the relevant output is spat out... I dont see any reason why you couldn't do this with reflection, so for a REALLY simple solution get the relevent public properties, cut off the get or set and make that the element name... i.e getPersonName() would become <PersonName>xxxx</PersonName> or PersonName:XXXXX

  I am looking for a magnetic card reader with data storage of about 2 GB. This reader be placed in open under a shade, but would be exposed to temperatures from -5 C to 50 C. Job is to swipe customer loyalty cards issued to regular customers of a gas station. Each time they get gas filled, they will swipe their card, to mark their presence. Swiped data be stored in the reader. And on intervals be transferred to a PC lying in the office. The customer visits data be used to award some gifts or benefits to frequently visiting clients. • Master's in Software Engineering vs. Master's in Computer Science: which degree is preferred by empl

  I've been building software professionally for 7 years and am considering a master's degree. I understand the difference between these two degrees as simply: MSCS is the theory while MSE is the practice. I'm equally interested in both and would be happy with either, although I'm curious how these degrees rank in the eyes of a potential employer. I could see two views that a hiring manager could possibly take: a MSCS is loftier and has an implied knowledge of Software Engineering an MSE is more practical and has an implied knowledge of Computer Science In my own experience I've seen both MSCS degree holders than cannot program at all while others are among the best programmers I've met, so of course actual ability will depend on the individual. My question is about the "on paper" value of these two degrees when seeking a job. All things considered, is one degree more hirable, higher-paying than the other?

  I would like to schedule a batch job in which a can execute a move of data between two workspace application in Hyperion Fusion Edition for Oracle. The tool provided is called 'Data Synchronization' This tool allows for this type if activity to occur upon request via the workspace environment. How might I do this automatically? I noticed there is a Batch Scheduler for which I can request command line batch file to run at a pre-specified time. However, I do not know what resources are available to show me how to do this for the Data-Synchronizations.

• Working in consulting company

  I working for some numbers of years in an medium size ecomerce company where we developing and maintaining large distributed ecomerce system that is a core of company business. I thinking to switch job and one of the offers is in consulting company, the model of work there is different you suppose to work for couple of months at different clients of this company developing different project, this mode of working is very different for me and I don't sure if I will like it. From the positive side I will get experience in a lot of different projects in very different problem domains and with a lot of different technologies. From the negative side, I will always be an outsider in all this companies, placed in some far away corner I probably will have little emotional connection to projects I suppose to work on. Do you have some personal experience working in both of this types of companies that you could share ?

• How do I automatically rebuild the Sphinx index under django-sphinx?

  I just setup django-sphinx, and it is working beautifully. I am now able to search my model and get amazing results. The one problem is that I have to build the index by hand using the indexer command. That means every time I add new content, I have to manually hit the command line to rebuild the search index. That is just not acceptable. I could make a cron job that automatically runs the indexer command every so often, but that's far from optimal. New data won't be indexed until the cron runs again. In addition, the indexer will run unnecessarily most times as my site doesn't have data being added very often. How do I set it up so that the Sphinx index will automatically rebuild itself whenever data is added to or modified in a searchable django model?

  I have a handler consuming the keyDown event of a WinForms RTB, that has the following code: GetTextAtLoc(RTB->SelectionStart); // selects some text at the caret's position RTB->SelectedText = "SomeOfMyOwn"; GetTextAtLoc(RTB->SelectionStart); // selects the replacement string RTB->SelectionStart += RTB->SelectionLength - 1; While this code seems to do its job (SelectionStart/Length properties are updated correctly), the caret doesn't move to the end of the new string - It says right where it was at the time of GetTextAtLoc's first call. Redrawing the textbox does seem to have any effect either.

  Hi, I am looking for a simple way (UDF?) to establish the similarity between strings. The SOUNDEX and DIFFERENCE function do not seem to do the job. Similarity should be based on number of characters in common (order matters). For example: Spiruroidea sp. AM-2008 and Spiruroidea gen. sp. AM-2008 should be recognised as similar.   If invoices can be voided, should they be used as quotations? I have an Invoices tables that is created from inventory associated with a Job. I could have a Quotes table as a halfway-house between inventory and invoices, but it feels like I would have duplicate data structures and logic just to handle an "Is this a quote?" bit. From a business perspective, quotes are different from invoices: a quote is sent prior to an undertaking and an invoice is sent once it is complete and payment is due, but how to represent this in my repository and model. What is an elegant way to store and manage quotes & invoices in a database?

  FileMaker Pro 10 Server: Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 DAtA Server: Windows Server 2008 I am having problem cross platform issue when exporting XML from FileMaker Pro client on a Mac to DATA Server. My FileMaker Pro server is hosting on a Mac OS X and the I need user to export their data to a DATA server which is hosting on a Windows Server. I created a button(function/script) in the FileMaker form for user to export data once they finish with their job. FileMaker Pro client on the PC works perfectly but It does't work on the MAC.   Ok so in two days I have a test for my dream job (well it's an internship, but still!) and for quite some time now I've been reading the SCJP Guide book in order to prepare myself. BUT seeing how slow my reading speed is I guess finding a website with some "java essentials" or "standard java test questions" and going through it in those 2 days would be a better idea. Don't misunderstand me, I do have java experience and it's "only" an internship, but we all know how programming tests look like and how tricky they can be.   I have created an organizational chart using ASP.NET on web page. The web page is using strict DOCTYPE and following W3C standards. The chart has a hierarchical layout decided by the manager field in the table that contains employees in the organization. The chart layout has nodes with employee image and other details like job title, department and contact details. Nodes are beautifully arranged and connected by lines (only horizontal or vertical or both). A lot of DIV elements are used (to avoid table) for connecting lines and arranging the chart properly. As suggested by my friend, using DIVs for connecting lines in the chart is semantically wrong. Is there a way by which I can make it semantically correct? Or, am I using HTML for the wrong purpose?

• how to word wrap a QTreeWidgetItem

  hello all, i have to populate a QTreeWidget with items (or children of items) that may happen to be too long to fit in a single line, so i'm looking for a way to word wrap them. i thought myQTreeWidget.setWordWrap(True) (done via QtDesigner4) would have done the job, but that doesn't seem to be the case. i don't konw if it is relevant, but the tree is enveloped in a splitter frame, so the wrapping should be somehow dynamic to allow resizing of the splitter. Any ideas? I use PyQt4, but hints in any language/binding would be much appreciated. have a good day all.

  I've just found myself in situation where I needed to handle exception I'll probably never get, so out of curiosity, let's do a small poll. Do you validate the presence of resources in your programs? I mean, those resources which are installed with your program, like icons, images and similar. Generally, if those are missing, either your install didn't do its job, or the user randomly deleted files in your app. If you do validate the presence, what do you do when the files are not there? Of course, for web apps, you'll have nice 404 page or broken link, but what about the rest? Fail early, yes, but leave handling failures to your compiler, or what?

  After reading the responses to Is a College/University Degree Still Relevant?, I'd then ask, once you complete a university technology degree, would pursuing a masters in the field be worth it? Or is the experience you would gain working for those two years be more valuable? Or is a masters degree something that is more valuable after one has a few years of real-world experience after their undergrad? And what career doors would a masters open, and which would they possibly close? Keeping in mind this discussion on higher pay for advanced degrees, I'd rate whether a masters is worthwhile by both the pay one would get, but also more importantly, how enjoyable the job would be, and the types available (research only? development? management?).

Also, the user profile information will be periodically updated to the list , therefore i think i should use a timer job to update the information. Importing for the first time works without any issues. But can you suggest what can be the best way to update information. The update should take care of updating existing records in profile , mark as orphaned for the records that are deleted from user profile and add new records in user profile to the list. Thanks

  I am using VS 2008 Team Suite and SQL Server 2008 in my development environment. I am deploying to a shared-host website with shared-host SQL Server 2005. I want to push changes from my development environment to my production host. I tried using Data | Schema Compare... and it reports to me that it does not support SQL Server 2008. What do people use for this (Besides Red-Gate tools - I use those at my day job, and they rock...this is a volunteer thing for my son's school)? • Weblogic server 10.0 - Managed Server shutting down

  We have a weblogic server 10.0 instance which has a cluster with one managed server. Every Monday at 5am (or few seconds after), it shuts down on its own. The logs do not show any errors except the following message: JVM called WLS shutdown hook. The server will force shutdown now. JVM has a -Xnohup option and using JRockit. There is no cron job on the server. I am not sure how to debug this one. Admin Server keeps running with no issues and I am able to start the managed server back up with no problems. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• How many cron jobs are too many?

  I have a couple of cron jobs for basic maintenance which aren't very resource-intensive. I also have custom task scheduling (which is just calling a .php file and passing information via GET, ie: cronjob.php?param1=param ...). These can add up pretty quickly. These just call system commands and run external programs (Nmap is one of them). They usually don't take long either. Anyway, can anyone tell me, roughly what point is too many? I know it's hard to say since it depends on what job is being run and how often, but at what point does the crontab program start "struggling"? Anyone have any idea? Thanks.
