  • Kill Android Apps without Task Manager

    Android is for geeks. It best fits for the users who know how to get around sloppy areas and find their way out. If you are an heavy Android user you would have noticed Apps crashing often. A well written App should not crash, if crashes should exit the process gracefully. But unfortunately Google Play has many apps that not only just crash, they hang in a where they don’t respond and you can’t access the application. The only option left to you is to forcefully close them. If you encounter a situation to forcefully close an App you have two options. First one is to use Task Manager application to close them and the second option is use built in Android OS features.   • Install 12.10 using Logitech Keyboard and mouse with bluetooth dongle

    I'm trying to install 12.10 on my system, but my mouse and keyboard are not working during installation. I use the Logitech MX5500 Bluetooth mouse+keyboard combo with a Bluetooth dongle. My keyboard and mouse work in my UEFI bios, and during the Windows 7/8 installation. My keyboard also works in the Ubuntu screen that allows me to set options, install, use the live cd, etc, before boot. I'm wondering if anyone knows a way to get this dongle working during the installation process so that I can actually install 12.10. Thanks.

  • How do I determine if my R installation on OS X has the "--enable-R-shlib" option enabled?

    I've installed R on my OS X machine via the .pkg method. I'm trying to get a Ruby gem called RSRuby to work and though it installed correctly, it's throwing an error when I try to invoke the gem. Fatal error: R home directory is not defined Reading the documentation, R should be installed with the option --enable-R-shlib. But the R documentation states that the Mac OS X installation does this by default. How can you verify that this option is enabled on an installation if you don't know it was explicitly called during installation? I'm chasing down why RSRuby can't find R home directory and this seems like the most likely problem.

  • Xfce Power Manager on Xubuntu 13.10 doesn't work

    The problem is that its actually works, but something works with Xfce Power Manager at the same time. For example, I set that if I pressed Suspend button (on my Lenovo B560 its Fn+F2 hotkey) then system ask me what to do. But when Log out window appears, system goes to suspend. Another example is closing the lid. I set it to lock the screen via Xfce Power Manager, but system still goes to suspend. I thought that it might be laptop-mode-tools, but it's not installed. Before 13.10 I had 13.04 and everything were fine.

  • In Technology, Ignorance is NOT Bliss

    Author: Debra Lilley, ACE Director, UK Proof I’m not technical -  I’ve just finished a Latin America tour with OTN and a funny thing happened that I want to share with you; because it is quite a good analogy for how many of us use technology today and you know how I love analogies. In Costa Rica we had a really long journey up through the mountains to where our conference was to be. The road was windy and narrow and once it got dark there was no scenery to see, boredom set in. At one stage I looked at my watch to see the time, but in the dark I couldn’t make it out, so I thought I would be clever and use the torch in my smartphone! Even though as soon as I switched on the phone it showed the time, I ignored it and used the torch to read my watch. That’s us when we pay maintenance on software, ask for enhancements, and either chose not to upgrade or as I have seen so many times, upgrade but don’t use the new features. I know there are always other factors not least the upgrade costs themselves but in the later releases of all the Oracle family of applications Oracle have done a lot to make the interoperability of them with Oracle Fusion Middleware more successful and in many cases for the first time. My heritage is Oracle E Business Suite (EBS) and the availability of Oracle Weblogic for EBS is fantastic for an Oracle powered organisation that can move away from supporting multiple flavours of application server. The same release made available  - the no downtime patching that Oracle Database 11g introduced with Edition Based Redefinition. I am not saying you must use these features but you must be aware of what each release of your application brings and make a business based decision as to whether it is for you or not. I like to have a simple spreadsheet of features with no-value, nice-to-have, must-have ratings, but make the spreadsheet cumulative so that when you do upgrade you have all the features listed you previously didn’t take up.   • Restoring Grub after Kubuntu installation

    I installed Kubuntu on top of my existing Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) installation. During Kubuntu installation, I chose lightdm as my default display manager (instead of kdm). Now after rebooting, the Grub has a new color (gray instead of default purplish) and the screen while booting is gray (instead of purplish). I am curious if it is possible to change this grub behavior without removing Kubuntu. I did find a lot of discussion about modifying grub themes but they were not very useful because I do not know what is the default unity grub theme. I did reinstall grub but it didn't change anything. I tried the Grub Customizer but couldn't succeed. Thanks in advance!

I tried to install mysql-query-browser in my Ubuntu 12.04 GUI, I get the error message: Updating mysql-administrator installation paths... ./mysql-administrator: 59: ./mysql-administrator: cannot create /opt/mysql-gui-tools-5.0/lib/pangorc.bak: Permission denied Error updating files for new installation path. Please make sure mysql-administrator is installed correctly and you have proper write permissions in the installation directory. Tried the ..... /opt/mysql-gui-tools-5.0$ ./mysql-administrator --update-paths . and /opt/mysql-gui-tools-5.0$ ./mysql-administrator --update-paths but still no success.........
