  • web.config inheritance problem

    Hello everyone, I am having an issue when I try and prevent inhertiance from a parent web.config down to a child specifically related to the node. My parent web.config contains about a dozen appSettings values while my child web.config contains none. Now, I originally began wrapping around only my system.net, web, etc nodes however when I ran my child application I recieved the following error: The configuration section 'appSettings' cannot be read because it is missing a section declaration I really wasn't sure what this meant and a google search didn't yield me any decent results so I attempted to move the location node to also encompass the field in my parent web.config but to no avail. My child web.config is pretty vanilla so I am not sure what the problem is. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.   • Does whitespace in the title tag affect SEO?

    The site I'm working on uses Umbraco and has xslt macros to generate dynamic page title tags - but the title tags generated contain lots of whitespace and linefeeds. Now these macros can be changed so I'm sure that the contents of the title tag can be condensed, but at this stage of development we'd rather not do any work that is not essential. I've checked W3 and Google but I'm struggling to find something conclusive on whitespace. So I'd like to ask is a title tag formatted like this: <title> Sitename - The official blah blah blah - Section - Section Search Results </title> any worse for SEO than: <title>Sitename - The official blah blah blah - Section - Section Search Results</title> ... and are there any other implications to leaving the title tag with whitespace in it?

    I have a web application, which works fine if I include my user controls with <%@ Register TagPrefix="mine" TagName="MyUC1" Src="~/UserControls/MyUc1.ascx" %> <%@ Register TagPrefix="mine" TagName="MyUC2" Src="~/UserControls/MyUc2.ascx" %> But I need to use the namespace due to needing to integrate with Umbraco. When I replace the register declaration with: <%@ Register TagPrefix="mine" Namespace="MyAssembly.UserControls" Assembly="MyAssembly"%> I get a null reference exception in the UserControl's Page_Load event (which references an ASP.NET control which is used by the UserControl itself. I find this pretty bizarre, but I've found very little information on how to fix it.

I have taken a look at big CMS systems like umbraco and Dotnetnuke and said to myself that these developers must have decades of programming experience. Just the design of these products are overwhelming let alone the actual code. I just would like your comments on what it is like being a programmer.

    I have an issue where adding this to any asp.net request causes and unhandled error (regardless of CustomErrors setting): ?aspxerrorpath=<script The weird thing is that I have two applications that are totally immune to the problem, but I can't spot the difference. I'm running on IIS 7 and using the 4.0 Framework. But this also happens on my 3.5 IIS 6 apps. Again, I have two sites that are fine (IIS 7, 4.0) but can't determine why. I have tried turning off request validation to no avail. Has anyone encountered something similar? FIXED: This looks like it was an Umbraco issue. It was ignoring my validateRequest="false" in the web.config. Adding this to the template fixed it:

  • Are VMWare ESXi 5 patches cumulative?

    It seems basic, but there's confusion about the patching strategy needed to manually update standalone VMWare ESXi hosts. The VMWare vSphere blog attempts to explain this, but it's still not clear. From the blog: Say Patch01 includes updates for the following VIBs: "esxi-base", "driver10" and "driver 44". And then later Patch02 comes out with updates to "esxi-base", "driver20" and "driver 44". P2 is cumulative in that the "esxi-base" and "driver44" VIBs will include the updates in Patch01. However, it's important to note that Patch02 not include the "driver 10" VIB as that module was not updated. Many of my ESXi installations are standalone and do not make use of Update Manager. It is possible to update an individual host using the patches make available through the VMWare patch download portal. The process is quite simple, and that part makes sense. The bigger issue is determining what to actually download and install. In my case, I have a good number of HP-specific ESXi builds that incorporate sensors and management for HP ProLiant hardware. Let's say that those servers start at ESXi build #474610 from 9/2011. Looking at the patch portal screenshot below, there is a patch for ESXi update01, build #623860. There are also patches for builds #653509 and #702118. Coming from the old version of ESXi, what is the proper approach to bring the system fully up-to-date? Which patches are cumulative and which need to be applied sequentially? Perhaps the download size is the confusing factor, but is installing the newest build the right approach, or do I need to step back and patch incrementally?

    I'm trying to get my Pelican blog working. It uses lftp to transfer the actual blog to ones server, but I always get an error: mirror: Fatal error: Certificate verification: subjectAltName does not match ‘blogname.com’ I think lftp is checking the SSL and the quick setup of Pelican just forgot to include that I don't have SSL on my FTP. This is the code in Pelican's Makefile: ftp_upload: $(OUTPUTDIR)/index.html lftp ftp://$(FTP_USER)@$(FTP_HOST) -e "mirror -R $(OUTPUTDIR) $(FTP_TARGET_DIR) ; quit" which renders in terminal as: lftp ftp://[email protected] -e "mirror -R /Volumes/HD/Users/me/Test/output /myblog_directory ; quit" What I managed so far is, denying the SSL check by changing the Makefile to: lftp ftp://$(FTP_USER)@$(FTP_HOST) -e "set ftp:ssl-allow no" "mirror -R $(OUTPUTDIR) $(FTP_TARGET_DIR) ; quit" Due to my incorrect implementation I get logged in correctly (lftp [email protected]:~>) but the one line feature doesn't work anymore and I have to enter the mirror command by hand: mirror -R /Volumes/HD/Users/me/Test/output/ /myblog_directory This works without an error and timeout. The question is how to do this with a one liner. In addition I tried: set ssl:verify-certificate/ftp.myblog.com no This trick to disable certificate verification in lftp: $ cat ~/.lftp/rc set ssl:verify-certificate no However, it seems there is no "rc" folder in my lftp directory - so this prompt has no chance to work.

    Hello, I'm using windows 7 ultimate. svchost containing DCOM Server Process Launcher Plug and Play Power services is consuming more than 50% of CPU for most of the time. I found this blog post: http://blog.hansmelis.be/2007/06/17/windows-vista-long-delay-when-switching-songs-in-media-player/ That process is associated with two services: DCOM Server Process Launcher and Plug and Play. For the Vulcans among us, all logic stops there for a second. What do those two services have to do with WMP? The answer is provided by Vista's new audio engine. The new engine supports several audio "enhancements". But for the enhancements to work, the engine needs to determine if your hardware is up to the task. And when does it check that? Each time a sound output device is accessed. That's pretty nice if you can do a hot swap of sound hardware, but I don't see me doing that anytime soon. Anyways, it does provide us with the link to the correct service because checking hardware is done by the "Plug and Play" service. One might think that deactivating each enhancement would solve the problem, but that's wishful thinking. The configuration of the enhancements is located in the properties of the sound hardware. When opening the tab, I found out that no enhancements were active. Hmmm... so why does it check the hardware? Well, it does that in case you actually enable an enhancement. To completely stop the hardware checking, you have to tick the box labelled Disable all enhancements. As soon as you do that, Vista finally understands you don't want to use them buts thats for vista. Is it the same case with windows 7 too? and I couldn't find any "Disable all enhancements" in my controlpanelsounds (mmsys.cpl). Where can I find this option in windows 7? How to solve this?

  • How do I fix issue causing "incomplete startup packet" log message trying to implement replication in Postgresql?

    I've got two cloud servers running Ubuntu 13.04 and PostgreSQL 9.2. I've primarily used this blog post to aid me in setting things up. However, to do the initial database dump to the slave I'm using pg_start_backup/pg_stop_backup strategy used in this other blog post. I've read through the docs and postgres wikis as well. I ran into several problems I was able to solve, but I can't get past this wretched "the database is starting up" failure. I'm not sure if seeing "cp: cannot stat '/var/lib/postgresql/9.2/archive/00000001000000000000003A': No such file or directory" after "consistent recover state reached" is normal or the first sign of a problem. The searching I've done on "the database is starting up" and "incomplete startup packet" tells me that something is sending empty TCP packets to the slave. The only thing that even knows about the slave is the master, so I'm not sure why it's sending empty packets... Has anyone worked with this and have an idea what might be going wrong?     I use a server a home to host a bunch of concurrently running Hyper-V VM's with different OS's and software for testing. I have Vista on the laptop, all latest SP's and patches. The server is Server 2008 R2, fully patched. The guests are a mix of XP, Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. If I connect to the Win XP or Server 2008 guest using RDP, it is always good. Very quick, no speed issues. If I connect to the Vista or Win 7 guests, the response time is so slow it is unusable. Usually 6 or 8 seconds, and at times it is to long to measure! This happens from both the laptop running Vista, and the server running Server 2008 R2. Does anyone know what the issue is with RDP on Vista and Windows 7 destinations? I did read this: http://blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/microsoft/remote-desktop-slow-problem-solved.asp and that is not the problem I have applied that change to all PC's.

  • Makecert.exe hangs

    I was following the steps in Scott Hanselman's blog post describing how to create a certificate authority and code signing certificate for PowerShell scripts. Initially, I created the certificate authority and a personal certifcate and used it to sign a powershell script successfully. All went as described in the blog post. The problem starts (as most do) when I did something that was (probably) stupid, although it seemed reasonable at the time. I wanted to start over and repeat the process again with a clean slate, so from the mmc certificates snap-in console, I deleted the personal certificate and the certificate authority I created previously. After that any time I try to use makecert, (just as I did the first time around), makecert either hangs or faults (which prompts to end or debug). Did I hose something up by deleting via the certificates snap-in? It didn't complain or warn me that it could be potentially hazardous. Is this just coincidence and something else entirely could be hosed? I have Event Log entries from the times when makecert crashed, which all look very similar; here is one: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 8/5/2009 3:55:04 PM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Description: Faulting application makecert.exe, version 6.0.6000.16384, time stamp 0x4545910b, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 6.0.6002.18005, time stamp 0x49e03821, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00067409, process id 0xe58, application start time 0x01ca160efdf30625.   • Cannot 301 redirect with IIS URL Rewrite Module

    I am trying to troubleshoot my issue with the URL Rewrite Module on IIS 7. I migrated a Wordpress blog over to BlogEngine.net. There were only about 5 entries that I wanted to use 301 redirects to the new blog, so I wanted to simply create 5 exact match redirect rules using the rewrite module. For some reason the exact match rule never seems to take effect, I always get a 404 error when the original url is navigated to. I verified that my exact match pattern matched the existing backlinks and it does. I then tried a simple test and got the same behavior, no redirection. I created a page, test.html, on my site, I then created a second page, test2.html. So my exact match pattern is: "http://www.mydomain.com/test.html" And the rule is supposed to do a 301 redirect to "http://www.mydomain.com/test2.html " The redirect never happens. I created the steps for the rule based on the instructions in this page: http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/461/creating-rewrite-rules-for-the-url-rewrite-module/ I don't see that I left out a step. After I apply the rule I've even gone as far as doing an IISReset to make sure it would be in effect but still no luck. Any thoughts on what I might have left out? (Note: my rewrite rules dont include the " " around them but I had to add since serverfault thinks I am trying to spam the system with multiple urls.)

    I need to improve my linux hosted vmware workstation for using multiple virtual machines at the same time. I feel very stupid I lost a great blog post link which I found last month (and I'm not able to find it again..) so I try to ask here if anyone can help me: This is my host (laptop): 16GB DDR3 Ram HDD Hybrid 750GB 7200 (8GB SSD Cache) Mint 15 x64 Kernel 3.9.7 swappiness set to 10 The above are the important things about the host. So, My need is the ability to run 2 or 3 VMs at the same time. The lack of performance is about the disk, The last time from that blog post I lost, I setup /tmp to be mounted ad a memory partition and in my previous installation that was good, now I'm not able to find a good solution to tweak the things. I think with 16GB o RAM there will be no problems to run multiple VMs, but whe they start to swap or use the /tmp things going bad (guest cursor going too fast after a freeze, guest freeze and so on) Anyone can help me to fit a good host tweak and configuration to get better performance?
