• IntelliTrace Causing Slow WPF Debugging in Visual Studio 2010

  Just a quick note to myself (and others that may stumble across this blog entry via a web search): If a WPF application is running slow inside the debugger of Visual Studio 2010, but perfectly fine without a debugger (e.g. by hitting Ctrl-F5), then the reason may be Intellitrace. In my case switching off Intellitrace (only available in the Ultimate Edition of Visual Studio 2010) helped gitting rid of the sluggish behavior of a DataGrid. In the “Tools” menu select “Options”, on the Options dialog click “Intellitrace” and then uncheck “Enable Intellitrace”. Note that I do not have access to Visual Studio 2012 at the time of this writing, thus I cannot make a statement about its debugging behavior.

  A while ago Spotify (the streaming music service) came out with a preview for Linux of their client. I had succesfully run it throughout 10.04. Now I'm on 10.10, I can't seem to find it in the package manager, let alone install it. Software Sources gives me this; Failed to fetch http://repository.spotify.com/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry non-free/source/Sources in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?) Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. So...as I'm paying for Spotify what...umm...do I do? :P

  Hi I am in the 3rd and last year at college of informatics and I am interested to follow a career in web development when I finish(2 more months). From what I understand this days to get hired you need to be able to know a variety of technologies at least that is the case in Romania.Most of the jobs I have seen even at entry level asks you to know the following: HTML/CSS Javascript , a framework preferable jQuery , Ajax a server side language in my case PHP and a framework SQL and an RDBMS in my case MySql a CMS in my case Wordpress My question is how well should me or anyone looking to get hired as a web developer for there first job should we know this technologies in order to get hired and what else should we aim to learn to have a better chance of getting hired. I don't know if the question is right for this forum but I believe that this could help many of the students and anyone who is taking an interest in web development to know what they should expect from there employers when they try to find work.

• Mounting with Nautilus works but fstab gives "Host is down" error?

  I'm connecting to my university's VPN so I can connect to the network drive. The VPN seems to be working fine and I can connect to the drive by typing the address into Nautilus and entering my login details: smb://139.___.___.140/home However, this fstab entry doesn't work: //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ cifs domain=CS,username==___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai 0 0 Nor does manually mounting it: sudo mount -t cifs //139.___.___.140/home /media/___ -o domain=CS,username=___,password=___,uid=sai,gid=sai,user The only error it gives is: mount error(112): Host is down Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) It's obvious the host isn't down since I can view the share from Nautilus. Why is Nautilus mounting it fine but not the normal mount command? What could cause this error?

• Using ptrace to generate a stack dump

  Hello. I am compiling C++ on *nix and I would like to generate a stack dump a) at an arbitrary point in the program, b) during any signal, particularly during SIGSEGV. Google tells me that ptrace is probably the tool for the job, but I can't find any comprehensible examples of walking the stack. Getting the return address, yeah, but what about the NEXT return address? And what about extracting the symbolic name of the function at that point? Something to do with DWARF? Many thanks if you can tell me where to go from here.

• Can compiler optimization introduce bugs ?

  Hi, Today I had a discussion with a friend of mine and we debated for a couple of hours about "compiler optimization". I defended the point that sometimes, a compiler optimization might introduce bugs or at least, undesired behavior. My friend totally disagreed, saying that "compiler are built by smart people and do smart things" and thus, can never go wrong. He didn't convinced my at all, but I have to admit I lack of real-life examples to strengthen my point. Who is right here ? If I am, do you have any real-life example where a compiler optimization produced a bug in the resulting software ? If I'm mistaking, should I stop programming and learn fishing instead ? • Build Issue with multi module project

  Hi, I have a multi module web project. Four modules of the project are packaged as jar and added as dependency to the fifth module, which is packaged as war. When it is time to deploy the application i just run package on the war project and my war is created with all the dependencies. Now there is a problem. One of the my module have heavy changes. Now when i created war for my projects these changes was not reflected in the output war file(the jar in lib folder of war has still the old code). Can you please point the things i am missing from the release process? Why the old code is being packaged with the war? • Scrolling when idle?

  Can anyone point me to an example of code for a page that begins to automatically scroll when the user is idle for an amount of time? I think this is slightly beyond my skill set. I think JQuery or something similar might be appropriate but I just can't seem to figure it out. I'm designing a site for the nonprofit I work for and we don't have the money to hire a programmer.   Is there any way to set up Ubuntu this way: If I can't mount the filesystem in rw mode, then mount it in ro mode in the same directory. In result I should not come across the notification that the system can't mount the filesystem (Skip or manual fix notification). SO when I start the system I should have my ntfs partitions mounted either in rw or ro mode depends if the windows is hibernated. fstab entry: #/dev/sda7 UUID=D0B43178B43161E0 /media/Dane ntfs defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1 "mount -a" result: The disk contains an unclean file system (0, 0). Metadata kept in Windows cache, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda7': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. I have ubuntu 13.10 and win8. I use uefi secure boot.

• Improving performance of fuzzy string matching against a dictionary [closed]

  Hi, So I'm currently working for with using SecondString for fuzzy string matching, where I have a large dictionary to compare to (with each entry in the dictionary has an associated non-unique identifier). I am currently using a hashMap to store this dictionary. When I want to do fuzzy string matching, I first check to see if the string is in the hashMap and then I iterate through all of the other potential keys, calculating the string similarity and storing the k,v pair/s with the highest similarity. Depending on which dictionary I am using this can take a long time ( 12330 - 1800035 entries ). Is there any way to speed this up or make it faster? I am currently writing a memoization function/table as a way of speeding this up, but can anyone else think of a better way to improve the speed of this? Maybe a different structure or something else I'm missing. Many thanks in advance, Nathan

• How can I make SWF files be opened with the standalone player?

  I have installed the standalone Flash debug player to /usr/lib/flashplayerdebugger and I can now use it to test within Flash Builder (Eclipse), but I can't make an SWF open with it from Nautilus. If I right click and select Open With Other Application it is not in the list of programs, and I can't see how to add it. How can I make it the default application for SWF files opened in Nautilus? • SilverLight 3 Beginner question: Scroll with mousewheel and zoom image with panning

  Has anyone done a thorough comparison of AppFabric and NCache or AppFabric and ScaleOut? We are currently looking to implement either AppFabric, NCache or ScaleOut for distributed caching in geographically distant locations and I would like to know anyone's thoughts who has compared them side by side. I appreciate that many people use one or the other and tell me why their chosen solution is great but I am really looking for a comparison of the two products. Such things as what does AppFabric not do or not do well (if anything), partially from a features point of view but also from developer's point of view. Is working with one compared to the other nicer, easier, more flexible, more powerful, etc. There are plenty of lists of features which I can compare but am really looking for a comparison from someone who has perhaps been in a similar position to us and has performed the evaluation that we are about to launch into which will give us some food for thought whilst we do so. I think the problem lies with the initial LI controlling the ul underneath somehow. I need to keep the xhtml formatted exactly how it is right now and only change the CSS to fix this problem. • Splitting assemblies - finding the balance (avoiding overkill)

  I'm writing a wide component infrastructure, to be used in my projects. Since not all projects will require every component created, I've been thinking of splitting the component into discrete assemblies, so that every application developed will only be deployed with the required assemblies. I assume that creating an assembly has some storage overhead (the assembly's code, wrapping whatever is inside). Therefore, there must be some limit to the advantage gained by splitting an assembly - a certain point where splitting the assembly is worse than keeping it united (storage-wise and performance-wise). Now, here is the question: how do I know when splitting an assembly is an overkill? P.S I guess there are other overheads to assembly splitting, aside from the storage overhead. If anyone can point out these overheads, it would be much appreciated.

• Stack / base pointers in assembly

  I know this topic has been covered ad-naseum here, and other places on the internet - but hopefully the question is a simple one as I try to get my head around assembly... So if i understand correctly the ebp (base pointer) will point to the top of the stack, and the esp (stack pointer) will point to the bottom -- since the stack grows downward. esp therefore points to the 'current location'. So on a function call, once you've saved the ebp on the stack you insert a new stack frame - for the function. So in the case of the image below, if you started from N-3 you would go to N-2 with a function call. But when you are at N-2 - is your ebp == 25 and the esp == 24 (at least initially, before any data is placed on the stack)? Is this correct or am I of on a tangent here? Thanks!

Just as the line tool in Photoshop (for example): The user clicks on the image, drags the mouse (while the line between the start point and the mouse point is dynamically drawn on mouse drag). I would also need a callable function to send the page the start and end coordinates. • 12.04 Wacom Volito tablet pressed without touching tablet surface

  My tablet has worked okay in the past with older Ubuntu versions, and I think even with 12.04 a while back. Perhaps something has changed with the driver. Anyway my problem is the same as listed in this Ubuntu Forums thread, only the fixes in there don't seem to work for me. xsetwacom changes the value, but seems to have no effect on the tablet, and there is no entry in dconf-editor. Does anyone have any ideas? The tablet is basically unusable to me at the moment. It's an original Volito rather than the Volito 2 listed in the thread, but the problem is identical.
