  • does the concept of flow apply to tcp as well as udp?

    I have a very large network trace file which contains both tcp and udp packets.I want to find out the flows in the trace file.For that I have a hash function which takes in source ip address,destination ip address,source port,destination port and protocol.In case of TCP I can understand that the flow means all the packets which have the same 5 parameters same.But what does it mean in case of UDP.how does the concept of flow apply in case of UDP.? I am a novice in packet processing.

  • Autocomplete server-side implementation

    What is a fast and efficient way to implement the server-side component for an autocomplete feature in an html input box? I am writing a service to autocomplete user queries in our web interface's main search box, and the completions are displayed in an ajax-powered dropdown. The data we are running queries against is simply a large table of concepts our system knows about, which matches roughly with the set of wikipedia page titles. For this service obviously speed is of utmost importance, as responsiveness of the web page is important to the user experience. The current implementation simply loads all concepts into memory in a sorted set, and performs a simple log(n) lookup on a user keystroke. The tailset is then used to provide additional matches beyond the closest match. The problem with this solution is that it does not scale. It currently is running up against the VM heap space limit (I've set -Xmx2g, which is about the most we can push on our 32 bit machines), and this prevents us from expanding our concept table or adding more functionality. Switching to 64-bit VMs on machines with more memory isn't an immediate option. I've been hesitant to start working on a disk-based solution as I am concerned that disk seek time will kill performance. Are there possible solutions that will let me scale better, either entirely in memory or with some fast disk-backed implementations? Edits: @Gandalf: For our use case it is important the the autocompletion is comprehensive and isn't just extra help for the user. As for what we are completing, it is a list of concept-type pairs. For example, possible entries are [("Microsoft", "Software Company"), ("Jeff Atwood", "Programmer"), ("StackOverflow.com", "Website")]. We are using Lucene for the full search once a user selects an item from the autocomplete list, but I am not yet sure Lucene would work well for the autocomplete itself. @Glen: No databases are being used here. When I'm talking about a table I just mean the structured representation of my data. @Jason Day: My original implementation to this problem was to use a Trie, but the memory bloat with that was actually worse than the sorted set due to needing a large number of object references. I'll read on the ternary search trees to see if it could be of use.

  • Linq To Sql or classic ADO.net?

    I am asking my self many times before start writting a new app or data access library , should I use LinqToSql or classic ADO.net , I have used both and the development time I spend on building an app with Linq To sql is like the 1/3 compared to ADO.net. The only think I like using Linq to sql is that I dont have to design the domain objects Linq does that for me and saves me from spend my time on boring things :P But is Linq to sql suitable for large scale projects , is there an overhead that we can avoid when using ADO.net ?

  • Interesting issue with ScriptManager timeout value happens only in win2k machines

    When I set the Asyncpostbacktimeout value to a large value like 3600000000, the scriptmanager throws a timeout exception (it throws the error almost immediately after user action which triggers ajax request, so it is not timing out because the server is not responding). If I reset this value to some sane number like 3600 or even 36000, it works fine. AJAx content is getting updated in the page. This weirdness happens only in windows 2000 machines and does not happen in XP machines Any thoughts ?

  • Why limit WCF ServiceContracts to 10-20 OperationContracts?

    I've seen recommendations (Juval Lowy, et al) that a service contract should have "no more than 20 members...twelve is probably the practical limit". Why? It seems that if you wish to provide a service as the interface to a relatively large db (50-100 tables) you're going to go way past that in just CRUD alone. I've worked with plenty of other services that provided hundreds of 'OperationContracts'...is there something peculiar about WCF? Is there something I'm missing here?

    I'm writing a parser in PHP which must be able to handle large in-memory strings, so this is a somewhat important issue. (ie, please don't "premature optimize" flame me, please) How does the substr function work? Does it make a second copy of the string data in memory, or does it reference the original? Should I worry about calling, for example, $str = substr($str, 1); in a loop?

    Lets say that you get involved in the development of a large project that is already in development for a long period ( more than one year ). The projects follows some of the current design guidelines, but also has a few different, that are currently discouraged ( mostly at naming guidelines ). Supposing that you can't/aren't allowed to change the whole project: What should be more important, consistency, follow the existing ones and defy current guidelines or the usage of the guidelines, creating differences between modules of the same project ? The collection is getting pretty large and I want to set up a code bank for myself. What code banks do people use? Do you find it helps, or is there some better way of organising my reusable code snippets? (If one does exist, I'd prefer it be open-source, accessible via a web browser, language-agnostic, and maybe colour the code the way Stackoverflow does :)

If I use something like: printDocument.PrintPage += OnPrintPage; printDocument.Print(); my printing task size in printer queue takes more than 1 GB!. I've done a lot of reading into the various patterns suggested for development, somthing that has split the team at the moment is when using Entity Framework should the classes be passed through the applciation layers so that a view accepts an Entity Framework class or should these classes be mapped to BLL Classes and if so at which point (Controller or Library) should this be done?   • Refactoring many nested ifs or chained if statements

    Hi, I have an object with large number of similar fields (like more than 10 of them) and I have to assign them values from an array of variable length. The solution would be either a huge nested bunch of ifs based on checking length of array each time and assigning each field OR a chain of ifs checking on whether the length is out of bounds and assigning each time after that check. Both seem to be repetitive. Is there a better solution ?
