  In the good old days with IIS 6, it was possible to use the SEOLib to make a managed hook in the SMTP service that would run whenever a mail got delivered. In Vista and W7 they stopped shipping SEOLib, so we can no longer develop for it. What is the replacement for this functionality?

• Bizarre WHERE col = NULL behavior

  This is a problem one of our developers brought to me. He stumbled across an old stored procedure which used 'WHERE col = NULL' several times. When the stored procedure is executed it returns data. If the query inside the stored procedure is executed manually it will not return data unless the 'WHERE col = NULL' references are changed to 'WHERE col IS NULL'. Can anyone explain this behavior?

• Is it reasonable to use OpenGL for desktop applications?

  I've been writing a small desktop gadget-type application that displays scrolling text along the bottom of the screen (Similar to the old CNN news ticker), however the performance of GDI is just unsatisfactory (As high as 8-12% on a quad core and 20% on a single core) even after I've attempted to clean out bottlenecks. I was considering using OpenGL instead to render everything, but I don't know if that is a reasonable option to require users to have hardware acceleration for a tiny app like this. Does anybody have any input on this?

  An old mentor once told me to place indexes on most things you use a WHERE clause for. Should I put an index on BOOL/TINYINT's? There is a significant amount of them in the table I am working with, and often results are filtered by anywhere from 1-20 of these boolean conditions.

  I am dealing with a large old codebase that has a lot of these: try { ... } catch { throw; } Resharper helpfully marks these and offers the option to "Remove redundant catch", but I don't like having to go through one-by-one, I would like to wipe them out all at once. Is there a way to do that with Resharper, possibly by integrating it in with "Code cleanup"?

  I've got quite a complex .Net 2.0 project to build (with VS 2010) which does not build without 2.0 version of System.ServiceModel.dll and does not run if compiled with .Framework 4.0. Can I install Net Framework 2.0 safely after 3.5 and 4.0? Or where can I download an old System.ServiceModel .dll assembly?

  I am a beginner who finally started understanding anonymous types. (see old post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3010147/what-is-the-return-type-for-a-anonymous-linq-query-select-what-is-the-best-way-t) So in LINQ queries you form the type of return value you want within the linq query right? It seems the way to do this is anonymous type right? Can someone explain to me if and when I could use a Tuple/Expando object instead? They all seem very simliar?

• Any addins for VS2010 to support VS2005 prjects?

  Hello. Some of the old projects in our company are left to be built with VS2005 in autobuild system (making them built correctly in 2010 costs time). Is it any addins for VS2010 that will allow to open VS2005 project and edit it's files without converting project file itself to VS2010 format (converting will kill autobuild)? Of course i can create a separate project named "xxx_vs2010.vcproj" for each of such products, but that will be a mess :(.

• Can't export release build / compile for Adobe Air 1.0

  I opened up an old project in Flex Builder 3 which runs on Adobe AIR 1.0. I believe it was originally written in Flex Builder 2. When I try to run the air app, nothing happens. When I try to export a release build, I get this error: If I change the main-app.xml file to use the 1.5 version of the namespace, it builds fine. Unfortunately, the clients environment runs on 1.0. Ideas?

• OpenGL: Implementing transformation matrix stack

  In a newer OpenGL there is no matrix stack. I am working on a simple display engine, and I am going to implement the transformation stack. What is a common strategy here? Should I build a push/pop stack, and use it with a tree representing my model? I suppose this is the "old" approach, that was deprecated in the newer OpenGL versions. Maybe then it is not the best solution (it was removed for some reason)
