• The very bare minimum of latex to compile documents

  I'm creating a relatively small console program which will be used by some other people as well. As part of its output it will be creating a tex file which will contain some two tables, a few rows of text and one plot. Not, my program is pretty small - under a Mb. The problem is I can't count on my users to have latex installed, so I'd like to include the very bare minimum required files to create it (pdf). What would be a good place to start searching on that topic, or even better, does anyone know what I would need to include with it to accomplish that ? I remember my last latex install being pretty ... well, gigantic. Kind regards !

• How to get SQL Server Date in its native format?

  I need to get a Date from an SQL Server Database (SQL Server 2000), the date is stored as such: 2009-09-30 00:00:00.000 I want to pass this date into a Classic ASP function to use this date in the Database somewhere else, however when I get the date, it converts in my ASP code to a locale-dependant version, such as: 30/09/2009 I just want the date as-is as formatting the date so it is correct again seems unnecessary, although if this the only way then fine - is there any way to treat it as string data so it stays like that, so it can be inserted back into the database as the same date, without needing conversion?

• Coding issue in the 3D Buzz Hyperion tutorial.I am work

  I'm following along with the tutorial. And we are currently coding the Item class. I am using the 2008 edition, while the tutorial uses 2005. The code I am having issue with is: public string Weight { get { return weight; } set { weight = value; } } earlier in the code, we had: private int Weight = 1; as you can see, they are both different variables, int, and string. I'm doing exactly as the tutorial shows, on mine, I get a conversion error, whereas in the tutorial, there are no errors, why is this? I'm doing exactly what the video shows.

• Strange error: cannot convert from 'int' to 'ios_base::openmode'

  I am using g++ to compile some code. Error 1: invalid conversion from ‘int’ to ‘std::_Ios_Openmode’ Error 2: initializing argument 2 of ‘std::basic_filebuf<_CharT, _Traits* std::basic_filebuf<_CharT, _Traits::open(const char*, std::_Ios_Openmode) [with _CharT = char, _Traits = std::char_traits]’ As far as I could tell from a Google search, g++ is actually breaking the C++ standard here. Which I find quite astonishing, since they generally conform very strictly to the standard. Is this the case? Or am I doing something wrong. • Linux based MS Office thumbnail generation

  I've been taken on board to work on a PHP based web application. One part of the application generates thumbnail images for MS Office documents on demand, and it uses MS Office + the VeryPDF docprint utility to do this. Because of this one requirement, the system is running on Windows Server 2003 + IIS. I would prefer to have the system running on a Linux server, rather than MS, as I have far more experience in administering Linux systems than Windows and we have no other in-house technical staff. Does anyone know a way to handle the document conversion using native Linux software? I would love something PHP native, but am willing to look outside that if necessary.   TLDR I want toggle between the following usages of a usb-port via the terminal: use like a normal usb-port only supply energy to charge Story I recently got me something like a magna doodle that can save your drawings to pdf, which can be moved to your computer via usb afterwards. Now the thing is that you can't save anything while it's plugged in. Because it's the only way to charge it, it bugs me that I can't find a software solution and laziness I want to keep it plugged in and toggle the connection to the computer only when needed. I noticed that it's charging and usable when it is plugged in and the computer is shut down or suspened. So I guess that there's a way to do it. • ARC, worth it or not?

  When I moved to Objective C (iOS) from C++ (and little Java) I had hard time understanding memory management in iOS. But now all this seems natural and I know retain, autorelease, copy and release stuff. After reading about ARC, I am wondering is there more benefits of using ARC or it is just that you dont have to worry about memory management. Before moving to ARC I wanted to know how worth is moving to ARC. XCode has "Convert to Objective C ARC" menu. Is the conversion is that simple (nothing to worry about)? Does it help me in reducing my apps memory foot-print, memory leaks etc (somehow ?) Does it has much testing impact on my apps ? What are non-obvious advantages? Any Disadvantage os moving to it?

I've discovered that if I write the track out as: #EXTINFUTF8:76,Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn #EXTINF:76,Señor Coconut Y Su Conjunto - Introducciõn #UTF8:01-Introducciõn.mp3 01-Introducciõn.mp3 Then the music player will read it correctly and play the track. My problem is that I can't find the information I need to be able to do the conversion properly.

• Why is Harvest being purchased at all?

  Does your work environment use Harvest SCM? I've used this now at two different locations and find it appalling. In one situation I wrote a conversion script so I could use CVS locally and then daily import changes to the Harvest system while I was sleeping. The corp was fanatic about using Harvest, despite 80% of the programmers crying for something different. It was needlessly complicated, slow and heavy. It is now a job requirement for me that Harvest is not in use where I work. Has anyone else used Harvest before? What's your experience? As bad as mine? Did you employ other, different workarounds? Why is this product still purchased today?

• C# Image.Clone to byte[] causes EDIT.COM to open on Windows XP

  It appears that cloning a Image and converting it to a byte array is causing EDIT.COM to open up on Windows XP machines. This does not happen on a Windows 7 machine. The application is a C# .NET 2.0 application. Does anyone have any idea why this may be happening? • Optional structural typing possibilty in C++ or anyother language?

  In C++ how to tell compiler that Ogre::Vector3 IS_SAME_AS SomeOtherLIB::Vector3 ? I feel that.. in languages like c++ which are not structural typed but there are cases when it makes sense. Normally as game developer when working with 4+ libraries that provide sort or their own Vector3 implementation. The code is littered with ToOgre, ToThis, ToThat conversion function. Thats a lot of Float3 copying around which should not happen on first place. Is in C++ or any other languages where we dont have to convert (copying) from one type to another which is essentially the samething. But any solution in C++ as most of the good gamedevs libs are for c/c++.

• Help translating Reflector deconstruction into compilable code

  So I am Reflector-ing some framework 2.0 code and end up with the following deconstruction fixed (void* voidRef3 = ((void*) &_someMember)) { ... } This won't compile due to 'The right hand side of a fixed statement assignment may not be a cast expression' I understand that Reflector can only approximate and generally I can see a clear path but this is a bit outside my experience. Question: what is Reflector trying to describe to me? Update: Am also seeing the following fixed (IntPtr* ptrRef3 = ((IntPtr*) &this._someMember)) Update: So, as Mitch says, it is not a bitwise operator, but an addressOf operator. Question is now: fixed (IntPtr* ptrRef3 = &_someMember) fails with an 'Cannot implicitly convert type 'xxx*' to 'System.IntPtr*'. An explicit conversion exists (are you missing a cast?)' compilation error. So I seemed to be damned if I do and damned if I dont. Any ideas?

• Storing DateTime (UTC) vs. storing DateTimeOffset

  I usually have an "interceptor" that right before reading/writing from/to the database does datetime conversion (from UTC to localtime, and from localtime to utc), so I can use DateTime.Now (derivations and comparisions) throughout the system without worrying about timezones. Regarding serialization and moving data between computers, there is no need to bother, as the datetime is always UTC. Should I continue storing my dates (SQL 2008 - datetime) in UTC format or should I instead store it using DateTimeOffset (SQL 2008 - datetimeoffset)? UTC Dates in the database (datetime type) have been working and known for so long, why change it? What are the advantages? I have already looked into articles like this one, but I'm not 100% convinced though. Any thoughts?

• Good documentation tool that is not Latex?

  I am far from being a expert in Latex but I'm ok to document my projects with it. Though I would seldom find people in the corporate word eager to learn latex and going along with the documentation. 99% of the cases they would just ask me the Word version of it. For technical documentation I find less resistance, but still, whenever I start a project with someone not familiar with latex, the starting up is troublesome. That said, latex is a bit of an oversize tool for my needs really. My documents hardly go further from tables, lists, few images and type styles (although I'd love to still be able to produce hyperlinked PDFs). What are other tools there, simpler and with a easier learning curve than Latex, but still PDF worthy and with minimally decent capabilities? It also has to run on windows :( Oh. yeah, MSWord is not an option ;)

  The question is rather simple. I know that there is SQLite. There is Core Data also. But I need something in between. More object-oriented than SQLite API and simplier than Core Data. Main points are: I need access to stored entities only by id. No queries required. I need to store items of a single type, it means that I can use only one table if I choose SQLite. I want automatic object-relational conversion. Or object-storage if the storage is not relational. I can use object archiving, but I have to implement things (NSArchiver). But I want to write some kind of class and get persistence automatically. As it can be done with Hibernate/ActiveRecord/Core Data/etc. Thanks.

Thus the SWF is responsible for the creative layout of the screen the flash player. It is the results of this actions script, images, and textual data that need to be converted to a video format. Is anyone familiar with an online service that would be able to convert such .swf files that our site generates to a video format (say .avi, .mpeg, .mov). Or an application? • C++'s char * by swig got problem in Python 3.0

  Our C++ lib works fine with Python2.4 using Swig, returning a C++ char* back to a python str. But this solution hit problem in Python3.0, error is: Exception=(, UnicodeDecodeError('utf8', b"\xb6\x9d\xa.....",0, 1, 'unexpected code byte') Our definition is like(working fine in Python 2.4): void cGetPubModulus( void* pSslRsa, char* cMod, int* nLen ); %include "cstring.i" %cstring_output_withsize( char* cMod, int* nLen ); Suspect swig is doing a Bytes-Str conversion automatically. In python2.4 it can be implicit but in Python3.0 it's no long allowed.. Anyone got a good idea? thanks

  Hi How to design a business object? I have a library which returns me an Object which have ten lists of other different objects. I need to store it into database all. List of objects are often like: class Item { private int id; private String name; private double point; } But the name is often the same. Like basic title of the product or code. Containing from 3 characters up to 70characters. Should I make conversion for every Object to: (or something similar) class ConvertedItem { private int id; private int code; private double point; } And have a separated table of codes ( I guess around 60). Or do not bother with duplicated stuff? It's not mission critical app. What would you do in my case? thanks in advance
