• Cisco login on-failure using syslog doesn't show username on failure?

  interesting issue I am running into. I am trying to get syslog rmeote logging working with a Cisco switch. i have it working and logging for both on-success and on-failure. However when it is a failed login attempt it does not show the user name that tried to log in in the logs? • What are the differences between the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 and the S1300?

  Please can you tell me what the technical differences are between the Fujitsu ScanSnap S300 and the S1300 scanners? S300 = http://www.fujitsu.com/emea/products/scanners/scansnap/tmpl_scanners_scansnap-S300.html S1300 = http://www.fujitsu.com/emea/products/scanners/scansnap/tmpl_scanners_scansnap-S1300.html The only difference I can see is that the S300 has a CCD Image Sensor and the S1300 has a CIS Image Sensor. Other than that, the resolutions, pages per minute and physical sizes of both models are exactly the same. If so, is there a reason why I would want the S1300 instead of the cheaper S300? I just want a scanner for duplex document scanning, for home use (documents, receipts, etc.).

• Should I go with OpenGL to see my future in Game Development industry? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Should I continue studying OpenGL or just switch to DirectX to give me a better chance of landing a job in the game industry? I tried Google but found quite old articles, so I am in search of an answer in context to year 2012. Hi all, I don't know if you will consider this question appropriate for this community but I am constantly searching for a perfect answer. What I have seen is that most of the games that are released these days are DirectX 1x based. Except for few games like Starcraft or Diablo which don't have high end graphics are using OpenGL. So I have few questions to ask. The platforms i would like to target are PC (windows), Xbox 360 and PS3 (must). Should I go with learning OpenGL to see my future in game development industry? Or should I shift to Directx? If I learn OpenGL first, will it be difficult to learn direcx then? Which API is most suitable for indie development? Which one of the two API's are better from coder's (programmer's) point of view? Like OOP and style of coding. Is openGL being cross platform should be the only reason to choose it over Directx? Even when vendors are not providing enough stable drivers for it. Thanks in advance. I have read this post, but I have few questions. Should I continue studying OpenGL or just switch to DirectX to give me a better chance of landing a job in the game industry?

• Are copyright notices really required?

  Ever since I made my first web page 13 years ago I have followed the pattern of showing a copyright notice in the footer of each page. Over the years the format of this notice has changed in the following way; Copyright © <NAME> yyyy. All rights are reserved. Copyright © <NAME> yyyy © yyyy <NAME> © <NAME> This has generally mirrored the format used by Google. However, I recently noticed that they no longer display a copyright notice on their home page nor have one in their source code/meta tags. I see they still display it on most (if not all) other pages. I understand that Google are very keen to keep the word count down on their homepage, which could be the reason for this sacrafice, but my question is more general and relates to all websites. Since I've always just done it out of habit, I'm hoping someone can explain if/when I a copyright notice is actually required to protect your content and rights. Also, when it is required, is there a format in which the notice must adhere to in order to be valid?

• Monitoring remote laptops

  We're looking for something to monitor around 30 remote laptops that are constantly out on the road, never returning to base except for when there are serious hardware faults that need repairing. These laptops won't always be connected to the internet, they'll have mobile broadband and may work offline most of the time. They will be running a mixture of Windows XP, Vista and 7 and there is currently no server setup. We're primarily interested in making sure that Windows Updates and antivirus updates are happening, and I guess we should also be monitoring remaining disk space, what software is installed and ideally hardware health. It might also be nice if we could gain remote access to perform work on them. My main reason for wanting to monitor them is that it's going to be a real pain to get them back to base if anything goes wrong, so I want to be proactive in ensuring they last as long as possible. Can you recommend what I should be monitoring to ensure a long life? What tools would you use to monitor and maintain these computers?

• OpenVPN Bridge on pfsense: once LAN pings clients, connectivity breaks

  So I'm using a pfsense openvpn to bridge my LAN segment so VPN users can access the servers. The problem I'm having now is that I can establish a connection, I can ping the LAN server from the VPN, but as soon as I ping the client from the LAN server, there is no connectivity anymore between both parties. So: connect from the VPN client to the LAN = works ping the LAN from the VPN client = works access server from the VPN (ssh, ftp,...) = works ping client from server = doesn't work ping LAN from the VPN client = doesn't work anymore My bridge has em1 and ovpns1 bridged. I noted with tcpdump that ICMP is reaching the bridge between LAN and the VPN segment. But it's not put onto the em1 interface for some reason. My pfsense is running on an ESXi host with th vSwitch port enabled in promiscious mode. Firewall rules allow in and outbound traffic regardless origin or destination.

• Buying Dual Monitors of different size and resolution

  I'm about to go choose a dual monitor setup: 1) Is there any reason why I can't just walk out and buy the two TFT screens I like (a wide screen and a 'portrait' screen) and combine them? Mainly wide screen would be for gaming, and portrait for browsing. I'd want the desktop stretching from one to the other (ie drag pointer, apps from one screen to the other) 2) Also do I need separate gfx cards for each monitor or can one cover both? any performance cost? 3) And can I have separate background images for each, seeing as they'll be different resolutions?

• Can't set Windows XP background

  I have a Windows XP (Home) machine with a very weird problem. I cannot set the background image properly. That is, I can go to Desktop, Background image, select a different one, but the background has still the same solid colour. Now if I kill explorer.exe, I can see the background image correctly, but starting explorer.exe gives me the solid colour background back again. If I go to Desktop, Customise Desktop, Web, there is a checkbox at the bottom called "Fix desktop icons" or something like this (not sure how it's called in the English version.) If I enable this checkbox, I can see the background, but the desktop icons are drawn with solid-colour backgrounds (even though I have the "draw icon labels transparently" option set.) If I disable the checkbox, I have no desktop background. Active Desktop is disabled. Any idea how to fix this and what might be the reason for this behaviour in the first place?

• How to send local mail via postfix to another server

  I have postfix set up for use as an STMP server to send mail for my domain, but I receive email for the domain via gmail/google apps. The reason I use my own postfix is because I send out a lot of transactional emails to my customers using a web app, and the volume would exceed what google allows with its SMTP servers. Everything works fine, except cron & system mail gets routed to local users on the server, not to the appropriate accounts at google mail. How can I route this system mail to the respective google mail accounts instead?

• How do I install Red5 using apt-get? Getting sub-process error

  This is copy from question of some guy on other forum that never got satisfiably answered. I encountered the same error few days ago on Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop. It seems like Red5 is installed but it cannot be run for some reason. Can anyone explain what is going on here? Why should dpkg fail? I mean, this is checked repo, it should work fine. apt-get install red5-server Selecting previously deselected package red5-server. (Reading database ... 53491 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking red5-server (from .../red5-server_0.9.1-4squeeze1_all.deb) ... Setting up red5-server (0.9.1-4squeeze1) ... • Installing Windows Mobile SDK without Visual Studio

  Is it possible to install the Windows Mobile SDK without having Visual Studio? I am using SharpDevelop to write a Windows Mobile application, but I need to use an assembly in the Windows Mobile 6.0 SDK. When I try to install the SDK I get a message that says Visual Studio is a prerequisite, and I am un able to install it. Is there a way to trick it in to thinking Visual Studio is installed; maybe a registry entry that can be added or something, or am I just hosed? Is there a reason I need to pay for Microsoft's IDE, or is this just a way for Microsoft to make some extra money? Thanks,

• Empty /var/log after running cron bash script

  I wrote a little bash script and all of a sudden my /var/log folder is completely empty except for the log I created for the bash script. • httpd running as _www instead of www as it used to

  OSX Mountain Lion and Apache 2.2.22. I have always had the httpd.conf set as: User www Group www and it was running as such. Until today. Rebooted the server for another reason and when I tried to make some changes to a website via FTP this evening, it said access denied. Got to looking at the processes and httpd is now running as _www. WTH? Now of course all of my users are getting denied messages I assume because they were all created and permitted with the www user, not _www. Any idea why this happened or what I may have done to cause it?

  In web design , it's usually needed to design an image for example in Photoshop and then use multiple sizes of it. but I don't understand something here : When I resize the image (PNG or JPG) and reduce the dimensions of that in Photoshop , the image quality extremely gets reduced and the edges become messy while resizing the image in a simple software like Microsoft Paint gives a really better output! So what's the reason ? Is there a trick in Photoshop for image resizing which I've missed? Thanks for your help.   I often get asked following question? “How much data SQL Server can handle?” Every single time when I get this question – I ask back following question - “How much data your storage system can handle?” The reason I ask this question back is because in reality for enterprise systems the limitation of storage is no more an issue. The Matter of the fact most of the database is now a days limited by the size of the storage system. SQL Server is enterprise system and it is very mature product. Even though if you still want to know what is the actual limit here is the answer. SQL Server 2008R2, 2012 and 2014 have maximum capacity of 524 PB (Petabyte) in the Enterprise, BI and Standard edition. SQL Server Express has a limitation of 10 GB due to its nature. I guess, now when you look at my question it will make sense that it is all depending on the size of your storage system. I personally believe at this point of time 524 PB is quite a huge data, but we never know after 10 years when we read this blog post, we all may think what was I thinking actually. • Little mysterious RowMatch

  Incidentally this was the first piece of code i ever wrote in ADF.The requirement was we have tax rates which are read from a table.And there can be different type of tax rates called certificates or exceptions based on the rate_type column in the tax rates table.The simplest design i chose was to create an EO on the tax rates table and create two VO's called CertificateVO and ExceptionVO based on the same EO.So far so good.I wrote all the business logic in the EO and completed the model project.The CertificateVO has the query as select * from tax_rates TaxRateEO where rate_type='CERTIFICATE' and similary the ExceptionVO is also built.The UI is pretty simple and it has two tabs called Certificates and Exceptions and each table has a button to create a tax rate.The certificate tab is driven by CertificateVO and exception tab is driven by ExceptionVO.The CertificateVO has default value of rate_type set to 'CERTIFICATE' and ExceptionVO has default value of rate_type to 'EXCEPTION' to default values for new records.So far so good.But on running the UI i noticed a strange thing,When i create a new row in Certificate i see the same row in Exception too and vice-versa.i.e; what ever row i create in one VO it also appears in the second one although it shouldn't be.I couldn't understand the reason for behavior even though an explicit where clause is present.Digging through documentation i found that ADF doesnt apply the where clause to new rows instead it applies something called as RowMatch to them.RowMatch in simple terms is a where condition applied to the VO rows at runtime.Since we had both VO's based on the same EO we have the same entity cache.The filter factor for new rows to be shown in VO at runtime is actually RowMatch than the where clause defined in the VO.The default RowMatch is empty as a result any new row appears in both the VO's since its from same entity cache.The solution to this problem is to use polymorphic view objects which can do the row filter based on configuration or override the getRowMatch() method in the VOImpl and pass the custom where filter instead of default RowMatch.Eg:@Overridepublic RowMatch getRowMatch(){    return new RowMatch("rate_type='CERTIFICATE'");}similarly for ExceptionVO too.With proper RowMatch in place new rows will route themselves to appropriate VO.PS: The behavior(Same row pushed to both VO's from entity cache) is also called as ViewLink Consistency.Try it out!

• Configuration of Sonicwall Load Balancing

  We installed a Sonicwall NSA 240 appliance and have configured it up for our SSL VPN connection and for load balancing with 2 ADSL lines. Over the past week, I have been testing the load balancing options to optimize the connection speeds for our users - but I've run into the following: Round Robin load balancing is the ideal load balancing setting and it's roughly doubling our throughput- but, when it's active users are unable to access any SSL enabled websites such as banking, web-mail, etc. For this reason, I have been using percentage based balancing as it allows me to enable source and destination IP binding, which doesn't 'break' any secure connections but were left with the slow connection speeds we had before adding the second line. I'm looking for a method in which we can take advantage of the round robin connection speeds while allowing users to access sites with SSL certificates, all while still allowing our remote (vpn) users to connect. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

  Does SELinux make Redhat more secure? I can't remember the number of times when I have disabled SELinux because it kept frustrating my ability to get stuff running. Lots of times to there was no obvious reason why stuff wasn't working and I had to Google to discover why. Given that most casual users will disable or weaken security when it appears to get in the way, with the exclusion of serious, enterprisey Redhat users, is SELinux really useful? PS. Is there some tool that helps you log, track and manage SELinux issues across all applications? In spite of being an Ubuntu user I am a closet Fedora fan.

• Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10 in a VirtualBox: Gnome desktop not working

  I had Ubuntu 13.04 running in a VirtualBox (the host is WinXP). I've upgraded it to 13.10 but I've some issues: Gnome desktop is not working correctly (I can log in but the main menu bar remains empty - I can only log out with CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE) I cannot build and install the VirtualBox Guest Addons: When trying to build it, it says: me@virtuntu:/etc/init.d$ sudo ./vboxadd setup Removing existing VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done. Removing existing VirtualBox non-DKMS kernel modules ...done. Building the VirtualBox Guest Additions kernel modules The headers for the current running kernel were not found. If the following module compilation fails then this could be the reason. Building the main Guest Additions module ...done. Building the shared folder support module ...fail! (Look at /var/log/vboxadd-install.log to find out what went wrong) Doing non-kernel setup of the Guest Additions ...done. • Rhino Mocks, AssertWasCalled with Arg Constraint on array parameter

  Today, I had a hard time unit testing a function to make sure a Method with some array parameters was called. Method to be called : void AddUsersToRoles(string[] usernames, string[] roleNames);   I had previously used Arg<T>.Matches on complex types in other unit tests, but for some reason I was unable to find out how to apply the same logic with an array of strings.   It is actually quite simple to do, T really is a string[], so we use Arg<string[]>. • Monitor network connectivity in WP7 apps

  Most interesting Windows Phone apps rely on some network service for their functionality. So at some point in your app you may need to know programmatically if there is network connection available or not. For example, the Translator by Moth app relies on the Bing Translation service for translations. When a request for translation (text or voice) is made, the network call may fail. The failure reason is not evident from any of the return results, so I check the connection to see if it is present. Dependent on that, a different message is shown to the user. Before the translation phase is even reached, at the app start up time the Bing service is queried for its list of  languages; in that case I don't want to show the user a message and instead want to be notified when the network is available in order to send the query out again. So for those two requirements (which I imagine are common in other apps) I wrote a simple wrapper MyNetwork static class to the framework APIs: Call once MyNetwork.MonitorNetworkAvailability() method so it monitors the network change At any time check the MyNetwork.IsConnected property to check for network presence Subscribe to its MyNetwork.ConnectionEstablished event Optionally, during debugging use its MyNetwork.ChangeStatus method to simulate a change in network status As usual, there may be better ways to achieve this, but this class works perfectly for my scenarios. • can't open web pages in google chrome

  When I type in google chrome "google.com" I receive such error: 404. That’s an error. The requested URL /cgi-bin/authme?s=0.2068704296834766 was not found on this server. That’s all we know. It seems I'm redirected somehow by some reason. Probably lenovo notebook problem? At the same time IE works fine. This problem reproducable with other webpages too, for example i'm redirected from vkontakte.ru to such web page which doesn't exist too http://www.vkontakte.ru/cgi-bin/authme?s=0.7140683813486247 Also I see such message when chrome starts "Lütfen yönlendirilirken bekleyin", this is very strange because I only have russian and english languages installed in system.

And Silverlight only works in a web browser. A VMWare-type solution won't cut it either. Here's the subjective part (and might get this closed): is there any semi-authoritative answer to why Microsoft just doesn't support .NET on the Mac itself? It would seem like they could Silverlight and/or buy Mono and quickly be there. No need for native Visual Studio; cross-compiling and remote debugging is fine. The reason is that where I work there is a growing amount of Uncertainty about the future which is causing a lot more development to be done in C++ instead of C#; brand new projects are chosing to use C++. Nobody wants to tell management 18–24 months from now "sorry" should the Mac (or iPad) become a requirement. C++ is seen as the safer option, even if it (arguably) means a loss in productivity today.
