• Type App Name To Launch/Activate in Win 8.1?

  Early versions of Windows 8 had this amazingly useful feature: Hit the Windows Key Type the first few letters of an application name Hit Enter to activate it (make it frontmost) If the application was not already running, it would launch it. This still happens, even in Windows 8.1. But if the application was already running, it would still be brought to the front. This is broken in Windows 8.1 (It was also broken in later versions of Windows 8.) Has anyone found a fix for this? So that the application is always brought frontmost, whether or not it is already running?

He says that: The first thing I usually do is disable system restore. Some REALLY nasty malware hides in there and is very difficult to delete. As far as rescue media, I make a full backup image. I'd like to find something that automatically adds this info in the access request, without specific configurations on VTY lines dedicated to SSH and to Telnet. Any idea about that?

• Multiple "My Documents" folders?

  I am having the issue, where, I have 2 folders called "My Documents". I recently edited my registry to make "Document" link in the Windows 7 start menu be a FOLDER link and not a LIBRARY link.. • Mini keyboard has no home/end keys; how to type them?

  Some months ago I needed a small keyboard and bought an Okion KM229 without noticing that it has no Home or End key. This makes it tricky to type as I'm so used to using these keys. I haven't yet figured out if there is a key combination that issues Home and End keystrokes. Does anyone have experience of these keyboards and know how to issue those keystrokes? The keyboard is used on a PC running Windows XP. I have used the contact form on the Okion USA web site to ask this question but received no response. Wikipedia suggests that Home and End keystrokes are issued with Fn-Left and Fn-Right on some limited size keyboards. I may have tried those but don't remember for sure. I will try them again though when I am on site again in a week or so. Any other thoughts would be welcomed in the meantime.

  Hi I am looking to release a website that will initially have large amounts of uploads from users. The first will be 65GB and the rest will probably be close to 1TB. They could happen simultaneously. My question is what type of amazon server instance would be best for this? The website is just being released so the traffic wont be very high. I have been using a micro instance for development but it is time to launch and I need more power. Should I use auto scaling and a load balancer to increase the number of instances when I need it or Will a small or medium instance do the trick? If I do use auto scaling and load balancing how do I handle things like sessions and the database/file lookups? Does one instance become the primary instance and the rest become clones?

  Given the following physical layout for a .NET web application: DB (sql server, windows) - No public route (no table access, only stored procs) Web Service DAL (iis, windows) - No public route (can be accessed by web server via port 80 and 443) Web Server (iis, windows) - Public route (only via port 80 and 443) What type(s) / examples of attack could be used to compromise the public web server but would be blocked by the Web Service DAL? i.e. can you think of concrete attack types that the DAL stops? Please note, I am interested only in the security aspect, not scaling / fault tolerance / performance / etc. In my mind if the web server has been compromised using an attack over port 80/443, then the same attack would work over port 80/443 to the Web Service DAL box.

I am not clear as what software can be used for this on Linux or Windows. I have users which use Windows and Linux both. I have used video editing on Mac using Final Cut Pro but the video on the above link is not some thing which can be achieved with FCP.(Or may be I am not aware) I am looking solution for 1) Linux users 2) Windows users In case of Linux it is Ubuntu for some users and Fedora for some others. I am a Linux guy so I am specifically posting this question in terms of Ubuntu but I also need suggestions for Windows type of users.I have no clue of such video animations at all.

• Can you set up a Linode VPS as a reseller type scenario?

  First, I'm a fairly green on this subject. So, go easy. I do web design and development and would like to set up a way to be the central host so to speak for my clients. Currently they are scattered across multiple hosting companies. I've looked at some the cheapy options like a LunarPages and some of the more robust options like RackSpace Cloud and Linode. RackSpace has a reseller program, but it's managed and more at the top end on cost. I'm not seeing any type of reseller program in place for Linode. Can I purchase a higher Linode plan and use Apache2's VirtualHost configuration to handle multiple domains (about 8 domains, but hopefully will grow.). Or, am I not thinking about this correctly?

  I have written a Linux GUI application in Python that needs to do some cleanup tasks before being terminated when the user logs out. Unfortunately it seems, that on logout, all applications are killed. I tried both to handle POSIX signals and DBUS notifications, but nothing worked. Any idea what I could have made wrong? On application startup I register some termination handlers: # create graceful shutdown mechanisms signal.signal(signal.SIGTERM, self.on_signal_term) self.bus = dbus.SessionBus() self.bus.call_on_disconnection(self.on_session_disconnect) When the user logs out, neither self.on_signal_term nor self.on_session_disconnect are called. • VPS with Debian Squeeze cannot forwward email - Name service error for name=gmail.com type=MX: Host not found, try again

  I have postfix set-up on my Debian VPS, I can: send emails receive emails on my server But forwarding emails from my server to gmail does not work! I configured google's DNS through /etc/resolv.conf I can ping google.com and with dig I also find gmail MX records. But when my server tries to forward email to gmail (setup with /etc/aliases) I get the following error: postfix/smtp[20280]: 825E117BA8A80: to=<[email protected]>, orig_to=<[email protected]>, relay=none, delay=40, delays=0/0.01/40/0, dsn=4.4.3, status=deferred (Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=gmail.com type=MX: Host not found, try again) What am I missing? Any help will be greatly appreciated!

• General Overview of Design Pattern Types

  Typically most software engineering design patterns fall into one of three categories in regards to types. Three types of software design patterns include: Creational Type Patterns Structural Type Patterns Behavioral Type Patterns The Creational Pattern type is geared toward defining the preferred methods for creating new instances of objects. An example of this type is the Singleton Pattern. The Singleton Pattern can be used if an application only needs one instance of a class. In addition, this singular instance also needs to be accessible across an application. The benefit of the Singleton Pattern is that you control both instantiation and access using this pattern. The Structural Pattern type is a way to describe the hierarchy of objects and classes so that they can be consolidated into a larger structure. An example of this type is the Façade Pattern.  The Façade Pattern is used to define a base interface so that all other interfaces inherit from the parent interface. This can be used to simplify a number of similar object interactions into one single standard interface. The Behavioral Pattern Type deals with communication between objects. An example of this type is the State Design Pattern. The State Design Pattern enables objects to alter functionality and processing based on the internal state of the object at a given time.

You can find the introductory post here, the second post, on dependency injection here, a third one on Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) here and the latest so far, on writing custom extensions, here. This time we will talk about injecting simple values. An Inversion of Control (IoC) / Dependency Injector (DI) container like Unity can be used for things other than injecting complex class dependencies. It can also be used for setting property values or method/constructor parameters whenever a class is built. The main difference is that these values do not have a lifetime manager associated with them and do not come from the regular IoC registration store. Unlike, for instance, MEF, Unity won’t let you register as a dependency a string or an integer, so you have to take a different approach, which I will describe in this post.   How can I fix Update Manager in 12.04, which hangs when I try to install any update, while sudo apt-get upgrade works fine? I suspect it has something to do with my python installation. • Juju Openstack bundle: Can't launch an instance

  Deployed bundle:~makyo/openstack/2/openstack, on top of 7 physical boxes and 3 virtual ones. After changing vip_iface strings to point to right devices, e.g., br0 instead of eth0, and defining "/mnt/loopback|30G", in Cinder's block-device string, am able to navigate through openstack dashboard, error free. • What are the packages/libraries I should install before compiling Python from source?

  Once in a while I need to install a new Ubuntu (I used it both for desktop and servers) and I always forget a couple of libraries I should have installed before compiling, meaning I have to recompile, and it's getting annoying. So now I want to make a complete list of all library packages to install before compiling Python (and preferably how optional they are). This is the list I compiled with below help and by digging in setup.py. It is complete for Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 at least: build-essential (obviously) libz-dev (also pretty common and essential) libreadline-dev (or the Python prompt is crap) libncursesw5-dev libssl-dev libgdbm-dev libsqlite3-dev libbz2-dev More optional: tk-dev libdb-dev Ubuntu has no packages for v1.8.5 of the Berkeley database, nor (for obvious reasons) the Sun audio hardware, so the bsddb185 and sunaudiodev modules will still not be built on Ubuntu, but all other modules are built with the above packages installed. Python 2.5 and Python 2.6 also needs to have LDFLAGS set on Ubuntu 11.04 and later, to handle the new multi-arch layout: export LDFLAGS="-L/usr/lib/$(dpkg-architecture -qDEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)" For Python 2.6 and 2.7 you also need to explicitly enable SSL after running the ./configure script and before running make. • Game Center Leaderboard not dismissing

  I was implementing Game Center into my app and all was going well except for the leaderboard done button not dismissing the leaderboard even with gameCenterControllerDidFinish added in. • Broadcom BCM4313 takes ages to connect

  I'm having issues with my broadcom BCM4313 wireless adapter. Everything works just fine when connected (with additional drivers & Connman), but it takes about 5 minutes to connect to my network when i just started my computer! When resuming from hibernation it goes very quick though, so just when I boot my pc it's taking forever... • Ubiquitous Language and Custom types

  Note that my question is referring to those attributes that even on their own already represent a concept ( ie on their own provide a cohesive meaning ). Thus such attribute needs no additional functional support and as such is self-contained. I'm also well-aware that even with self-contained attributes the custom types may prove beneficial ( for example, they give the ability to add new behavior later, when business requirements change ). Thus, my question focuses only on whether custom types for self-contained attributes really enrich Ubiquitous Language UL a) I've read that in most cases, even simple, self-contained attributes should have custom, more descriptive types rather than basic value types ( double, string ... ), because among other things, descriptive types add to the UL, while the use of basic types instead weakens the language. I understand the importance of UL, but how does having a basic type for a self-contained attribute weaken the language, since with self-contained attributes the name of the attribute already adequately describes the concept and thus contributes to the UL vocabulary? For example, the term person_age already adequately explains the concept of quantifying the number of years a person has: class Person { string person_age; } so what could we possibly gain by also introducing the term ThingAge to the UL: class person { ThingAge person_age; } thanks

• Software center is not working after attempt to install skype

  I am completely new person on Linux. I installed it just today and i have to say I like them a lot, until I faced the problem. I was looking on the internet but nothing worked for me. After i downloaded skype and tried to run it, software center showed up and was loading something for 5 mins. then it just dessapeared. Now everytime I try to turn it on, the window is gone after 3 sec. I tried to kill it but didnt really wokrked. • Observing MVC, can/should the Model be instantiated in the ViewController? Or where?

  I'm writing an experimental iPhone app to learn about the MVC paradigm. I instantiate my Model class in the ViewController class. Is this stupid? I'm asking because storing the id of the Model class, and using it works where it's initialized, but referring to it later (in response to an interface action) crashes. Seemingly, the pointer address of my Model class instance changes, but how can that be?
