  • Ethernet card not detected on Ubuntu Server 12.04

    My onboard ethernet isn't detected after a re-install of Server 12.04. For reasons I won't get into here, I had to put the server's drive into another machine to install Ubuntu, then swap back into the server. So the server starts up fine, except for the "Waiting for network configuration". I read in another article that Server, by default, doesn't handle new mac addresses for hardware changes dynamically, unlike Ubuntu Desktop, but a look at /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules shows only one ethernet interface. Shouldn't it show both the old, and the new? lspci -vv shows an ethernet interface, so what the heck is going on? I should mention that the onboard LAN is enabled in the BIOS. And I know this isn't important, but all this started when I changed some network configuration settings in webmin before the re-install. It couldn't download any updates, so I tinkered a little. Broke, it, installed FreeNAS, which worked, but I didn't like it, then went back to Ubuntu Server, and now I'm in this pickle. Thanks for any advice!

  • How to manage own bots at the server?

    There is a game server and people can play in game rooms of 2, 3 or 4. When a client connects to server he can send a request specifying a number of people or range he wants to play with. One of this value is valid: {2-4, 2-3, 3-4, 2, 3, 4} So the server maintains 3 separate queues for game room with 2, 3 and 4 people. So we can denote queues as #2, #3 and #4. It work the following way. If a client sends request, 3-4, then two separate request are added to queues #3 and #4. If queue #3 now have 3 requests from different people then game room with 3 players is created, and all other requests from those players are removed from all queues. Right now not many people are online simultaneously, so they apply for a game wait for some time and quit because game does not start in a reasonable time. That's a simple bot for beginning has been developed. So there is a need to patch server code to run a bot, if some one requests a game, but humans are not online. Input: request from human {2-4, 2-3, 3-4, 2, 3, 4} Output: number of bots to run and time to wait for each before connecting, depending on queues state. The problem is that I don't know how to manage bots properly at the server? Example: #3 has 1 request and #4 has 1 request Request from user is {3,4} then server can add one bot to play game with 3 people or two bots to play game of 4. Example: #3 has 1 request and #4 has 2 requests Request from user is {3,4} then in each case just one bot is needed so game with 4 players is more preferrable.

  • Turn-based Client-Server Card Game - Unicast (TCP) or Multicast (UDP)

    I am currently planning to make a card game project where the clients will communicate with the server in a turn-based and synchronous manner using messages sent over sockets. The problem I have is how to handle the following scenario: (Client takes it turn and sends its action to server) Client sends a message telling the server its move for the turn (e.g. plays the card 5 from its hand which needs to placed onto the table) Server receives messages and updates game state (server will hold all game state). Server iterates through a list of connected clients and sends a message to tell of them change in state Clients all refresh to display the state This is all based on using TCP, and looking at it now it seems a bit like the Observer pattern. The reason this seems to be an issue to me is this message doesn't seem to be point-to-point like the others as I want to send it to all the clients, and doesn't seem very efficient sending the same message in that way. I was thinking about using multicasting with UDP as then I could send the message to all the clients, however wouldn't this mean that the clients would in theory be able to message each other? There is of course the synchronous aspect as well, though this could be put on top of the UDP I guess. Basically, I would like to know what would be good practice as this project is really all about learning, and even though it won't be big enough to encounter performance issues from this I would like to consider them anyway. However, please note I am not interested in using message oriented middleware as a solution (I have experience with using MOM and I'm interested in considering other options excluding MOM if TCP sockets is a bad idea!).

  • How to access Ubuntu Server from local PC?

    Today I installed my first web server, which is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I got Apache, PHP and MySql working, there is even MyPHPAdmin! Everything is working fine on that PC, but the problem is that I have no idea how to connect to this server from my PC. Just to clarify- I got one PC that I work on and got another one, which has Ubuntu Server running. I even managed to connect them through the router, which I made to work as a switch. I can see the Ubuntu Server on my Windows PC in "Network", but it's empty, I can't see any files. I tried to share a folder etc/www on Server, but it shows an error saying something about right, that I'm not this folder's owner. I guess I'm not doing the right thing at all, am I? Even if I could see shared folder on my Windows PC- I would still be not able to type "somedomain.com" on Windows PC and access for example index.php or MySql database. So, the question is- how do I configure Ubuntu Server to be accessible from Windows PC?

  • Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

    Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken.   • syspolicy_purge_history generates failed logins

    I have a development server with 3 instances: Default, A and B. It is a physical server, non clustered. Whenever the syspolicy_purge_history job runs at 2 am, I get failed login alerts. Looking at the job steps, all are successfully completed. It appears that some point during the step "Erase Phantom System Health Records" is when the failed logins occur. syspolicy_purge_history on instance B works OK. syspolicy_purge_history on the Default instance seems to want to connect to instance B, resulting in: Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-B'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . No errors are reported by Powershell. syspolicy_purge_history on the A instance seems to want to connect to the Default instance resulting in Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11. Login failed for user 'Machinename\sqlsvc-Default'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT: <local machine>] . I tried the steps posted here hoping they would fix it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955726 But again, this is not a virtual server nor is it in a cluster. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Will disabling hyperthreading improve performance on our SQL Server install

    Related to: Current wisdom on SQL Server and Hyperthreading Recently we upgraded our Windows 2008 R2 database server from an X5470 to a X5560. The theory is both CPUs have very similar performance, if anything the X5560 is slightly faster. However, SQL Server 2008 R2 performance has been pretty bad over the last day or so and CPU usage has been pretty high. Page life expectancy is massive, we are getting almost 100% cache hit for the pages, so memory is not a problem. We are experiencing a large amount of variance with query executions, typically many queries appear to be slower that they were on our previous DB server and CPU is really high. Will disabling Hyperthreading help at reducing our CPU usage and increase throughput?

  • SQL 2008 SP1 crashing almost daily

    Hey, almost every day our new DB crashes. It is virtual server residing on same hardware as 5 other servers, two of them beeing identical MS SQL2008sp1 and two Oracle 11g's so I can pretty much rule out hardware issues. Server has dedicated local LUN, 4vCPU and 8GB memory with 2GB windows swap file. It runs 4 instances. Primary instance is limited to 5GB memory and paralelism set to 4 running on MS SQL 2008 SP1 @ Windows Server 2008 Enterprise R2 x64. Only that primary instance is crashing. After it crashes nothing can connect to it, it's even impossible to shut it down through service manager. What I found in logs is: ***Stack Dump being sent to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\LOG\SQLDump0081.txt SqlDumpExceptionHandler: Process 4788 generated fatal exception c0000005 EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION.   • Directory service unavailiable, new hardware same settings

    I'm working on a project with 2 sites connected by a VPN. Site 1 has the main server and there is a secondary server at site 2 which I am trying to replace. The current setup works perfectly however I can't for the life of me get the replacement server at site 2 up and running. I'm trying to replace like for like just upgraded hardware. I have installed the OS (all Server 2003 Standard SP2) and used exactly the same settings as the old server. I have setup Active Directory, DNS Server, DHCP Server and WINS Server configured. I have used all the same settings as the old server (except IP address and name). I can access the active directory but I can't do anything; add, edit, delete all returns "the directory service is unavaliable". No-one can login on any of the computers on site 2 and the internet is down. Plugging the old server back in and connecting it to the network rectifies the issue (so both new and old are connected at site 2), everyone can login and the internet is back (curious since the modem connects direct to the switch, and even with the new server online I can connect to the router via IP but not the net). I really don't have much experience but I've been roped into doing this because my company is too cheap to hire a real network admin. Any suggestions of where I can start to troubleshoot this, its driving me crazy and I only have a day before all the users are back on site.

  • Hourly SQL Server 2005 Slowness (Possibly caused by SYSTEM)

    We're trying to diagnose the cause of slowness on our Database server. We're running the latest rev SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2008x64. The behavior that we're seeing is this: We see the SYSTEM process spike one of the CPUs for about 2 minutes, during this time SQL server slows down by a factor of 10. The slowness lasts until SYSTEM is done, then in an hour everything starts again. During these slowdowns disk writes don't spike, paging doesn't spike, the only noticeable precursor we see is that SYSTEM maxes out one of the sixteen (HT)CPUs. Note that this doesn't happen at the top of the hour, it just happens once an hour, and it shifts a bit depending on the length of the incident. At the moment this is causing intermittent slowdowns, but when the server is really busy it can cause Worker Thread starvation. The server is a Dual Quad Dell R710 with 96GB of RAM and RAID10 data/log disks. Has anyone experienced this kind of problem? Does anyone know where we should look? This works, but when I examine the proxy logs the User-Agent string ("WinHTTP AutoProxy Sample/1.0") is not being sent as part of the CONNECT. It is however sent as part of the POST. Could someone please tell me how I can change this code to have the User-Agent header sent during both the CONNECT and POST? Edited to add: we are observing this problem only on Windows 7. If we run the same code on a Windows Vista box, we can see the User-Agent header being sent on CONNECT.

    I was having a running Solr 4.1 on Windows Server 2008 R2. The Solr is deployed on Tomcat. However, today it stops suddenly, and while accessing Solr it gives following error.     I am going to build a full height server machine to be used for SQL Server 2008 64bit. I have $400 to spend for a CPU. Which CPU should I get among i5, i7, Xeon and Phenom in terms of performance. There are so many options and I am out of touch with the latest stuff. All I know I want something fast and works with DDR3 fast memory and works with some kind of fast system bus. I don't care about overclocking, 3D & gfx benchmarks. The machine is not used for games and gfx apps. Any recommendations?

    Did you know you can "print an outline?" You can print any outline or portion of an outline. Why might you want to "print an outline" in UPK... Have you ever wondered how many topics you have recorded, how many of your topics are ready for review, or even better, how many topics are complete! Do you need to report your project status to management? Maybe you just like to have a copy of your outline to refer to during development. Included in this output is the outline structure as well as the layout defined in the Details View of the Outline Editor. To print an outline, you must open either a module or section in the Outline Editor. A set of default data columns is automatically included in the output; however, you can configure which columns you want to appear in the report by switching to the Details view and customizing the columns. (To learn more about customizing your columns refer to the Add and Remove Columns section of the Content Development.pdf guide) To print an outline from the Outline Editor: 1. Open a module or section document in the Outline Editor. 2. Expand the documents to display the details that you want included in the report. 3. On the File menu, choose Print and use the toolbar icons to print, view, or save the report to a file. Personally, I opt to save my outline in Microsoft Excel. Using the delivered features of Microsoft Excel you can add columns of information, such as development notes, to your outline or you can graph and chart your Project status. As mentioned above you can configure what columns you want to appear in the outline. When utilizing the Print an Outline feature in conjunction with the Managing Workflow features of the UPK Multi-user instance you as a Team Lead or Author can better report project status. Managing Workflow: The Properties toolpane contains special properties that allow authors to track document status or State as well as assign Document Ownership. Assign Content State The State property is an editable property for communicating the status of a document. This is particularly helpful when collaborating with other authors in a development team. Authors can assign a state to documents from the master list defined by the administrator. The default list of States includes (blank), Not Started, Draft, In Review, and Final. Administrators can customize the list by adding, deleting or renaming the values. To assign a State value to a document: 1. Make sure you are working online. 2. Display the Properties toolpane. 3. Select the document(s) to which you want to assign a state. Note: You can select multiple documents using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click). 4. In the Workflow category, click in the State cell. 5. Select a value from the list. Assign Document Ownership In many enterprises, multiple authors often work together developing content in a team environment. Team leaders typically handle large projects by assigning specific development responsibilities to authors. The Owner property allows team leaders and authors to assign documents to themselves and other authors to track who is responsible for a specific document. You view and change document assignments for a document using the Owner property in the Properties toolpane. To assign a document owner: 1. Make sure you are working online. 2. On the View menu, choose Properties. 3. Select the document(s) to which you want to assign document responsibility. Note: You can select multiple documents using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click). 4. In the Workflow category, click in the Owner cell. 5. Select a name from the list.     Ah the beautiful data model. They say a picture is worth a 1,000 words. And then we have our diagrams, how many words are they worth? Our friends from the Human Relations sample schema So our models describe how the data ‘works’ – whether that be at a logical-business level, or a technical-physical level. Developers like to say that their code is self-documenting. These would be very lazy or very bad (or both) developers. Models are the same way, you should document your models with comments and notes! I have 3 basic options: Comments Comments in RDBMS Notes So what’s the difference? Comments You’re describing the entity/table or attribute/column. This information will NOT be published in the database. It will only be available to the model, and hence, folks with access to the model. Table Comments (in the design only!) Comments in RDBMS You’re doing the same thing as above, but your words will be stored IN the data dictionary of the database. Oracle allows you to store comments on the table and column definitions. So your awesome documentation is going to be viewable to anyone with access to the database. RDBMS is an acronym for Relational Database Management System – of which Oracle is one of the first commercial examples If the DDL is produced and ran against a database, these comments WILL be stored in the data dictionary. Notes A place for you to add notes, maybe from a design meeting. Or maybe you’re using this as a to-do or requirements list. Basically it’s for anything that doesn’t literally describe the object at hand – that’s what the comments are for. I totally made these up. Now these are free text fields and you can put whatever you want here. Just make sure you put stuff here that’s worth reading. And it will live on…forever.

    How do I realize a UA string block by regular expression in the config files of my Apache webserver? For example: if I would like to block out all bots from Apache on my debian server, that have the regular expression /\b\w+[Bb]ot\b/ or /Spider/ in their user-agent. Those bots should not be able to see any page on my server and they should not appear neither in the accesslogs nor in the errorlogs. http://global-security.blogspot.de/2009/06/how-to-block-robots-before-they-hit.html supposes to uses mod_security for that, but isn't there a simple directive for http.conf?

  • Advanced Search Stored procedure

    So I am working on an MVC ASP.NET web application which centers around lots of data and data manipulation. PROBLEM OVERVIEW: We have an advanced search with 25 different filter criteria. I am using a stored procedure for this search. The stored procedure takes in parameters, filter for specific objects, and calculates return data from those objects. It queries large tables 14 millions records on some table, filtering and temp tables helped alleviate some of the bottle necks for those queries. ISSUE: The stored procedure used to take 1 min to run, which creates a timeout returning 0 results to the browser. I rewrote the procedure and got it down to 21 secs so the timeout does not occur. This ONLY occurs this slow the FIRST time the search is run, after that it takes like 5 secs. I am wondering should I take a different approach to this problem, should I worry about this type of performance issue if it does not timeout?

  • How can I see logs in a server after a kernel panic hang ?

    I am running a production gentoo Linux machine, and recently there was a situation where the server hung in my co-located premises and when I got there I noticed that the server was hung on what appeared to be a kernel panic hang. I rebooted the machine with a hard reboot and was disappointed to find out that I could not find a shred of evidence anywhere on why the machine hung. Is it true that when I do a hard reboot the messages itself will get lost or is there a setting I can do somewhere say in syslog-ng or maybe in sysctl to at least preserve the error log so that I can prevent such mishaps from happening in the future ? I am running a 2.6.x kernel by the way. Thanks in advance.

    I'm trying to use a simple batch script to backup a local instance of SQL Express 2012, as follows: @echo off SET BACKUP_DIR=E:\BackupData SET SERVER=.\\sqlexpress set dom=%date:~0,2% set month=%date:~3,2% set year=%date:~6,4% set file=%year%-%month%-%dom% sqlcmd -S %SERVER% -d master -Q "exec sp_msforeachdb 'BACKUP DATABASE [?] TO DISK=''%BACKUP_DIR%\?.Full.%file%.bak''' The script is failing to run with the following error: Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft SQL Server Native Client 10.0 : Client unable to establish connection due to prelogin failure. This is on Server 2008 R2, my SQL database (on localhost) instance is named SQLEXPRESS. There is an instance of SQL Express 2008 on the system (hence client 10.0). The database is configured to use a trusted connection, and the .net desktop software deployed on our network PCs is able to access the database without any problem. Am I missing something obvious here, I've done a fair amount of searching for this error message, and haven't found anything that has been particularly useful so far.
