• Please help optimizing a long running query (left outer join, with 2 subqueries)

  Hi all. The query I need help with is: SELECT d.bn, d.4700, d.4500, ... , p.`Activity Description` FROM ( SELECT temp.bn, temp.4700, temp.4500, .... FROM `tdata` temp GROUP BY temp.bn HAVING (COUNT(temp.bn) = 1) ) d LEFT OUTER JOIN ( SELECT temp2.bn, max(temp2.FPE) AS max_fpe, temp2.`Activity Description` FROM `pdata` temp2 GROUP BY temp2.bn ) p ON p.bn = d.bn; The ... represents other fields that aren't really important to solving this problem. The issue is on the the second subquery - it is not using the index I have created and I am not sure why, it seems to be because of the way TEXT fields are handled. The first subquery uses the index I have created and runs quite snappy, however an explain on the second shows a 'Using temporary; Using filesort'. Please see the indexes I have created in the below table create statements. Can anyone help me optimize this? By way of quick explanation the first subquery is meant to only select records that have unique bn's, the second, while it looks a bit wacky (with the max function there which is not being used in the result set) is making sure that only one record from the right part of the join is included in the result set. • Save object using variable with object name

  I'm wondering what an easy way is to save an object in R, using a variable objectName with the name of the object to be saved. I want this to easy save objects, with their name in the file name. I tried to use get, but I didn't manage to save the object with it's original object name. Example: If I have the object called "temp", which I want to save in the directory "dataDir". I put the name of the object in the variable "objectName". Attempt 1: objectName<-"temp" save(get(objectName), file=paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) load(paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) This didn't work, because R tries to save an object called get(objectName), instead of the result of this call. So I tried the following: Attempt 2: objectName<-"temp" object<-get(objectName) save(object, file=paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) load(paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) This obviously didn't work, because R saves the object with name "object", and not with name "temp". After loading I have a copy of "object", instead of "temp". (Yes, with the same contents...but that is not what I want :) ). So I thought it should be something with pointers. So tried the following: Attempt 3: objectName<-"temp" object<<-get(objectName) save(object, file=paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) load(paste(dataDir, objectName, ".RData", sep="")) Same result as attempt 2. But I'm not sure I'm doing what I think I'm doing. What is the solution for this?

The file.createNewFile(); creates the temp.htm file outside the .jar file So when editorPane.setPage(Program.class.getResource("temp.htm")); is called the file is not found as it searches for file inside the test package. How to setPage() the temp.htm file whiich is outside the .jar file but in the same folder as the .jar file? As the temp.htm is a localfile and I want a relative path instead of an absolute path.   In essence, will this code work? And before you say "Run it and see!", I just realized my cygwin didn't come with gcc and it's currently 40 minutes away from completing reinstallation. Why can I say words[i] = temp, instead of needing to allocate memory for words[i] the length of temp?

  I need to select a top row for each category from a known set (somewhat similar to this question). The problem is, how to make this query efficient on the large number of rows. For example, let's create a table that stores temperature recording in several places. I don't want extra columns like counts or anything, just a limited number of results, and it seems like it is not possible to directly LIMIT results in a JPQL query.   I want to generate some XML in a stored procedure based on data in a table. The following insert allows me to add many nodes but they have to be hard-coded or use variables (sql:variable): SET @MyXml.modify(' insert <myNode> {sql:variable("@MyVariable")} </myNode> into (/root[1]) ') So I could loop through each record in my table, put the values I need into variables and execute the above statement. But is there a way I can do this by just combining with a select statement and avoiding the loop? Edit I have used SELECT FOR XML to do similar stuff before but I always find it hard to read when working with a hierarchy of data from multiple tables. I was hoping there would be something using the modify where the XML generated is more explicit and more controllable.

• MS Access 2003 - Unbound Form uses INSERT statement to save to table; what about subforms?

  So I have an unbound form that I use to save data to a table on button click. Is there a way I can have subforms for entry that will allow me to save data to the table within that same button click? Basically I want to add more entry options for the user, and while I know other ways to do it, I am particularly curious about doing it this way (if it can be done). So lets say the 'parent form' is frmMain. And there are two child forms "sub1" and "sub2". Just for example sake lets say on frmMain there are two text boxes: txtTitle & txtAuthor. sub1 and sub2 both have a text Box on them that represent something like prices. The idea is Title & author of a book, and then a price at each store (simplified). I tried this and got an "Access cannot find the form "" ". I think I can pretty much see why on this approach too, because when I click the button that calls the new sub form into the parent form, the values that were just entered are not held/saved as sub1 closes and sub2 opens. I should mention that the idea above is not intended to be a one or the other approach, rather both sub forms used everytime. so this is an example. i want to use this method (if possible) to have about 7 different sub form choices in one form, and be able to save to a table via a SQL statement. I realize that there may be better ways, but I am just wondering if I can get there with this approach out of curiousity. Thanks as always!

AND it works, but only if an event fires the execute...function. What i need is kind of "execute initially", means that the function gets executed when the table initially loads. How can i do this? I'm using a MySql database, now how can I use the SchemaExport function in hibernate to create the tables? My application can't create the table automatically, though i have set <prop key="hbm2ddl.auto">create</prop>.   Are there any repositories around for open sourced iPhone components? For instance, I have found myself needing to create several new types of table cells to mimic some of Apple's existing functionality (for instance, all the different types of table cells present in the Settings application). I can't imagine I'm alone here. Where do you go to find open sourced reusable components, or do you just write and hoard your own? Update: I know there are open source full projects around (see this question), but rummaging through them and picking and choosing still leads to significant duplication of effort. • SQL Server Table locks in long query - Solution: NoLock?

  a report in my application runs a query that needs between 5 - 15 seconds (constrained to count of rows that will be returned). The query has 8 joins to nearly all main-tables of my application (Customers, sales, units etc). A little tool shows me, that in this time, all those 8 tables are locked with a shared table lock. That means, no update operation will be done in this time. A solution from a friend is, to have every join in the query, which is not mandetory to have 100% correct data (dirty read), with a NoLock, so only 1 of this 8 tables will be locked completly. Is that a good solution? For a report in which 99% of data came from one table, unlock the less prio tables?
