  • Home Sharing and Remote on iTunes causing firewall nags

    It seems that enabling Home Sharing and/or hooking up my iPhone's Remote to iTunes causes Mac OS X Snow Leopard's firewall to freak out and keep nagging every time I launch iTunes to ask if I'd like it to accept incoming connections. If I turn off Home Sharing and forget all Remotes, the nag dialog no longer comes up. I could also disable the firewall, but I think that's a silly thing to do. iTunes is already in the firewall whitelist, so the only thing I know that could cause Mac OS X to nag is a bad application bundle code signature. I checked with this Terminal command: $ codesign -vvv /Applications/iTunes.app/ And sure enough, this is what it outputs: /Applications/iTunes.app/: a sealed resource is missing or invalid /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AutofillSettings.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/iTunesDJSettings.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MobilePhonePrefs.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MobilePhoneSetup.nib/objects.xib: resource added /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/UniversalAccess.nib/objects.xib: resource added I've tried reinstalling iTunes as suggested by this answer, but Mac OS X still nags about incoming connections and the exact same output is generated when I run the above command again. On my PC, Windows Firewall has never nagged whenever I turn on Home Sharing and hook up Remote on my iPhone. Both computers use iTunes 9.2.1. My Mac runs Mac OS X 10.6.4. Is there anything special I need to do that I might have missed? Or how do I resolve the issue? EDIT: I've updated to iTunes 10, but the nags on my Mac are still there and only go away if I turn off Home Sharing and Remote. EDIT 2: I've updated to Remote 2.0 on my iPhone, but the firewall nags are persisting. Has anyone else had this firewall issue at all?

  • button of MDImenu can't disenable in VS2008

    Hi everyone. i had just started to learn VB and VS2008 and im doing some system due to my homework. i made a WELCOME form with a timer, 5s to pass to the next form which called Select. After passed to next form, itll me.visible = false. Theres 3 buttons on the Select form which call Customer, Staff and Exit. As i had just start, the button Customer will pass to a MDI menu call Customer Menu with a menu strip button called Quotation. Same, Select will me.visible = false when done. Then a problem occured, i made a Quotation inside the Customer Menu, such as the mdiparent of Quotation is Customer. I expected that the Quotation button will disenable to press after i pressed that button. But i fail to do that.   • Should we deploy a Webkit browser for our intranet applications?

    At my place of employment, we are increasingly finding it difficult to develop for IE, which was historically the easiest browser to target, from an intranet-app point of view. It was already deployed. It already understood NTLM authentication, thus well integrated with our domain-level security. It had neat, albeit non-standard features such as XMLDOM and XmlHTTP. Now, we are increasingly irritated by issues presented by IE: There are several versions: IE 7, 8, and soon 9 beta, which all have slightly different issues related to performance, functionality (especially re:security and zones), and aesthetics. IE 7 and 8 are slower than Webkit-based browsers. Period. There are technology limitations such as missing canvas element, CSS bugs, etc. that make it hard to use 3rd party packages or even consistently write code across IE versions. Users are increasingly using Firefox or Chrome, even for intranet use. Does anyone have experience with making a transition? Any advice would be welcome.

    I've got a really nasty problem... I wrote a Red5 app and so on and it is running perfectly on my local computer. Now the problem occurs = How can I make this program work on a remote server? Local : Mac OS X 10.5 - Red5 0.63 Server: CentOS 5 - Red5 0.90 Maybe it's because of the version difference. But I can't test Red5 0.90 locally because it won't start up and I can't install the 0.63 version on the server because of missing dependencies (and broken links to them...)

  • Will GTK's pango and cairo work well in Cocoa and MFC applications.

    I'm writing a GUI program and decided to go native on all platforms. But for all the stuff i need to draw myself i would like to use the same drawing routines because font and unicode handling is so difficult and complex. Do you see any negative points in useing Pango/Cairo. Well on MacOSX i havent succeded installing Pango/Cairo yet. Looks like a bad Omen. I would also like to hear about the performance penality. The first time i looked at Pango i thought, yes thats the reason why Software is still getting despite better hardware.

    I'm looking for a primary source (or a really good explanation) to back up the claim that the use of autorelease is dangerous or overly expensive when writing software for the iPhone. Several developers make this claim, and I have even heard that Apple does not recommend it, but I have not been able to turn up any concrete sources to back it up. SO references: autorelease-iphone Why does this create a memory leak (iPhone)? Note: I can see, from a conceptual point of view, that autorelease is slightly more expensive than a simple call to release, but I don't think that small penalty is enough to make Apple recommend against it. What's the real story?

    I am told that Huffman coding is used as loseless data compression algorithm but also am told that real data compress software do not employ huffman coding,cause if the keys are not distributed decentralized enough,the compressed file could be even larger than the orignal file.   • what makes a Tomcat5.5 cannot be "aware" of new Java Web Applications?

    This is for uni homework, but I reckon it is more a generic problem to the Tomcat Server(version 5.5.27) on my uni. The problem is, I first did a skeleton Java Web Application (Just a simple Servlet and a welcome-file, nothing complicated, no lib included) using NetBeans 6.8 with the bundled Tomcat 6.0.20 (localhost:8084/WSD) Then, to test and prove it is "portable" and "auto-deploy-able", I cleaned and built a WSD.war file and dropped it onto my Xampp Tomcat (localhost:8080/WSD). The war extracted everything accordingly and I can see identical output from this Tomcat. So far, so good. However, after I tried to drop to war onto uni server, funny thing happens: uni server Even though I've changed the war permission to 755, it is simply not "responding". I then copied the extracted files to uni server, the MainServlet cannot be recognized from within its Context Path "/WSD", basically nothing works, expect the static index.jsp. I tried several times to stop and restart uni Tomcat, it doesn't help? I wonder what makes this happen? Is there anything I did wrong with my approach? To be frank I paid no attention to a server not under my control, and I am unfortunately not a real active day-to-day Java Programmer now. I understand the fundamentals of MVC, Servelets, JSPs, JavaBeans, but I really feel frustrated by this, as I cannot see why... Or, should I ask, a Java Web Application, after cleaned and built by NetBeans6.8, is self-contained and self-configured so ready to be deployed to any Java Web Container? I know, I can certainly program everything in plain old JSP, but this is soooo... unacceptable to myself... Update : I am now wondering if there is any free Tomcat Hosting so that I would like to see if my war file and/or my web app can go with them without any configuration at all?

  • How to maintain a persistant network-connection between two applications over a network?

    I was recently approached by my management with an interesting problem - where I am pretty sure I am telling my bosses the correct information but I really want to make sure I am telling them the correct stuff. I am being asked to develop some software that has this function: An application at one location is constantly processing real-time data every second and only generates data if the underlying data has changed in any way. On the event that the data has changed send the results to another box over a network Maintains a persistent connection between the both machines, altering the remote box if for some reason the network connection went down From what I understand, I imagine that I need to do some reading on doing some sort of TCP/IP socket-level stuff. That way if the connection is dropped the remote location will be aware that the data it has received may be stale. However management seems to be very convinced that this can be accomplished using SOAP. I was under the impression that SOAP is more or less a way for a client to initiate a procedure from a server and get some results via the HTTP protocol. Am I wrong in assuming this? I haven't been able to find much information on how SOAP might be able to solve a problem like this. I feel like a lot of people around my office are using SOAP as a buzzword and that has generated a bit of confusion over what SOAP actually is - and is capable of. Any thoughts on how to accomplish this task would be appreciated!

  • Is there a way to automate MS Office applications without license?

    I am currently writing an application that will perform automation in Excel. I have MS Office (2007) installed on my work computer and the application is working fine referencing the the Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Lirary. The target machine has the Office installed but not registered. It is one of those preinstalled editions. Attempting to run the application on the target machine I get an error saying Office is not installed? I'm assuming then you have to have a registed Office to use the object libraries? Is there anyway around this as I do not have a Office license key lying around and its quite expensive?

  • C# menustrip designer

    Hi, I'm not sure when this happened but when I was trying to edit a menustrip in my program (in the VS designer), I noticed that the menu items had be grouped or merged. Like: File Edit Format Insert ... Instead of being able to click each menu item and add sub-items to them in the designer, they all were grouped together so I couldn't edit the menu items separately, it's quite painful. I couldn't find any properties related to this, so how could I ungroup the menu items in the designer?

  • Is it reasonable to use OpenGL for desktop applications?

    I've been writing a small desktop gadget-type application that displays scrolling text along the bottom of the screen (Similar to the old CNN news ticker), however the performance of GDI is just unsatisfactory (As high as 8-12% on a quad core and 20% on a single core) even after I've attempted to clean out bottlenecks. I was considering using OpenGL instead to render everything, but I don't know if that is a reasonable option to require users to have hardware acceleration for a tiny app like this. Does anybody have any input on this?

  • How do you handle passwords or credentials for standalone applications?

    Let's say that you have a standalone application (a Java application in my case) and that this application has a configuration file (a XML file in my case) where you store the credentials (user and password) for a bunch of databases you need to connect. Everything works great, but now you discover (or your are given a new requirement like me) that you have to put this application in a different server and that you can't have these credentials in the configuration files because of security and/or compliance considerations. I'm considering to use data sources hosted in the application server (a WAS server), but I think this could have poor performance and maybe it's not the best approach since I'm connecting from a standalone application. I was also considering to use some sort of encryption, but I would like to keep things as simple as possible. How would you handle this case? Where would you put these credentials or protect them from being compromised? Or how would you connect to your databases in this scenario?

  • Fix single entry from mbr

    I use EasyBCD to manage my tripleboot of (1) Windows Server 2008 R2, (2) Windows 7 Professional and (3) Ubuntu Linux. While trying to change the order of my boot menu I ended up losing the Windows Server entry. Luckily I had a boot menu backup (.bcd file) that allowed me to restore my boot menu using EasyBCD. However, when I now select the Windows Server option in my boot menu the Windows Server Recovery Environment starts up. So I have to select language/keyboard layout/etc. and then I have 3 options as shown in the image below. . My goal is to fix the one corrupted Windows Server entry from my boot menu without messing up or losing the two other ones. I'm guessing the Recovery Console (Command Prompt) is the next step and that I will be needing bootrec.exe. But when consulting this page: Use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows (about half way down there's a link that shows the bootrec.exe options) I'm getting uncertain. The page lists 4 options for bootrec.exe : /FixMbr /FixBoot /ScanOs /RebuildBcd What option do I need to fix just the server entry of my boot menu? Thanks in advance, Sander P.S. All three OS's are on the same physical disk (3 different partitions). Disk layout: System reserved (primary partition, 100 MB) Windows 7 (primary parition, 150 GB) Windows Server 2008 (primary partition, 150 GB) Extended partition (linux partitions (/,/swap,/home), 150GB + data partition, 150 GB) P.P.S. I have experience with this framework but never had the pleasure to write a piece of software from scratch. For instance: I stumbled across lots of software written in Air/Flex with nearly infinity global vars :-) Most of the software I saw was not object-oriented How can I pack the asynchronous method calls nicely? I'm familiar with general design patterns by gamma. I'm looking more for advise in designing good quality software with Adobe Air/Flex.
