i have problems in converting an XML document type into a Document object..
this is the piece of code
line 1 : Document doc=null;
line 2 : doc = (Document) parser.parse(sourceFile);
for this line 2 it throws java classcast exception..
without the typecast it shows error as
"Type mismatch: cannot convert from org.w3c.dom.Document to javax.swing.text.Document"
how do i now typecast properly? any suggestions??
java.util.zip sucks for stream compression. The longer you leave an Inflator/Deflator open without calling end(), the more native memory it uses up. This is a known issue: http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=4797189 which nobody seems to care about fixing.
What is a good alternative? Preferably one that is free and is still actively supported by its developers.

Im using Java to create a maze of specified "rows" and "columns" over each other to look like a grid.
I plan to use a depth-first recursive method to "open the doors" between the rooms
(the box created by the rows and columns).
I need help writing a openDoor method that will break the link between rooms.
In Java I'm trying to test for a null value, from a ResultSet, where the column is being cast to a primitive int type.

From the code fragment above, is there a better way to do this, and I assume that the second wasNull() test is redundant?

I have a Windows Server that recives mail. These mail contains only 1 single CSV file. I want my server to automatically take the attachment from any incoming mail and send to a java program locally installed. Is there anyone who can give me directions on any programs that fix this or do I need to create some kind of windows service?

I have a string which is fed into the query as IN clause,which looks like this ('ACT','INACT') which is one of the parameters to a function inside a package.when a call is made to the function from java,

Hi, i have a problem, I developed an application using flex+java+blazeds with tomcat that provide flex enviroment.
I want to deploy my application using tomcat but I can't, how can I deploy my app?
Exception handling aside, I'm using the following to input a line of text in Java:
BufferedReader strin = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
String txt = null;
txt = strin.readLine();
However, I want to be able to edit an existing string, so that if txt were initialized to "hello" instead of null, then the readLine() would have the "hello" text in the buffer for me to edit.
I can't see how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

Today I was browsing through some question on this site and I found mention of enum being used in singleton pattern and that there are some thread safety benefits to such solution.
I never used enums and I have been programing in java for more than couple a years now. And apparently they changed a lot and now they even do full blown support of OOP within them selfs.
Now why and what for should I used enum in day to day programing?
The examples for JNI i've seen map Java native methods to implementation by C++ global functions. Is there a way to set the native methods implementation to be the member functions of a C++ object instead?

This doesn't work, since it prints 1|2|3|4 in every row, which isn't what i need. I found the issue, and it's because the first for loop changes the array order more times than needed and basically it returns as it was at the beginning.
I know that probably there's a way to achieve this by writing more code, but i always tend to nest as much as possible to "optimize" the code while i write it, so that's why i tried solving this exercise by using less variables and loops as possible.

Is there a way to include all the jar files within a directory in the classpath?
I'm trying java -classpath lib/*.jar:. my.package.Program and it is not able to find class files that are certainly in those jars. Do I need to add each jar file to the classpath separately?

on Distributed Programming with MapReduce. I understand that MapReduce is a programming system designed for large-scale data processing problems, but I have a hard time getting my head around the basic examples given and how I might apply them in real world situations.
Can someone give a simple example of MapReduce implemented using either java, javascript or actionscript?
