• Why isn't DBIx::Class::Schema::Loader creating my classes?

  I am trying to generate static schemas using DBIx::Class in Perl. The command shown below outputs a Schema.pm and no other files. Any idea what I'm doing wrong, or how to to debug this? Schema dump completed. I'm using Strawberry Perl on Windows XP. The database is SQL Server 2000, accessed through an ODBC connection. I can successfully run queries using plain old DBI with the same ODBC connection.

I get the following error: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. But when I try to run var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t1 in DB.Table1 where t1.Date >= DataTime.Now select t1.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a OR var a = from c in DB.Customers where (from t2 in DB.Table2 where t2.Date = DataTime.Now select t2.ID).Contains(c.ID) select a It works! I'm sure that there both IN queries contain some customers ids.

• Whats the proper way of accessing a database through an assembly?

  Hi, I have a ASP.NET MVC application which is build up as an assembly that queries the database and a asp.net frontend that references this assembly and this assembly abstracts the underlying database. This means that my Assembly contains a app.config file that contains the connectionstring to the database (Linq to Sql data model). How do I go about making this more flexible? Should i make a "initialize()" method somewhere in my assembly which takes the connection string from the asp.net mvc application and then that controls which database to use? or how is this done?

  I have a table of 2 fields. Word and timestamp. Then i have this array which contains some words. How do i delete all the records in the table which match with the words in the array? Suppose that the model is called "Word". Any ideas on how to achieve this? maybe loop through the array and run some destroy queries. Can anybody direct me here? thanks

  Is there an equivalent to cron for MySQL? I have a PHP script that queries a table based on the month and year, like: SELECT * FROM data_2010_1 What I have been doing until now is, every time the script executes it does a query for the table, and if it exists, does the work, if it doesn't it creates the table. I was wondering if I can just set something up on the MySQL server itself that will create the table (based on a default table) at the stroke of midnight on the first of the month. Update Based on the comments I've gotten, I'm thinking this isn't the best way to achieve my goal. So here's two more questions: If I have a table with thousands of rows added monthly, is this potentially a drag on resources? If so, what is the best way to partition this table, since the above is verboten? What are the potential problems with my home-grown method I originally thought up?

  Hey there, I am planning to develop an iPhone application heavily relying on sqlite DB , from different links I have gone through this seems to be a great tool and has some really good support. As my app is still in the planning process I would like to ask if there are any Issues with SQLlite database ? from memory management to Queries and data sizes and multiple access etc; Please share your experience using SQLite DB in iPhone and what problems did you face? • SQL Server indexed view matching of views with joins not working

  Does anyone have experience of when SQL Servr 2008 R2 is able to automatically match indexed view (also known as materialized views) that contain joins to a query? for example the view select dbo.Orders.Date, dbo.OrderDetails.ProductID from dbo.OrderDetails join dbo.Orders on dbo.OrderDetails.OrderID = dbo.Orders.ID cannot be automatically matched to the same exact query. When I select directly from this view ith (noexpand) I actually get a much faster query plan that does a scan on the clustered index of the indexed view. Can I get SQL Server to do this matching automatically? I have quite a few queries and views... I am on enterprise edition of SQL Server 2008 R2.

• Expand in linq not loading inner data collections from service.

  I am seeing odd behavior with service queries! I am using MVVM pattern for a silverlight 3 app on 3.5 framework and Dataservices 1.5. The following code eager loads correctly the parent object and the child heirarchy perfectly IF and ONLY IF I am preloading the data. But I would like to fetch a different set of the parent object (and its child heirarchy) on different button clicks. What I am seeing is that on button click, only the parent object is retrieved, and the child heirarchy contains nothing. Any suggestions? Any ideas how to tackle this? Thanks all.   Hi there, we've had a ASP.NET web application deployed for a number of years now.... last week we migrated to a slightly slower server to save some money. Now we're frequently getting command timeouts: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding This is understandable in that a slower server will take longer to produce results; take longer time and produce a timeout. Is there any system-wide way to get SqlClient to set a longer timeout? We cannot change the code, as it's everywhere... we're using multiple data access technologies as well. Maybe there's a default command timeout setting on a connection string? We just need to increase it by 30 seconds; we're happy to wait a bit longer for queries to return. thanks

  Here is a for loop written by Javascript. It is trying to apply queries for websql. for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++){ db.transaction(function (tx){ tx.executeSql('INSERT INTO ProjSetsT (ProjID) VALUES (?);', [i]); }); } The attempt is obvious, I tried to add values "0, 1, 2, ... 9" into column ProjID in table ProjSetsT. It does not work. I only got the last element, i.e. "9" inserted, but not the first eight numbers. Is there any syntax mistakes?

Right now, I make two trips to the server: one for getting the records, and the other for counting the total number of records. • WCF - (Custom) binary serialisation.

  I want to be able to query my database over the web, and I am wanting to use a WCF service to handle the requests and results. The problem is that due to the amount of data that can potentially be returned from these queries, I'm worried about how these results will be serialised over the network. For example, I can imagine the XML serialisation looking like: <Results> <Person Name="Adam" DateOfBirth="01/02/1985" /> <Person Name="Bob" DateOfBirth="04/07/1986" /> </Results> And the binary serialisation containing types names and other (unnecessary) metadata. Perhaps even the type name for each element in a collection? o_o Ideally, I'd like to perform the serialisation of certain 'DataContract'-s myself so I can make it super-compact. Does anyone know if this is possible, or of any articles which explain how to do custom serialisation with WCF? Thanks in advance

• Need to map classes to different databases at runtime in Hibernate

  I have MainDB database and unknown number (at compile time) of UserDB_1, ..., UserDB_N databases. MainDB contains names of those UserDB databases in some table (new UserDB can be created at runtime). All UserDB have exactly the same table names and fields. How to handle such situation in Hibernate? (database structure cannot be changed). Currently I am planning to create generic User classes not mapped to anything and just use native SQL for all queries: session.createSQLQuery("select * from " + db + ".user where id=1") .setResultTransformer(Transformers.aliasToBean(User.class)); Is there anything better I can do? Ideally I would want to have mappings for UserDB tables and relations and use HQL on required database.

• Which SQL query is faster? Filter on Join criteria or Where clause?

  Compare these 2 queries. Is it faster to put the filter on the join criteria or in the were clause. I have always felt that it is faster on the join criteria because it reduces the result set at the soonest possible moment, but I don't know for sure. I'm going to build some tests to see, but I also wanted to get opinions on which would is clearer to read as well.   look at this table please table |id| |name| |order| i must get the rows, where name = something and order = somevalue so i write select `id` from `table` where `name` = 'something' and `order` = 'somevalue' but depend on php logic, sometimes i need to get all rows, where name = somethimg, independently of order value. i don't want to change the query structure, because in practise there are many number of fields, and possible count of queries will became very big. so i want to save the structure of query, and when i need to select just by name, i want to write something like this select `id` from `table` where `name` = 'something' and `order` = any value is it possible? maybe the question is incomprehensible, at least i tried;) sorry for bad english thanks

• How to efficiently handle Where and OrderBy clauses

  My business layer passes all the required information to UI layer. From what I have read, in general, best practice is to send fetched data to UI layer, and to avoid passing queries like ObjectQuery. My problem with this approach is next: If I am to make a flexible business layer, then I should allow UI to sort the data anyway it requires. Fetching sorted data from database, and then resorting them in UI is kind of bad practice for me, so the only way is to somehow So what are my options? Is there a way to make it like this: public void OrderByMethod(params ...) { .... } so I can call it like this: OrderByMethod(MyEntity.Property1, MyEntity.Property2 descending....); Thanks, Goran

• Doing a join across two databases with different collations on SQL Server and getting an error.

  I know, I know with what I wrote in the question I shouldn't be surprised. But my situation is slowly working on an inherited POS system and my predecessor apparently wasn't aware of JOINs so when I looked into one of the internal pages that loads for 60 seconds I see that it's a fairly quick, rewrite these 8 queries as one query with JOINs situation. Problem is that besides not knowing about JOINs he also seems to have had a fetish for multiple databases and surprise, surprise they use different collations. Fact of the matter is we use all "normal" latin characters that English speaking people would consider the entire alphabet and this whole thing will be out of use in a few months so a bandaid is all I need. Long story short is I need some kind of method to cast to a single collation so I can compare two fields from two databases. Exact error is: Cannot resolve the collation conflict between "SQL_Latin1_General_CP850_CI_AI" and "SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS" in the equal to operation.

• DDE Server Windows:orcascr9.exe: Application Error

  Hello I've looked at the queries on SO that pertain to similar errors - but haven't found anything so far, to help with this particular problem I am having with an orcascript which I am running under Powerbuilder9.0. The orca script connects to an SCC service provider, does a full target refresh, and then is supposed to build the exe. It never gets to the last step though. The log is not very informative and simply says this at the point of failure: PBORCA_SccRefreshTarget. Full Rebuild Calling cm_rebuild_application(CM_REBUILD_FULL) While the script is at some way into this above step, it exits and throws up the DDE server error. Can someone help me figure this one out? I just barely know the basics of PB, and the intent of this exercise is to convert an IDE-based build that I inherited, into an orcascript build so that i can run the build unmonitored.   Hello, I am not a SQL Expert. I’m trying to elegantly solve a query problem that others have had to have had. Surprisingly, Google is not returning anything that is helping. Basically, my application has a “search” box. This search field will allow a user to search for customers in the system. I have a table called “Customer” in my SQL Server 2008 database. This table is defined as follows: Customer UserName (nvarchar) FirstName (nvarchar) LastName (nvarchar) As you can imagine, my users will enter queries of varying cases and probably mis-spell the customer’s names regularly. How do I query my customer table and return the 25 results that are closest to their query? I have no idea how to do this ranking and consider the three fields listed in my table. Thank you!

• Why would a TableAdapter populate a DataSet with "1/1/2000" for an entire timestamp column?

  I have a TableAdapter filling a DataSet, and for some reason every select query populates my timestamp column with the value 1/1/2000 for every selected row. I first verified that original values are intact on the DB side; for the most part, they are, although it seems a few rows lost their original timestamp because of update queries performed programmatically before the issue was discovered. The DataColumn type is DateType, while the database (Postgres) column type is timestamp. Up until recently, this was all playing very nicely. I noticed the issue in a bound DataGridView control, and verified that this is not related to data binding by utilizing the 'Preview Data' option in the VS DataSet Editor. Usually when I notice unexpected values popping up in my application it's related to a mis-configured property, type conflict, or another silly mistake I've made. So after checking properties and types, and even recreating the TableAdapter from scratch, to say I'm a little baffled is an understatement. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to fix the issue and/or diagnose the cause?

• How to Sum calulated fields

  I‘d like to ask I question that here that I think would be easy to some people. Ok I have query that return records of two related tables. (One to many) In this query I have about 3 to 4 calculated fields that are based on the fields from the 2 tables. Now I want to have a group by clause for names and sum clause to sum the calculated fields but it ends up in error message saying: “You tried to execute a query that is not part of aggregate function” So I decided to just run the query without the totals *(ie no group by , sum etc,,,) : And then I created another query that totals my previous query. ( i.e. using group by clause for names and sum for calculated fields… no calculation here) This is fine ( I use to do this) but I don’t like having two queries just to get summary total. Is their any other way of doing this in the design view and create only one query?. I would very much appreciate. Thankyou: JM

  I have a strange one.. I am doing something like : tip = find (:first, :conditions => ["last_shown = ? or last_shown is null", Date.today]) And then a little later on I do : tip.last_shown = Date.today tip.save When I look at output of these queries, ActiveRecord is doing the first query with todays date as I would expect. However, the send query, ActiveRecord is setting the last_shown date to be yesterdays date. Why on earth would it do this? I have config.time_zone = 'UTC' in my environment.rb. I can use Time.now.utc.to_date instead of Date.today but it makes no difference.

  Jeff mentioned in one of the podcasts that one of the things he always does is put in instrumentation for database calls, so that he can tell what queries are causing slowness etc. This is something I've measured in the past using SQL Profiler, but I'm interested in what strategies other people have used to include this as part of the application. Is it simply a case of including a timer across each database call and logging the result, or is there a 'neater' way of doing it? Maybe there's a framework that does this for you already, or is there a flag I could enable in e.g. Linq-to-SQL that would provide similar functionality. I mainly use c# but would also be interested in seeing methods from different languages, and I'd be more interested in a 'code' way of doing this over a db platform method like SQL Profiler.

• How important is caching for a site's speed with PHP?

  I've just made a user-content orientated website http://www.humanisms.co.uk Its done in PHP, MySQL and jQuery's AJAX, at the moment there is only a dozen or so submissions and already i can feel it lagging slightly when it goes to a new page (therefore running a new mysql query) Is it most important for me to try and optimise my mysql queries (by prepared statements) or is it worth in looking at CDN's (amazon s3) and caching (much like the WordPress plugin WP Super Cache) which works by serving static HTML files when there hasnt been new content submitted. Which route is the most beneficial, for me as a developer, to take, ie. where am i better off concentrating my efforts to speed up the site?
