• How to get the CentOS 5.6 alsa drivers which will really work with one shot, without any internet.

  I have one chance to install this in my server on site. Server that i am running is CentOS 5.6 (Dell R310, RAID1) where i need to install alsa-sound driver so that anything related to audio recording from rtsp is working (rail station/rail passing video recording including audio, where audio is not working). Unfortunately i do not have any kind of internet in that odd none human location so yum will not work for me. I need a offline way to install alsa drivers including missing dependencies if arise. What and where i can download this to my usb or cd? so that i can successfully install it (like mission complete). Thanks

• How do I fix font corruption in Google Chrome 9.0.597.44beta in Windows XP?

  I am not sure what is causing this problem, but I think it is related to unicode problems. Google Chrome, seemingly out of nowhere a month ago, stopped rendering unicode characters in certain fonts. IE this ?_? Looks fine in some fonts, but looks like this in others. Renders fine in other browsers. Most recently, I visited the FourSquare website and have complete font corruption. Here is IE vs Chrome Full Size What gives? Has anyone else seen this? How can I fix it?

This application has a large footprint for what it does (well most of the time does nothing). I am tempted to just take it off the start up but wanted to double check... p.s: I am sure its the original application and not a virus or trojan faking to be it...

  I am looking for a product configurator for products with high complexity. The main goal is to allow a sales person to configure the product in a correct and working manner. The product is a combination of hard- and software options. The options for sure have dependecies (so option A needs B and C) and can also exclude each other. The performance requirements of the software related to the hardware need to be considered. So some rules need to be defineable. Does anybody know a tool (preferred open source) doing that job? • Recommended laptops for system admins?

  Hey all - I'm in the market for a new laptop and wanted to get some recommendations. I'm a Linux sysadmin and this laptop is primarily for work related use, working from home, after hours, occasional trips to the data center, etc. We all know the drill. My typical setup includes various utilities and tools plus multiple partitions for booting different OS's including VMware. Need serial port of course, DVD-RW, and all the usual stuff we use in our daily routine. I'm kinda thinking a Thinkpad T510 but open to other suggestions! Brief explanation of why you suggest some particular brand and configuration is appreciated.

• How to make the Eclipse text editor background transparent?

  Is there a way to make the background of Eclipse IDE text editor transparent? I would like to adjust the alpha transparency of the background, but have the text still be opaque. Perhaps there is a plugin that accomplishes this? I haven't seen any options under preferences. And my search on Google has ended in vain thus far, although I did find some nice color themes. Example (Textmate): Note that the text is still solid. This is important, since making the whole window transparent could cause text to bleed into the desktop wallpaper (or whatever is under Eclipse). On another side note, I'm using the latest version of Eclipse (Helios), on both Windows 7 and Fedora 14. • Origin of display connector numbers in XServer (e.g. HDMI1, HDMI2, DP1)

  a custom mainboard has a DVI and a DisplayPort connector on the board. Currently, everything that is connected at DVI will be named "HDMI2" in XServer. I can see that by calling the "xrandr" tool (in Ubuntu Trusty Tahr). A display connected to the DP connector will be named "DP1" or "HDMI1", if I use a DP-to-DVI adapter. We are now testing a slightly upgraded board version, which has a newer CPU (Intel J1800, Baytrail) among other things and the position of the DVI and DP connectors are switched. Also, everything at the DVI port is called "HDMI1" and something connected to the DP port gets "DP2" or "HDMI2". Q: What causes these numbers to be produced in this manner and where (probably in the kernel) is it happening? I suspect the cause to be hardware related. Specifically, at which CPU pins the connector pins are routed and attached to. Q: Would it be possible to influence this numbering scheme in order to retain the previous numbering behaviour?

• Clean Install Windows on a Acer Aspire Laptop with a Hybrid Drive

  I'd like to do a clean install of Windows 8 on my Acer Aspire laptop (Aspire M5-481PT) with a hybrid drive. Physically, there seem to be two hard drives (an HDD and an SSD). So when I try to clean install Windows, I am asked to pick a drive. The HDD has five partitions (some seem to be recovery related), and the SSD has two partitions. Which partitions should I delete (if any), and onto which drive should I install Windows 8? And then how can I instruct Windows 8 to use the HDD-SSD combination as a hybrid drive? Edit: Currently, the operating system seems to be installed (from the factory) on the HDD. The SSD is invisible in File Explorer. It is only visible in disk utilities. I'm betting I need to install Windows to the HDD, and then point Windows to use the SSD for the hybrid relationship. Also, the SSD is about 20 GB. The HDD is about 450 GB.

• Speedup of fixing an openssl bug with 8192 bit key [on hold]

  This is related to this Bug-Report https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=747453 OpenSSL contains a set of arbitrary limitations on the size of accepted key parameters that make unrelated software fail to establish secure connections. The problem was found while debugging a XMPP s2s connection issue where two servers with long certificate keys (8192 Bit RSA) failed to establish a secure connection because OpenSSL rejected the handshake. This seems to be a small problem to be fixed but although there is an easy patch available to fix the issue in that bug report, no reactions are noticed so far.. The last patch that broke the 2048 barrier took 2 years to be implemented and only resulted in an increase to 4096bit, which seems to be a bad joke. Where would we have to report this to speed up the implementation for such an issue?

• Why would an ext3 filsystem be rolled back on a Debian VM running in VirtualBox after loss of power to the host

  A Debian Virtual machine runs as a Guest VirtualBox VM. It's filesystem is EXT3. The host system loses power and after booting up the host system and guest VM, I find that the VM's filesystem has been rolled back to a previous state, losing changes made to the filesystem some time before losing power. The operations that were rolled back had been fully completed before the loss of power (files fully copied, file handles closed, etc.), but it's possible and even likely that other write operations were occuring on the VM at the point of the crash. So I am trying to figure out if it's the filesystem recovery process that rolls back filesystem operations after encountering corruption post power loss, or is it possibly related to VirtualBox and the way it ignores flush requests for performance gains by default (discussed here) Are there any other factors that would result in the filesystem being rolled back after losing power?

• Can anyone recommend how to fix sore "sides" from overuse of computers? (some kind of RSI)

  I have to use computers for 9+ hours per day (no suggestions about 'use your computer less!' please). I get various kinds of RSI: a little soreness in the hands and wrists, but that's not a big deal compared my main problem: Pain in the sides of my body, under my arms and down the sides of my torso. Driving worsens it. Exercise doesn't seem to help (maybe I need a special exercise). It could be posture related, but I haven't found a way to fix that. Has anyone else experienced this? I find lots of people complaining about more typical kinds of RSI, but not like mine. I am hoping someone with experience can recommend an exercise, treatment, or adjustment in how I use my computer.

• Mac terminal: Resource temporarily unavailable

  I'm getting an error message in the Mac Terminal when I try to run several different processes. I did some googling and looking on this site, and found out that it might be related to having too many processes running at one time. However, I'm getting these error messages when I only have a few windows open (much fewer than I was accustomed to having). Looking in activity Monitor, my %User number is at around 25%, and the %System number is around 15%. In the past, I have had both much much higher (until the people at the Apple store told me to keep an eye on it). • SBS2008 : can't have a mailbox accessible from outside?

  We have a SBS2008 server with 9 users using the embeeded Exchange. The MX record points to this server. This works fine. We want 2 remote users to also have a mailbox on this server. The consultant say we can't because SBS don't allow to have remote users for Exchange. He may be right but seems very strange to me. I don't find anything related to that. I don't want to touch this server for political reasons. So I can't to the test. Can anyone confirm if Exchange on SBS2008 can or can't be reach from outside ?

• How long is the Windows 8 activation period if I do not connect to the internet?

  This is not a duplicate of this question, since the OP had already connected to the internet. I installed Windows 8 Consumer Retail and was not connected to the internet, and remain unconnected so it cannot automatically activate. How long can I use Windows 8 this way (never connected to the internet) and without activating the license? I want documentation links, not just an answer you think is true or read somewhere, back up any statements with clear documentation please. Answers related to Vista-W7 activation or commands used in Vista-W7 to check license status are not acceptable as Microsoft completely changed activation technologies for windows 8.

• What security changes are necessary when connecting DSL modem directly to PC instead of router?

  Windows XP I have a user with a single PC that was connected to the internet via a standard home router. The router is now having hardware-related issues and to save money, they're considering connecting the PC directly to the DSL modem since they don't need to share the internet connection or need wireless functionality. If they decide to do that, I'm concerned that this will introduce additional security concerns. Is the Windows Firewall sufficient and Microsoft Security Essentials sufficient for protecting a computer directly connected to a DSL Modem? Or is other security software needed here? Ideally, I'd like to avoid having third-party firewall software constantly bringing up alerts and asking them to approve everything. Also, just to clarify, their use cases are just internet browsing and email.

• Copy/Paste including Hidden Columns when Filtering Rows in Excel 2010

  I suspect the solution will be related to this question?? I have a spreadsheet that comes to me pre-formatted with hidden columns sprinkled in multiple places (for viewing brevity's sake). I need to turn on filtering, apply a filter to one of the columns, and then paste the resulting rows to a new sheet - including the hidden columns (lather, rinse, repeat). I'd prefer to not undo/re-do the hidden columns unless I have to. Is it possible to paste the hidden columns without adding the extra steps?

• Missing Driver - Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

  I have a HP 2000-2106TU Notebook PC running Windows XP. I want to get the brightness keys to work. They are placed over the F2 and F3 buttons and are meant to be used in conjunction with the Fn key. But these combinations do not work, though other Fn keys such as the volume control keys do. I see a missing driver for a device called Video Controller (VGA Compatible) in the Windows Device Manager. The hardware id is PCI VEN 8086 DEV 0106 SUBSYS_1858103C which a Google search suggests is in an Intel HD Graphics family, but I don't know where to locate the driver. HP's driver scan does not help, as it does not show any missing driver related to video/graphics. What can I do next?

• can power supply affect I/O

  I have a dev server machine running Ubuntu 12.04. For a long while it's been throwing intermittent errors where it would suddenly tell me "File system is read only" or drop into a GRUB error console on boot. I've done disk checks, bad blocks, etc. and no real problems with the main SATA drive were detected. Finally the drive would not be detected at all-- but neither would other drives I plugged in (via SATA). I plugged the supposedly "bad" drive into another server and it worked fine, no issues, for days-- so I assumed the motherboard had a bad SATA controller, and replaced the motherboard with an identical model. I replaced the drive into the original machine with the new motherboard, rebooted-- and the same issues-- I/O errors, failure to read the drive at all, dropping into GRUB, etc. I'm wondering if there could be some other issue with this machine, that's not related to the drive-- possibly power supply? • How to remove permanent map of a network drive on OS X Lion?

  Some time ago I mapped a network drive on my Snow Leopard Mac, which was upgraded to Lion. The network drive is not active any more and I receive popups all the time with the error: There was a problem connecting to the server XXXX. I have no idea how I configured at the time. I may have included a mount command, in a config file but I don't know any more where I did it. I reviewed the Preferences/Account/Login items and there is no permanent mapping there. OSX is updated as Nov 27,2011 and the issue is not related to the upgrade to Lion itself but to a misconfiguration. Any help will be greatly appreciated. • Where are iSCSI and volume information location on ESX 4.0?

  Let me start by saying I am somewhat of a Vmware novice, I know just enought to manage and create servers at a basic level from the vSphere client. I have a VMWare server, ESX 4.0 connected over iSCSI to a SAN. The SAN is being used as storage for both RDMs and VMFS volumes. The SAN has died and I ordered a new one. Where can I see the settings related to the iSCSI and volume configuration so that I can try and replicate them on the new SAN when it arrives?

  Users are authenticated by mod_auth_kerb which works great. Therefore I need to set Require valid-user If there is no valid user Apache fails with an 401 Authorization Required. I would like Apache to deliver the website anyway but not providing a remote_user to the underlying script. This is related to How to tell mod_auth_kerb to do its job despite no "require valid-user". But with the important difference that on a whole subdirectory on every url a kerberos negotation should be initiated, and if it fails it should deliver the content anyway.

• Chrooted user does not start in his home directory and does not load his bash_profiles

  If the users logs in, he starts in / of the chroot (Which is /var/jail on the real machine). I would like him to start in his home-dir. Also, he seems not to load any of his profile-files (.bash.rc etc). I followed this tutorial to create the chroot environment. This is what my /etc/passwd looks like: test:x:1004:1008:,,,:/var/jail/home/test:/bin/bash this is what my /var/jail/etc/passwd file looks like: test:x:1004:1008:,,,:/home/test:/bin/bash I also found out that, if I remove Match User test ChrootDirectory /var/jail AllowTCPForwarding no X11Forwarding no from my /etc/ssh/sshd_config, the user starts in his correct home-folder and with his bash-settings loaded. However, he is able to leave the chroot-environment if I remove that part. This question I asked before is somewhat related, since I think the wrong look of the commandline is caused from the not loaded profile-files. So any ideas how to fix this?

• Debian virtual server hangs on reboot, need help debugging

  I'm admin of a Debian 6 virtual server. I've been trying to diagnose this problem for a while but haven't gotten anything. The server hangs every time I want to reboot it. All services seem to be shutting down, I lose ssh connection. Then nothing. I have to restart it through the hoster's web-interface, which just gives me the options "Normal Boot" and "Rescue System". Normal boot then brings the server back to life. Possibly (probably?) related, the server does not boot into a newer kernel version, it's running 2.6.18 right now, but installed is actually 2.6.32. I don't know whether it hangs on shutdown or on startup, but booting through the web-interface works (except the kernel part). Am I missing something obvious? Where should I start looking? I have no idea how to diagnose the problem.

• Restore open applications, documents, and window state

  When working on a project, I generally have a couple of Explorer windows open to relevant folders and a couple of applications (e.g. Eclipse and a form development tool) open to specific project-related documents. There's a lot of value in that context, and I'd like to find a way to save a set of open apps under a project name, then restore that state at a later date. Thus far all of the utilities I've found are virtual desktop products that don't save/restore state. I'm specifically looking for something that will run the applications I had running, open the documents I had open, and position the windows as they were. I'm amazed that such a seemingly simple concept as "Save my workspace state" doesn't seem to be available. I'm on Windows 7. Any suggestions?
