My development team has access to Apple's development program, and is largely coming from a similar background: they're Comp Sci graduates that have experience with Ruby and web languages, but haven't written any C since university. • Why would I want to use server-side JavaScript?

  I'm confused, I regularly read talk of server-side JS, why would I want to use that? It seems like it would execute way slower than pretty much any other language, it also lacks many conventions that more sophisticated languages have. Is it possible to hand entire objects from the client to the server, manipulate them and return them back? Just struggling to understand the concepts of it.

• What programming language is the most English-like?

  I'm mainly a Python programmer, and it is often described as being "executable pseudo-code". I have used a little bit of AppleScript, which seems to be the most English-like programming language I have ever seen, because almost operators can be words, and it lets you use "the" anywhere (for example, this stupid example I just came up with: firstnumber = 1 secondnumber = 2 if the firstnumber is equal to the secondnumber then set the sum to 5 end if is a valid AppleScript program. Are there any programming languages that are even more English-like than these?

• PL/SQL Logical Operators evaluate whole function

  I know in C like languages logical operators are evaluated one at a time so: false && really_expensive_function() is doesn't result in the function being called (I can't remember the CS name for this). Does the same happen in PL/SQL or do I need to break the IF parts out to separate blocks?

• Eclipse: Is it possible to have CDT and Java IDE together

  Hi I have an Eclipse CDT enviroment up and running and customised just the way I like it. I'm also going to be heavily dealing with java soon and I don't want to install a seperate version of Eclipse just to get the java features as I'll be switching between C-C++-ADA-Java quite often so I'd wont the one IDE to support all languages. At the moment I've got C/C++ and Ada working together (CDT + GNAT workbench). How can I get the Eclipse Java IDE with out installing eclipse from scratch again. Thanks

• Do you keep a code bank?

  I've done consulting work for years and I've got code snippets in various languages lying around that I'll re-use for various projects. The collection is getting pretty large and I want to set up a code bank for myself. What code banks do people use? Do you find it helps, or is there some better way of organising my reusable code snippets? (If one does exist, I'd prefer it be open-source, accessible via a web browser, language-agnostic, and maybe colour the code the way Stackoverflow does :)

Most languages I know use static scoping (or have moved to static scoping, like Python), and probably because I know it better I tend to prefer it.   According to their documentation, you should use Array hydration rather than record hydration when retrieving data for read-only purposes. However, this means I have to access the attributes of the retrieved object using arrays and string keys: $user['Phonenumbers'][0]['number'] instead of the OO style: $user->PhoneNumbers[0]->number Now I'm kinda new to PHP, but in other languages I've worked with the 2nd notation would be preferable because typos would be caught at compile time while typos in string literals would not be noticed until runtime. Does this apply to PHP/Doctrine?
