    Hi im a little confused by this diagram http://www.b-eye-network.com/images/content/i030ht0104.gif (Last diagram in the article) 1 - In the "ACCOUNTING ENTRY" table it shows "DebitEntry" and "CreditEntry" i) is this two column or ii) is this two rows of data? or iii) is it two separate tables on its own, Acounting_entry_credit and Accounting_entry_debit?   • Complex Entity Framework linked-graphs issue: how to limit change set / break the graph?

    I have an EDMX containing Sentences, and Words, say and a Sentence contains three Words, say. Appropriate FK relationships exist between the tables. I create some words: Word word1 = new Word(); Word word2 = ... I build a Sentence: Sentence x = new Sentence (word1, word2, word3); I build another Sentence: Sentence y = new Sentence (word1, word4, word5); I try to save x to the database, but EF builds a change set that includes everything, including y, word4 and word5 that aren't ready to save to the database. When SaveChanges() happens it throws an exception: Unable to determine the principal end of the ... relationship. Multiple added entities may have the same primary key. I think it does this because Word has an EntityCollection<Sentence> on it from the FK relationship between the two tables, and thus Sentence y is inextricably linked to Sentence x through word1. So I remove the Navigation Property Sentences from Word and try again. It still tries to put the entire graph into the change set. What suggestions do the Entity Framework experts have for ways to break this connection. Essentially what I want is a one-way mapping from Sentence to Word; I don't want an EntityCollection<Sentence> on Word and I don't want the object graph to get intertwined like this. Code sample: This puts two sentences into the database because Verb1 links them and EF explores the entire graph of existing objects and added objects when you do Add/SaveChanges.   • Workflow for statistical analysis and report writing

    Does anyone have any wisdom on workflows for data analysis related to custom report writing? The use-case is basically this: Client commissions a report that uses data analysis, e.g. a population estimate and related maps for a water district. The analyst downloads some data, munges the data and saves the result (e.g. adding a column for population per unit, or subsetting the data based on district boundaries). The analyst analyzes the data created in (2), gets close to her goal, but sees that needs more data and so goes back to (1). Rinse repeat until the tables and graphics meet QA/QC and satisfy the client. Write report incorporating tables and graphics. Next year, the happy client comes back and wants an update. This should be as simple as updating the upstream data by a new download (e.g. get the building permits from the last year), and pressing a "RECALCULATE" button, unless specifications change. At the moment, I just start a directory and ad-hoc it the best I can. I would like a more systematic approach, so I am hoping someone has figured this out... I use a mix of spreadsheets, SQL, ARCGIS, R, and Unix tools. Thanks! PS: Below is a basic Makefile that checks for dependencies on various intermediate datasets (w/ ".RData" suffix) and scripts (".R" suffix). Make uses timestamps to check dependencies, so if you 'touch ss07por.csv', it will see that this file is newer than all the files / targets that depend on it, and execute the given scripts in order to update them accordingly. This is still a work in progress, including a step for putting into SQL database, and a step for a templating language like sweave. Note that Make relies on tabs in its syntax, so read the manual before cutting and pasting. I have this variable named age which I want to pass to server.php file where I can construct the XML or JSON. On server I see some variables like $examp = $_REQUEST["q"]; but I dont know where to put $age to be accesed in server.php Thanks

I have tried many ways but normally it inserts more records and doesn´t update the record. I use a .MDB database.

    I have a schema that includes tables like the following (pseudo schema): TABLE ItemCollection { ItemCollectionId ...etc... } TABLE Item { ItemId, ItemCollectionId, ContributorId } I need to aggregate the number of distinct contributors per ItemCollectionId. This is possible with a query like: SELECT ItemCollectionId, COUNT(DISTINCT ContributorId) FROM Item GROUP BY ItemCollectionId I further want to pre-calculate this aggregation using an indexed (materialized) view. The DISTINCT prevents an index being placed on this view. Is there any way to reformulate this which will not violate SQL Server's indexed view constraints?

    I need to create a Microsoft Access database, but have a need, in one of my tables, for a single field to be strongly encrypted. Since AES requires both a key and an initialization vector, I've decided to solve this problem by requiring a password to access the database (as the key), and a field in the table to hold a SHA1 hash of the plaintext of the encrypted field. Does anyone know where I can find VBA-compatible code to actually do the encryption?

    So, I have some code which looks like this: byte* ar; foo(ar) // Allocates a new[] byte array for ar ... delete[] ar; To make this safer, I used a scoped_array: byte* arRaw; scoped_array ar; foo(arRaw); ar.reset(arRaw); ... // No delete[] The question is, Is there any existing way to do this using just the scoped_array, without using a temporary raw array? I can probably write an in-place "resetter" class, just wondering if the functionality exists and I'm missing it. Thanks, Dan

    I have two tables that I'm trying to create a relationship between so I can write nice LINQ queries that don't require join. Widgets WidgetId WidgetDescription Orders OrderId WidgetId OrderDate What I want to be able to do is create a LINQ query that does something similar to: var result = from x in db.Widgets Where x.Orders.OrderDate == "5/11/2010" select x; I can't seem to get intellitext to pick up the other database despite creating a relationship in SQL server. Are there any additional steps I need to take to make this work?

    So I have a database that is setup sort of like this (simplified, and in terms of the tables, all are InnoDBs): Users: contains based user authentication information (uid, username, encrypted password, et cetera) Contacts: contains two rows per relationship that exists between users as (uid1, uid2), (uid2, uid1) to allow for a good 1:1 relationship (must be mutual) between users Messages: has messages that consist of a blob, owner-id, message-id (auto_increment) So my question is, what's the best MySQL query to get all messages that belong to all the contacts of a specific user? Is there an efficient way to do this?

    Hi, I need a way to store a value somewhere for temporarily by say Process A. Process A can exit the after storing the value in memory. After sometime Process B comes accesses the same location of memory and read the value. I need to store in memory, because I dont want the data to persistent across reboots. But as long as the system is up, it Independent of the Process the data must be accessible. I tried MailSlots and Temporary files in windows, both seem to have problem where the process reference count drops to zero , the entities dont persist in memory. What is a suitable mechanism for this in Windows preferably using Win32 API? Ganesh

I wrote this one: SELECT CONCAT_WS(' / ', table_n1.t1_name, table_n2.t2_name) AS names FROM table_n1 LEFT JOIN table_n2 ON table_n2.t1_id = table_n1.t1_id that works for an half: this only return the 2° row (in the example above): | names | | foo - bar | This query return the 'father' (table_n1) name only when it doesnt have 'childs' (table_n2). How can i fix it?

What other circular dependencies exist / are allowed between objects? I tried to create cycles between Views but Oracle successfully rejected that.
