• How to make computer interface with circuit

  I understand that I can build a circuit that will do whatever I like (ex: a simple circuit that will turn on a motor to open the blinds or something), and I can write a program that will automate my computer/mac however I like (ex: open this program at this time, or with this input and create a new file, ect). My question is, how can I interface the two? Is there an easy DIY or cheap commercial (or not cheap but functional) USB plug that will turn on/off from computer commands? I'm basically looking for some sort of on/off switch I can script/applescript. How would you even approach this problem, would I have to write my own driver some where along the way?

• Make bootable iso with grub chainloading

  My parents' pc has windows 7's boot manager installed at MBR and grub2 is installed on /dev/sda2 (booting linux on /dev/sda2). I want to make a bootable cd so that when booted from it just chainloads into the boot manager on the second partition. I assume using grub rather than grub2 for this will be simpler, using the configuration timeout=0 hiddenmenu default=0 title grub2 (/dev/sda2) rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader (hd0,1)+1 I know I can make a bootable linux cd in various ways, but that is not what I want. I just want to put grub/grub2 on the cd, no kernels or programs. The question is how do I make the iso file? I have found some references to installing on a floppy or usb disk, but all those assume the device is present when running the grub install commands. A iso file is different.

• Force copy files off CRC error filled hard drive

  So I got a dying Western Digital hard drive here and I have a new Western Digital hard drive to transfer all the data to. I have the new HDD hooked up by a SATA to USB. I want to transfer all the pictures, etc to the new HDD. I am unable to because of the CRC error. I have ran chkdsk /f /r and it didnt work because the drive is just simply dying. What tool will let me bypass CRC and continue on with the copying? OS: Vista Home Prem. 32bit

• How to swap the "fn" use of Function keys on al Apple Keyboard in Linux

  I have an apple slim keyboard (USB) and if I want to use one of the Function Key as-is, I also have to press "fn " key first. Otherwise, it will try to perform the other function of the key, such as increasing or decreasing the display intensity, change the volume/mute, etc.... As well, the fn key is actually in the position of the "insert" key for regular keyboards. How can I fix all of that ? I really like this keyboard, as it make my typing much easier, and much more silent too. But some of those mappings that are different sometime bug me. Thanks :-)

• Getting Android drivers to work on Windows 8 Community Preview

  I made a post about this on android.stackexchange.com, and they referred me to here. I have an HTC Flyer and a Motorola Droid X, and for both, I've been unable to connect to USB debugging to do Android development. With the Motorola Droid X, the MotoHelper installer won't run, saying that I'm running an Unknown OS Version. With the HTC Flyer, HTC's Sync software installs successfully, but again the device doesn't connect. I realize that this is beta software, but is there anything that I can do to get this working? I've been relying on switching back to my laptop running Linux to test out my Android builds on the device. Of course, I'm not in any production environment - just playing around with the new OS, but not being able to write code on it makes less fun.

• Imaging Dell OEM Windows 7 install onto other Dell laptops purchased

  We have ordered 70 dell laptops directly from dell. We are wondering if we can take the existing OEM install of windows on one of the laptops, add some files and then deploy that image to the rest of the laptops. We are trying to avoid making an image from the ground up. I would imagine since we have purchased 70 laptops that the same install would work on all 70 - I am not sure though. I have imaged three laptops with this image and attached them all onto the domain with no problems. They are also all activated. Updates ran fine as well.   How can I permanently add virtual wireless interfaces to my network configuration with iw? I created the following interfaces: iw phy phy0 interface add vwlan0 type station iw phy phy0 interface add vwlan1 type __ap The first is configured as a wifi client connecting to an existing network (wpa_supplicant) The second is configured as wireless hotspot (hostapd + dnsmasq) The setup works, but now I can't quite figure out what the best strategy is to save this configuration permanently. Have made an init script for wpa_supplicant Have made an init script for the hotspot Virtual adaptor network settings set in /etc/network/interfaces But all this depends on the wireless interfaces being created. What would be the best way to make sure these interfaces are created before the network is set up and the services are run? As a bonus, since this wireless interface is a usb device, would it be possible to have the interfaces created (and the services started) when the interface is hotplugged? I know you can execute code after a network interface is up, but the wlan0 interface that is hotplugged should never be up. Operating system is raspbian

  I will upgrade my system from Windows Vista Home Premium (x64) to Windows 7 (x64). Before starting the upgrade process, I want to back up my current system with Norton Ghost. I have never used it before, so I need assistance to do that. At the moment, there is 139 GB used space by Vista and I have 1 TB external HD connected via USB. • change ubuntu brightness using external keyboard

  I have a hp pavilion g6 laptop. My keyboard has stopped working so I cannot use laptop keyboard to change the brightness. The issue is my brightness is set at 0 so I cannot see anything once ubuntu loads. I have attached an external keyboard via usb, I was wondering how can I change the brightness using the external keyboard. Is there a way. I cannot login or see anything once ubuntu is loaded its total dark on the login screen. Any help is appreciated.

  I've got speakers (audio in) and headphones (USB headset with it's own soundcard) connected to my desktop computer. Under Windows 7, I can right-click the Audio Mixer and select Playback Devices and toggle between my these devices. Is there an easier way, perhaps a keyboard shortcut, that would make it easier to toggle? I'm working in an shared space were sometimes I want headphones to avoid annoying other people, but at other times speakers are OK. I want to be able to toggle quickly. In an ideal world, the solution to my question would work in Vista too.

• Windows Media Center says "Searching for tuners" when I try to play live TV

  After upgrading from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to the 8.1 preview, I need some help in being able to watch live TV again. When I try to now, it says Please Wait. Searching for tuners. I tried reinstalling the software for the Hauppauge WinTV DCR-2650 TV tuner, and upgrading the firmware for both the tuner and the Cisco STA-1520 tuning adapter. I also tried swapping around the USB ports, cold-booting the devices, and running the Set Up TV Signal setting in WMC, but that says The TV signal cannot be configured because a TV tuner was not detected. Both devices look fine in Device Manager, reporting the "This device is working properly" status. I'm not sure if this is related, but I did have some network connectivity issues immediately after upgrading to Windows 8.1 where my either my subnet mask or default gateway was missing, and since the TV tuner shows up as a network device, I wonder if that might be related. However, I really don't know how those settings should look and Hyper-V sort of further complicates things with the virtual Ethernet adapters:

• Serial port game controller (racing pedals)

  I have an old madCatz racing wheel for the playstation 2. The gas and brake pedals are connected to the wheel by a serial port. I just bought a usb racing wheel for the PC but it lacks pedals so I wanted to see if I could get these old madCatz working. I just installed the serial port in my motherboard, but now I have a problem with software. Nothing will recognize the pedal. I was wondering if there are any programs or drivers out there that will allow me to set the pedals up to work. Any advice would be appreciated!

  I'm running wubi on XP machine. Started out originally with 8.04, and gradually upgraded to 10.04. Recently, I was creating linux bootable USB drive, and put it in my system to see if it would work. After booting the LiveOS, and rebooting my machine, I know get the error Cannot find grldr in all devices when booting Ubuntu. I don't know what grldr is, but I assume it is the GRUB Loader. Did booting the LiveOS screw with my MBR perhaps? How can I fix this, and if not, is it possible to reinstall wubi, without losing anything of what I have now?

• Mouse scroll wheel in Citrix

  Hi all, One of my users is experiencing a problem whereby the mouse scroll does not work on the Citrix published application. I have tried to install mouse drivers on his local PC as well as swapping the USB with a PS/2 mouse but still no go. I have researched this issue for a few days but have not been able to find a fix. PC is running Windows XP and ICA client is version 10 I am pretty sure its a problem local to that PC since every other user using the application published on the same server are not having any issues. What could it be?

For typing purposes I use two keyboards: The Inbuilt Laptop Keyboard A Standard External Desktop Grade USB Keyboard Since yesterday, My inbuilt keyboard's keys have gone all awry. This is Similar to http://superuser.com/questions/11537/keyboard-keys-not-working-or-resulting-in-the-wrong-key But the high point is that the external keyboard is working just fine. I have already tried System Restore, Reinstalling Keyboard Drivers etc. but to no avail. This is really bugging. Please Help. Thanks in Advance.

• Wyse Z Class Thin Client (WES7) Image Deployment

  We are currently working on deploying a few Wyse WES7 thin clients (Z Class, exact model escapes me at the moment). We have WDM setup, and are able to see new clients show up, interact with them, pull/push images. Our current workflow is something like this: Unpack & boot up the device Disable Windows Firewall, reboot Device shows up in WDM Publish our custom image to the new device. My question is whether or not there is a way I can bypass step 2, and put my image on the client right out of the box. Either using PXE or USB boot disk, such that I can boot into some sort of menu and tell the client to pull a particular image from the WDM server. With HP thin clients, we have a rule setup which detects new clients on the network and pushes our custom image to them first time they show up. I haven't been able to figure it out with Wyse.

• Changing privilege rights on Arch Linux for a particular program

  I am quite new to linux and have had issues surrounding every program that I install. Basically, anything that is placed outside of my home directory requires a sudo call prior to opening/executing. I cannot write to files, open usb devices, or run programs that exist outside of this directory (specifically, above this directory). I know this is a privilege problem, but I come here to ask how this can be permanently stopped. How can I configure things such that when programs are installed I do not have to manually find the executable and change its privilege requirements?

  I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system.   I am using Microsoft Office Communicator with a USB headset as my work phone. OCS is connected to our PABX so we can take and make calls to regular, non-OCS phones. When making an external call to a cellphone, it can take up to 5-10 seconds for audio to start flowing. eg: Work Phone Cellphone - dial cellphone (ringing) (ringing) answer cellphone (hearing nothing) speak "1" . speak "2" . speak "3" . ... . speak "14" hear "15" speak "15" hear "16" speak "16" Has anyone experienced this kind of thing with an OCS setup? Any pointers?

• Choosing a very basic Linux distro with minimal boot time?

  I've had Ubuntu for a year now, like it but it doesn't match my needed configuration for my old laptop. So... I am using Linux mainly for webapps so I don't care much about user interface. What I need is a distro which is small enough to install on a SD memory card (or USB) since I am removing the hard drive, all my data is in the cloud. I also want it to have as short boot time as possible. I tried Puppy Linux and it seems ok but it had preinstalled looots af small apps I don't need, I would really like to have a distro with minimal preinstallations and add them on my own. So what are my choices and why would you recommend these?

• Windows lowers volume because of "communication"

  Randomly, or at system sound (usb connect for example) Windows 8 lowers the volume of all other sources. (Same problem can exist on windows 7, just look online). This is happening because of the "communication detection" made to detect phone calls and then lower volume. But in my case it happens all the time without reason as if windows always considers myself in a call. Do any of you have the same problem? is this a driver issue or a windows issue? I know this has been posted many times but they usually just tell you to turn off the setting above. I'm looking for an explanation or a solution :). Thanks for your feedback and ideas.

• Logitech MK300 : "no driver found"

  Hi I bought kewyboard and mouse from Logitech. The model is MK300. I wanna run 64-bits Windows 7 with this. When I connect the USB-receiver, Windows is trying to install it but gives me the error message: "no driver found". I tried to download SetPoint 4.80, but that didn't help. I have rebooted the computer several of times, tried different USB'ports, and have allso tried menye different mouses from Logitech. Non of this works. Have someone any suggestions for how I can fix my problem?

• Can't Install Windows 2008 R2 on Lenovo Laptop With SSD

  I am trying to install Windows Server 2008 R2 on a new Lenovo X201 or T410 laptop. Setup halts with the following pop-up: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note: If the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive you can safely remove it for this step. The CD drive is obviously working, as it's booting from CD to get to this point. The only thing I can think is that it is to do with the fact they have SSD disks in - but that's just a guess. (Edit - One extra thing that may or may not be relevant: it's the 64 bit version of Server 2008 R2)

• What is this jumper for on my new motherboard?

  I am building a new PC, I just got my motherboard in the mail today. It is a ASRock X58 Extreme 3. I am reading over the manual for it and one of the jumpers says this. There is a 3 pin jumper labeled 1 2 3, with pins 1 and 2 shorted by default it is "+5v" If I manually change it to short jumper pins 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2 then it will be "+5vSB (standby) for PS/2 or USB wake up events. So I am confused as to exactly what this is for. Can someone explain what it means, why I would want one other the other?
