• Looking for easiest, most simple solution to run a customised DNS Server for my local network on Windows 7.

  I need to forward some websites, such as http://testing.server/ to an fixed IP address on my local network. I can do this easily on one computer using the hosts file. However, I need this to work for all machines on my network. I think the best way to do this will be to setup my own DNS Servers and add the custom DNS settings there. However, I'm looking for the simplest way possible to do this - I really don't want to spend hours setting up Unix Servers and running tricky terminal based scripts just to do this! My server is a standard Windows 7 machine. My dream would be a nice simple windows program with a GUI where I could input my ISP's DNS server and it would use those records, unless I had specifically set up my own DNS for a domain to use instead. If it had a web based admin system that was accessible from another computer on the network that would be even better. Does anyone know of anything that can do this? Many thanks indeed.

I would like to make a duplicate of this machine with all setting the same, except the domain would be a slight variation of the current domain (think winnet to winnet2). Would it be easiest to try to clone the hard drive while the machine is running and change the domain on the clone in a different machine or export the data and import it on a different box?

  Now that Samba 4 has finally been released we find ourselves in new position of having a choice of of either upgrading our Samba 3 domain to either a Samba 4 domain on Linux or a Windows AD domain on Windows 2012. Given that we are equally expert at managing Windows and Linux servers, is there any reason not to use Samba 4 over AD on Windows; specifically: Are there functional differences from a Windows/OS X client perspective? Are there issues with other services that use AD, such as storage appliances that use AD/Kerberos for authentication/authorisation. Will the Microsoft "System Centre" suite of tools and other similar products work seamlessly? How will Samba 4 handle AD's Multimaster DC model and FMSO roles. Are there any other issues to be aware of, such as vendor support?

  I have a setup of a laptop connected to a cellular IPv4 network (3G usb dongle) and PC connected to another IPv4/IPv6 network. Both have been configured to run as IPv6 routers and each has its IPv6 network. The laptop connects to the Internet via the 3G network with IPv4 address (private one and it is mostly changing) on one interface and has the other interface on AP mode providing its own private IPv6 network (2001:db8:444::/64). The PC connects to the Internet via the organization network with both public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses on one interface and has the other interface on AP mode providing its own private IPv6 network (2001:db8:222::/64). Both running Linux Ubuntu. Is it possible to get the two IPv6 network (2001:db8:222::/64 and 2001:db8:444::/64) to communicate over the IPv4 Internet? Is openvpn of any good in this case to get IPv6 traffic over IPv4-IPv4 tunnel? Thanks for helping in advance

  Routers and switches with RADIUS authentication can be configured such that login is disabled for locally configured users as long as the RADIUS server is available. If the RADIUS server becomes unavailable, they fall back to allowing login as a locally configured user. Is it possible to achieve the same effect with Linux machines using winbind to authenticate Active Directory users? I have a feeling it could be done with the right PAM configuration, but I'm not very far along on the PAM learning curve...

• 2 Computers, same network, different outgoing speeds when uploading to internet?

  I have 2 work machines in my office, a PowerMac G5 and a MacBook Air. Both behind an IPCop firewall. The PowerMac is connected through a gigabit switch, the MacBook Air is connected through a Netgear 802.11g access point that is then plugged into the gigabit switch. There is also a FreeNAS box, both machines are able to read and write files to it at close to their pipe speeds. The main problem is when I am trying to upload files to the internet at large. The G5 is only hitting 0.1 - 0.25 Mbps. The Macbook is able to hit 2-3 Mbps. The setup (G5 / IPCop / Network) has been the same for 5 years. The issues with the internet speed started about 3 months ago. I hadn't tested on the Macbook at this point. I had complained to the ISP, they said their modem needed a firmware update, did that nothing changed. Reset IPCop, turned off squid, etc. No changes. The ISP switched the office over to a better plan with a theoretical 6 Mbps up, still no change. At this point I tried testing the Macbook, and lo and behold there's the speed. But why? I have tried changing out everything, cables, switches, using another ethernet port on the G5, wiping the system, using DHCP, using manual IPs, changing DNS servers, etc. Nothing works. I figured that if there was something horribly wrong with the network, then internally I would find a similar issue, but that is perfect. iperf, ping, etc show no dropped packets and near saturation of the internal network.   I have a working Fedora 9 system that's set up to authenticate users via PAM - krb5 - Active Directory. I'm migrating this to Fedora 14, and everything works, but it's working too well :-) On Fedora 9, if a Linux user updated their password, it did not propagate to their Active Directory account. On Fedora 14, it is changing their A/D password. The problem is I don't want A/D to be updated.   Imagine a scenario as follows: Lets say you have a central computer which generates a lot of data. This data must go through some processing, which unfortunately takes longer than to generate. In order for the processing to catch up with real time, we plug in more slave computers. Further, we must take into account the possibility of slaves dropping out of the network mid-job as well as additional slaves being added. The central computer should ensure that all jobs are finished to its satisfaction, and that jobs dropped by a slave are retasked to another. The main question is: What approach should I use to achieve this? But perhaps the following would help me arrive at an answer: Is there a name or design pattern to what I am trying to do? What domain of knowledge do I need to achieve the goal of getting these computers to talk to each other? (eg. will a database, which I have some knowledge of, be enough or will this involve sockets, which I have yet to have knowledge of?) Are there any examples of such a system? The main question is a bit general so it would be good to have a starting point/reference point. Note I am assuming constraints of c++ and windows so solutions pointing in that direction would be appreciated.

What I would like to be able to do is go to a specific PC and see what group policies are being applied, so I can focus on those policies. • Why does my computer not always automatically request a new DHCP lease when switching networks?

  I've noticed an interesting problem recently where my laptop will not automatically refresh my DHCP lease when changing between wireless networks. Instead, it will attempt to use the existing lease for the new network. Of course, since each network has different settings any connections will fail when using the old lease. While Windows will eventually request a new DHCP lease, it's often much faster for me to release the old lease and request a new, correct, lease. It puzzles me as to why this is not automatically done when associating to the network? One possible cause is that the laptop is put to sleep while connected to one network, then woken when in range of the other network. Nevertheless, I would expect that the lease would be renewed when the laptop associates to the other network rather than attempting to use the old lease. It should be noted that the two networks are completely different, both in terms of size, number of APs, network settings, SSIDs etc. One network is my home network and the other one is the campus-wide network at my University.

  I just need a technical solution for the sake of my group's shared passwords, projects, works, etc. safety. Our network has Active Directory with public/groups/users and NTFS permissions, under a Windows Server 2003 which will soon migrate to Windows Server 2008 R2. Our IT crowd is small, consisting of 2 DBAs, 4 designers, 6 developers (including me), 2 netadmins and (a lot of) tech supporters, everyone has local admin rights. Those 2 network admins weren't the ones who set the network up, they just took the lift recently when the previous ones quit. We usually find them laughing at private contents from users stored in the groups AD, sabotaging documents that don't match their personal tastes and, finally, this week we found out they stole a project we (developers and DBAs) were finishing and, long before, they presented it to the CEO as theirs without us knowing. I'm a systems analyst, and initially my group decided to store critical content, like shared passwords, inside encrypted .zip files. Unfortunately we couldn't do the same to the other hundreds of folders and files, which included the stolen project, because the zipping process would take too long for every update. We also tried an encrypted Subversion repository under SSL, but there are many dummies (~38 atm) involved in the projects that have trouble using TortoiseSVN when contributing, and very oftenly we had to fix messed up updates. Well, I think these two give the idea of what we've been trying to reach. So, is there a practical "individual" protection for our extensive data or my hope can already be euthanized? P.S.: Seriously, at the place where I live/work, political corruption gone the wildest, so denounce related options are likely impracticable. Yet both netadmins have strong "political bond" with the CEO and the President, hence their lousy behavior and our failed delation attempts.

  our entire domain has thousands of distribution groups, while i can use the script referenced here: How to get a list of all Distribution Lists and their Members in Exchange 2007? to pull all distribution groups and their members, it would be too hard to filter through all results. I particularilly need to pull either a. (preferred) all groups (both distribution and security) and their members inside of an OU (this particular OU contains over 100 hundred groups) or b. all groups and members matching a name starting with exampl* dsquery | dsget looks like could almost serve that purpose however when i did: dsquery group "OU=my-department,DC=blah,DC=blahblah,DC=com" -name * | dsget group -members (-expand) c:\my-department.txt it displays only the members without showing which group they belong to. The output I need should have: group name, members and potentially expanded sub-groups. i am still researching on how to get this done, seems like i can somehow make the above referenced script to search only inside of an OU, but i am not very familiar with powershell. any help would be appreciated, thank you.

• How to join a Windows Domain and Map Network Drives?

  I just installed the current build for Ubuntu on a partition for my work computer. I am a novice when it comes to Linux/Ubuntu, which is why I installed it along side windows. I want to learn how to operate and use Ubuntu much more than I do now, so I figured installing it and trying to do day to day functions here would be a "Thrown into the pool with sharks" way to do it, and I like that way. I did however have a few questions: We are on a Domain in Windows, is there any way to join that domain using the Ubuntu partition? We Also have 16 mapped network drives. I don't actually need ALL of them mapped for Ubuntu, but is there a way to Map at least one of them to see/use here in Ubuntu. Outlook Corporate email, how can I sign in/use it while...well, you get the idea. As I said earlier, I am VERY new to Ubuntu, i've only played around with it a bit at home and never at the office. If you could simplify it down for me a bit, that would be great.

  Our marketing department comes back with "active directory integration" being a key customer request, but our company does not seem to have the attention span to (1) decide on what functional changes we want to make toward this end, (2) interview a broad range of customer to identify the most requested functional changes, and (3) still have this be the "hot potato" issue next week. To help me get beyond the broad topic of "active directory integration," what does it mean in your .NET app, both ASP.NET and WinForms? Here are some sample changes I have to consider: When creating and managing users in your app, are administrators presented with a list of all AD users or just a group of AD users? When creating new security groups within your app (we call them Departments, like "Human Resources"), should this create new AD groups? Do administrators assign users to security groups within your app or outside via AD? Does it matter? Is the user signed on to your app by virtue of being signed on to Windows? If not, do you track users with your own user table and some kind of foreign key into AD? What foreign key do you use to link app users to AD users? Do you have to prove your login process protects user passwords? What foreign key do you use to link app security groups to AD security groups? If you have a WinForms component to your app (we have both ASP.NET and WinForms), do you use the Membership Provider in your WinForms app? Currently, our Membership and Role management predates the framework's version, so we do not use the Membership Provider. Am I missing any other areas of functional changes? Followup question Do apps that support "active directory integration" have the ability to authenticate users against more than one domain? Not that one user would authenticate to more than one domain but that different users of the same system would authenticate against different domains.

  I'm trying to use jQuery to load the body of another HTML document, which contains our AdSense banner. It should display under each blog entry when in list view. I'm able to get it to load text, even images, but not the banner; the banner is a small script. Here is the website we are working with: http://neverknowtech.com/data/ (that's a test page, and the 'entry' displayed there contains the intended body content) As you can see here the body code does include an ad, and the word 'Ad'. The word 'Ad' is shown correctly below the post (as it is in list view) but the script for the Google Ad doesn't seem to make it.
