• Best practices retrieving XML/stream from HTTP in Android

  Hello everyone, what are the best practices parsing XML from an HTTP resource in Android? I've been using HttpURLConnection to retrieve an InputStream, wrapping it with a BufferedInputStream, and then using SAX to parse the buffered stream. For the most part it works, though I do receive error reports of SocketTimeoutException: The operation timed out or general parsing error. I believe it's due to the InputStream. Would using HttpClient instead of HttpURLConnection help? If yes, why? Should the stream be output to a file, having the file parsed instead of the stream? Any input or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

• Why does Excel expose an 'Evaluate' method at all?

  A few questions have come up recently involving the Application.Evaluate method callable from Excel VBA. The old XLM macro language also exposes an EVALUATE() function. Both can be quite useful. Does anyone know why the general expression evaluator is exposed, though? My own hunch is that Excel needed to give people a way to get ranges from string addresses, and to get the value of named formulas, and just opening a portal to the expression evaluator was the easiest way. But of course you don't need the ability to evaluate arbitrary expressions just to do that. Application.Evaluate seems kind of...unfinished. It isn't very well documented, and there are quite a few quirks and limitations (as described by Charles Williams here: http://www.decisionmodels.com/calcsecretsh.htm) with what is exposed. I suppose the answer could be simply "why not expose it?", but I'd be interested to know what design decisions led to this feature. Failing that, I'd be interested to hear other hunches.

The chosen features will affect the needed number of hidden neurons and the needed number of training examples. • Performance concern when using LINQ "everywhere"?

  After upgrading to ReSharper5 it gives me even more useful tips on code improvements. One I see everywhere now is a tip to replace foreach-statements with LINQ queries. Take this example: private Ninja FindNinjaById(int ninjaId) { foreach (var ninja in Ninjas) { if (ninja.Id == ninjaId) return ninja; } return null; } This is suggested replaced with the following using LINQ: private Ninja FindNinjaById(int ninjaId) { return Ninjas.FirstOrDefault(ninja => ninja.Id == ninjaId); } This looks all fine, and I'm sure it's no problem regarding performance to replace this one foreach. But is it something I should do in general? Or might I run into performance problems with all these LINQ queries everywhere?

• Prefered method for looping sound flash as3

  Hi there, I'm having some issues with looping a sound in flash AS3, in that when I tell the sound to loop I get a slight delay at the end/beginning of the audio. The audio is clipped correctly and will play without a gap on garage band. I know that there are issues with sound in general in flash, bugs with encodings and the inaccuracies with the SOUND_COMPLETE event (And Adobe should be embarrassed with their handling of these issues) I have tried to use the built in loop argument in the play method on the Sound class and also react on the SOUND_COMPLETE event, but both cause a delay. But has anyone come up with a technique for looping a sound without any noticeable gap?

But I am interested to hear whatever logical thought processes people go through when learning a new concept or trying to get their brain around code they might not have ever seen before. Basically, what general steps does one take to to break down problems and what does it take to "get it"? If you were to diagram a flowchart of how your mental process works when you look at code or try to solve a problem what might it look like? What common references, tips, and mental assumptions do you find useful in problem solving? How is this different between different domains? For example in what ways is a web programmer's thought process similar or different from a traditional desktop app developer's process?

• Refreshing a binding that uses a value converter

  I have a WPF UI that is bound to an object.   I am starting a new project for a client today. I have done some rails projects before but never bothered writing tests for them. I'd like to change that starting with this new project. I am aware there are several testing tools, but am a bit confused as to which I should be using. I heard of RSpec, Mocha, Webrat, and Cucamber. Please keep in mind I never really wrote any regular tests, so my knowledge of testing in general is quite limited. How would you suggest I get started? Thanks!

  I'm going through "Intermediate Perl" and it's pretty cool. I just finished the section on "The Schwartzian Transform" and after it sunk in I started to wonder why the transform doesn't use a cache. In lists that have several repeated values the transform recomputes the value for each one so I thought why not use a hash to cache results. Here' some code: # a place to keep our results my %cache; # the transformation we are interested in sub foo { # expensive operations } # some data my @unsorted_list = ....; # sorting with the help of the cache my @sorted_list = sort { ($cache{$a} or $cache{$a} = &foo($a)) <=> ($cache{$b} or $cache{$b} = &foo($b)) } @unsorted_list; Am I missing something? Why isn't the cached version of the Schwartzian transform listed in books and in general just better circulated because on first glance I think the cached version should be more efficient?

  I come from a web developer background, so I'm fairly familiar with PHP and JavaScript, but I'd eventually like to branch out into other languages. At this point, I don't have a particular direction or platform that I'm leaning toward as far as learning a new language or what I would use it for, but I would like to learn a little bit more about programming languages in general and what each one is used for. I've often heard (and I agree) that you should use the right tool for the job, so what jobs are each programming language best suited for? • rewrite URLs in CSS files

  Hi, I'm writing a Maven plugin that merges CSS files together. So all the CSS files that match /foo/bar/*.css might get merged to /foo/merged.css. A concern is that in a file such as /foo/bar/baz.css there might be a property such as: background: url("images/pic.jpg") So when the file is merged into /foo/merged.css this will need to be changed to background: url("bar/images/pic.jpg") The recalculated URL obviously depends on 3 factors: original URL original CSS file location merged CSS file location Assuming that the original and merged CSS files are both on the same filesystem, is there a general formula (or Java library) that can be used to calculate the new url given these 3 inputs? • Are there any purely functional Schemes or Lisps?

  Over the past few months, I've put a lot of effort into learning (or attempting to learn) several functional programming languages. I really like math, so they have been very natural for me to use. Simply to be more specific, I have tried Common Lisp, Scheme, Haskell, OCaml, and (a little bit of) Erlang. I did not like the syntax of OCaml and do not have enough Erlang knowledge to make a judgment on it yet. Because of its consistent and beautiful (non-)syntax, I really like Scheme. However, I really do appreciate the stateless nature of purely functional programming languages such as Haskell. Haskell looks very interesting, but the amount of inconsistent and non-extendable syntax really bothered me. In the interest of preventing a Lisp vs Haskell flame war, just pretend that I can't use Haskell for some other reason. Therefore, my question is: Are there any purely functional Schemes (or Lisps in general)?

  Hey, I have been given a general explanation of how a computer boots up. However a very loose definition to the term 'boot file' was given. Could someone explain 'boot file' to me in a very simple but concise manner? I have read about the POST, the clearing of registers, BIOS in the CMOS, etc. What I understand is that the boot file is different to the boot program. the boot program gets the system ready to accept an OS while the boot file contains some of the parameters by which the system will operate. The boot program is stored on ROM and the boot file isnt? cheers, jazz

  Hello, I want to extend a web server which is only able to handle RPC handling now. The web server is written in C#. It provides a abstract handler function like following: public string owsHandler(string request, string path, string param, OSHttpRequest httpRequest, OSHttpResponse httpResponse) And I wrote following code to handle image files: Bitmap queryImg = new Bitmap(path); System.IO.MemoryStream stream = new System.IO.MemoryStream(); queryImg.Save(stream, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Bmp); queryImg.Dispose(); byte[] byteImage = stream.ToArray(); stream.Dispose(); return Convert.ToBase64String(byteImage); And I test it in the browser, the image is returned but the image dimension info is missed. Shall I add something more to the code? Or is any general way to server static files? I do not want to serve it in a ASP.net server. Thanks

  I've searched Google, but only found information on how to setup a feedburner for wordpress or other blogging services. I've also searched stackoverflow, but not found the right information. I'm creating a website, for which I want to have an RSS. Feedburner seems to be a good, free option - so I'd like to use that. When I go to feedburner, using my google account, it says the website I want to claim is invalid. And it's not clear how to make it valid. I also have no experience with RSS (and really websites in general), so I'm not sure where to go from here. What are the steps I need to take, starting from scratch, to add an RSS feed (with feedburner) to a website?

• For a .Net project, what file extensions should I exclude from source control?

  Everytime I start a project I have to think carefully about which files to exclude from source control. Has someone made a list of the criteria so I can look it up from the beginning? I work on my own so I have not got round to it. I appreciate that in the case of a DLL, you would want to include some and exclude others, so it is not just dependent on the file extension. My projects are ASP.Net, although a general discussion of other templates would also be useful.

How do I find out, if the user owns an entire street? street table with columns (id/name) house table with columns (id/street_id [foreign key] owner table with columns (id/house_id/user_id) [join table with foreign keys] So far, I'm using count which returns the result: select count(*), street_id from owner left join house on owner.house_id = house.id group by street_id where user_id = 1 count(*) | street_id 3 | 1 2 | 2 A more general count: select count(*) from house group by street_id returns: count(*) | street_id 3 | 1 3 | 2 How can I find out, that user 1 owns the entire street 1 but not street 2?   Hi I'm not sure if this is an appropriate question for StackOverflow. I have a friend show wants a simple "Brochure Ware" web site. I could make it for him but it would be better if he could manage it himself. Are there any services out there that allow a non-technical person to create and maintain a very simple site? I'm thinking just a few pages - contact, about, home with some photos and general info. He also wants to sell some stuff but I'm going to suggest he does this using EBay but the web site would be a handy reference for potential customers who want to know more about him and his services. • What's a simple way to web-ify my command-line daemon?

  Suppose I have a simple daemon type script that I run on my webserver. I run it in a terminal, with gnu screen, so I can keep an eye on it. That works fine (incidentally, I use this trick). But now suppose I'd like to make a web page where I can keep an eye on my script's output. What's the easiest way to do that? Notes: This is mainly for myself and a couple co-hackers so if websockets is the answer and it only works on Chrome or something, that's acceptable. But I'm hoping for a simpler, quick-and-dirty solution, and especially a general way to quickly do this for any script I might want to keep an eye on from a browswer.

• What is more interesting or powerful: Curry/Mercury/Lambda-Prolog/your suggestion.

  Hi! I would like to ask you about what formal system could be more interesting to implement from scratch/reverse engineer. I've looked through some existing and rather open (open in the sense of free/open-source) projects of logical/declarative programming systems. I've decided to make up something similar in my free time, or at least to catch the general idea of implementation. It would be great if some of these systems would provide most of the expressive power and conciseness of modern academic investigations in logic and it's relation with computational models. What would you recommend to study at least at the conceptual level? For example, Lambda-Prolog is interesting particularly because it allows for higher order relations, but AFAIK (I might really be mistaken :)) is based on intuitionist logic and therefore lack the excluded-middle principle; that's generally a disatvantage for me.. I would also welcome any suggestions about modern logical programming systems which are less popular but more expressive/powerful. I guess, this question will need refactoring, but thank you in advance! :)

• Ethics of assisting other programmers, where do we draw the line?

  In general, not just in relation to stackoverflow, sometimes I'm asked a programming question for which the answer will probably be used for good purposes, but there is a chance that it could not be. Two recent examples which reminded me of some real world questions I've been asked are: Send email to many users, and keep a formless application from closing for a keyboard hook Though I don't believe the intent of the authors of those questions is in any way nefarious, occasionally someone does ask such a question for purposes of aiding a spamming effort, or creating a keylogger. Even though the questioner and answerers had good intent, a 3rd party could pervert those answers to create a piece of malware or a spam utility. Should we always trust the questioner to use the answer for good? Should we feel obligated to ask the purpose of a question, and how the answer will be used? And how can we prevent answers from being overheard (when asked verbally) or being referenced (when posted publicly online) and then used for unsavory purposes?

• Send Keyboard Events from one Form to another Form

  Hello, my question is quite simple: Our C# application has one MainForm with a menu and several keyboard shortcuts associated with the menu entries. Now we need to trigger the menu entries from some child forms too. But since the MainForm is inactive when one of the child forms is active, the shortcuts do not work. Is there a simple way to propagate all keyboard events from the child form to the 'Owner' form? Or just to another form in general? Ah, and we cannot use some low level windows stuff, because we need to run the application on Mono/Linux too.
