• How to set up a home SIP Server/Proxy for multi ring?

  I have a sip account which only allows one device to be registered. When i'm at home I want incoming calls to be able to ring on multiple devices. All of these devices are connected to the local network. I'm guessing the way to do this is using a local server/proxy that would allow multiple registrations which then forwards traffic to/from my sip provider. What a simple way to do this on either OS X, Ubuntu or using some low cost SIP router hardware?

• Windows 7 Error Recovery upon boot

  My system doesn't boot at all, upon starting it takes me to the Windows Error Recovery screen saying "Windows failed to start, a recent software or hardware change might be the cause" and gives two options Launch System Repair (Recommended) Start Windows normally But neither options work, upon clicking either of them, some progress bars get displayed and the screen just freezes on "Starting Windows". I tried booting from the Windows 7 disk but it too freezes on the "Starting Windows" screen. I even tried booting from ubuntu, slax linux, but they don't work too.

• Will any USB DVD reader work with Apple Mac's?

I had a look around my local PC World today and only the more expensive drives explicitly state on the packaging that they were Mac compatible. Is this just because these products have been through Apple's hardware approval/testing programme, or do Mac's have some special requirement?

• Why is my mouse lagging?

  Don't remember this from earlier, but my mouse is lagging when I refresh specific websites in Chrome and Firefox. I can't observe such lags with Internet Explorer. • HP does not power off after shutdown (Vista)

  My HP d330 does not properly shutdown, after Vista "shutting down" message the lcd screen goes black, but both HD + Power Leds remain on.. Any ideas? No entries in EventViewer about this. Keyboard leds no more work after this partial shutdown so I assume hardware is partially shutdown..? Same problem occurs when I choose Sleep from shutdown menu

• Accessing temperature data on ESXi5.1?

  For ESXi5.1 (VMWare vSphere) images, I can see temperature data on the vSphere user interface (under Monitor / Hardware Status). I tried scouring the available snmp data using snmpwalk, but can't find the data anywhere in there. Maybe I'm missing something. Does anybody know the right MIB for temperature data? Otherwise, ow can that data be accessed? By the way, this is a machine installed from an image provided by HP.

• Quick method to determine SSD drive health?

  I have an Intel X-25M drive that was marked "failed" twice in a ZFS storage array, as noted here. However, after removing the drive, it seems to to mount, read and write in other computers (Mac, PC, USB enclosure, etc.) Is there a good way to determine the drive's present health? I feel that the previous failure in the ZFS solution was the convergence of bugs, bad error reporting and hardware. It seems like this drive may have some life in it, though.

• VMware Converter errors when creating Boot Camp VM

  I just got a new computer. My old computer had a Boot Camp installation of Windows 7, with VMWare running the Boot Camp installation in a virtual machine. On my new computer, I want Windows to strictly be a VM, so I downloaded the VMWare Converter software to create a virtual machine out of the Boot Camp partition. After finishing 95% of the converting process, I get a few messages Warning: Failed while updating boot.ini on the target machine's system volume. Warning: Failed while updating drive letters for the target volume layout. Error: Reconfiguration failed. And then it fails with FAILED: Unable to find the system volume, reconfiguration is not possible. I'm not sure what the problem is or how to fix it...I don't know much about virtualization or dual booting other than the simple instructions on how to set it up the first time.

  I have Fedora 11 and trying to get Xen working (which I think it is already) but the Virtual Machine Manager cannot find the hypervisor. When starting Virtual Machine Manager, I receive the following error Error determining default hypervisor. Could not populate a default connection. Make sure the appropriate virtualization packages are installed (kvm, qemu, etc.) and that libvirtd has been restarted to notice the change. • WPF ListView Keyboard Navigation Problem

  I've a listview like this ListView: ————----- Mango Orange Grapes Grapes Grapes Apple Strawberry Whenever i navigate using downarrow, the BlueHighlight pauses at the first Grapes, a dotted rectangle start from second grapes and pauses at the third grapes, then the BlueHighlight resumes from Apple. This seems weird and it grows more weird when the navigation is upwards. It jumps from Apple to Orange or mango. Is this due to Virtualization? It seems only the duplicate data (grapes) is creating the problem. Any Help?

  I am running a Linux server from 2000, I have Fedora12 installed as the OS. I know you can virtualize Windows XP on the system to be able to run Windows programs, but the problem is I My server has only one 1333Mhz Pentium 3 processor and 1G of Ram. granted this is a pretty kick ass computer for the day, but lacking the processor I'm afraid that I will not be able to run Windows virtualization to support Photoshop CS3. Is there any program out there that runs similar to Photoshop, like windows Digital Image suite 10, that will run smoothly in my Linux Fedora 12 environment? or can I virtualize windows and run the Windows digital image suite 10, without slowing or corrupting my system?

• Fast multi-window rendering with C#

  I've been searching and testing different kind of rendering libraries for C# days for many weeks now. So far I haven't found a single library that works well on multi-windowed rendering setups. The requirement is to be able to run the program on 12+ monitor setups (financial charting) without latencies on a fast computer. Each window needs to update multiple times every second. While doing this CPU needs to do lots of intensive and time critical tasks so some of the burden has to be shifted to GPUs. That's where hardware rendering steps in, in another words DirectX or OpenGL. I have tried GDI+ with windows forms and figured it's way too slow for my needs. I have tried OpenGL via OpenTK (on windows forms control) which seemed decently quick (I still have some tests to run on it) but painfully difficult to get working properly (hard to find/program good text rendering libraries). Recently I tried DirectX9, DirectX10 and Direct2D with Windows forms via SharpDX. I tried a separate device for each window and a single device/multiple swap chains approaches. All of these resulted in very poor performance on multiple windows. For example if I set target FPS to 20 and open 4 full screen windows on different monitors the whole operating system starts lagging very badly. Rendering is simply clearing the screen to black, no primitives rendered. CPU usage on this test was about 0% and GPU usage about 10%, I don't understand what is the bottleneck here? My development computer is very fast, i7 2700k, AMD HD7900, 16GB ram so the tests should definitely run on this one. In comparison I did some DirectX9 tests on C++/Win32 API one device/multiple swap chains and I could open 100 windows spread all over the 4-monitor workspace (with 3d teapot rotating on them) and still had perfectly responsible operating system (fps was dropping of course on the rendering windows quite badly to around 5 which is what I would expect running 100 simultaneous renderings). Does anyone know any good ways to do multi-windowed rendering on C# or am I forced to re-write my program in C++ to get that performance (major pain)? I guess I'm giving OpenGL another shot before I go the C++ route... I'll report any findings here. • How to associate Wi-Fi beacon info with a virtual "location"?

  We have a piece of embedded hardware that will sense 802.11 beacons, and we're using this to make a map of currently visible bssid -> signalStrength. Given this map, we would like to make a determination: Is this likely to be a location I have been to before? If so, what is its ID? If not, I should remember this location: generate a new ID. Now what should I store (and how should I store it) to make future determinations easier? This is for an augmented-reality app/game. We will be using it to associate particular characters and events with "locations". The device does not have internet or cellular access, so using a geolocation service is out of consideration for the time being. (We don't really need to know where we are in reality, just be able to determine if we return there.) It isn't crucial that it be extremely accurate, but it would be nice if it was tolerant to signal strength changes or the occasional missing beacon. It should be usable in relatively low numbers of access points (e.g. rural house with one wireless router) or many (wandering around a dense metropolis). In the case of a city, it should change location every few minutes of walking (continuously-overlapping signals make this a bit more tricky in naive code). A reasonable number of false positives (match a location when we aren't actually there) is acceptable. The wrong character/event showing up just adds a bit of variety. False negatives (no location match) are a bit more troublesome: this will tend to add a better-matching new location to the saved locations, masking the old one. While we will have additional logic to ensure locations that the device hasn't seen in a while will "orphan" any associated characters or events (if e.g. you move to a different country), we'd prefer not to mask and eventually orphan locations you do visit regularly. Some technical complications: signalStrength is returned as 1-4; presumably it's related to dB, but we are not sure exactly how; in my experiments it tends to stick to either 1 or 4, but occasionally we see numbers in between. (Tech docs on the hardware are sparse.) The device completes a scan of one-quarter of the channel space every second; so it takes about 4-5 seconds to get a complete picture of what's around. The list isn't always complete. (We are making strides to fix this using some slight sampling period randomization, as recommended by the library docs. We're also investigating ways to increase the number of scans without killing our performance; the hardware/libs are poorly behaved when it comes to saturating the bus.) We have only kilobytes to store our history. We have a "working" impl now, but it is relatively naive, and flaky in the face of real-world Wi-Fi behavior. (The "near-perfect match" code above would appear to make it harder to match in the future... It's mostly to keep new powerful APs from being associated with other locations, but you'd think we'd need something to counter this if e.g. an AP doesn't show up in the next 10 times I match a location.) I have a feeling that we're missing some things from set theory or graph theory that would assist in grouping/classification of this data, and perhaps providing a better "confidence level" on matches, and better robustness against missed beacons, signal strength changes, and the like. Also it would be useful to have a good method for mutating locations over time. Any useful resources out there for this sort of thing? Simple and/or robust approaches we're missing?

  I am part of an organization in which there is contention amongst some very competent folks as to whether or not testing cross-browser behavior for JavaScript applications on virtual machines (for IE6/7/8, FF2/3, Chrome on XP/Vista/7) is reliable. This is using VMWare server on a Linux box host. While the discrepancies seen are few, there are cases in which it has proven difficult to tell if it is a product of virtualization or just different machine configurations. My question to the community is, what is people experience with this? Is there any credence to the claim that VM pose inconsistencies, or are they generally spot-on reliable? Can we trust them?

  There are many approaches when it goes about running untrusted code on typical CPU : sandboxes, fake-roots, virtualization... What about untrusted code for GPGPU (OpenCL,cuda or already compiled one) ? Assuming that memory on graphics card is cleared before running such third-party untrusted code, are there any security risks? What kind of risks? Any way to prevent them ? (Possible sandboxing on gpgpu or other technique?) P.S. I am more interested in gpu binary code level security rather than hight-level gpgpu programming language security (But those solutions are welcome as well). What I mean is that references to gpu opcodes (a.k.a machine code) are welcome.

• Ask How-To Geek: Learning the Office Ribbon, Booting to USB with an Old BIOS, and Snapping Windows

Learning the New Office Ribbon Dear How-To Geek, I feel silly asking this (in light of how long the new Office interface has been out) but my company finally got around to upgrading from Windows XP and Office 2000 so the new interface it totally new to me. Can you recommend any resources for quickly learning the Office ribbon and the new changes? I feel completely lost after two decades of the old Office interface. Help! Sincerely, Where the Hell is Everything? Dear Where the Hell, We think most people were with you at some point in the last few years. “Where the hell is…” could possibly be the slogan for the new ribbon interface. You could browse through some of the dry tutorials online or even get a weighty book on the topic but the best way to learn something new is to get hands on. Ribbon Hero turns learning the new Office features and ribbon layout into a game. It’s no vigorous round of Team Fortress mind you, but it’s significantly more fun than reading a training document. Boot via USB with an Old BIOS Dear How-To Geek, I’m trying to repurpose some old computers by updating them with lightweight Linux distros but the BIOS on most of the machines is ancient and creaky. How ancient? It doesn’t even support booting from a USB device! I have a large flash drive that I’ve turned into a master installation tool for jobs like this but I can’t use it. The computers in question have USB ports; they just aren’t recognized during the boot process. What can I do? USB Bootin’ in Boise Dear USB Bootin’, It’s great you’re working to breathe life into old hardware! You’ve run into one of the limitations of older BIOSes, USB was around but nobody was thinking about booting off of it. Fortunately if you have a computer old enough to have that kind of BIOS it’s likely to also has a floppy drive or a CDROM drive. While you could make a bootable CDROM for your application we understand that you want to keep using the master USB installer you’ve made. In light of that we recommend PLoP Boot Manager. Think of it like a boot manager for your boot manager. Using it you can create a bootable floppy or CDROM that will enable USB booting of your master USB drive. Make a CD and a floppy version and you’ll have everything in your toolkit you need for future computer refurbishing projects. Read up on creating bootable media with PLoP Boot Manager here. Snapping Windows to Preset Coordinates Dear How-To Geek, Once upon a time I had a company laptop that came with a little utility that snapped windows to preset areas of the screen. This was long before the snap-to-side features in Windows 7. You could essentially configure your screen into a grid pattern of your choosing and then windows would neatly snap into those grids. I have no idea what it was called or if was anymore than a gimmick from the computer manufacturer, but I’d really like to have it on my new computer! Bend and Snap in San Francisco, Dear Bend and Snap, If we had to guess, we’d guess your company must have had a set of laptops from Acer as the program you’re describing sounds exactly like Acer GridVista. Fortunately for you the application was extremely popular and Acer released it independently of their hardware. If, by chance, you’ve since upgraded to a multiple monitor setup the app even supports multiple monitors—many of the configurations are handy for arranging IM windows and other auxiliary communication tools.
