  • How to inherit methods from a parent class in C++

    When inheriting classes in C++ I understand members are inherited. But how does one inherit the methods as well? For example, in the below code, I'd like the method "getValues" to be accessible not through just CPoly, but also by any class that inherits it. So one can call "getValues" on CRect directly. class CPoly { private: int width, height; public: void getValues (int* a, int* b) { *a=width; *b=height;} }; class CRect: public CPoly { public: int area () { return (width * height); } }; In other words, is there any way to inherit methods for simple generic methods like getters and setters?

  • Running for loop depending on size of string vector

    I have made a string vector vector actor_; and then added elements in it using push_back. I now want to display all of them, for which I need to run a loop according to the number of elements in the vector.   • ANSI C++: Diferences between delete and delete[]

    I was looking a snipset of code: int* ip; ip = new int[100]; delete ip; The example above states that: "This code will work with many compilers, but it should instead read:" int* ip; ip = new int[100]; delete [] ip; Is this indeed the case? I use the compiler "Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 11.00.7022 for 80x86" and does not complain (first example) while compiling. At runtime the pointer is set to NULL. Other compilers behave diferrently? Can a compiler not compain and issues can appear at runtime? Thanks, Sun

    I'd like to use a template operator() but am not sure if it's possible. Here is a simple test case that won't compile.     I have a file 0 3 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 6 8 1 Where the first number for each line is the row, the second number is the column, and the third number is the data contained in that row, column. This will be a given [8][8] array so I have already initialized everything to 0, but how can I store each of these data values? For example, I want [0][3] =2 and [1][2] = 3. I would like to keep track of the line on which I found that row, col, and data value. The code I have seems to work correctly in Visual Studio and GCC, but does not compile using the Comeau online compiler.   • Processing a resultset to look up foriegn keys (and poulate a new table!)

    Hi, I've been handed a dataset that has some fairly basic table structures with no keys at all. eg {myRubishTable} - Area(varchar),AuthorityName(varchar),StartYear(varchar),StartMonth(varcha),EndYear(varchar),EndMonth(varchar),Amount(Money) there are other tables that use the Area and AuthorityName columns as well as a general use of Month and Years so I I figured a good first step was to pull Area and Authority into their own tables. I now want to process the data in the original table and lookup the key value to put into my new table with foreign keys which looks like this. (lookup Tables) {Area} - id (int, PK), name (varchar(50)) {AuthorityName} - id(int, PK), name(varchar(50) (TargetTable) {myBetterTable} - id (int,PK), area_id(int FK-Area),authority_name_id(int FK-AuthorityName),StartYear (varchar),StartMonth(varchar),EndYear(varchar),EndMonth(varchar),Amount(money) so row one in the old table read MYAREA, MYAUTHORITY,2009,Jan,2010,Feb,10000 and I want to populate the new table with 1,1,1,2009,Jan,2010,Feb,10000 where the first '1' is the primary key and the second two '1's are the ids in the lookup tables. Can anyone point me to the most efficient way of achieving this using just SQL?   • byte and short data types in Java can accept the value outside the range by explicit cast. The higher data types however can not. Why?

    Let's consider the following expressions in Java. byte a = 32; byte b = (byte) 250; int i = a + b; This is valid in Java even though the expression byte b = (byte) 250; is forced to assign the value 250 to b which is outside the range of the type byte. Therefore, b is assigned -6 and consequently i is assigned the value 26 through the statement int i = a + b;. The same thing is possible with short as follows. short s1=(short) 567889999; Although the specified value is outside the range of short, this statement is legal. The same thing is however wrong with higher data types such int, double, folat etc and hence, the following case is invalid and causes a compile-time error. int z=2147483648; This is illegal, since the range of int in Java is from -2,147,483,648 to 2147483647 which the above statement exceeds and issues a compile-time error. Why is such not wrong with byte and short data types in Java?

    I got this code from a student, and it does not work properly because of a race condition involving x++ and x--. He added synchronized to the run() method trying to get rid of this bug, but obviously this only excludes threads from entering run() on the same object (which was never a problem in the first place) but doesn't prevent independent objects from updating the same static variable x at the same time. public class DataRace implements Runnable { static volatile int x; public synchronized void run() { for (int i = 0; i < 10000; i++) { x++; x--; } } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { Thread [] threads = new Thread[100]; for (int i = 0; i < threads.length; i++) threads[i] = new Thread(new DataRace()); for (int i = 0; i < threads.length; i++) threads[i].start(); for (int i = 0; i < threads.length; i++) threads[i].join(); System.out.println(x); // x not always 0! } } Since we cannot synchronize on x (because it is primitive), the best solution I can think of is to create a new static object like static String lock = ""; and enclose the x++ and x-- within a synchronized block, locking on lock. But this seems really awkward. Is there a better way?
