• Loss of privileges when enabeling auto log-in to encrypted home folder

  I use Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell and have an encrypted home folder. I enabled auto log-in through the system settings/users-admin menu, as I expected it didn't work (because of my encrypted home folder/user I suspect). But now I don't have privileges to mount my eksternal hard-drive, and I can no longer disable the auto log-in function, since the un-lock button in users-admin menu is grayed out. It seems like my users privileges has been degraded. Does any one have an solution to how I disable auto log-in and regain my privileges?

• Outlook 2010: How do I mark one recurring event public?

  My office utilizes Outlook 2010 and Exchange for e-mail, and our calendars show free/busy information by default. Background I work from home once a week, so I have created an event that lists me as tentative for the entire workday, titled "Working from Home - Available Remotely". However, those attempting to schedule a meeting with me won't see this title, and therefore won't think they can schedule an event. As much as I'd like to get out meetings (!) it's important that folks be able to schedule with me. Question Is there a way to make the title/details public for this one recurring event so that when others attempt to schedule a meeting with me, Attempted Solutions I've tried creating a public calendar and sharing all the details of that calendar. However, all of my calendars are not included when someone wants to schedule with me, and so I'm shown as free unless someone specifically looks at my public calendar. I've Googled around, to no avail.

• In which object should I implement wait()/notify()?

  I'm working in an Android project with multithreading. Basically I have to wait to the server to respond before sending more data. The data sending task is delimited by the flag boolean hasServerResponded so the Thread will loop infinitely without doing anything until the flag becomes true. Since this boolean isn't declared as volatile (yet), and also looping without doing anything wastes resources, I thought maybe I should use AtomicBoolean and also implement wait() / notify() mechanism. Should I use the AtomicBoolean object notify() and wait() methods or should I create a lock Object?

• Purchase existing domain and transfer to new registrar

  I am purchasing an existing domain from the owner who has it registered with GoDaddy. I want to transfer the domain to another registrar and of course have it under my name. If they update the registrant info to my name then it will lock down for 60 days. That's no good. If they simply transfer it to my registrar, how will they update the registrant info? I know about escrow services, but I don't feel I need one because I trust the seller and the amount is (relatively) small. Advice? Thanks!

• Clear / Flush cached memory

  I have a small VPS with 6GB RAM hosting a couple of websites. Recently I have noticed that my cached memory size is quite high - see below: Cpu(s): 0.1%us, 0.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 99.1%id, 0.0%wa, 0.2%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st Mem: 6113256k total, 5949620k used, 163636k free, 398584k buffers Swap: 1048564k total, 104k used, 1048460k free, 3586468k cached After investigating if there is some method to have this flushed or cleared I stumbled upon a command which is: sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches I read it could be useful to add this to a chron-task/job. Is this method recommended or could this lead to potential problems? The only concern I have is that I use one Magento installation on Memcached - could this have any negative effects on it? I am certainly not a pro therefore I would very much appreciate some expert advise. PS: My VPS runs on CentOS 5 x64 and I have WHM + NGINX installed.

• XenServer migrate machines between hosts

  I have a XenServer 5.6 Free setup with 5 VMs (Windows and Linux) using about 1.5TB of directly attached storage. Because our virtualisation needs have grown a bit, we currently are preparing a faster XenServer 6.0 Free machine with more RAM and a more storage. Again, directly attached disks. How can I migrate the VMs between XenServer machines? I don't need to keep the machines up and running during migration, but using VM export and import would definitely take too long. Would making a VM with the same configuration on new host and dd'ing the LVM volume over network be the only quick and least painful solution? Are there any "gotchas" I should look out for when doing something like this? The old machine has an AMD Phenom II, the new has Intel Xeon E5 CPUs.

• NDepend Evaluation: Part 3

  NDepend is a Visual Studio add-in designed for intense code analysis with the goal of high code quality. NDepend uses a number of metrics and aggregates the data in pleasing static and active visual reports. My evaluation of NDepend will be broken up into several different parts. In the first part of the evaluation I looked at installing the add-in.  And in the last part I went over my first impressions including an overview of the features.  In this installment I provide a little more detail on a few of the features that I really like. Dependency Matrix The dependency matrix is one of the rich visual components provided with NDepend.  At a glance it lets you know where you have coupling problems including cycles.  It does this with number indicating the weight of the dependency and a color-coding that indicates the nature of the dependency. Green and blue cells are direct dependencies (with the difference being whether the relationship is from row-to-column or column-to-row).  Black cells are the ones that you really want to know about.  These indicate that you have a cycle.  That is, type A refers to type B and type B also refers to Type A. But, that’s not the end of the story.  A handy pop-up appears when you hover over the cell in question.  It explains the color, the dependency, and provides several interesting links that will teach you more than you want to know about the dependency. You can double-click the problem cells to explode the dependency.  That will show the dependencies on a method-by-method basis allowing you to more easily target and fix the problem.  When you’re done you can click the back button on the toolbar. Dependency Graph The dependency graph is another component provided.  It’s complementary to the dependency matrix, but it isn’t as easy to identify dependency issues using the window. On a positive note, it does provide more information than the matrix. My biggest issue with the dependency graph is determining what is shown.  This was not readily obvious.  I ended up using the navigation buttons to get an acceptable view.  I would have liked to choose what I see. Once you see the types you want you can get a decent idea of coupling strength based on the width of the dependency lines.  Double-arrowed lines are problematic and are shown in red.  The size of the boxes will be related to the metric being displayed.  This is controlled using the Box Size drop-down in the toolbar.  Personally, I don’t find the size of the box to be helpful, so I change it to Constant Font. One nice thing about the display is that you can see the entire path of dependencies when you hover over a type.  This is done by color-coding the dependencies and dependants.  It would be nice if selecting the box for the type would lock the highlighting in place. I did find a perhaps unintended work-around to the color-coding.  You can lock the color-coding in by hovering over the type, right-clicking, and then clicking on the canvas area to clear the pop-up menu.  You can then do whatever with it including saving it to an image file with the color-coding. CQL NDepend uses a code query language (CQL) to work with your code just like it was a database.  CQL cannot be confused with the robustness of T-SQL or even LINQ, but it represents an impressive attempt at providing an expressive way to enumerate and interrogate your code. There are two main windows you’ll use when working with CQL.  The CQL Query Explorer allows you to define what queries (rules) are run as part of a report – I immediately unselected rules that I don’t want in my results.  The CQL Query Edit window is where you can view or author your own rules.  The explorer window is pretty self-explanatory, so I won’t mention it further other than to say that any queries you author will appear in the custom group. Authoring your own queries is really hard to screw-up.  The Intellisense-like pop-ups tell you what you can do while making composition easy.  I was able to create a query within two minutes of playing with the editor.  My query warns if any types that are interfaces don’t start with an “I”. WARN IF Count > 0 IN SELECT TYPES WHERE IsInterface AND !NameLike “I” The results from the CQL Query Edit window are immediate. That fact makes it useful for ad hoc querying.  It’s worth mentioning two things that could make the experience smoother.  First, out of habit from using Visual Studio I expect to be able to scroll and press Tab to select an item in the list (like Intellisense).  You have to press Enter when you scroll to the item you want.  Second, the commands are case-sensitive.  I don’t see a really good reason to enforce that. CQL has a lot of potential not just in enforcing code quality, but also enforcing architectural constraints that your enterprise has defined. I am not exactly sure what the bold part implies. Lets say that I'm creating some library, and I license it under the MIT license. Someone decides to fork that library and to create a closed-source, commercial version. According to the license, he should be free to do that. However, what does he additionally need to do under those terms? Credit me as the creator? I guess the "above copyright notice" refers to the "Copyright (C) [..." part, but, wouldn't that list me as the author of his code (although I technically typed out the code)? And wouldn't including the "permission notice" in what is now his library practically license it under the same conditions that I licensed my own library in? Or, am I interpreting this incorrectly? Does that refer to my obligations to include the copyright and the permission notice?

• View another persons calendar details in Outlook 2010

  I know how to view somebody else's calendar - there are 100 walk-throughs like this one on Google. However, this feature has changed in Outlook 2010, and you no longer get prompted for rights to view another person's calendar, and Outlook just displays their "Free/Busy" information, which doesn't help me. I'd like to request permissions to view the details of their appointments, but I can't find any place to request permissions on their calendar - Outlook 2010 just gives me "Free/Busy" rights and then appears to have no option to request additional rights. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

  If you are responsible for documenting your business practices, wouldn't it be nice to know if anyone is using the documentation? If the employees find it useful? You might want to consider surveying the users of the documentation on a regular basis. There are a number of free survey tools online (search for "free survey tools"), and you can have a survey ready in a matter of minutes. It's as simple as gathering a list of questions and a list of email addresses. For the questions, here are some suggestions. How often do you access the policy and procedure site? How useful is the site? How easy is it to navigate the site? How often are your questions answered on the site? What suggestions do you have to make the site more useful? You may want to consider just asking a few questions each month so that employees can complete the survey in less than 5 minutes (you'll get more responses). Make sure you have several comment boxes in the survey so that the employees can give suggestions. As the users of your documentation, the employees may have some terrific ideas that will enhance the usability of your policy and procedure site. • Proprietary AMD driver freezes my Ideapad

  I got this problem that I can't figure out what to do about. On Ideapad s205 with Ubuntu 12.04* (64), if I install Catalyst Centre 12.1 or newer it Freeze (lock's up), 1-3 times a day. It doesn't suffer freezing when using Radeon driver, but Radeon driver are considerably slower and flickers, so I would really prefer the proprietary driver (with no freezing). I reported the bug to launchpad but it doesn't get attention. -Also tried Ubuntu forums. Reported bug to AMD bug site "http://ati.cchtml.com/", but I don't think anybody reads it. Wrote AMD support several times, but get silly answers like "reinstall Windows". -Asked them to send the bug to Linux driver developers, but never heard a thing (more than once). The same nothing happens when writing to the feedback link from AMD driver download site. I'm so frustrated here, any advice would help. Thanks (*The same on Ubuntu 11.10)

  I'm looking for a plugin or something along those lines for creating arrows for an image I'm working on. Basically it's just a screenshot of some software, but I want to annotate it and have arrows on it pointing to the various components. It should look something like this or even something simpler. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be an easy, free way of creating good arrows for any of the screenshots, short of importing actual images of arrows! I prefer to use: GIMP Paint.NET Other free software (beer or freedom, whichever) What are my alternatives? I really want to stay away from Photoshop on this. Thanks.

• Mount an external drive at boot time only if it is plugged in.

  I've got an entry for an external harddrive in my fstab: UUID="680C0FE30C0FAAE0" /jgdata ntfs noatime,rw But sometimes this drive isn't plugged in at boot time. This leaves me half way through a boot, with a prompt to "Continue Waiting, press S or press M" but no keypress has any affect at this stage (including ctrl-alt-delete, not even caps-lock). Short of writing a script to check the output of fdisk -l, how can I mount this drive at boot time only if it is present? It would be handy to have an fdisk entry for this drive, so I can just type mount /jgdata instead of needing a device name.
