  • Odd behavior when recursively building a return type for variadic functions

    - by Dennis Zickefoose
This is probably going to be a really simple explanation, but I'm going to give as much backstory as possible in case I'm wrong. Advanced apologies for being so verbose. I'm using gcc4.5, and I realize the c++0x support is still somewhat experimental, but I'm going to act on the assumption that there's a non-bug related reason for the behavior I'm seeing. I'm experimenting with variadic function templates. The end goal was to build a cons-list out of std::pair. It wasn't meant to be a custom type, just a string of pair objects. The function that constructs the list would have to be in some way recursive, with the ultimate return value being dependent on the result of the recursive calls. As an added twist, successive parameters are added together before being inserted into the list. So if I pass [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] the end result should be {1+2, {3+4, 5+6}}. My initial attempt was fairly naive. A function, Build, with two overloads. One took two identical parameters and simply returned their sum. The other took two parameters and a parameter pack. The return value was a pair consisting of the sum of the two set parameters, and the recursive call. In retrospect, this was obviously a flawed strategy, because the function isn't declared when I try to figure out its return type, so it has no choice but to resolve to the non-recursive version. That I understand. Where I got confused was the second iteration. I decided to make those functions static members of a template class. The function calls themselves are not parameterized, but instead the entire class is. My assumption was that when the recursive function attempts to generate its return type, it would instantiate a whole new version of the structure with its own static function, and everything would work itself out. The result was: "error: no matching function for call to BuildStruct<double, double, char, char>::Go(const char&, const char&)" The offending code: static auto Go(const Type& t0, const Type& t1, const Types&... rest) -> std::pair<Type, decltype(BuildStruct<Types...>::Go(rest...))> My confusion comes from the fact that the parameters to BuildStruct should always be the same types as the arguments sent to BuildStruct::Go, but in the error code Go is missing the initial two double parameters. What am I missing here? If my initial assumption about how the static functions would be chosen was incorrect, why is it trying to call the wrong function rather than just not finding a function at all? It seems to just be mixing types willy-nilly, and I just can't come up with an explanation as to why. If I add additional parameters to the initial call, it always burrows down to that last step before failing, so presumably the recursion itself is at least partially working. This is in direct contrast to the initial attempt, which always failed to find a function call right away. Ultimately, I've gotten past the problem, with a fairly elegant solution that hardly resembles either of the first two attempts. So I know how to do what I want to do. I'm looking for an explanation for the failure I saw. Full code to follow since I'm sure my verbal description was insufficient. First some boilerplate, if you feel compelled to execute the code and see it for yourself. Then the initial attempt, which failed reasonably, then the second attempt, which did not. #include <iostream> using std::cout; using std::endl; #include <utility> template<typename T1, typename T2> std::ostream& operator <<(std::ostream& str, const std::pair<T1, T2>& p) { return str << "[" << p.first << ", " << p.second << "]"; } //Insert code here int main() { Execute(5, 6, 4.3, 2.2, 'c', 'd'); Execute(5, 6, 4.3, 2.2); Execute(5, 6); return 0; } Non-struct solution: template<typename Type> Type BuildFunction(const Type& t0, const Type& t1) { return t0 + t1; } template<typename Type, typename... • How to calculate point along a curve?

    - by Nicros
I am writing a custom animation for wpf and as a non math guy I have a couple questions... If I am given two Point3D's, the From and To, and assuming the origin is at 0,0,0 how do I calculate a curve between the two points? And once I have the curve 'plotted' and I know its length (how to do that too?) how can I calculate the x,y,z coords at some given distance along the line? Thanks!

  • Does Apple approve a kind of mark-up language for AppStore?

    - by Eonil
AppStore now rejects applications made with non-Apple like languages. (with modified contract) However, is it allowed using declarative mark-up language formed with XML? (like XHTML, but different schema) The declarative mark-up is a code too, but not a script or logic code. Just a passive, static data, but forms some layout and part of an application logic.

  • Best way to detect that HTML5 <canvas> is not supported

    - by brainjam
The standard way to deal with situations where the browser does not support the HTML5 <canvas> tag is to embed some fallback content, usually a polite version (and sometimes a less polite version) of <canvas>Your browser sucks</canvas> But the rest of the page remains the same, which may be inappropriate or misleading. I'd like some way of detecting canvas non-support so that I can present the rest of my page accordingly. What would you recommend?

  • C# Simple Event Handler for Setting Alarm

    - by yeeen
    Why does the following line "alarm.AlarmEvent += new AlarmEventHandler(alarm_Sound);" gives me "An object reference is required for the non-static field, method, or property 'AlarmClock.Alarm.alarm_Sound(object, System.EventArgs)'" public static void Main(string[] args) { Alarm alarm = new Alarm(new DateTime(2010, 4, 7, 23, 2, 0)); alarm.Set(); alarm.AlarmEvent += new AlarmEventHandler(alarm_Sound); } Full source code here: Program.cs AlarmEventArgs

  • Regex to match all of a set except certain ones

    - by Davy8
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't seem to find it (or know the proper wording to search for) Basically I want a regex that matches all non-alphanumeric except hyphens. So basically match \W+ except exclude '-' I'm not sure how to exclude specific ones from a premade set.

  • ASP.NET Caching : Good As Well As Bad ! Page shows old content!

    - by Shyju
I have an ASP.NET website where i have implemented page level caching using the OutPutCache directive. This boosted the page performance. My pages has few parts(Some buttons, links and labels) which are specific to the logged in user.If user is not logged in,they will see different links. Now Since i implemented the page level caching,Even after the user logged in,It's showing the old page content(Links and buttons meant for the Non logged in User). Caching is obviously good. But how to get rid of this problem ? Do i need to completely remove caching ?

  • How to explain method calls?

    - by forki23
Hi, let's consider a small method: int MyFunction(string foo, int bar) { ... } and some calls: MyFunction("",0) int x = MyFunction(foo1,bar1) How would you explain this to a non-technical persons? Has anybody a nice metaphor? I tried to explain method calling (or function application) several times, but I failed. Seems I can't find the right words here. Regards, forki

  • ArithmeticException thrown during BigDecimal.divide

    - by polygenelubricants
I thought java.math.BigDecimal is supposed to be The Answer™ to the need of performing infinite precision arithmetic with decimal numbers. Consider the following snippet: import java.math.BigDecimal; //... final BigDecimal one = BigDecimal.ONE; final BigDecimal three = BigDecimal.valueOf(3); final BigDecimal third = one.divide(three); assert third.multiply(three).equals(one); // this should pass, right? I expect the assert to pass, but in fact the execution doesn't even get there: one.divide(three) causes ArithmeticException to be thrown! Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ArithmeticException: Non-terminating decimal expansion; no exact representable decimal result. at java.math.BigDecimal.divide It turns out that this behavior is explicitly documented in the API: In the case of divide, the exact quotient could have an infinitely long decimal expansion; for example, 1 divided by 3. If the quotient has a non-terminating decimal expansion and the operation is specified to return an exact result, an ArithmeticException is thrown. Otherwise, the exact result of the division is returned, as done for other operations. Browsing around the API further, one finds that in fact there are various overloads of divide that performs inexact division, i.e.: final BigDecimal third = one.divide(three, 33, RoundingMode.DOWN); System.out.println(three.multiply(third)); // prints "0.999999999999999999999999999999999" Of course, the obvious question now is "What's the point???". I thought BigDecimal is the solution when we need exact arithmetic, e.g. for financial calculations. If we can't even divide exactly, then how useful can this be? Does it actually serve a general purpose, or is it only useful in a very niche application where you fortunately just don't need to divide at all? If this is not the right answer, what CAN we use for exact division in financial calculation? (I mean, I don't have a finance major, but they still use division, right???).

  • Error using a hyphen as an object property name in Flex

    - by John Leonard
I'm trying to assemble a header object for an api request. One of the headers is 'Content-Type'. The hyphen is causing a compile error. Flex is giving me: 1050 - Cannot assign to a non-reference value. I find it spiteful that they enjoy the use of a hyphen in the error message while I hang my head and come here for answers.

  • How would I set up this enum to return the image I want?

    - by Justen
I'm trying to set up this enum so that it has the ability to return the correct image, though I'm struggling with a way to incorporate the context since it is in a separate class. public enum CubeType { GREEN { public Drawable getImage() { return Context.getResources().getDrawable( R.drawable.cube_green ); } }; abstract public Drawable getImage(); } The error I'm getting is: Cannot make a static reference to the non-static method getResources() from the type Context

What am I doing wrong?

  • conflicting declaration when filling a static std::map class member variable

    - by Max
    I have a class with a static std::map member variable that maps chars to a custom type Terrain. I'm attempting to fill this map in the class's implementation file, but I get several errors. Here's my header file: #ifndef LEVEL_HPP #define LEVEL_HPP #include <bitset> #include <list> #include <map> #include <string> #include <vector> #include "libtcod.hpp" namespace yarl { namespace level { class Terrain { // Member Variables private: std::bitset<5> flags; // Member Functions public: explicit Terrain(const std::string& flg) : flags(flg) {} (...) }; class Level { private: static std::map<char, Terrain> terrainTypes; (...) }; } } #endif and here's my implementation file: #include <bitset> #include <list> #include <map> #include <string> #include <vector> #include "Level.hpp" #include "libtcod.hpp" using namespace std; namespace yarl { namespace level { /* fill Level::terrainTypes */ map<char,Terrain> Level::terrainTypes['.'] = Terrain("00001"); // clear map<char,Terrain> Level::terrainTypes[','] = Terrain("00001"); // clear map<char,Terrain> Level::terrainTypes['\''] = Terrain("00001"); // clear map<char,Terrain> Level::terrainTypes['`'] = Terrain("00001"); // clear map<char,Terrain> Level::terrainTypes[178] = Terrain("11111"); // wall (...) } } I'm using g++, and the errors I get are src/Level.cpp:15: error: conflicting declaration ‘std::map, std::allocator yarl::level::Level::terrainTypes [46]’ src/Level.hpp:104: error: ‘yarl::level::Level::terrainTypes’ has a previous declaration as ‘std::map, std::allocator yarl::level::Level::terrainTypes’ src/Level.cpp:15: error: declaration of ‘std::map, std::allocator yarl::level::Level::terrainTypes’ outside of class is not definition src/Level.cpp:15: error: conversion from ‘yarl::level::Terrain’ to non-scalar type ‘std::map, std::allocator ’ requested src/Level.cpp:15: error: ‘yarl::level::Level::terrainTypes’ cannot be initialized by a non-constant expression when being declared I get a set of these for each map assignment line in the implementation file.   • MS Access MSChart.Graph.8 not printing

    - by Tanj
Software: Microsoft Access 2007 SP2 Database File Version: Access 2000 I have an access program that I inherited from a previous employee. It uses forms for reports and since I don't have much experience in access I have continued to do this. I have created a copy of the program for another project and modified it to suit. I am having trouble getting more then one chart to print. All the charts display in form view, they all have the same properties (excepting data, position, etc.) For some reason they are not printing. They don't even show up in the print preview. I am thinking it must be something with the graphs themselves as they sometimes lose all information. I have to open the graphs in edit mode and change the data source from column to row and back again so that it gets redrawn. (Refresh doesn't fix it) So right now I don't even have a clue as to where to look so ideas are welcome. Edit #1 It seems to be a problem with linking to an unbound form. Subform Field Linker: Can't build a link between unbound forms. The query for the main form is SELECT tTest.ixTest, tMotorTypes.ixMotorType, tMotorTypes.asMotorType, tMotorTypes.fDeprecated, tTestType.asTest, tTest.asSerialNum, tTest.asOrderNum, tTest.asFrameNum, tTest.asRotorNum, tTest.asOperator, tTest.iStation, tTest.dtTestDate, tTest.ixTestType FROM tMotorTypes INNER JOIN (tTestType INNER JOIN tTest ON tTestType.ixTestType=tTest.ixTestType) ON tMotorTypes.ixMotorType=tTest.ixMotorType; The query for the chart is: SELECT qGraphRSTTemperatures.Frequency, qGraphRSTTemperatures.[Drive End], qGraphRSTTemperatures.[Non Drive End], qGraphRSTTemperatures.[Air In], qGraphRSTTemperatures.Core FROM qGraphRSTTemperatures ORDER BY qGraphRSTTemperatures.ixTemperature; Query qGraphRSTTemperatures: SELECT tElectricalData.dblFrequency AS Frequency, tTemperatures.dblDrvEnd AS [Drive End], tTemperatures.dblNonDrvEnd AS [Non Drive End], tTemperatures.dblAirIn AS [Air In], tTemperatures.dblCore AS Core, tSubTest.ixTest, tTemperatures.ixTemperature FROM (tSubTest INNER JOIN tElectricalData ON tSubTest.ixSubTest = tElectricalData.ixSubTest) LEFT JOIN tTemperatures ON tElectricalData.ixElectrical = tTemperatures.ixElectrical WHERE (((tSubTest.ixSubTestType)=5)) ORDER BY tSubTest.ixTest, tTemperatures.ixTemperature; So how come, in the form view it shows the graph with the correct data when linked thus: Child field: ixTest Master field: ixTest but won't print the graph. The graph will print if I remove the links, but then I have all the data from chart query as it is not limited by ixTest. edit #2 It seems to be a data retrieval/rendering issue in printing. Is there anything in printing that changes the context of records with respect to parent/child relationships?

  • Fastest primality test

    - by Grigory Javadyan
Hi. Could you suggest a fast, deterministic method that is usable in practice, for testing if a large number is prime or not? Also, I would like to know how to use non-deterministic primality tests correctly. For example, if I'm using such a method, I can be sure that a number is not prime if the output is "no", but what about the other case, when the output is "probably"? Do I have to test for primality manually in this case? Thanks in advance.

The issue arrives when I want to ignore "The ", "A ", "An " and other various non-alphanumeric characters (Talking to you "Weird Al" Yankovic and [dialog]). Django has a nice start '^(An?|The) +' but I want to ignore those and a few others of my choice. I am doing this in Django, using a MySQL db with utf8_bin collation.

  • Is there any boost-independent version of boost/tr1 shared_ptr

    - by Artyom
I'm looking for independent implementation of boost/tr1 shared_ptr, weak_ptr and enable_shared_from_this. I need: Boost independent very small implementation of these features. I need support of only modern compilers like GCC-4.x, MSVC-2008, Intel not things like MSVC6 or gcc-3.3 I need it to be licensed under non-copyleft LGPL compatible license like Boost/Mit/3-clause BSD. So I can include it in my library. Note - it is quite hard to extract shared_ptr from boost, at least BCP gives about 324 files...

  • Automatically capitalize first letter of first word in a new sentence in LaTeX

    - by Tom Hagen
I know one of LaTeX's bragging points is that it doesn't have this Microsoftish behavior. Nevertheless, it's sometimes useful. LaTeX already adds an extra space after you type a (non-backslashed) period, so it should be possible to make it automatically capitalize the following letter as well. Is there an obvious way to write a macro that does this, or is there a LaTeX package that does it already?
