  • Problems set-up Single Sign-On using Kerberos authentication

    - by user1124133
I need for Ruby on Rail application set authentication via Active Directory using Kerberos authentication. Some technical information: I are using Apache installed mod_auth_kerb In httpd.conf I added LoadModule auth_kerb_module modules/mod_auth_kerb.so In /etc/krb5.conf I added following configuration [logging] default = FILE:/var/log/krb5libs.log kdc = FILE:/var/log/krb5kdc.log admin_server = FILE:/var/log/kadmind.log [libdefaults] default_realm = EU.ORG.COM dns_lookup_realm = false dns_lookup_kdc = false ticket_lifetime = 24h forwardable = yes [realms] EU.ORG.COM = { kdc = eudc05.eu.org.com:88 admin_server = eudc05.eu.org.com:749 default_domain = eu.org.com } [domain_realm] .eu.org.com = EU.ORG.COM eu.org.com = EU.ORG.COM [appdefaults] pam = { debug = true ticket_lifetime = 36000 renew_lifetime = 36000 forwardable = true krb4_convert = false } When I test kinit validuser and enter password then authentication is successful. klist returns: Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_600 Default principal: [email protected] Valid starting Expires Service principal 02/08/13 13:46:40 02/08/13 23:46:47 krbtgt/[email protected] renew until 02/09/13 13:46:40 Kerberos 4 ticket cache: /tmp/tkt600 klist: You have no tickets cached In application Apache configuration I added IfModule mod_auth_kerb.c> Location /winlogin> AuthType Kerberos AuthName "Kerberos Loginsss" KrbMethodNegotiate off KrbAuthoritative on KrbVerifyKDC off KrbAuthRealms EU.ORG.COM Krb5Keytab /home/crmdata/httpd/apache.keytab KrbSaveCredentials off Require valid-user </Location> </IfModule> I restarted apache Now some tests: When I try to access application from Win7, I got pop-up message box, with text: Warning: This server is requesting that your username and password be sent in an insecure manner (basic authentification without a secure connection) When I enter valid credentials then my application opens successfully, and all works fine. Questions: Is ok that for user pop-ups such windows? If I use NTLM authentication then there no such pop-up. I checked IE Internet Options and there 'Enable Integrated Windows Authentication' is checked. Why IE try to send username and password to application apache? If I correct to understand then Windows self must make authentication via Active Directory using Kerberos protocol. When I try to access application from Win7 and I enter incorrect credentials to pop-up message box Application say Authentication failed (this is OK) In apache error log I see: [error] [client 192.168.56.1] krb5_get_init_creds_password() failed: Client not found in Kerberos database But now I cannot get possibility to enter valid credentials, only when I restart IE I can get again pop-up box. What could be incorrect or missing in my Kerberos setup? I read in some blog post that probably something is needed to be done in Active Directory side. What exactly?

  • Forgot password to development database

    - by ninja08
I've created a database using terminal while following along with a tutorial. Although I had a lot of trouble getting the databases to install. Now after finally getting it to work I changed a few things, actually just the name of the database using the rake command to just "next". The password should be 'secret password'. How can I change the password or find out what it is or change it? It doesn't seem to be edited my databases.yml file with the password, especially since it still just says 'root' as username with now password in there.

  • Nginx + Passenger running a RoR app is returning 401 when 302 is expected

    I've got a RoR app running on Passenger on top of Nginx. I'm using devise for my authentication method and have a link that gets sent in an email to users that requires authentication to view. If a user clicks the link from Outlook, and IE is the default browser, IE makes an HTTP request using the following headers: GET http://www.company.com/custom_layouts/108 HTTP/1.1 Accept: */* Accept-Language: en-us User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; InfoPath.2; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.company.com Returning: HTTP/1.1 401 Unauthorized Content-Type: /; charset=utf-8 Transfer-Encoding: chunked Connection: keep-alive Status: 401 X-Powered-By: Phusion Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) 2.2.15 WWW-Authenticate: Basic realm="Application" Cache-Control: no-cache X-UA-Compatible: IE=Edge,chrome=1 Set-Cookie: _vxwer_session=[sessionstr]; path=/; HttpOnly X-Runtime: 0.011918 Server: nginx/0.7.67 + Phusion Passenger 2.2.15 (mod_rails/mod_rack) 31 You need to sign in or sign up before continuing. 0 When the exact same URL is typed into the address bar, it does this: GET http://www.company.com/custom_layouts/108 HTTP/1.1 Accept: image/jpeg, application/x-ms-application, image/gif, application/xaml+xml, image/pjpeg, application/x-ms-xbap, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, */* Accept-Language: en-US User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; InfoPath.2; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.company.com Returning: HTTP/1.1 302 Found Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8 Transfer-Encoding: chunked Connection: keep-alive Status: 302 X-Powered-By: Phusion Passenger (mod_rails/mod_rack) 2.2.15 Location: http://www.company.com/users/sign_in Cache-Control: no-cache X-UA-Compatible: IE=Edge,chrome=1 Set-Cookie: _xswer_session=[session_info_here]; path=/; HttpOnly X-Runtime: 0.010798 Server: nginx/0.7.67 + Phusion Passenger 2.2.15 (mod_rails/mod_rack) 6f <html><body>You are being <a href="http://www.company.com/users/sign_in">redirected</a>.</body></html> 0 I expect them to return the same thing regardless.

  • How to decide the optimal number of ruby thin/mongrel instances for a server, number of cores?

    - by Amala
We are trying to deploy mongrel instances on a machine. What is the optimal number of mongrel instances for a server? Since an instance can handle concurrent connections, I do not see any benefit in starting more than 1 per core. Any more than that and the threads will just fight for CPU. Our predecessors have assigned 10 instances for 4 cores, but I think it will just cause CPU contention. Any definitive answers / opinions? I have seen this question: How many mongrel instances? But it is really not specific enough.

  • Haproxy Slow Reload in DB Mode

    - by com
Recently I started using great tool for load balancing - Haproxy. There is only one disturbing thing that I cannot figure out how to deal with it. We use haproxy for load balancing mysql traffic. When there is a lot of traffic and many connection it takes ages for haproxy to reload (~ 30 min), with less traffic it doest reload within 1 min. I do reload with: service haproxy reload Of course if I need to do an urgent change in configuration I expect haproxy to do reload very fast. Killing haproxy instances waiting for disconnection causes to disconnection of msyql connections. It looks like that I made mistake in settings of haproxy or in settings of application. If you know how to solve this please help me. Thanks!

  • Where to start when setting up a gambling website [closed]

    - by molleman
I don't know if this is the correct place or this question by I couldn't find anywhere else. I am looking into building a gambling website, I have good HTML CSS and JavaScript skills but I do not know enough of the server side to actually build a backend for a gambling website. Firstly where would you start , what language , I work With Wordpress , so I understand php a little but not a lot . Would php be a good place to start . If so what framework would be able to scale if the number of users on the website increased . clearly I would like a backend where you could view 1. Users 2. Transactions 3. input games which you can bet on And so on.. Also users should be able to see all there associated information If anyone could help that would be great.

  • What happens when Phusion PassengerMaxPoolSize is reached?

    - by bmurtagh
The subject of my post pretty much sums up my question: What happens when PassengerMaxPoolSize is reached? For Example: PassengerMaxPoolSize is configured to 40 based off our system specs What happens if all 40 sessions are active (processing a request) and our load balancer passes another session to this particular web server? This would send a 41st session to be processed without an available Passenger process.

  • A Simple Approach For Presenting With Code Samples

    - by Jesse Taber
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/GruffCode/archive/2013/07/31/a-simple-approach-for-presenting-with-code-samples.aspxI’ve been getting ready for a presentation and have been struggling a bit with the best way to show and execute code samples. I don’t present often (hardly ever), but when I do I like the presentation to have a lot of succinct and executable code snippets to help illustrate the points that I’m making. Depending on what the presentation is about, I might just want to build an entire sample application that I would run during the presentation. In other cases, however, building a full-blown application might not really be the best way to present the code. The presentation I’m working on now is for an open source utility library for dealing with dates and times. I could have probably cooked up a sample app for accepting date and time input and then contrived ways in which it could put the library through its paces, but I had trouble coming up with one app that would illustrate all of the various features of the library that I wanted to highlight. I finally decided that what I really needed was an approach that met the following criteria: Simple: I didn’t want the user interface or overall architecture of a sample application to serve as a distraction from the demonstration of the syntax of the library that the presentation is about. I want to be able to present small bits of code that are focused on accomplishing a single task. Several of these examples will look similar, and that’s OK. I want each sample to “stand on its own” and not rely much on external classes or methods (other than the library that is being presented, of course). “Debuggable” (not really a word, I know): I want to be able to easily run the sample with the debugger attached in Visual Studio should I want to step through any bits of code and show what certain values might be at run time. As far as I know this rules out something like LinqPad, though using LinqPad to present code samples like this is actually a very interesting idea that I might explore another time. Flexible and Selectable: I’m going to have lots of code samples to show, and I want to be able to just package them all up into a single project or module and have an easy way to just run the sample that I want on-demand. Since I’m presenting on a .NET framework library, one of the simplest ways in which I could execute some code samples would be to just create a Console application and use Console.WriteLine to output the pertinent info at run time. This gives me a “no frills” harness from which to run my code samples, and I just hit ‘F5’ to run it with the debugger. This satisfies numbers 1 and 2 from my list of criteria above, but item 3 is a little harder. By default, just running a console application is going to execute the ‘main’ method, and then terminate the program after all code is executed. If I want to have several different code samples and run them one at a time, it would be cumbersome to keep swapping the code I want in and out of the ‘main’ method of the console application. What I really want is an easy way to keep the console app running throughout the whole presentation and just have it run the samples I want when I want. I could setup a simple Windows Forms or WPF desktop application with buttons for the different samples, but then I’m getting away from my first criteria of keeping things as simple as possible. Infinite Loops To The Rescue I found a way to have a simple console application satisfy all three of my requirements above, and it involves using an infinite loop and some Console.ReadLine calls that will give the user an opportunity to break out and exit the program. (All programs that need to run until they are closed explicitly (or crash!) likely use similar constructs behind the scenes. Create a new Windows Forms project, look in the ‘Program.cs’ that gets generated, and then check out the docs for the Application.Run method that it calls.). Here’s how the main method might look: 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: do 4: { 5: Console.Write("Enter command or 'exit' to quit: > "); 6: var command = Console.ReadLine(); 7: if ((command ?? string.Empty).Equals("exit", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) 8: { 9: Console.WriteLine("Quitting."); 10: break; 11: } 12: 13: } while (true); 14: } The idea here is the app prompts me for the command I want to run, or I can type in ‘exit’ to break out of the loop and let the application close. The only trick now is to create a set of commands that map to each of the code samples that I’m going to want to run. Each sample is already encapsulated in a single public method in a separate class, so I could just write a big switch statement or create a hashtable/dictionary that maps command text to an Action that will invoke the proper method, but why re-invent the wheel? CLAP For Your Own Presentation I’ve blogged about the CLAP library before, and it turns out that it’s a great fit for satisfying criteria #3 from my list above. CLAP lets you decorate methods in a class with an attribute and then easily invoke those methods from within a console application. CLAP was designed to take the arguments passed into the console app from the command line and parse them to determine which method to run and what arguments to pass to that method, but there’s no reason you can’t re-purpose it to accept command input from within the infinite loop defined above and invoke the corresponding method. Here’s how you might define a couple of different methods to contain two different code samples that you want to run during your presentation: 1: public static class CodeSamples 2: { 3: [Verb(Aliases="one")] 4: public static void SampleOne() 5: { 6: Console.WriteLine("This is sample 1"); 7: } 8:   9: [Verb(Aliases="two")] 10: public static void SampleTwo() 11: { 12: Console.WriteLine("This is sample 2"); 13: } 14: } A couple of things to note about the sample above: I’m using static methods. You don’t actually need to use static methods with CLAP, but the syntax ends up being a bit simpler and static methods happen to lend themselves well to the “one self-contained method per code sample” approach that I want to use. The methods are decorated with a ‘Verb’ attribute. This tells CLAP that they are eligible targets for commands. The “Aliases” argument lets me give them short and easy-to-remember aliases that can be used to invoke them. By default, CLAP just uses the full method name as the command name, but with aliases you can simply the usage a bit. I’m not using any parameters. CLAP’s main feature is its ability to parse out arguments from a command line invocation of a console application and automatically pass them in as parameters to the target methods. My code samples don’t need parameters ,and honestly having them would complicate giving the presentation, so this is a good thing. You could use this same approach to invoke methods with parameters, but you’d have a couple of things to figure out. When you invoke a .NET application from the command line, Windows will parse the arguments and pass them in as a string array (called ‘args’ in the boilerplate console project Program.cs). The parsing that gets done here is smart enough to deal with things like treating strings in double quotes as one argument, and you’d have to re-create that within your infinite loop if you wanted to use parameters. I plan on either submitting a pull request to CLAP to add this capability or maybe just making a small utility class/extension method to do it and posting that here in the future. So I now have a simple class with static methods to contain my code samples, and an infinite loop in my ‘main’ method that can accept text commands. Wiring this all up together is pretty easy: 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: do 4: { 5: try 6: { 7: Console.Write("Enter command or 'exit' to quit: > "); 8: var command = Console.ReadLine(); 9: if ((command ?? string.Empty).Equals("exit", StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)) 10: { 11: Console.WriteLine("Quitting."); 12: break; 13: } 14:   15: Parser.Run<CodeSamples>(new[] { command }); 16: Console.WriteLine("---------------------------------------------------------"); 17: } 18: catch (Exception ex) 19: { 20: Console.Error.WriteLine("Error: " + ex.Message); 21: } 22:   23: } while (true); 24: } Note that I’m now passing the ‘CodeSamples’ class into the CLAP ‘Parser.Run’ as a type argument. This tells CLAP to inspect that class for methods that might be able to handle the commands passed in. I’m also throwing in a little “----“ style line separator and some basic error handling (because I happen to know that some of the samples are going to throw exceptions for demonstration purposes) and I’m good to go. Now during my presentation I can just have the console application running the whole time with the debugger attached and just type in the alias of the code sample method that I want to run when I want to run it.

  • No Thank You &ndash; Yours Truly &ndash; F#

    - by MarkPearl
I am plodding along with my F# book. I have reached the part where I know enough about the syntax of the language to understand something if I read it – but not enough about the language to be productive and write something useful. A bit of a frustrating place to be. Needless to say when you are in this state of mind – you end up paging mindlessly through chapters of my F# book with no real incentive to learn anything until you hit “Exceptions”. Raising an exception explicitly So lets look at raising an exception explicitly – in C# we would throw the exception, F# is a lot more polite instead of throwing the exception it raises it, … (raise (System.InvalidOperationException("no thank you"))) quite simple… Catching an Exception So I would expect to be able to catch an exception as well – lets look at some C# code first… try { Console.WriteLine("Raise Exception"); throw new InvalidOperationException("no thank you"); } catch { Console.WriteLine("Catch Exception and Carry on.."); } Console.WriteLine("Carry on..."); Console.ReadLine();   The F# equivalent would go as follows… open System; try Console.WriteLine("Raise Exception") raise (System.InvalidOperationException("no thank you")) with | _ -> Console.WriteLine("Catch Exception and Carry on..") Console.WriteLine("Carry on...") Console.ReadLine();   In F# there is a “try, with” and a “try finally” Finally… In F# there is a finally block however the “with” and “finally” can’t be combined. open System; try Console.WriteLine("Raise Exception") raise (System.InvalidOperationException("no thank you")) finally Console.WriteLine("Finally carry on...") Console.ReadLine()

Anything I can missing here?

I'm seeking a library, technique or advice on how to read an EAN-13 barcode from an image (including ISBN,and ISSN encodings). The image would come from a mobile phone or webcam, so resolution may be quite poor and not well aligned. I'm specifically interested in something that could be used from ruby on rails, but answers for other languages are welcome. Open Source solutions preferred. Leading solutions so far: ZBar (previously known as Zebra - h/t @bgbg, @Natim) and ZXing (h/t @codr)

  • heroku mongohq and mongoid Mongo::ConnectionFailure

I have added the mongoHQ addon for mongodb at heroku. It crashes with something like this. connect_to_master': failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure) The descriptions online (heroku mongohq) are more directed towards mongomapper, as I see it. I'm running ruby 1.9.1 and rails 3-beta with mongoid. My feeling says that there's something with ENV['MONGOHQ_URL'], which it says the MongoHQ addon sets, but I haven't set MONGOHQ_URL anywhere in my app. I guess the problem is in my mongoid.yml ? defaults: &defaults host: localhost development: <<: *defaults database: aliado_development test: <<: *defaults database: aliado_test # set these environment variables on your prod server production: <<: *defaults host: <%= ENV['MONGOID_HOST'] %> port: <%= ENV['MONGOID_PORT'] %> username: <%= ENV['MONGOID_USERNAME'] %> password: <%= ENV['MONGOID_PASSWORD'] %> database: <%= ENV['MONGOID_DATABASE'] %> It works fine locally, but fails at heroku, more stack trace: ==> crashlog.log <== Cannot write to outdated .bundle/environment.rb to update it /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/rack-1.1.0/lib/rack.rb:14: warning: already initialized constant VERSION /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongo-0.20.1/lib/mongo/connection.rb:435:in `connect_to_master': failed to connect to any given host:port (Mongo::ConnectionFailure) from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongo-0.20.1/lib/mongo/connection.rb:112:in `initialize' from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongoid-2.0.0.beta4 /lib/mongoid/railtie.rb:32:in `new' from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongoid-2.0.0.beta4/lib/mongoid/railtie.rb:32:in `block (2 levels) in <class:Railtie>' from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongoid-2.0.0.beta4/lib/mongoid.rb:110:in `configure' from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/mongoid-2.0.0.beta4/lib/mongoid/railtie.rb:21:in `block in <class:Railtie>' from /disk1/home/slugs/176479_b14df52_b875/mnt/.bundle/gems/gems/railties-3.0.0.beta3/lib/rails/initializable.rb:25:in `instance_exec' ..... • Cucumber error under bundler

    - by Senthil
    I've confirmed cucumber tests work fine without bundler, but with bundler it breaks. This is the error I get: You have a nil object when you didn't expect it! You might have expected an instance of Array. The error occurred while evaluating nil.each (NoMethodError) /home/senthil/rails/othersprograms/nmicho-teambox/vendor/plugins/cucumber/lib/cucumber/formatter/console.rb:148:in `record_tag_occurrences' /home/senthil/rails/othersprograms/nmicho-teambox/vendor/plugins/cucumber/lib/cucumber/formatter/pretty.rb:71:in `before_feature_element' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:190:in `__send__' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:190:in `send_to_all' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:188:in `each' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:188:in `send_to_all' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:179:in `broadcast' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:50:in `visit_feature_element' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/feature.rb:26:in `accept' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/feature.rb:25:in `each' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/feature.rb:25:in `accept' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:20:in `visit_feature' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:180:in `broadcast' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:19:in `visit_feature' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/features.rb:29:in `accept' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/features.rb:17:in `each' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/features.rb:17:in `each' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/features.rb:28:in `accept' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:14:in `visit_features' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:180:in `broadcast' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/ast/tree_walker.rb:13:in `visit_features' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/cli/main.rb:61:in `execute!' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/../lib/cucumber/cli/main.rb:20:in `execute' /var/lib/gems/1.8/gems/cucumber-0.6.1/bin/cucumber:8 /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/cucumber:19:in `load' /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin/cucumber:19 I've searched all over Google and nothing. Oh btw the above tests is when I was trying to run cucumber tests in Teambox app. I've downloaded it fresh and it still breaks. But if I use their old versions where they didn't not have bundler installed, it works fine. Can anyone help? Thanks

  • Log4r : logger inheritance, yaml configuration, alternatives ?

    - by devlearn
Hello, I'm pretty new to ruby environments and I was looking for a nice logging framework to use it my ruby and rails applications. In my previous experiences I have successfully used log4j and log4p (the perl port) and was expecting the same level of usability (and maturity) with log4r. However I must say that there are a number of things that are not clear at all in the log4r framework. 1 Logger Inheritance The logger inheritance does not seem to be managed at all ! If I declare a logger named 'myapp' and then try to get a logger name 'myapp::engine', the lookup will end with a NameError. I would expect that the framework returns the root logger according to the naming scheme and to use the 'myapp' logger. Q1 : Of course I can work around this and manage the names by myself with a lookup method, however is there a cleaner way to do this without any extra coding ? 2 YAML configuration Second thing that confuses me is the yaml configuration. On the log4r site there are literally no information about this system, the doc links forward to missing pages, so all the info I can find about is contained in the examples directory of the gem. I was pretty confused with the fact that the yaml configuration must contain the pre_config section, and that I need to define my own levels. If I remove the pre_config secion, or replace all the “custom” levels by the standard ones ( debug, info, warn, fatal ) , the example will throw the following error : log4r/yamlconfigurator.rb:68:in `decode_yaml': Log level must be in 0..7 (ArgumentError) So there seems to be no way of using a simple file where we only declare the loggers and appenders for the framework. Q2 : I realy think that I missed something and that must be a way of providing a simple yaml conf file. Do you have any examples of such an usage ? 3 Variables substitution in XML file Q3 : The Yaml configuration system seems to provide such a feature however I was unable to find a similar feature with XML files. Any ideas ? 4 Alternatives ? I must say that I'm very disappointed by the feature level and the maturity of log4r compared to the log4j and other log4j ports. I run into this framework with a solid background of logging APIs in other languages and find myself working around in all kinds just to make 'basic things' running in a “real world application”. By that I mean a complex application composed of several gems, console/scripting apps, and a rails web front end where the configuration must be mutualized and where we make intensive usage of namespaces and inheritance. I've run several searches in order to find something more suitable or mature, but did not find anything similar. Q4 : Do you guys know any (serious) alternatives to log4r framework that could be used in a enterprise class app ? Thanks reading all of this ! I'd really appreciate any pointers, Kind Regards,

  • Ruby libraries for parsing .doc files?

    - by Platinum Azure
Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good libraries for parsing .doc files (and similar formats, like .odt) to extract text, yet also keep formatting information where possible for display on a website. Capability of doing similarly for PDFs would be a bonus, but I'm not looking as much for that. This is for a Rails project, if that helps at all. Thanks in advance!
