  • Repeated installation of malicious software to do outbound DDOS attack [duplicate]

    This question already has an answer here: How do I deal with a compromised server? 12 answers We have a Ubuntu Vitual Private Server hosted by a Canadian company. Out VPS was affected to do "outbound DDOS attack" as reported by server security team. There are 4 files in /boot looks like iptable, please note that the capital letter "I","L". VPS:/boot# ls -lha total 1.8M drwx------ 2 root root 4.0K Jun 3 09:25 . drwxr-xr-x 22 root root 4.0K Jun 3 09:25 .. -r----x--x 1 root root 1.1M Jun 3 09:25 .IptabLes -r----x--x 1 root root 706K Jun 3 09:23 .IptabLex -r----x--x 1 root root 33 Jun 3 09:25 IptabLes -r----x--x 1 root root 33 Jun 3 09:23 IptabLex We deleted them. But after a few hours, they appeared again and the attack resumed. We deleted them again. They resurfaced again. So on and so forth. So finally we have to disable our VPS. Please let us know how can we find the malicious script somewhere in the VPS, which can automatically install such attcking software? Thanks.

  • Ensuring quality of your software and code

    When I usually write code I follow some guidelines to ensure that my code has a certain standard and I as any other developer try to ensure that my code and software is of quality. Try to focus on the programming and not the understanding of the domain or any other pre-programming steps. These are the following steps I live by: Writing unit tests Make it fail ( no code ) Make it Work ( working code ) Analysing abstraction Extracting methods Exteract interfaces Refactoring In addition to the above which is a part of refactoring, I also try to refactor the code with good tools such as ReSharper, CodeRush or others. The question; What is the next step? Commenting the code is trivial and shouldn't even have to be mentioned, but updated comments and xml-comments where it's needed / everywhere is something that I try to have. But all the above helps he ensure that other developers might understand my code, that the code has some sort of quality and follows naming standards. It does however not ensure any product quality. I am looking for tools for post-development quality ensurance, such as profilers and how one would use these tools to increase product quality.

    New website Nice, isn't it? Cleaner, simpler, better looking and more modern. If you have any suggestions for further improvements I'd be glad to hear them. Simpler licensing With SSMS tools Pack 2.7 the licensing is finally where it should be. It is now based on the activate/deactivate model. This way you can move a license from machine to machine with simple deactivation on one and reactivation on another machine. Much better, no? Because of very good feedback I have added an option for 6 machines and lowered the 4 machines option to 3 machines. This should make it much simpler for you to choose the right option for yourself. Improved features Version 2.5.3 was already extremely stable and 2.7 continues with that tradition. Because of that I could fully focus on features and why 3.0 will rock even more that 2.7! ;) In version 2.7 I have addressed quite a few improvements you were requesting for a while now. SQL History This is probably the biggest time saver out there, therefore it's only fair it gets a few important updates. If you have an existing .sql file opened, the Window Content History now saves your code to that existing file and also makes a backup in the SQL History log default location. Search is still done through the SQL History log but the Tab Sessions Restore opens your existing .sql file. This way you don't have to remember to save your existing files by yourself anymore. A bug when you couldn't search properly if you copied the log files to a new location was fixed. Unfortunately this removed the option to filter a search with the time component. The smallest search interval is now one day. The SSMS Tools Pack now remembers the visibility of the Current Window History window when you exit SSMS. SQL Snippets You can now set the position of the cursor in your snippets by placing {C} somewhere in your snippet. It's a small improvement but can be a huge time saver since you don't have to move through the snippet to the desired location anymore. Run script on multiple databases Database choices can now be saved with a name and then loaded again next time. You can also choose to run the script in a new window for each chosen database. Search through grid results You can now go previous/next search result with the Prev/Next control inside the search window. This is extremely useful if you have a large resultset. IT saves you the scrolling. CRUD generator Four new variables have been added: |CurrentDate| writes current date in format yyyy-MM-dd to your script |CurrentTime| writes current time in 24h format HH:mm:ss to your script |CurrentWinUser| writes current Windows logged on user to your script |CurrentSqlUser| writes current SQL logged on login to your script This was actually quite a requested feature so if you have any other ideas for extra variables, do let me know.     We are currently in the process of solidifying a database change management process. We run MySql 5 running on RedHat 5. I have selected LiquiBase as the tool because it's open source and allows us to expand its functionality later if needed. It also seems to be one of the few free projects that are still active. Has anyone here had any experience using LiquiBase or other Db versioning tools? Company Background: We are an SaaS company providing a 7/24 hosted application. There are dozens of instances running different versions of the same database and we need a way to manage the deploy process as it's starting to get out of control. The databases have hundreds of tables and we typically do releases once every 3 months.

  • IE6 Hacks: Getting jQuery tools expose to work properly on my site

    Hi, I am trying to get the jQuery tools 'expose' function to work properly in IE6. The page is http://204.51.246.10:12123/ You will need IE6 to reproduce the bug (obviously :)). If you click 'Sign In' on the top-right corner (below the 'Join Today!' button), you will notice that the sign in panel (fieldset#login-controls) is getting covered by the background of its parent element (.signinPanel), which is very weird. It is not on the top of z-index, and I can't figure out why. Please note that in order to get fieldset#login-controls positioned correctly, I have applied the following hack for IE6: $("#header, #header div, #header table, #header td, #header tr").css("position", "static"); $("fieldset#login-controls *").css("position", "static"); This might be the reason for the above. I am pretty lost at this point, as I can't figure what's going on - any advise would be appreciated. Cheers, Wild Thing

I'm currently using lambdaprobe on Tomcat 5.5.x, but it seems that is no more developed (or not? the site lambdaprobe.org is always down for me...). Has someone good experiences to share? In lambdaprobe there are some info available only if tomcat is instrumented with JMX. Well, JMX is something of strange and mysterious for me. Is a good solution in a production server? It's worth to spend my (little) time to learn it?

Some assumptions: • code control version ok - git (de facto tool) • test framework ok - whatever (rspec is my choice) • code coverage and analysis ok - whatever (metric-fu, for example) • server stack ok - (Passenger for example) • issue tracker (RedMine) • etc, ...     Hey guys, I'm pretty new to Unit Testing so bare with me. I realize that best best practice is not to auto generate unit tests, however I'd like to use Code Generation to set-up the basic skeleton of the tests. Now, I know Visual Studio 2008 already has the built in "create tests", however, it just creates a flat list of all the classes it's going to test... and it's not for NUnit right? Ideally, I'd like the code generation to follow the folder AND namespace structure of the assembly its generating tests for. Can you guys recommend any good tools which generate NUnit unit tests for .NET assemblies in Visual Studio 2008? cheers!

  • How to detect code duplication during development ?

    We have a fairly large code base, 400K LOC of C++, and code duplication is something of a problem. Are there any tools which can effectively detect duplicated blocks of code? Ideally this would be something that developers could use during development rather than just run occasionally to see where the problems are. It would also be nice if we could integrate such a tool with CruiseControl to give a report after each check in. I had a look at Duploc some time ago, it showed a nice graph but requires a smalltalk environment to use it, which makes running it automatically rather difficult. Free tools would be nice, but if there are some good commercial tools I would also be interested.

  • Recommended Model Based Testing Tools

    Does anyone have any suggestions on what Model Based Testing Tools to use? Is Spec Explorer/SPEC# worth it's weight in tester training? What I have traditionally done is create a Visio Model where I call out the states and associated variables, outputs and expected results from each state. Then in a completely disconnected way, I data drive my test scripts with those variables based on that model. But, they are not connected. I want a way to create a model, associate the variables in a business friendly way, that will then build the data parameters for the scripts. I can't be the first person to need this. Is there a tool out there that will do basically that? Short of developing it myself.

    I may be approaching this problem from the wrong angle but what I'm thinking of is some kind of performance monitor tool for SQl server that works in a similar way to code performance tools, e.g. I;d like to see an output of how many times each stored procedure was called, average executuion time and possibly various resource usage stats such as cache/index utilisation, resultign disk access and table scans, etc. As far as I can tell the performance monitor that comes with SQL Server just logs the various calls but doesn't report he variosu stats I'm looking for. Potentially I just need a tool to analyze the log output?

    Hi there, How can I make my static-file root directories relative to my application root folder (instead of a hard-coded path)? In accordance with CP instructions (http://www.cherrypy.org/wiki/StaticContent) I have tried the following in my configuration file: tree.cpapp = cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root()) tools.staticdir.root = cpapp.current_dir but when I run cherrpy.quickstart(rootclass, script_name='/', config=config_file) I get the following error builtins.ValueError: ("Config error in section: 'global', option: 'tree.cpapp', value: 'cherrypy.Application(cpapp.Root())'. Config values must be valid Python.", 'TypeError', ("unrepr could not resolve the name 'cpapp'",)) I know I can do configuration from within the main.py file just before quickstart is called (eg. using os.path.abspath(os.path.dirname(file))), but I prefer using the idea of a separate configuration file if possible. Any help would be appreciated (in case it is relevant, I am using CP 3.2 with Python 3.1) TIA Alan

  • What is the point in using a "real" database modeling tool?

    We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app). Some have suggested we use Visio to do all the diagramming and to generate the DDL, but others have suggested we use a dedicated database design tool, rather than a diagramming tool that is able to export DDL. Is there any benefit to using "real" DB design tools, such as ModelRight, over general tools like Visio? If so, what are those specific benefits? Edit: In a nutshell, what can real/dedicated tools do that something like Visio can't, and how much do these capabilities matter (from a best-practices standpoint, for example)

On top of that my boos is really looking into a tool called CodeOnTime http://codeontime.com/default.aspx because he likes their good UI support. I am asking here because I really want an unbiased opinion. I am not sure if LLBGen can also generate the UI.     Hi, In my company we want to use Scrum lifecycle, we are using Team System 2010. Team System is great to manage projects developpment and Scrum lifecycle. However we are looking for a solution in order to take care of customers requirements. A tool which give the ability to customer to send us their requests so we can plan it for next sprint.     By "code snippet execution", I mean the ability to write a few lines of code, run and test it without having to fire up an IDE and create a dummy project. It's incredibly useful for helping people with a small code sample without creating a project, compiling everything cleanly, sending them the code snippet and deleting the project. I'm not asking about the best code snippets or a snippet editor or where to store snippets! For C#, I use Snippet Compiler. For Java, I use Eclipse Scrapbook. For LINQ, I use LINQPad. Any suggestions for other (better?) tools? e.g. is there one for Java that doesn't involve firing up Eclipse? What about C?

    I am new to GAE, I follow the instructions on http://code.google.com/eclipse/docs/install-eclipse-3.7.html. I got the installation and registration done pretty fast. But when I tried to build the helloWorld project in Eclipse, before I can do anything, Eclipse gives me an error says "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/google/appengine/tools/enhancer/Enhance" and it is very weird. Because when you expand the app engine sdk, you can easily find the Enhance class under related jar file. I also tried Enhance e = null; and it is working. It seems that my eclipse just cannot find it. I don't know why it is not working, I am using JDK1.6, I reinstall my eclipse and the google plugins, I even disabled my firewall. Please help!!!

It needs to be translated to languages other than English in the future, and ideally the translators shouldn't need to know HTML/JS/C++ to provide the translation. The server side of the web application is written in C++ and the majority of the localised text is in the HTML files. My question is: What approaches are there to translating web applications? - Are there any existing tools that would enable a translator who doesn't understand HTML to translate a site? Should I write an application that extracts the localised text from a html file and can re-substitute translated text? Do you just provide the html file to your translators to be localised? I'm aware the question isn't strictly programming related but the solution may involve programming and it may require some software engineering.

    My primary IDE is Visual Studio 2005 and I have a large C/C++ project. I'm interested in what thread analysis tools are recommended. By that I mean, I want a tool, static or dynamic, to help find race conditions, deadlocks, and the like. So far I've casually researched the following: 1. Intel Thread Checker: I don't believe that it ties into VS 2005? 2. Valgrind/Helgrind: free. 3. Coverity: this is a costly tool if i understand correctly.     Hi I'm due to take up a project which is into data mining. Before I jump in I wanted to probe around for different data mining tools (preferably open source) which allows web based reporting. In my scenario the all the data would be provided to me, so I'm not supposed to crawl for it. In n nutshell, am looking for a tool which does - Data Analysis, Web based Reporting, provides some kind of a dashboard and mining features. I have worked on the Microsoft Analysis Services and BOXI and off late I have been looking at Pentaho, which seems to be a good option.     Best practices or tools for installing a SQL Server database I have a SQL Server database designed with the SQL Server GUI database editor/Visual Studio. What is the best way to "install" that database on other systems. Said another way how should I ship this thing? I know I can save the scripts and set the primary/foreign keys with T-SQL but I suspect their is something better. I guess you could have people restore from backup but that does not seem very professional. What other choices are there and what are the pluses and minuses?
