  I have been reinstalling Windows 7 over and over again on an ASUS P5lD2 2Gb Ram 3Ghz P4 because it ultimately loses the contents of "Turn Windows Features On or Off" after I install software like Autocad 2010 & Microsoft Office 2007. I get install errors like 1935 and 1704 on the way tried different fixes at different times (install software in different order to try and isolate problem too). Ultimately I force the software to install after much buggering and end up losing the contents of "TWFOOO" Should I be installing some older items like .net framework 1.1, 2.0 and Visual Studio items like vcredist_x86.exe? getting a bit lost because of compounded problems...

• SQL Clustering on Hyper V - is a cluster within a cluster a benefit.

  This is a re-hash of a question I asked a while back - after a consultant has come in firing ideas in to other teams in the department the whole issue has been raised again hence I'm looking for more detailed answers. We're intending to set-up a multi-instance SQL Cluster across a number of physical blades which will run a variety of different systems across each SQL instance. In general use there will be one virtual SQL instance running on each VM host. Again, in general operation each VM host will run on a dedicated underlying blade. The set-up should give us lots of flexibility for maintenance of any individual VM or underlying blade with all the SQL instances able to fail over as required. My original plan had been to do the following: Install 2008 R2 on each blade Add Hyper V to each blade Install a 2008 R2 VM to each blade Within the VMs - create a failover cluster and then install SQL Server clustering. The consultant has suggested that we instead do the following: Install 2008 R2 on each blade Add Hyper V to each blade Install a 2008 R2 VM to each blade Create a cluster on the HOST machines which will host all the VMs. Within the VMs - create a failover cluster and then install SQL Server clustering. The big difference is the addition of step 4 whereby we cluster all of the guest VMs as well. The argument is that it improves maintenance further since we have no ties at all between the SQL cluster and physical hardware. We can in theory live migrate the guest VMs around the hosts without affecting the SQL cluster at all so we for routine maintenance physical blades we move the SQL cluster around without interruption and without needing to failover. It sounds like a nice idea but I've not come across anything on the internet where people say they've done this and it works OK. Can I actually do the live migrations of the guests without the SQL Cluster hosted within them getting upset? Does anyone have any experience of this set up, good or bad? Are there some pros and cons that I've not considered? I appreciate that mirroring is also a valuable option to consider - in this case we're favouring clustering since it will do the whole of each instance and we have a good number of databases. Some DBs are for lumbering 3rd party systems that may not even work kindly with mirroring (and my understanding of clustering is that fail overs are completely transparent to the clients). Thanks.

I get the following error: checking for Qt... configure: error: Qt (>= Qt 3.0.2) (headers and libraries) not found. Please check your installation! So I install the following package thinking this would solve the problem. sudo apt-get install libqt4-dev I was thinking that the libqt4-dev would install the headers and libraries.   I am a newcomer to linux and have had lots of problems in installing java on my newly installed Ubuntu 11.10. I use a statistical programming environment called R and many of the packages there require java (the sun variety, I am told). I tried the following : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts (after this, I wanted to continue with (but never got that far) : sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk After this, a window appeared with the heading, "Configuring jre", or something like that. Below was a long list of legal text about accepting Sun's terms. I did not know how to close this window (no obvious option like pressing return worked). After a long time, when nothing seemed to happen, I finally closed the window. After that, I could not open synaptic. I got the error message : dpkg was interrupted. You must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' I did this. But it does not help. I have java as a "broken" program. When I try to remove the program from synaptic, I get a message that I must reinstall it again.I do not know what I should do. I want to install jdk6. And also remove the open jdk which is still persistently present in my system. I tried the clean and purge command shown below. Next, I tried to remove the sun-java6-jre from synaptic. I get the following message :E: sun-java6-jre: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. When I tried to follow the procedure suggested in the related question (from the link suggested below), I get the following message on trying to install again :Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade.The following packages have unresolvable dependancies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. sun-java6-bin : Depends: sun-java6-jre but it is not going to be installed

• Why does Ubuntu 13.10 not detect my Win7 partition?

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 7 on my DELL INSPIRON 14z 5423 laptop and I'm new to all of this. I'm using the Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit ISO burned onto a CD. The first time I tried to install it, Ubuntu said it did not detect any other OS, which meant I only had 4 options: Erase disk and install Ubuntu (I don't want to do this) Encrypt new Ubuntu. Use LVM. Something else. If I choose the Something else option, it brings me to the partition menu and says that I have 1 disk with free space of (500Gb), but that's not true because I have Windows 7. I restarted the laptop several times and booted the CD again and I got exactly the same as I did previously. How do fix this problem and install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7? • Installing Linux on a Windows 8.1 laptop

  I would like to clean install a linux distribution as Ubuntu etc. My laptop that runs Windows 8.1. I have two options in mind. Clean install or dual boot. My technical question is: my laptop have a 8GB SSD drive, which it uses to boot Windows with and a 500GB for storage. I wonder what that 8GB SSD stores? It can't store the whole Windows install as that would be much more than 8GB. Also if I would do a clean install of Ubuntu could I use the 8GB SSD to have Ubuntu boot up quicker. How would I install it. Option two, if I would like to dual boot, how would I proceed having the SSD to boot both systems? I also wish to ask about the Legacy and UEFI differences. Windows runs with UEFI. So when I'm installing Linux, should I run Legacy, and if I dual boot, what option to I choose?

• SCSI driver installation trouble

  I tried to install the driver of Adaptec 39320A-Ultra 320 SCSI card in Win2003 Server R2 SP2 in a DELL PowerEdge 2950 Server. I selected the driver from the list of drivers present in windows. But it says that the device could not be started(Code 10). I tried to put the card in a system that already had the driver installed. It worked fine. So there is no problem with the hardware. I even tried downloading the driver from the manufacturer website. When I try to select install from path and install that driver, it tell no matching driver found. When I install the default driver from windows, it shows the card in SCSI group of device manager, but with an ! symbol. Also the device ID in driver details was different from that of the one present in other system where it insalled fine. Any suggessions to solve it?

However, the install for memcached complains that the libevent library isn't in /usr/lib64 and that it isn't 64bit. I get message like this: Buildfile: build.xml does not exist! Build failed then download java server from https://github.com/WillowIT/Pentaho-...rver/build.xml and then copied to Ubuntu share folder and then on command form, i goto extracted path which is share folder i mentioned and executed command "ant war " and i got error message : BUILD FAILED /share/java_server/build.xml:18: problem: failed to create task or type antlibrg:apacge.ivy.ant:retrieve cause: The name is undefined. Action:Check the spelling. Action:Check that any custom taks/types have been declared Action:Check that any /declarations have taken place. No types or taks have been defined in this namespace yet This appears to be an antlib declaration. • Why can't tuxboot and ubuntu play well together?

  I'm trying to get clonezilla to run off of a usb stick, and it seems that the right way to do that is via tuxboot. Tuxboot is not compilable on ubuntu. I used git to get it from the repository, and then when I run the 'install' script (because building it is apparently not allowed, since the build script just tries to install windows things). Qmake-linux wants my qmake executable to be in the same directory as the stuff I pulled down, and let's just say that if there's a way to do this easily, I ain't seein' it. So then I download the linux file, the most recent of which is tuxboot-linux-25. Try to run it, get a failure that libpng12.so.0 isn't found. OK, then I go to install that via the instructions I found on the web but firefox seems to have already deleted from my history (yay!) Then I add the /usr/local/lib directory to ldconfig via emacs (had to install that too, of course): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=369848 I still get the errors that libpng12.so.0 cannot be opened because 'No such file or directory'. ldconfig -p | grep libpng shows that the library is there, but it still doesn't seem to be findable. What to do next? (for the record, doing this in windows is painless-- download, click, and it's done. But I'm trying to be all linuxy and get away from Windows for this...)

• Error when installing ubuntu-zfs

  I'm switching from FreeNAS to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. After a vanilla install of Ubuntu has been completed I run the following commands in the order shown to install ZFS: apt-get install python-software-properties add-apt-repository ppa:zfs-native/stable apt-get -y -q update && apt-get -y -q upgrade apt-get install ubuntu-zfs When the last command is run ZFS is installed and seems to be working correctly... mostly (more on that later). However, when the last command is run I get this error (full log here): configure: error: *** Please make sure the kmod spl devel <kernel> package for your *** distribution is installed then try again. If that fails you *** can specify the location of the spl objects with the *** '--with-spl-obj=PATH' option. What is this error and how do I fix it? Now I said mostly earlier because my pool's don't auto mount when the server restarts the way they should. All my reading (mostly from this page) indicates that mountall should just take care of the mounting. I have followed the instructions on that page and I cannot get mountall to work correctly. My pools will only auto mount on restart if I edit /etc/fstab or change the ZFS_MOUNT and ZFS_UNMOUNT options in /etc/default/zfs.

  I managed to thoroughly confuse myself with php configuration in my apache install (on a mac). I am trying to get xdebug to work in eclipse and noticed that there are two different installs of php on my machine. The one (v5.4.5) in the apache install directory /opt/local/apache2/ and another one (v5.3) in the default system directory /usr/bin. My questions are: The php in the apache install directory was installed by me from source. But it does not have a php.ini file, instead it has PEAR.conf and other bunch of conf files. What are they and did I install something wrong? Can I compile apache with php support and have it use the php from the system directory right? How do I know which php its using? httpd -M is the only command i can see. Can I force apache to use a different php?

• Ubuntu karmic 9.10 Live image on USB - not working.

  This is my configuration 4GB pendrive, HP ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386 image file for live USB install pendrivelinux (u910p) and ubetbootin (unetbootin.sourceforge.net) machine T61 Earlier I have installed ubuntu live image using above two mentioned utilities, numerous times. But, on a 2gb kingston flash-drive. Today, i am trying to install the live-image on 4gb HP flash-drive. Both the utilities install, i can see the files in the drive, even the wubi-installer is working, it say press "reboot" to boot in live-ubuntu. But, when i press "reboot" it does not reboot my win7. Now, when i reboot, select boot-usb in bios, it say "no boot record". I am making my usb bootable, using the utility, even then nothing is working out. Did this a few times. Is 4GB usb a prob, does anyone knows how to partition my usb in 2-2gb and install it on one partition, and then use the live image. Is it possible.

• YUM and RPM crash due to the liblua-5.1 library being missing

  I've been playing around with a LiveUsb install of basic Fedora with persistence. I attempted to install moonscript, which requires Lua and LuaRocks. After installing Lua and discovering there were flaws in the install which prevented LuaRocks from working, I used rpm to force Lua off so I could use yum to re-install it. The result was an error of this sort being yielded by both rpm and yum: There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: liblua-5.1.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I've concluded from this that my Lua version installed a library which both yum and rpm are now connected to.
