  • Visual Studio Setup - why is solution explorer on the right?

    Every time I install VS (whichever version going back years) it installs with the Solution Explorer on the right. Now as most UIs have the navigation in a left hand column (and at the top of the viewport) and the content to the right of this navigation this always seems wrong to me. So I drag the solution explorer to the left of the screen and dock it there. But I've never seen another developer do this. Considering how most programmers usually like to customize their environment, adding their favourite text editor, browser, plug-ins, greasemonkey scripts etc why do Visual Studio developers never seem to make this simple UI change? Does anyone else do this or am I just screaming in the dark?

  • Visual Studio Express 2012 - Moving items to tab control loses actions

    VS 2012 Express on Windows 7 Professional, this was pre SP1 install. I have a windows form that I had several elements (Listboxes, buttons, text and labels), with some actions associated with changing indices on the list boxes and of course the button actions. I decided I wanted to add a tab control to enable a second tab with a different feature set, so I copied/cut/pasted all of the original items to a tab control that I added. When I did this, all of the elements lost their click action in the events window. I had to go and re-associate all of them. Is this a normal behavior/known issue, or is there some method to move controls that I am not aware of?

  • Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

    I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. XAML: MediaElement Source="Bear.wmv" Build Action = Content, Copy to output directory = Copy always In C# 2008 this file is shown in the window. In C# 2010 Express file is not shown. Output directory contains this file. How can this be fixed?

  • sql server 2005 delphi 2010 dbexpress connection

    Trying to connect to sql server 2005 with delphi 2010 gives me the following error after configuring the data explorer: 'Borland.data.TDBXError: DBX Error: Driver could not be properly initialized. Client library may be missing, not installed properly, or wrong version' I know there is a work around by installing the sql server 2008 management studio. But this is not a good solution if all pc's need to have this prerequirement. Anybody know a better solution/fix. Delphi 6 does not have this problem.

    Hi, I am trying to automate the creation of team projects using a command built into VS 2010 called File.BatchNewTeamProject using a project settings file as an argument, and executing this as a process silently in the background from my c# win app. I am aware of a requirement that Team Explorer has to be open and connected to TFS before this command can run, however, when I start a process with devenv.exe, a fresh instance of visual studio pops up with Team Explorer not connected by default. How can I solve this problem?

    I have a lot of legacy Delphi 5 & 6 Code. We want to test this code using the new Microsoft Test Manager (part of VS2010) To effectively track your testing using this tool you need to use build numbers. To get Delphi 5 or 6 building in TFS Build 2010 is a huge task. One that I am not sure I want to take on. Is there a way I can just insert my build numbers in to tfs?
