• Silverlight ProgressBar issues with Binding

  The ProgressBar pretty much does what it says on the tin, displays progress, in a bar form (well, by default anyhow). It’s pretty simple to use: <ProgressBar Minimum="0" Maximum="100" Value="50"/> Gives you a progress bar with 50% of it filled: Easy! But of course, we’re wanting to use binding to change the value, again, pretty easy, have a ViewModel with a ‘Value’ in it, and bind: <ProgressBar Minimum="0" Maximum="100" Value="{Binding Value}"/> Spiffy, and whilst we’re at it, why not bind the Maximum value as well – after all, we can’t be sure of the size of the progress, and it’s a pain to have to work out the percentage (when the progress bar can do it for us): <ProgressBar Minimum="0" Maximum="MaximumValue" Value="{Binding Value}"/> Right, this will work absolutely fine. Or will it??? On the face of it, it looks good, and testing it shows no issues, until at one point we go from: Maximum = 100; Value = 90; to Maximum=60; Value=50; On the face of it not unreasonable. The problem is more obvious if we look at the states of the properties after each set (initially Maximum is set at 1, Value = 0): Code Maximum Value Value < Maximum Maximum = 100; 100 0 True Value = 90; 100 90 True Maximum = 60; 60 90 False Value = 50; 60 50 True Everything is good until the Value is less than the Maximum, at this point the Progress Bar breaks. That’s right, it no longer updates itself, it will always look 100% full. The simple solution – always ensuring you set Value before Maximum is fine unless you’re using a ProgressBar in a less controlled environment – where for example you’re setting a ‘container’ with both values at the same time. The example I have is in a DataTemplate, I have a DataTemplate for a BusyIndicator, (specifically the BusyContentTemplate). The binding works this way: <BusyIndicator BusyContent="{Binding BusyContent}" BusyContentTemplate="{Binding ProgressTemplate}"/> With the template as the ProgressBar defined above… I was setting my BusyContent like this: BusyContent = content; aaaaaand finally, ‘content’ is a class: public class ContentClass : INotifyPropertyChanged { //Obviously this is properly implemented… public double Maximum { get;set;} public double Value { get;set;} } Soooo… As I was replacing the BusyContent wholesale, the order of the binding being set was outside of my control, so – how to go about it? Basically? Fudge it. Modify the ContentClass to include a method: public void Update(double value, double max) { Value = value; Maximum = max; } and change where the setting is to be: BusyContent.Update(content.Value, content.Maximum); Thereby getting the order correct.. • Workarounds for supporting MVVM in the Silverlight ContextMenu service

  As I discussed in my last post, some of the Silverlight controls does not support MVVM quite well out of the box without specific customizations. The Context Menu is another control that requires customizations for enabling data binding on the menu options. There are a few things that you might want to expose as view model for a menu item, such as the Text, the associated icon or the command that needs to be executed. That view model should look like this, public class MenuItemModel { public string Name { get; set; } public ICommand Command { get; set; } public Image Icon { get; set; } public object CommandParameter { get; set; } } This is how you can modify the built-in control to support data binding on the model above, public class CustomContextMenu : ContextMenu { protected override DependencyObject GetContainerForItemOverride() { CustomMenuItem item = new CustomMenuItem(); Binding commandBinding = new Binding("Command"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandProperty, commandBinding);   Binding commandParameter = new Binding("CommandParameter"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandParameterProperty, commandParameter);   return item; } }   public class CustomMenuItem : MenuItem { protected override DependencyObject GetContainerForItemOverride() { CustomMenuItem item = new CustomMenuItem();   Binding commandBinding = new Binding("Command"); item.SetBinding(CustomMenuItem.CommandProperty, commandBinding);   return item; } } The change is very similar to the one I made in the TreeView for manually data binding some of the Menu item properties to the model. • Silverlight nested RadGridView SelectedItem DataContext

  Hi, I'm developing a Silverlight 4 app and am using the 2010 Q1 release 1 RadGridView. I'm developing this app using the MVVM pattern and trying to keep my codebehind to a minimum. On my View I have a RadGridView and this binds to a property on my ViewModel. I am setting a property via the SelectedItem. I have a nested RadGridView and I want to set a property on my ViewModel to the SelectedItem but I cannot. I think the DataContext of my nested grid is the element in the parent's bound collection, rather than my ViewModel. I can easily use codebehind to set my ViewModel property from the SelectionChanged event on the nested grid, but I'd rather not do this. I have tried to use my viewModelName in the ElementName in my nested grid to specify that for SelectedItem, the ViewModel is the DataContext, but I cannot get this to work. Any ideas?   Any good soul have an example of implementing the "Command Pattern" introduced by Prism on "Double-click event" of Silverlight 4.0 DataGrid.   I have a datagrid in silverlight with child datagrid nested in it. Also I have a DataPager on the outer datagrid. My problem is it works fine except for the first row for the first time. When I click on it, it doesn't fire the dgData_RowDetailsVisibilityChanged event. Also, when I click on second row, firstly first row fires the event and then the second row fires it and shows the nested grid. Please help.

• .NET SerialPort DataReceived event not firing

  I have a WPF test app for evaluating event-based serial port communication (vs. polling the serial port). The problem is that the DataReceived event doesn't seem to be firing at all. I have a very basic WPF form with a TextBox for user input, a TextBlock for output, and a button to write the input to the serial port. Here's the code: public partial class Window1 : Window { SerialPort port; public Window1() { InitializeComponent(); port = new SerialPort("COM2", 9600, Parity.None, 8, StopBits.One); port.DataReceived += new SerialDataReceivedEventHandler(port_DataReceived); port.Open(); } void port_DataReceived(object sender, SerialDataReceivedEventArgs e) { Debug.Print("receiving!"); string data = port.ReadExisting(); Debug.Print(data); outputText.Text = data; } private void Button_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Debug.Print("sending: " + inputText.Text); port.WriteLine(inputText.Text); } } Now, here are the complicating factors: The laptop I'm working on has no serial ports, so I'm using a piece of software called Virtual Serial Port Emulator to setup a COM2. VSPE has worked admirably in the past, and it's not clear why it would only malfunction with .NET's SerialPort class, but I mention it just in case. When I hit the button on my form to send the data, my Hyperterminal window (connected on COM2) shows that the data is getting through. Yes, I disconnect Hyperterminal when I want to test my form's ability to read the port. I've tried opening the port before wiring up the event. No change. I've read through another post here where someone else is having a similar problem. None of that info has helped me in this case. EDIT #2: I realized that I had two separate apps that should both send and receive from the serial port, so I decided to try running them simultaneously... If I type into the console app, the WPF app DataReceived event fires, with the expected threading error (which I know how to deal with). If I type into the WPF app, the console app DataReceived event fires, and it echoes the data. I'm guessing the issue is somewhere in my use of the VSPE software, which is set up to treat one serial port as both input and output. And through some weirdness of the SerialPort class, one instance of a serial port can't be both the sender and receiver. Anyway, I think it's solved.

  I have a datagrid and I added silverlight 4 toolkit contextmenu to textbox in datagrid as follows. When users right click on the textbox, contextmenu is being displayed. When users click the menu item with Header "Test", "MenuItem_Click" is getting executed. Now I want to access the textbox from the MenuItem_Click and modify its properties like background etc. Is there anyway to find textbox element(which is contextmenu's parent) from MenuItem_Click event? I can make the command fire by setting my ViewModel as a Resource and then binding to it as a StaticResource, but I want to know why the element to element binding won't work in this scenario. I would prefer not to use the StaticResource binding because that requires the default constructor on the ViewModel and so I can't inject my data easily.

  Some Background I have noticed that setting the EditTemplate of a DataForm (from the Silverlight Toolkit) can cause the DataForm to not be garbage collected. Consequently, the parent control of the DataForm cannot be garbage collected either, causing a very significant memory leak. IOW coupling between the Sliverlight code and the input XML is limited to the XAML only, other source code is agnostic to the set of attributes on the item element. Edit: The use of XSD is suggested but ultimately it amounts the same thing. XSD-Generated class. Edit: An anonymous class doesn't work, Silverlight can't bind them. Edit: This needs to be two way, the user needs to be able to edit the values and these value end up in the XML. (Changed original TextBlock to TextBox in sample above).

• Windows Phone 7 ListBox uncustomizable?

No matter what I do, the background is black/gray, the selected items have a blue border, and there is padding between the items in the listbox (i'm using images).   I'm getting an odd problem when implementing a master / child view and custom dependency properties. Within my master view I'm binding the view model declaratively in the XAML as follows: DataContext="{Binding MainViewModelProperty, Source={StaticResource Locator}}" and my MainViewModel is exposing an observable collection which I'm binding to an ItemsControl as follows: <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Lists}" Height="490" Canvas.Top="10" Width="70"> <ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Canvas> <local:TaskListControl Canvas.Left="{Binding ListLeft}" Canvas.Top="{Binding ListTop}" Width="{Binding ListWidth}" Height="{Binding ListHeight}" ListDetails="{Binding}"/> </Canvas> </DataTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemTemplate> </ItemsControl> TaskListControl in turn declares and bind to it's ViewModel and I've also defined a dependency property for the ListDetails property. The ListDetails property is not being set and if I remove the declarative reference to it's viewmodel the dependency property's callback does get fired. Is there a conflict with declaratively binding to viewmodels and definig dependency properties?   I have an "AddressListBox" ListBox that contains "AddressDetails" UserControl items, as shown in the .xaml file extract below. The Addresses collection is defined as ObservableCollection< Address Addresses and Street, Number, PostCode, City are properties of the Address class. The binding fails, when I use the "{Binding property}" syntax shown below. The binding succeeds, when I use the "dummy" strings in the commented-out code.
