• Icon fonts vs images

  My manager tells me not to use icon fonts on our websites, as it is another http request plus the extra kBs to download. Also because I would have to use content before for the font (I can't change the html), he prefers background images so it works in IE7. Personally I love the little things, so nice and crisp and resizeable! I get it if we only use a couple of icons on a website but if I would use, say 5 icons on a site - what do you guys think? Is it worth using an icon font or is he right thinking that it is not? I am just a sucker for anything new and exciting, and this year it is the retina display.

• Numeric GUI bottleneck

  Hi all, I've made a GUI to set up and start a numerical integrator using PyQT4, Wing, QT, and Python 2.6.6, on my Mac. The thing is, when I run the integrator form the GUI, it takes very many times longer than when I crudely run the integrator from the command line. As an example, a 1000 year integration took 98 seconds on the command line and ~570 seconds from the GUI. In the GUI, the integration runs from a thread and then returns. It uses a a queue to communicate back to the GUI. Does anyone have any ideas as to where the bottleneck is? • PHP: Return string between two characters

  I am wanting to use "keywords" within a large string. These keywords start and end using *my_keyword* and are user defined. How, within a large string, can I search and find what is between the two * characters and return each instance? The reason it might change it, that parts of the keywords can be user defined, such as *page_date_Y* which might show the year in which the page was created. So, again, I just need to do a search and return what is between those * characters. Is this possible, or is there a better way of doing this if I don't know the "keyword" length or what i might be?

Searching for a valid word will suck, big time, in terms of efficiency if I go for a vector<string> ( O(n) ). Are there any good alternatives? Keep in mind, I'm enrolled in freshman year.   I'm trying to figure out dates in Java and am completely lost. Do I use Date? Use epoch time? Gregorian Calendar? Let's say I have a want to store a date, then later compare it to other dates. For example, I've stored a date "10/27/2013". Then, I want to later compare it to dates entered later to see if a later date is identical to "10/27/2013", or if just the day, year, or month matches? What's the best way to do this?

I am showing the count of orders on the y-axis and the day on the x-axis. In my database, there is table called "order" in which order data is placed: order date, user_id, order_price, etc. For example, if on 4 July, 10 orders are placed, on 5 july, 20 orders are placed, and so on.   I have the following expression which will be used as date validation in the HTML5 "pattern" attribute. ?:0[1-9]|1[0-9]|2[0-9])|(?:(?!02)(?:0[1-9]|1[0-2])-(?:30))|(?:(?:0[13578]|1[02])-31))-(?:(?:0[1-9]|1[0-2])-(?:19|20)[0-9]{2} I want it to allow only valid dates, using "-" as a separator. This means up to 29th in February if it's a leap year, and 30/31 for other months respectively. Currently, it only allows years starting with 2 (2012) and months up to 12 (December). But it limits the day to 29 regardless of which month. Can anybody help me fix it?

  I am a freshman in college which has been Java programming for over a year. I haven taken a couple of programming courses, both of which were with Java. And I have done web development for several years. So overall, I would't say that I am a complete beginner in programming. Recently, I have developed a strong interest in developing for Android. I read that Android development was with Java and I thought it would making development easier for me. But I was very wrong. Based on reviews from Amazon, I have begun reading "Professional Android Application Development by Meier but everything is going over my head. The Busy Coder's Guide to Android Development seems a bit more for my level but I still want everybody else's opinion. The Google stuff isn't very helpful to me at my level and neither are the tutorials on anddev and such. Any advice for a complete beginner on how to get started? Thanks.

  hi there. im working on my second year project and im nearly finished but ive got a problem. i have a table set up in oracle that holds user names, recipients, and messages. i wanted to make a contacts list for sendin messages that would take the user names and put them into a swing jlist but i cant figure out how. i thought maybe if i put the usernames into an array from the sql itd be easier but that didnt work. any ideas?

Now for managing user i thought Using membrship provider. and choose'd to develop a Custom membership provider. Now my problem is that My data base schema dosn't match the Standred membership schema and the functions provided to Override take different argument than i expect. Like membership uses username as a username to log in. But i haev to use User email ID as the user name, also its searching functions is based on using Username as way to serach but i want it to search by UserID. Same Goes for User insertion, deletion, Updation.. please help me .... Edit Its just an idea, Would it be feasible to forcefully pass my values in the arguments and then handle them in my code.

  Hi there. I have a project, where I have posts for example. The task is next: I must show to user his last posts visit. This is my solution: every time user visits new (for him) topic, I create a new record in table visits. Table visits has next structure: id, user_id, post_id, last_visit. Now my tables visits has ~14,000,000 records and its still growing every day.. May be my solution isnt optimal and exists another way how to store users visits? Its important to save every visit as standalone record, because I also have feature to select and use users visits. And I cant purge this table, because data could be needed later month, year. How I could optimize this situation?

The first part is only cron which will check the dates, but is there any way how to notify the user? I didn't found anything for this.   I know there's a lot of resource for this via google, but I just wanted to hear personally from people who have experienced this before. I've programmed in C for 3 years and C++ for a year and now I am moving to C#. I know this is not going to be a so hard transition but could you guys that had this same experience with me share resources on a good book, article, or blog to make my study experience more efficient.
